Maybe I ordered the wrong item (bitter melon beef) and the panfried juicy pork buns. The bittermelon beef made me sick but the panfried buns were juicy and fresh. Service is lacking like most Chinese restaurants. While it is not a priority, usually the food makes up for lacking in service. If i were to return, I would order their dumplings. My friend saw this on ad on TV and said all of us had to go. I told them, if they were so good why would they run ads? Okay, so I've been known to be wrong, and this is one of those times. The lunch special which runs until 4:30pm, YES you read that right, is the best deal. That's probably why they're running ads, because if not, the regular dishes are like $20 for veggies or soup LOL. One of the new restaurants in Millbrae This is my third time coming to this restaurant 1st time ordered to go And I had to wait for 30 mins which acceptable because they were really busy . So I waited 30 mins and when I came back I saw my orders are ready but no one willing to pack them and give me the order, so I need to remind the restaurant staffs 5 times and took another 25 mins for just packing and gave me the orders. (During the time I saw the staffs picked up a clean chopstick from the floor and put them back on the rack with the other clean chopsticks) so DIRTY. After a week I went here again for my 2nd time, I also ordered to go they weee quick but don't give me any utensils. Today I went to this place again for dine in, the staffs are rude, and did the same thing pick up the dirty chopsticks from the floor and put that back on the rack with the other clean chopsticks. Plus the staffs were not willing to take my order and after I finished and waited for 6 mins and still had no one came to me to give me the check??? I have to go to the register to pay for the bill myself. After 3 tries, my conclusion with this restaurant is "Rude, Dirty and ignore" the taste for the foods is 7/10 score The staffs is 2/10 Environment is 1/10 As you can see the picture, I ordered the special dine in set but tons of green/red bell peppers and onions also half of the bowl, the green onion pancake is not fully cooked, the milk tea has no taste. New resstaurant in Milbrae replaces Zen Restaurant. Looks like this is expansion of the kitchen with different types of dishes which serves not just hongkong style dishes. It was not busy when we arrived around 5 pm. We got seat right away. The menu is combination of hongkong style dishes and chinese dishes from sichuan l They also serve western food like fries. The menu is comprehensive and they also have set menu which can be for 2 to 4 people and seem more economical. We ordered eggplant with green beans, bbq pork and roast duck with rice combination, tan tan noodle, and seafood pan-fried noodle. We also ordered ice lemon tea. The order was ready pretty quickly. Overall the food was ok. I feel most are not authentic and some don't looks the picture on the menu like spicy chili oil wonton and seafood pan-fried noodle. The wonton is yummy but is not spicy and more like wonton with soy sauce. The seafood pan-fried noodle was ok. The tan tan noodle is ok but seem missing something as it it on the sweet side. The bbq and roast duck rice are good. The roast pork is tender. The duck is good. Overall. The best is the egg and green beans. Service could be better as it took couple reminders to have our tea served. Usually at Chinese restaurant the first thing they serve is the drink. Wont ton soup for my soul! One of the few options opened between 2:30-4:00pm if you're thinking about grabbing a late lunch/early dinner . Loved their customizable won ton soup, we got shrimp won tons skipped the noodles and added roast duck, so rich, so flavorful, so lovely! Great spot for Chinese food on a rainy night. We ordered the pan fried seafood noodle, salted fish fried rice, and honey walnut shrimp. Salted fish was fried rice was flavorful and you can really taste the wok hei. The pan fried noodles weren't as crispy as I'd like but they were generous with the seafood! Surprised there aren't any reviews here yet since The Kitchen BBQ Express was packed on Saturday night! We popped in and snagged the last available table. We ordered the salted egg fried rice, Peking duck, pan fried dumplings, and choy sum in broth. Everything was delicious. The salted egg fried rice was massive with good wok hey. The Peking duck took a while to come out but was similarly large in portion size with super crispy skin and tender duck. The pan fried dumplings were also very juicy and flavorful but a bit expensive for $12 for 4 pieces. And the choy sum in broth was great and came with some pork as well. I really miss the old business when they served a delicious $10 rice plate. Since the change in ownership, the food has lost its flavor while prices have increased by about 50%. The dishes feel repetitive--same meat served with rice, noodles, and soup--and everything tastes bland. We ordered the $129.- fixed menu which consist a list of selections like a basket of XLBs (6), 1/2 of a Peking Duck w/crepes, large bowl of hot & spicy fish soup, duck tofu soup, (each enough for 4+), Chinese broccoli, lettuce wrap w/minced meat & veggies. We added 2 more dishes on the side like seafood chow fun, gravy minced beef over rice. The fried rice is good. The two bbq plate is horrible. The duck smells and almost the whole 5 pieces only have skin but no meat. The bento box has lot of rice and very little meat- I also have pork belly as another choice of the meat - they charged $6 without telling me over the phone. We ordered more food than we otherwise would have specifically to meet the $100 threshold. We received the voucher, returned the next day, and ordered about $30 worth of food. When we tried to use the voucher, we were told that the owner says it is only valid if you also spend over $100 on the second visit. That condition is not stated anywhere on the voucher, and it fundamentally changes the meaning of the promotion. Had dinner last night and order six dishes, one was the spicy dumpling. All five dishes came in a timely manner, we inquired where was the spicy dumplings. The waiter went to check on our order, he did not come back and say it would be a few minutes. Had to inquire another two times and still no order at this time it was more than 30 minutes, inquired again and he said a few minutes. Probably another 15-20 minutes and then we received the dumplings. At this point the waiter should have take the charge off our bill but he did not. The service I say was definitely lacking, no one came to ask if we need anything or was everything ok. Since my last review in January of The Kitchen BBQ Express, my husband and I have had lunch at this restaurant about once a week. They have updated their menu to include some set meals. We have tried more items. A new favorite is garlic eggplant, and we have also tried wood ear salad (a cold salad with a tangy dressing), cucumber salad (cold and refreshing), and signature BBQ rice plate with roast duck (just the right amount for one person, with a few bites for the next day at home). Portions of entrée items are flavorful and large, and we always have enough leftovers for two for lunch at home the next day. At our next visit, we may try one of the noodle soups and chow fun dishes. We have yet to order just dim sum, but will another time. read more
