    Custard buns

Tbh, I came here for the Shin Chan dim sum lol. The shin chan custard bun is soo cute. It also tastes pretty good. I also really enjoyed the other set of dim sum I ordered. The lava bao buns were nice and creamy. You can never go wrong with har gow. The seafood dumplings were also pretty delicious. I'll definitely be back for more shin chan lol. Try it out if you like. :)

We normally go to Dim Sum King, but this place was recommended to us, so we decided to give it a try -- and it ended up being a pleasant surprise. The dining room is very spacious, and the ornate ceiling décor gives it a nicer vibe than you might expect. They also have a giant screen playing Chinese music videos, which adds a fun, lively touch without being too distracting. We came in for Saturday lunch and were seated right away (party of two). Service was quick and efficient. We ordered the usual basics -- siu mai and har gow -- and they were fine: pretty dense, nothing too standout. I actually ordered the wrong shrimp rice noodle roll by mistake, but it ended up being really good. The crispy shrimp fried noodle roll was the real standout -- super unique with that bright orange rice noodle wrapped around a crunchy layer and shrimp. Tons of flavor and definitely something we'd come back for. Parking, however, sucks. It's Millbrae, so it's always hit or miss, but this area is especially tight. Overall, a solid and affordable dim sum option on the Peninsula. We'd come back, especially for those noodle rolls.

First time here and pleasantly surprised! Dishes were flavorful and seemed fresh. Order the chowfun and chungfun options. Dimsum like har gow and siu mai are ok but would stick to other small dishes. Very Hong Kong style food served here. Bathrooms were clean too!

The restaurant was packed Friday at noon. This was my first visit here. The interior reminded me of Asia. Fancy chandeliers and numerous large tables with no sound dampening features. Most customers looked like they lived most of their life in Asia. I really expected to like the food. We had shui mai, shao loong bao, char shu bao, braised chicken feet, stuffed tofu skins, Chinese broccoli and chow mein. No dish stood out as a must have. Nothing was bad. Service was very typical of a Chinese restaurant. Here's your food-- no vinegar soy dipping sauce with green onions was offered for the shao loong bao. We should have parked on El Camino on the east side, before getting to the restaurant. Instead, we turned right and parked on the east side down Center Street.

Dropped in with 5 people for sunday night dinner. Not too crowded today and parking was easy. (They have a private lot). Sorry we didn't take pictures this time. Got too hungry. 1)Peking duck- deliciously crispy skin. Totally worth it. Came with fluffy buns, green onion, and housin sauce 2) dried scallop fried rice- was ok, but some green onions would have made it look less boring. It was a little bare- rice, dried scallop, egg white. 3) empress chicken- delicious and extra flavorful 4) seafood tofu claypot- definitely one of the more heavy/ flavorful dishes. It's not bad though! 5) sautee green beans with minced pork and olive leaves- mildly salty and pretty garlicky. It's alright. I think I expected a little more wok-hei 6) one of our friends visiting from far away asked if they had egg rolls. I didn't think they would since it's more of a dimsum lunch time, but they said ok and made an order for us! That's super nice. Complimentary red bean soup and sesame balls for dessert. Seating- large and spacious, tables aren't too close together. Other atmosphere info: you know this place is fire if there's an altar for Guan Yu with food tributes at the entrance of the restaurant

A year ago I would've given this place 4 stars but today it just missed the mark. The bolo bbq bun deserves 1 star because the bread stinks of fermentation and overdue dairy and management refused to acknowledge that the ingredients had gone bad and claimed no one else had complained about it. The siumai, chicken feet and even the overdone bean curd roll were decent. I do not recommend the beef rice noodle or the lobster noodles.

Finally got to try Yan Peninsula after Yum's Bistro closed in Fremont. We came on a Monday at lunch time and there was no waiting even though the restaurant was relatively full. We even managed to get a parking spot in their parking lot. The restaurant is spacious with a glamorous ceiling. Table spacing is decent and comfortable. We were served our tea promptly and food came out at a nice pace. We ordered an assortment of dim sum: baked BBQ pork buns, house special shrimp Siu Mai, Siu Mai with shrimp, tangerine flavored beef balls, beef rice rolls, deep fried taro puffs, Chinese sausage buns, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, and bean curd skin rolls. Everything tasted good and authentic. No complaint at all! Prices are fair and in line with other restaurants of the same caliber. This is a solid dim sum spot.

This place to my surprise has been really good. Lately my parents have been obsessed with this place. And we have been bringing friends and family here and they all agree. We have been here maybe 3-5 times within the last few weeks. There are probably little touches here and there where it could be more aesthetic but overall still a really pretty place for those traditional banquet weddings. Overall really good! Plan on coming back to try more. They make super cute little designed baos for little kids and hoping to bring nieces and nephews here. They have a small little parking lot as well.

Food 4.0 | Service 4.0 | Ambiance 5.0 YAN PENINSULA at 1180 El Camino in Millbrae was a welcome dim sum choice. You have to get over the horrendous parking situation - a minuscule parking lot with congested street parking b/c it's on the ECR and nestled between in a small residential neighborhood. The interior is nicely lit with sun and a cool, ethereal light fixture that centers the bright and welcoming dining room. The place was bustling at 12 noon and was pleasantly surprised to get situated in the middle of the room for our party of three! Woohoo! You place your order by marking what you'd like on the menu checklist and the waitstaff picks up your completed order. Then your orders starts filtering out to your table. I'm sure this is very efficient way to order but still miss the days of the dim sum carts. Lol. Ordered the usual: BAKED BBQ PORK BAO HAR GAO, streamed shrimp dumpling LO BOK GO, turnip cake STEAMED CHICKEN FEET PORK SPARERIBS BLACK BEAN SAUCE GLUTINOUS RICE W/CHICKEN STEAMED IN LOTUS LEAF CHEUNG GUEN (steamed rice rolls) - shrimp, beef & cilantro GAI LAN w/oyster sauce DAN TAT, egg custard in flaky pastry. Long story short. All the dim-sum we had was good to excellent. We were stuffed but did not go big. Saw several orders of a lobster noodle dish that looked magnificent. Next time!

A very spacious dim sum location in Millbrae. The ornate ceiling decor elevates the ambiance. I appreciate that the restrooms are easily accessible right by the entrance and are fairly clean. Service was generally quick on a Saturday lunch, there was no wait for two people. We ordered the basics, siu mai and har gaw, and both were just fine, very dense filling but nothing too memorable. The two items that were surprisingly good were the shrimp rice noodle roll and the crispy shrimp fried noodle roll. Shrimp rice noodle roll was very flavorful. The crispy shrimp fried noodle roll was very unique with a bright orange rice noodle wrapped around a fried coating wrapped around shrimp. There was so much flavor in these rolls! Wish they carried a larger variety of beer though. Street parking is a bit hit and miss. Overall, pretty good affordable dim sum on the peninsula. May try it again.

The service is nice but the place itself is a little dirty and food was mid. They charge for hot water and service charge for a group of 3 people. I felt like I got catfished by the pig bun it was supposed to be pig shaped but it just had a pig sticker kinda disappointed.

No carts here -- you check off your picks on the menu, and everything comes out fresh from the kitchen instead of doing laps under a heat lamp. Every dish arrived hot, crisp, and clearly made to order. The dim sum lineup nails it: silky har gow, juicy siu mai, flaky egg tarts, and impossibly light taro puffs. The cartoon custard buns are almost too cute to eat -- golden little faces that smile right before you bite in and the warm custard flows out. Fried items stayed crunchy without that heavy oil feel. And the best part? For the amount we ordered, it came out to about half the price of what we usually spend at Palette Tea House -- with equal (if not better) quality and freshness. If you live for weekend dim sum cravings, Yan Peninsula deserves a top spot in your rotation. Fresh, fun, and shockingly good value -- the kind of place that keeps you grinning like those custard buns.

We're staying at a hotel nearby and decided to drop in for dinner, big mistake. First off, the wait was over an hour. For an "old establishment" that's always packed, you'd expect the food to justify the time, but it just didn't. The prices here are sky-high for what you get. Most dishes are over $22, which is wild considering you can find the exact same quality in LA for about $12. The food itself was mediocre at best. We actually had to send the snow pea sprouts back because they were so tough and woody they were basically unchewable. When you're paying premium prices, you expect the kitchen to at least pick through the veggies. To top it off, parking is a total nightmare. Between the hour-long wait, the mid food, and the high bill, it's just not worth the hassle. There are definitely better ways to spend your time and money in Millbrae.

5 stars - Genuine Northern Chinese Gem in Milbrae…read more I've been searching for years for a spot that does real Northern Chinese food without watering it down for the American palate, and New China absolutely delivers. The owners clearly know their stuff--Shandong style cooking shines through. We started with the pan-fried pork & chive dumplings (煎饺) -- thick, chewy wrappers with perfectly seasoned filling and that ideal crispy bottom. Not the thin-skinned Cantonese style; these are hearty and satisfying, just like what you'd get in the north. Their zha jiang mian (炸酱面) is outstanding--the fermented soybean sauce is rich and deeply flavored, loaded with ground pork, cucumber matchsticks, and bean sprouts. The noodles have that perfect al dente bite. It's the real deal, not the sweet Americanized version. We also got the cumin lamb skewers (孜然羊肉串) -- tender, intensely spiced with cumin, chili flakes, and sesame, grilled over real flame so they have that smoky char. And the sour cabbage stir-fried with glass noodles (酸菜粉丝) was spot-on: tangy, comforting, and full of that signature Northern balance of sour and savory. Excellent appetizers Portions are generous, prices are very reasonable for the quality, and the place has that no-frills, family-run feel that makes you feel like you're eating at someone's home kitchen. Service was friendly and quick, even when busy. If you're tired of the same old General Tso's and orange chicken everywhere, do yourself a favor and come here for authentic Northern Chinese flavors. Coming here on a Saturday after making dinner reservations on a late Saturday afternoon, I saw a number of familiar faces immediately. Half of their staff are from the Monterey Blvd. Won Kok Restaurant. This was my 1st time dining here in likely close to thirty years when it was another restaurant. Back to our meal, we were seated at the far end corner of the restaurant, prime location for spacing and restroom access. In crafting our menu, my friend chose several staple dishes from their original location; besides those, my friend was gifted a Bay-caught halibut so I asked the restaurant for suggestions in cooking it. The chef suggested cooking it two-ways. I knew the captain from his two previous restaurants (20+ years) and he guided us. Here's what we ate (family style): 1. Steamed surf clams with garlic and vermicelli noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=lPyTuWkX4RoUtP-3fZ2UiA) - These were served in two halves on each plate (four plates for eight shells) for our party of eight. Tasty, flavorful, and fresh as their flagship location in San Francisco. 2. Soy sauce supreme seasoned prawns, 2.5 lbs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=wYtIFMiiYTuhOa_CmggLrQ) - I actually requested "West Lake" shrimp but was subbed out by this. This was good, just not what we wanted and expected and definitely pricier. 3. Salt and pepper halibut (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=9scLPxW30ktLJK72UIrSBw) - Half of our provided fish was cooked this style. It was done well as you'd expect from the most famous R&G chef to go through their kitchen. 4. Sauteed pea sprouts with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=GDqjVZCqWnGvZ68sbHjqCw) - Pretty standard version and the pea sprouts were cleaned and trimmed well without any inedible or chewy pieces. 5. Pan fried pork spare ribs with soy sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=x3xQew_Es07lW2dPJwB7BA) - This was the captain's recommendation and it was good but didn't stand out in any particular way. The ribs are cut into bite sized pieces and flash fried. 6. Simmered beef stew & turnip with pepper in broth (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CAg60fXr0CfXtrcPVm2kEQ) - One of the signature dishes from the chef's days on Kearny Street that he continued at his Monterey Blvd. location. The portions are certainly enough for our large party as a family style dish. The broth is definitely the star and, for me, the radish (daikon). 7. Steamed halibut with black bean sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=amzaLddp_H2vdSGzrKyYfQ) - The size of the fish made this tricky as, when the captain tried to remove the bones in serving, we learned that the fish was not fully cooked. He brought it back to the kitchen and they cooked this to a perfect cooking temperature. The flavors were nice and the black bean sauce didn't overpower the fish. 8. Golden fried rice with a touch of egg white (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CZdyzi720mOckNXxHulS4g) - Another restaurant recommended dish, we were amazed at how tasty this was, given the simplicity of its description. Apologies for not having a full serving photo as the captain offered and agreed to him apportioning it in bowls for each diner. 9. Crispy skin roast chicken with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=TspHX9eknS496I3zXwVwlQ) - This is their innovative twist on the Cantonese favorite jia zhi chicken with a strong garlic flavor. The carving of the decorative chicken head (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=DaywI5br-WQb9hh0a5sgng) was impressive. 10. Green bean tapioca soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=12ljEfFOj8tqwIaBXHvTVw) - Complimentary, a nice ending. 11. Red bean paste pastries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=MwjmcyVoyHVXnmPRWYuM8w) - Complimentary and okay. The theme here, given the restaurant size, is for banquet style meals and prices reflect it. By the time we left, the dining room and the staff were swamped. Highly recommend making reservations especially weekends. More likely to dine at their flagship but will come for special occasions or with South Bay friends.
