It's taking me getting used to all of these updated and hip looking Dim Sum restaurants now and it's very prevalent in the El Camino-Millbrae areas. With the last amazing dim sum place that closed down, these newer restaurants have been popping up in the area. But, Yan Peninsula was a good visit and the food quality is excellent. Tried their usuals like the Shrimp Ha Gow, Sui Mai, Beef Rice Noodle, Pan-fried Dumplings, and even their special Lobster over e-noodles. So good btw! Everything was good, and the tea refills were good. The customers here are a good mix. Saw a pair of 20 or early 30-somethings dining here, just with friends or colleagues, which was interesting. Normally we go to dim sum because family wants to go lol. So it's a comfy place for the younger crowd too, that's awesome! There's a parking lot here, but you may have to circle around for a spot. Came here almost at 7 pm on a Saturday night and didn't have to wait in line nor have a reservation, since I read that they don't really honor reservations so just walked in. Quickly led to a table and dropped off with menus and soon after with some tea. These are the items we ordered: 1) Walnut shrimp/Honey Walnut prawns $26.95 - 3.5/5 - typical, shrimps were crispy, but not evenly coated with enough sauce. Some pieces of walnuts seemed a little stale. Would still order again though. 2) Black pepper beef ribs $28.95 - 4/5 - Chinese version of galbi/Korean short ribs in sizzling platter- very flavorful with pepper sauce, but some meat pieces were a little tough. Would order again. 3) House special crispy pork belly $22.95 - 4/5 - Very crispy skin, but some pieces were SUPER fatty, as in, just skin and fat. Came with a like hoisin sauce which made it taste really good. Would order again. 4) Braised seafood with tofu in clay pot $24.95 - 3.5/5 - strong flavor of Shrimp paste and slight spice due to the dried chilies in the clay pot. Tofu was super tender. Came with scallops, squid pieces, and shrimps. Would order again. 5) Pan seared rice noodles with giant clams $28.95 - ran out... 6) fried pork ribs with house special sweet sauce $25.95 - 1/5 - my piece was dry and didn't taste good under the sweet sauce coating on it. My sister's piece was slightly raw. Would not order again. 7) Stir fried beef with mixed mushrooms $26.95 - 4.5/5 - Best dish. Very tender beef pieces with various mushrooms and green beans. The mushrooms weren't all super flavorful, but the green beans were packing flavor. Would order again. Because the Pan seared rice noodles with giant clams ran out, we then replaced the dish with Stir fried dry beef chow fun $20.95. - 3.5/5 - Typical noodle dish. Pretty flavorful. Would probably order again... Service: Typical Chinese restaurant service. 3.5/5. Servers ignored us until we waved them over to order. First dish was served 15 minutes after we ordered and they printed out a receipt with the items ordered. Mostly served dishes steadily, although they told us they ran out of the noodle dish after serving half of our dishes. We requested a menu to choose a replacement dish, but they never came back with a menu, until we called another server over to get another menu. When we only had one more dish to come out, a server tried to offer to replace our plates with new plates, but we declined. After we were done, they packed up our leftovers for us and offered us free red bean desserts, sesame balls and some type of almond cookie. The red bean wasn't as sweet as I've typically eaten. The sesame balls would be better to be brought back home and air fried to crisp them up. Cookies were pretty good. Would I come again? Probably, but not go out of my way to come... We stopped by Yan for dim sum before picking up my daughter at SFO, we selected Yan for its convenience to the airport and because I've never tried it before (we usually go to Dragon Beaux - very good, East Ocean in Emeryville, HL Peninsula, used to only go to Hong Kong Flower Lounge in Millbrae before it sadly closed). Our visit confirms that we have yet to find a place as good as Hong Kong Flower Lounge without having to pay for the super expensive Yank Sing dim sum in SF. We ordered a lot of items which were all okay (3/5): house special shrimp siu mai, steamed shanghai dumpling, pan seared scallion pancake, pan fried chives and shrimp dumpling, deep fried meat dumpling (2/5), grill chives and shrimp dumpling (2/5), Hong Kong style shrimp dumpling, BBQ pork rice noodle rolls (2/5), beef chow fun (very little beef, very little flavor overall) The only standout items that I would order again from Yan are: - Signature BBQ Pork Buns - 5*/5 these were truly outstanding, I'd just order a few of these and take them to go for an easy delicious lunch/snack - Steamed tofu skin rolls w/oyster sauce - 5*5, these were also outstanding, one of the best I've ever had - stir fried choy sum - 5/5, solid vegetable and large portion, not too oily The search for really good dim sum in the Bay Area continues...seems like it should be easier, doesn't it? read more

I was in the San Francisco area for a event and I was craving them some since I was in Chinatown area. I happen to find this place on Yelp and I decided to check it out and get to go. I only ordered a couple dishes and it ended up being almost 30 bucks. I got ha gow and shrimp rice rolls. I ended up waiting more than 30 minutes and almost an hour for food to go. At that point I was pretty upset since no one was answering me and I ordered ahead of time over the phone. Maybe it would have been a different experience if I was sitting down, but it looks like since I was ordering only to go no one remembered. And after when I ate the food didn't seem anything special. I probably wouldn't recommend coming here if you were looking for something quick, but I guess that's my fault for not doing research. read more

Came in again yesterday during usual dinner rush. No parking in the store's lot so had to cruise the nearby neighborhood for a clear spot. Once inside we got seated right away! Considering the parking, that was a pleasant surprise! There was some sort of party going on, but service was quick and attentive. Even gave us wet wipes without asking as they saw we ordered crab. Ambiance is nice, pretty bright and plenty loud. Dishes: Stir fried mixed chives dried shrimp and rose soy sauce chicken (half) out together. -Had the chives dish before and still love it. Great mix of textures and flavors and in general it's a dish that's a little different and shows some thought by the chef. -Chicken was nice. Little sweet and salty but mild. Chicken cooked well, still moist. Enjoyed it! Then other dishes came out 1 by 1. -Dried scallop and egg white fried rice- decent, light, but maybe a tad under flavored. Just ok. -Fried water spinach fermented bean curd- probably the worst dish of the bunch. Too watery, not much flavor, maybe a tad over cooked. Maybe backup chef did this dish? -Hong Kong style spicy crab- This was decent. Nicely presented, decent amount of crab, good flavor. I'm not a crab person, but ate quite a bit. There were a few spots in the lot left when we got there. Service: came on a Sunday at 10:45am. It wasn't that busy and we got a table for 4 right away. No greeting when we got there and took awhile to wave someone down to walk us to an available table. Took down our own order and waved down a waiter to ask the difference of 2 similar dishes -- he did not know and had to ask someone else. This happened twice when we asked him about the food -- you'd think the waiter would know this. Throughout the meal, had to wave people down for any type of service -- for water, for sauces, for the check, for boxes, etc. Not once did anyone ask how things were or if we wanted anything else. They were not even that busy, there were many empty tables so I am not sure why the service fell short. When leaving, the hostess/any of the staff did not say bye or thank you. Not one acknowledgement and just walked by us. AND 18% service charge is automatically added!! Food: 4/5. I'd say it was pretty good, didn't take too long and food came hot. Came here for dimsum on a Sunday at 10am and there was no wait for our party if 4. They don't do the push cart dimsum, so everything is ordered off the menu. Service was what you would expect - a little slow at times and you have to stalk them sometimes to get what you want, especially when it gets busy around 11/11:30ish. But ordering the dishes on the menu and the speed of arrival was just fine in my opinion. We ordered all the dimsum staples (shrimp dumplings, siu mai, changfen, egg tarts, spareribs, etc) and I honestly thought the food was pretty good. It is great also if you have small kids. My toddler decided he was going to cry for a couple minutes and no one really bat an eye at the noise lol. Definitely will be back! read more

Came here early at 10:30am on a Wednesday and there was no wait! The menu was quite extensive with dishes I've never seen before, and we ordered via a paper and pen checklist. It took a while for the food to come out, likely because it was relatively empty and everything was made-to-order. Unfortunately, the service wasn't the best, and we had to ask for water and sauces (soy sauce and hot sauce) ourselves and more than once. The desserts came out first, then the steamed items, and finally the fried items. There were more than three types of custard buns, which all tasted very similar but had a different outer coating. My favorite was the Baked Salted Egg Yolk Lava Buns. Compared to Creamy Custard Buns (with the cartoon man stamped on top), it was much more tasteful and the outer crust provided a nice crunchy texture. If I were to come back, I would order only one of the custard buns. We also ordered the dim sum staples like Siu Mai, Shrimp Dumplings, and Spareribs with Black Bean Sauce. All were delicious, especially the Spareribs which wasn't as oily/heavy as other dim sum restaurants I've been to. We went ahead and tried the Corn Shrimp Dumplings in Goldfish Shape too (because we thought they were cute), but were disappointed when they didn't have much flavor nor taste much like corn. I likely wouldn't order this again. For dessert, we went with the egg tarts which were by far my favorite thing we ordered. They were soft and creamy on the top and flaky on the bottom. I would recommend eating them as soon as they come out while they're hot! The prices here were on the more expensive side as well. The dim sum was pretty good, but there are definitely better places in the Santa Clara area. I've been to this dim sum house numerous times but cell reception always was an issue in getting a review done. So I'm finally able to do a review. First of all, regardless of their low staff issues, they still seemed to effortlessly take care of all their guests, I they're amazing. Very few dim sum places use carts and this place is no different, but the upside is you get real hot dim sum instead of running out if items you may want at the end of the cart run. I may seem over simplistic, but I really enjoy good chicken feet and dry tofu wrapped wood ear, this restaurant does a great job if these dim sums. Their duck feet and duck tongue in soy sauce was a big hit also. Since my friends did most of the ordering, I was most impressed with their choices since they're more sophisticated at ordering than I. I did forget to get a picture of the pigs ears but I can tell you it was darn wonderful. Parking is terrible but I guess that's an indication that this dims sum house is outstanding. read more

Had a pretty meh experience here. Came on a weekend and was told the table would be 10-15 minutes, when the wait ended up being half an hour. After placing our order, the steamed lotus wrapped sticky rice came and then it took 25 minutes for any other savory food items to come. Overall the food had some hits and misses. The steamed black bean spare ribs were tender but could use more blackbean flavor. The salted egg yolk buns were solid. But the steamed beef balls and siu mai didn't have much bounce. The hot mustard was pretty watery. Not sure if it was an off day because I had been in the past on a weekday maybe less than a year before this visit and had a really pleasant experience. Solid spot for dim sum! They have lots of classic dishes -- my favorites are the regular har gow, siu mai, preserved egg and pork congee, and crispy shrimp rice rolls. The salt & pepper crispy chicken wings were also really good! A big plus is they're open on major holidays and can accommodate large groups on short notice. I came with a party of 20 on New Year Day today and they seated us in about half hour in their private room upstairs. It was really nice to have our own space since and we could be more chaotic without disturbing other customers. The staff is pretty attentive and kept coming upstairs to check on us. The food came out promptly and tasted fresh. Things to note -- the parking lot is pretty tiny. I recommend driving over to the residential area to park at Landing Lane or San Anselmo Ave and walking over. I'll come back to make use of their private room. Apparently they also offer karaoke in the room -- sounds fun for a party outing! read more

tl;dr They do not honor reservations. Made a reservation for 10 for a weekday lunch. We arrived on time and they said they gave our table away, shrugged, and said it would be a 30min wait. I'm used to curt service at Chinese restaurants, but please don't allow reservations if there is no intention of honoring them. The inside is the standard Chinese banquet with large round tables. Needed some dim sum(get it) after that heart racing game yesterday. Really small parking lot and mostly built for "compact cars". You'll find cars parked in a random spots everywhere which was annoying and hazardous. My dad had a hard time getting out thanks to some dude that didn't even give us room for the passenger side to get in(we had the last spot). Of course this was on a busy Sunday when all us Chinese love dim sum. Nice big screen tv BUTTTTTTTT they were streaming the lions vs bucs game and it kept dying half the time LOL did they really not have the local channels?? Anyways, on to the food. I used to come here regularly for dim sum with my family. Their food is decent and the service is adequate. We like that it's low drama and there's usually not a long wait. There's a 18% gratuity fee for all but we don't care as we tip at least that much anyway. But something changed for me. They used to only charge the adults for tea as our grade school children are not drinking the tea. In the last year or so their policy has changed and they charge everyone for tea. I take issue with that as that is basically not a tea fee but rather charging per head that enters the restaurant. We ask about it and someone adamantly told us "That's what everyone else does as well!". To challenge that, we decided to try other local dim sum restaurants and found out that both The Kitchen and Won Kok are not charging kids who are clearly not drinking the teas an extra fee. It's only a few dollars but it's the principle for me and reflects the integrity of the business. read more

I don't even want to comment on the food because our dining experience today was terrible. We've been coming here once a while for years and used to love this place, but the service has become a complete mess. We arrived at 11:55 AM and waited for an hour. I understand that waiting during peak hours on weekends is common, but the issue was how we were treated. I tried to ask the lady with blue hair how long the wait would be as I noticed people who got their numbers after us were seated before us. She turned around and didn't give me response. SO RUDE! I noticed that the staff prioritized their friends or people they knew, ignoring the waitlist. I spoke with the owner after an hour of waiting. She told us to follow her, but then gave us a table meant for four--even though we clearly had five people. I was extremely disappointed and voiced my frustration. It made no sense at all. Only after seeing how upset I was did she give us a table that actually fit our group. When it was time to ask for the bill, it took more than 15 minutes, and we had to walk to the counter to pay because there was no one around to serve. I honestly don't understand how they can justify charging an 18% service fee without providing any real service to their customers. This was by far the worst experience I've had here in over 15 years of living in the Bay Area. I won't be coming back anytime soon since there are plenty of other great dim sum places nearby. read more

Came here with my parents in the afternoon on a Friday. This has been our go-to spot recently for yum cha. The food is usually pretty good! Today, however, the lobster noodles were really soggy and they were out of several dim sum options already, but this was probably because we came at a later time. I only gave 3 stars because when our receipt came, they did not remove an item that never made it to our table because they ran out of it. If we had not checked the receipt, we would have paid for something that we never received. Otherwise, we still enjoy going here because the food is solid and is priced fairly. read more

Solid dim sum place with good variety! Came on a Sunday around 10:30am and there was no wait. You order off a menu (no dim sum cart :( )and they bring the dishes to you. I was excited to see that they had the Tie Guan Yin (iron goddess) tea. All the dishes were good. The XO rice rolls were a tad spicier (I have weak tolerance, I know) than I would like but still delicious. Shu mai and cheurng fun tasted great - no complaints. The baked pork bun had a bit of a soggy bottom so I would skip it next time. They have a large screen that plays MV's in the background. Had a dim sum craving and saw this place on my way home so I decided to stop for a quick bite. The place is huge inside with bright lights and was clean! The staff seated me right away and asked if I had any questions before they served me tea and water. My order came out literally scalding hot which I appreciated. Had to let it cool down a bit so I wouldn't burn my mouth! Everyone was very nice and the owner came by as she was greeting everyone at their tables which is rare nowadays. Yan Peninsula took over the spot of the previous Zen Peninsula. The interior has been remodeled and the service is much better than the old Zen; however, the Dim Sum that we ordered was a bit on the BLAND side. Did we look like Seniors needing to watch our sodium intake?!? Went on a quiet Thursday and got one of the remaining parking spots in their free private lot. The restaurant was approximately half full and allows diners with dogs - saw and heard at least three dogs. Chinese music and drama videos were projected on the large screen at the far end of the restaurant. As for food, the execution - temperature on steamed and fried items, crispiness in fried foods, were on point except for the Chicken Feet in which the tendons on the feet needed to be cooked longer. The digits did not break down into small pieces, thus a failure for Chicken feet. We also had Siu Mai, Seafood and Corn Dumpling somewhat shaped like a fish, Salt & Pepper Tofu and Pumpkin, Assorted Sweet Buns, and Hom Sei Gouk aka Fried Meat Dumpling. All of the savory items were bland even for my Wife who is sensitive to salty items. The Teem Baus or Sweet Buns looked cute with different animal faces but the fillings were all heavy and lumpy. Came here for dim sum with some friends. This place is situated on El Camino and is blessed with ample parking around. Interior seems to be recently refreshed. We need to order dim sum at the table and desserts are floating around the room. After we were seated and waiting for our food, we were frequently checked with deserts... we wanted to wait after our meal and turned them away. Food portions were huge. We ordered a number of shrimp based dim sum dishes. Food was okay. Service was a bit lacking and we were constantly waiting for our tea refill and had to flag people down a few times. We had some good time chatting. But when we were ready for desert the desert people disappeared. So the timing of the desert event was a bit mysterious to me. Overall, okay food, average service. This is my first time coming here since they reopened: not sure if they still have the same owners but decor & setup was exactly the same as the last dim sum restaurant that was there. They do have a parking lot but it gets very crowded and tight so make sure to go down the street to the residential area for more parking! My family of 8 came here on a Sunday around 12 and waited an hour to get seated: very normal for a dim sum restaurant on the weekend! We ordered a variety of things: Regular dim sum items: chicken feet, shrimp dumplings, shrimp rice noodle roll, black bean spare ribs, crispy shrimp rice noodle rolls (this one had a weird sweet peanuty sauce 2/5), seafood shrimp dumplings - all (4/5 - good portion and fresh) Everything else: House Special Buns Combo (2/5 some were hard and just not good), Soy Sauce Chow Mein (3/5 alright), Salt & Pepper Fish (0/5 we couldn't finish this because the fish was bad like tasted super off), and Salt & Pepper Squid (1/5 a lot of fried stuff but not much squid).
