Chicken Feet & Pork Ribs / 凤爪排骨 (18+ Mins Waiting Time! )
Maurine S.

Came here with some friends for a late night dinner. The one thing I really liked was that you can order at the table and pay your own bill so the other party doesn't insist on paying for your food! We ordered the pork spare ribs and chicken feet in the clay pot. The portion was a decent amount to share but the rice was not crispy like a traditional clay pot dish. The place was a bit noisy but it has a fun vibe to hang out with friends. Don't go here if you want a quiet serious conversation.

cha siu and steamed egg bao zai fan

Rice Monster is a hidden gem located in Millbrae's Social Eatery food hall. They specialize in Cantonese-style claypot rice, also known as bao zai fan, in which the rice is cooked in a clay pot with a variety of toppings to produce a delicious dish completed with scorched rice. As part of Social Eatery, patrons can take a seat within the food hall, place their orders on the provided tablet, and a staff member will bring the food an beverages straight to your table. Claypot rice is a personal favorite of mine, so it's always a special treat when I'm able to find a new restaurant that offers it. Although Rice Monster does have many of the traditional claypot rice flavors/toppings, they also have some unique ones that are lesser seen, such as the cha siu and steamed egg one that I ordered this time around. The claypot rice does take about 20 minutes to prepare, so if you're looking to enjoy this for your meal then I definitely recommend ordering it first so your stomach doesn't have to wait too long to enjoy it. The cha siu and steamed egg clay pot rice was in a single word - delicious. The salty-slightly-sweet cha siu paired well with the mild flavors of the egg, and the salty soy sauce you pour over the rice. I will say the rice could have been a little more scorched to provide the accompanying crunch that you expect from this dish; however, if you're really craving claypot rice and are in the area, then Rice Monster will definitely help satisfy that craving for you. If you're ever in the Millbrae area and want a one-stop shop for all your dining and beverage needs, then Social Eatery is definitely the place to go and be sure to enjoy some delicious hand-pulled noodles from Rice Monster while you're at it!

Grilled Unagi / 蒲烧鳗鱼 ($18.99)

I've written reviews for Social Eatery and Grapeholic when they first opened, but never Rice Monster. I suddenly was in a mood to come back recently and I decided to get something from Rice Monster because I've been craving stone pot rice. It was not busy when I went during lunch hours on a weekday so there was plenty of parking. The customer service here is pretty bad and the staff member there was very confused whether my party was takeout or dine-in even though we sat down. So we never got water until we flagged the staff down and requested water. Otherwise there is little communication as you scan the QR code at the table and order. When Social Eatery first opened, I'm not gonna lie I was confused how the ordering process dining in worked because the kiosk is right in front of you as you enter and no one really guides you on how their systems works. When it comes to the food, I liked my Grilled Unagi rice that I ordered which costed $18.99. It definitely left me stuffed and I like that they provide sauce on the side so you can adjust it to how much flavor you'd like. A lot of Unagi can be too sweet, but it's not overly sweet in this restaurant. I love the crunchy bits of rice that you can get too. The crunchy texture goes so well with the soft and tender Unagi. The ambiance is comfortable and if you ignore the service experience, I do like the options Social Eatery provides and Rice Monster has served some good rice dishes since opening.

So we got the Lap Mei Clay, Pork Ribs Clay and American Pork Ginseng Soup.Decent place for Bao Zai. We dined in and the place was pretty busy. The rice had crunchiness at the bottom of pot. Not a-lot of meat in the Lap Mei but it was yum. The Pork ribs were soft. Surprisingly the soup was nice and wasn't salty. Overall it's not that much food for Two people, I recommend getting four items. I would come back to try the noodles. Ordering was easy off a tablet. Service was friendly. Parking lot in front

It is super cute inside kind of like a food court where there are variety of options. Super easy to order food through their iPad. The clay pot rice was super tasty and also had great noodles. They also had boba drinks and their fruit teas are delicious. Would definitely go back again.

I was in the area and was looking for something simple to have, that's when I found this place. The place seems like a combination of 3 restaurants! They have a boba shop, a noodle shop and a rice shop. I had a boba and rice from this place. The rice overall was pretty good, other than it was oily than I would wanted. However, they do have a lot of different options of meat. The boba in my option was very average. The resturant itself have pretty comfortable tables. The service was a little slow, but that's because they only had one server, Overall, this place was mid. Would come back for the rice once in a while, but that's about it.

Chicken Feet , Pork Rib clay pot rice $15.99 (+$1.99 Chinese sausage)

When I was younger, I was known as the "FAN TONG 飯桶" aka Rice Bucket, because I ate SO much rice and I HAD to eat rice for lunch and dinner in order to be full. Obviously, at my old age now, I had to cut out the carbs so it was a treat to be trying out Rice Monster (located inside Social Eatery). .:: FOOD ::. Chicken Feet and Pork Ribs $15.99 (+$1.99 Chinese Sausage add on): chicken feet, sauteed pork ribs, chinese sausage. Comes in a clay pot and a very known canto dish, 煲仔飯. The rice on the bottom crisps up as it sits on the pot . Very simple dish. Wish the pork ribs were more on the salty savory side, it had more sweetness to it, and I wish the chicken feet had more meat to it. .:: Service / Ambiance / Parking ::. Terrible Service. Pretty much self service on everything. You order on your phone through QR code. Wait was super long and unorganized. Located inside Social Eatery, but there's no waitlist, no way to put your name down. You literally just wait at the door in line (very narrow if I may add), until a table opens up. They need to at least let you write your name down. My friend wanted to ask if we could add something on our order and the waiter was so rudely annoyed. He did a big sigh, rolled his eyes and was like no your order is in you cannot add anything. It was SO hard to flag ANYONE down, we just went up and grabbed things ourselves: napkins, to go box, etc. All the waiters literally did was bring food out and thats it. The place has a cute little exterior outside, when I went it was during Halloween week, it was decked out in Halloween decors. The inside had logs / wooden vibes as table. There were ones in high chairs, ones with benches, ones with low tables/ chairs. Parking was scary. The parking lot is SO narrow and small. I feel like its asking for an accident to happen. I would recommend parking on the street, its much more space and safer.

Half and half brisket noodle. Briskets are not soft

Don't know why this place gets a 4 star rating, it's a 3 from me and no higher. It's actually an eatery that combines a noodle shop, a clay pot rice restaurant and a tea shop together. There are some booth and a couple long tables for communal eating when the booths run out. It can be loud. Although the menu has fun Chinese names for the dishes, the food was disappointing. The half tendon half brisket beef noodle soup has small portions and the briskets are not soft. The bbq pork clay pot rice with egg was the most disappointing. The portion is small compared to the traditional clay pots. The bbq pork cut was too small and not half fat half meat to bring out the flavor and texture. The egg was just dumped in to cook, not pan fried and hence no gooey yolk. The spare ribs and chicken clay pot rice is not with black soy bean sauce. The chicken is soft and the spareribs are not too bony, which is good. The portion is still small. They bring out water almost as soon as we were seated and you order via the tablet. So overall service was minimal. But when asked they do it quickly.

i love claypot rice and this place really hits the spot when i'm in town and craving it. you find a place to sit and place the order with the server. they used to have veggies in it but now they don't, please bring it back!

We came here for lunch. It was fully decorated with the Halloween theme. It was not that busy, and we were seated right away. The ordering is using QR code on the table. You also pay right away. You can keep the tap open or close it. They automatically charge 15% granularity fee. We ordered Lap mei, which is clay pot rice with preserved pork and chinese sausage. It takes about 15 to 18 min for the food since the rice is cooked based on order. The second order was beef stew and tendon Biang Biang noofle soup. Both are yummy. The beef and tendon are tender, and noodles are chewy. Sooup is delicious. The claypot is also yummy. One downside is that it is too oily. Service is good. My advice is to come early. When we leave, the restaurant is full and so many people are waiting outside. Parking is limited on the premise, but you can park on the street.

Lap Mei / 经典腊味 (18+ Mins Waiting Time! ) Lap Mei / 经典腊味 (18+ Mins Waiting Time! )

I've been to the "best" clay pot restaurant in Hong Kong (Hing Kee) which was quite frankly, very disappointing. The clay pot I got at Rice Monster was way, way better ... better rice, better pork, better flavor and texture. This is the level of food I expected from Hing Kee. That being said, the ordering experience on the iPad they give you is lousy and cheap. I would have preferred ordering on my phone, which is always a lousy experience too. Restaurant was clean and well lit, and very loud. It the ordering experience was better, I would have given 5 stars ...

Shiela D.

I ordered like 15 minutes ago and when Doordash delivered it it was dry as if reheated under a heat lamp. Egg is not fresh too. Will not order again sorry. I hope they do same quality with dine in customers and delivery customers.

Crispy rice!

Social Eatery seems to be what Millbrae sorely needed because it was poppin' on weekday... at 3 pm. All those work from home "perks". *cough cough* *wink wink* Social Eatery is like a mini Chinese food hall that houses Noodleosophy (handmade noodles), Rice Monster (bo zai fan), and Grapeholic (grape-focused drinks and boba). After taking my dog to therapy, I visited Social Eatery for Rice Monster that specializes in Bo Zai Fan, Chinese Claypot Rice. Also, tried Grapeholic (too sweet and artificial tasting for me). O R D E R I N G There's one kiosk to order for all three businesses; very inefficient and slow moving. I waited 5 minutes while one person was still scrolling through the screen so I left the line and placed an online order via toast instead. There's also a QR code but I don't think it works for their outdoor table? FYI, if you order via the kiosk, there's an auto 15% service charge. No service charge on toast but everything is packed as takeout but ofc still tipped the staff. You can also order takeout/delivery via DoorDash, UberEats, and Postmates. R I C E M O N S T E R M E N U Chinese Herbal Soups ($6.99) and Bo Zai Fan: Claypot Rice (7 kinds: $14.99-$20.99 each). You can customize your claypot rice by adding additional meat, egg, mushrooms, etc ($1.99 each). F O O D * 滑鸡排骨 Chicken & Pork Rib Claypot Rice ($15.99): https://bit.ly/3qZuXaD *** Add Chinese Sausage ($1.99) *** Add Poached Egg ($1.99) First...that crispy rice: https://bit.ly/3LEH4Dt! The bottom had an even surface layer of deliciously crispy, golden brown, caramelized rice. The toppings were fine - tender chicken (dark meat), pork spareribs, and shiitake mushrooms. I'm glad I added the chinese sausage for richness and flavor since there wasn't enough of the sweet soy provided. I would skip the poached egg for takeout/delivery...even when eating it on-site, the yolk had started to set from the closed container. The bok choy provided freshness but was overcooked and soggy. Serving is enough for two people to share. S E R V I C E Contactless ordering. A staff member will call your order # when it's ready but it was hard to hear (no mic) so I had to stand near the doorway. I didn't get any text notification that my order was ready. Quoted 15 minutes but it took about 20-25 minutes for the order. A M B I A N C E Modern and organic with table, booth, and communal seating. Thanks to Amy D. for the heads up that there's one dog-friendly table outside. Empty tables sat with dirty plates and bowls. The outdoor table had like six dirty bowls and utensils from previous customers. There was only one trash can inside but nowhere to put the dirty plates/utensils at. P A R K I N G Private lot. Overall, solid Bo Zai Fan without having to go to The Richmond or Chinatown in SF. For such a high volume mini food hall, not feeling their ordering system though (the owners should checkout Local Kitchens' process) so I hope they can improve on that.

Takeout chicken & mushroom clay/iron pot rice, with rice crust! (ate several bites before taking photo)

New China Restaurant - Stir fry beef noodles

New China Restaurant

5 stars - Genuine Northern Chinese Gem in Milbrae…read more I've been searching for years for a spot that does real Northern Chinese food without watering it down for the American palate, and New China absolutely delivers. The owners clearly know their stuff--Shandong style cooking shines through. We started with the pan-fried pork & chive dumplings (煎饺) -- thick, chewy wrappers with perfectly seasoned filling and that ideal crispy bottom. Not the thin-skinned Cantonese style; these are hearty and satisfying, just like what you'd get in the north. Their zha jiang mian (炸酱面) is outstanding--the fermented soybean sauce is rich and deeply flavored, loaded with ground pork, cucumber matchsticks, and bean sprouts. The noodles have that perfect al dente bite. It's the real deal, not the sweet Americanized version. We also got the cumin lamb skewers (孜然羊肉串) -- tender, intensely spiced with cumin, chili flakes, and sesame, grilled over real flame so they have that smoky char. And the sour cabbage stir-fried with glass noodles (酸菜粉丝) was spot-on: tangy, comforting, and full of that signature Northern balance of sour and savory. Excellent appetizers Portions are generous, prices are very reasonable for the quality, and the place has that no-frills, family-run feel that makes you feel like you're eating at someone's home kitchen. Service was friendly and quick, even when busy. If you're tired of the same old General Tso's and orange chicken everywhere, do yourself a favor and come here for authentic Northern Chinese flavors. This is now our go-to spot in Milbrae Highly recommend--will be back often!

Unlike your typical Chinese Restaurant, this place specializes in Northern China style cuisine, so some of the dining experience may feel reversed. For example, they have a mince noodle that is served cold, but a Tofu Skin that is served hot. The English description are a bit off and they have a variety of frozen buns and other food you can buy to-go (they don't serve the buns at the restaurant). For the less adventurous, their spicy tofu, Crispy Sweet and Sour Chicken (breaded and fried crispy) and a dry noodle are good starting point, and for vegetables, their stir fry green beans is good (but best served with some rice). Overall, this place is not bad, but wish their menu was more accurate in the description/content to meet customer's expectations.

Black Pepper beef Ribs- delish! tender pieces with grilled bell peppers and red onion made this dish pair really well with rice. Fried rice with Scallop & egg white- a little light on the seasoning but still a decent fired rice dish which with the beef ribs dish was a match made in heaven. Seafood clay pot- more tofu than seafood but still a tasty and well seasoned clay pot. Also ordered a couple of dim sum plates (Shrimp dumpling & beef Balls). Both were on par with other dim sum locales so nothing negative about their flavors. Overall service was fine; given it was the lunch hour but all the food came out relatively quickly and would definitely have a return visit.

The dim sum here was excellent and reminded me of home. Not only did everything taste good but it was served piping hot and came out quickly. The breakdown of our dishes is below: Walnut Shrimp - Hot and plump shrimp that has a bounce in your mouth covered with tangy mayo. We enjoyed the light fry. Dried Scallop Egg White Fried Rice - Fragrant but oily and plenty of flavor. BBQ Pork & Egg Cheong Fun - Soft sheets of rice noodle roll with a generous amount of ingredients. Hargow - Very good with big shrimp and a sesame oil flavor. Shumai - Soft thin skin withmore seafood than pork taste. Chiu Chow dumpling & Beancurd roll were ok but had fresh ingredients. Chicken Feet - I liked the overall flavor but it didn't seep all the way in. Parking is challenging but the taste is well worth a visit!

For those that like the Szechuan tingling feeling, the chicken in explosive chilis was also quite good. We had also given the string beans, green onion pancake, and pork and shrimp dumplings a shot and all of them hit the spot. I'm usually a huge fan of braised beef noodle soup so decided to get that here too. It wasn't the same as if I had gotten this dish at a Taiwanese restaurant; compared to the strong flavors of the other dishes, this one was pretty mild. So it's something I would skip next time I come, but every other dish was on point. Our waitress was also great at taking care of us, bring out our food quickly and helping us to clear the other plates. Even after we finished our meal and overstayed our welcome by continuing to chat, the staff didn't make us feel rushed to leave.

Coming here on a Saturday after making dinner reservations on a late Saturday afternoon, I saw a number of familiar faces immediately. Half of their staff are from the Monterey Blvd. Won Kok Restaurant. This was my 1st time dining here in likely close to thirty years when it was another restaurant. Back to our meal, we were seated at the far end corner of the restaurant, prime location for spacing and restroom access. In crafting our menu, my friend chose several staple dishes from their original location; besides those, my friend was gifted a Bay-caught halibut so I asked the restaurant for suggestions in cooking it. The chef suggested cooking it two-ways. I knew the captain from his two previous restaurants (20+ years) and he guided us. Here's what we ate (family style): 1. Steamed surf clams with garlic and vermicelli noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=lPyTuWkX4RoUtP-3fZ2UiA) - These were served in two halves on each plate (four plates for eight shells) for our party of eight. Tasty, flavorful, and fresh as their flagship location in San Francisco. 2. Soy sauce supreme seasoned prawns, 2.5 lbs (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=wYtIFMiiYTuhOa_CmggLrQ) - I actually requested "West Lake" shrimp but was subbed out by this. This was good, just not what we wanted and expected and definitely pricier. 3. Salt and pepper halibut (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=9scLPxW30ktLJK72UIrSBw) - Half of our provided fish was cooked this style. It was done well as you'd expect from the most famous R&G chef to go through their kitchen. 4. Sauteed pea sprouts with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=GDqjVZCqWnGvZ68sbHjqCw) - Pretty standard version and the pea sprouts were cleaned and trimmed well without any inedible or chewy pieces. 5. Pan fried pork spare ribs with soy sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=x3xQew_Es07lW2dPJwB7BA) - This was the captain's recommendation and it was good but didn't stand out in any particular way. The ribs are cut into bite sized pieces and flash fried. 6. Simmered beef stew & turnip with pepper in broth (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CAg60fXr0CfXtrcPVm2kEQ) - One of the signature dishes from the chef's days on Kearny Street that he continued at his Monterey Blvd. location. The portions are certainly enough for our large party as a family style dish. The broth is definitely the star and, for me, the radish (daikon). 7. Steamed halibut with black bean sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=amzaLddp_H2vdSGzrKyYfQ) - The size of the fish made this tricky as, when the captain tried to remove the bones in serving, we learned that the fish was not fully cooked. He brought it back to the kitchen and they cooked this to a perfect cooking temperature. The flavors were nice and the black bean sauce didn't overpower the fish. 8. Golden fried rice with a touch of egg white (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=CZdyzi720mOckNXxHulS4g) - Another restaurant recommended dish, we were amazed at how tasty this was, given the simplicity of its description. Apologies for not having a full serving photo as the captain offered and agreed to him apportioning it in bowls for each diner. 9. Crispy skin roast chicken with garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=TspHX9eknS496I3zXwVwlQ) - This is their innovative twist on the Cantonese favorite jia zhi chicken with a strong garlic flavor. The carving of the decorative chicken head (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=DaywI5br-WQb9hh0a5sgng) was impressive. 10. Green bean tapioca soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=12ljEfFOj8tqwIaBXHvTVw) - Complimentary, a nice ending. 11. Red bean paste pastries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=MwjmcyVoyHVXnmPRWYuM8w) - Complimentary and okay. The theme here, given the restaurant size, is for banquet style meals and prices reflect it. By the time we left, the dining room and the staff were swamped. Highly recommend making reservations especially weekends. More likely to dine at their flagship but will come for special occasions or with South Bay friends.
