This was our second time coming to Zen Noodle Bar. We ordered the pan fried buns, beef noodle soup, spicy wontons and katsu chicken with noodles. I highly recommend the fried buns because they were so good! Would definitely be back just for those. The katsu chicken was also surprisingly good because it was light and crispy.

This restaurant confuses me. It seems to be rather popular, and had a regular flow of customers while I was there. However, the food just wasn't to my liking. At all. The pork in the spicy wontons seemed mushy, flavorless, and undercooked. The sauce was thin and lacked any heat. The beef in the beef noodle soup was dry and the noodles were too doughy-tasting. The pan-fried pork buns looked great but the bun kind of fell apart in my mouth and lacked structure or flavor. The salty soybean milk was thin and disappointing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was dark and dingy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The only highlight was the service. The woman working the front of the house was very kind and responsive. I just wish the food had been better. Much better!

Still so good! Love this place. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Staff are super nice and it's a small place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We tried the bean curd glass noodle. We also enjoyed the Turnip cake a lot. The pork chop with rice cakes was soooo tender and amazing. Also make sure to try their pan fried dumplings. They are amazing! Lastly we also tried the cabbage with bean curd. This pairs well with rice and it has an array of veggies. It is slightly sweet. They have a lot of traditional Shanghainese dishes. I'm happy I got to eat here! Loved the quality of the food.

Came here for some dumplings! The dumplings Never fail to be tasty! The chili wonton had nice flavor and the noodles were meh. Thanks!

May is the month for highlighting Asian American and Pacific Islander owned businesses, and I would be remiss if I didn't talk about some of the delicious foods I had while out in the bay area. To say that your can turn any corner in the area and probably find some excellent Asian inspired restaurants or foods would not be an exaggeration, and this little place "Zen Noodle Bar" is a wonderful example of that. This was my last meal before headed to the airport to come home, and I just had to have some more buns before going back east to an area where this kind of cooking is just not as common. I found this place convenient to where I dropped off my rental care, and just walked over, wheeling my suitcase behind me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's in a small shopping center with it's own parking, and a convenient drive thru in the front for those picking up to go from any spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After looking at some Yelp photos, I decided to go with the A1 Pan Fried Pork buns, as well as the E9 Spicy mince meat over rice with pork cutlet. This was entirely too much food for one person, but with a red-eye flight ahead to the east coast, it was time to stock up for a long journey anyway. The spicy minced meat came out first, and wow, lots of flavor! I could have gone even spicier with it, but loved the plate I was given. The pork cutlet it came with was lightly panko fried, very tender, delicious. The Pan Fried Pork buns were big, delicious, and wow... I would eat these all the time if I lived here. They were wonderful. VERY hot on the inside, as each bun wraps up a portion of pork and soup broth. If you like, you can bite out a small hole and sit them on their side to let them vent and cool a bit. I could not finish all this food, but made more than a healthy dent. I wish I could have brought it home for leftovers, sadly not possible in my situation. The value was definitely there, especially given what I had gotten used to paying for things in the bay area. I recommend this for locals and travelers alike!

Wow!!! What a hidden gem!!! The best Pan fried buns I've ever had. Like straight out of Shanghai. The braised beef noodles were so flavorful and delicious!!! You must come here. Excellent fast service at great prices!!!

Divvy Shanghainese place tucked away a couple streets from downtown San Mateo. Stopped by for Sunday night dinner, and place was pretty quiet. They kept the door open as well, so it was it slightly chilly. Overall food was flavorful, good portion size, with some surprises.. Im a big fan of wonton soup, and both the wonton soup and mini wonton soup were pretty solid. Both use the same soup broth, with difference being the size of wonton, filling inside, and then how much skin is left. The fried string beans were surprisingly good. They were on the thinner side, perfectly cooked, with a slight dry crispiness on the outside -- probably best had dine in and not take out. The pork chop and ribs were very saucy and meat was pretty tender. One notable disappointment was the shen jian bao, which had a much thicker and fluffier skin than I expected. It tasted more like a fried baozi (steamed bun) than a fried dumpling. I was hoping for something with thinner skin and more soup. The filling inside was solid though, and overall it had good flavor. Def divvy place, not a date night. Staff is friendly and nice, and can speak Shanghainese. Parking available in the center so pretty easy to get in and out. Overall I enjoyed the food here, but think of it more of a quick lunch or to go place.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This plaza is very small but the amount of regular customers coming in was a good sign that it's a welcoming, community based restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I enjoyed eating the pan fried dumplings here! The dan dan noodles weren't quite like the ones I'm used to (it wasn't spicy at all), but the noodles were fun to eat! I would like more spicy sauce options in the future to eat with the dumplings if possible!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Little Shanghainese food tucked away in a plaza so it's quieter and with a parking lot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of seatings inside the restaurant with variety of food options.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We tried the pan fried dumplings, still not a big fan of them lol but these dumplings still contain soup. Beef noodle soup has a different spice and beef is tender. The noodles are too thin to my liking and does not taste like hand pulled noodles, more store bought. Tan tan noodles weren't very good. The service is fast here!

Update here is definitely needed. After all, my only experience previous was under the peak of the world changing situation so take and go was the only option. Meeting some friends from Hayward, I got here when they opened and we were their first customers, taking a wall table on the right. My friends are loyal and frequent customers here so I entrusted them to craft our meal. You are given a laminated menu sheet and an erasable marking pen to pick your items. The kind hostess and waitress took our order after giving us cups of cold water as requested. We ordered eleven items, including one add-on from me. Here are the highlights: 1. Xiao Lung Bao, apparently an off-menu item from reading my photo (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=TCmWnTUhgBOk4EFYejnONQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - Eight juicy thin-skinned dumplings served with a small dish of black vinegar. One of the better ones that I've had in a while. 2. Pan fried pork buns (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=DDmOtNEG7jKOC_4JGPZIpw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - Apparently one of their signature items, this was as delicious as they looked with juices preserved within the crusted casing. Almost a must order here. 3. Shanghai Style Ja Jang Noodle (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=RGkoGeLEAie4qhT37kwhQg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - This is certainly better than my takeout version from almost three years ago. The flavors meshed well from the cucumber julienne and pickled vegetables to the sweet and savory meat sauce. It makes a difference having fresh noodles versus having it cold or reheated. Recommend for dine-in or within the hour if taking out. 4. Fried pork cutlet (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=5RwN4YJrTCfntEEqcJCbmw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - This was surprisingly more interesting eating wise than it sounded. Topped with a light creamy sweet sauce, the pork was tender and did not taste greasy. My chopsticks uncontrollably picked up random pieces of this throughout the meal. We were a party of four with one teenager so you know we wouldn't finish the meal. We packed food for future meals throughout the week. In ordering a takeout order for a friend at the counter, I saw a dish packed to go at the expediting station (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=XRenU2hKlJQHrYCxDjefiw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) so I had to add this on for myself. I will cook some rice and this will likely become two dinners later in the week. Service wise, everything was smooth for the 1st half hour since we were the only guests. As people filtered in to dine-in and pick up takeout orders, the pace slowed but we were pretty much done by that time. Our gracious hostess and waitress refilled our cups with water and removed empty plates. I ordered some food for a friend to try (never tried their food) as well as my above order. They generously comped me another dish as a courtesy to my friends. When the room fills up, do be patient as there are only three people in the kitchen and one manning the front of the house. The dining was filled by the time we left a little after noon. Will be back and will remember to repeat our schedule in coming when they open.

My boyfriend and I came here Friday night for dinner. We were greeted immediately and were able to sit wherever we liked. We got the Chinese donut, shrimp noodles, chicken cutlet with noodles, (not pictured) shrimp and leek dumplings and pan fried pork buns. Our food came out fairly fast. Everything was delicious and hot! I got the shrimp noodle soup spicy and it was full of flavor. Chicken cutlet with noodles was delicious - chicken was nice and crispy noodles were the perfect touch. The pan fried pork buns were crispy yet doughy and also very juicy to the bite. I would definitely come back here especially on a rainy night!

Metal string in my food from their cleaning steel wool in the kitchen!

What is the difference between dan dan noodles and ja jang noodles?

Do they have any no onion no garlic vegetarian options?

Yes, they can make a few dishes without onion and garlic. But overall, not a great place for no onion no garlic vegetarian options.

I went on a Saturday at noon and there was just one couple dining; when I left, there were 4-5 more groups. The inside of the restaurant looked aesthetically pleasing. The bathroom was quite old but clean. One of the 2 dispensers was out of soap, which I had hoped they would check as part of the restaurant opening and closing procedures. Our waiter was very friendly throughout the meal and offered food suggestions for us to consider. Beef pancake roll - unique seasoning. I liked how they included shredded lettuce for that crunchy texture. It was wrapped in green onion pancake, so it was a bit oily and required some chewing. My dad didn't care for this. I initially thought this isn't bad but by the end of eating my half, I was ok not ordering this again. I think it's worth trying once. Beef stew noodle soup - beef was flavorful but I needed to chew it a bit, so if you have elderly loved ones with dentures, keep that in mind! Noodles were al dente. My mom didn't like how the portion is very small. Pork & crab meat XLB (Xiaolongbao, soup filled dumplings) - First thing I thought when the server placed the bamboo steamer down on the table was, 'wow, these are SO small'. But regardless, I could definitely taste the crab, and the broth was flavorful and plenty. If I were to dine here again, I would order this. Chicken & vegetable boiled wontons in chicken soup - The skin of the wontons was springy and unique. The broth had sesame oil but otherwise was pretty mild/bland. My mother liked the broth from the beef stew noodle soup more. Pan fried chive dumpling - contained egg, glass noodles, and a lot of garlic and chives. Very yummy and would get this again. Pork & shrimp potsticker - was juicy. The skin a little thick. They came with a tiny side of sweet, sour, spicy pickled veggies. I thought this dish was mediocre. High tail shrimp & pork steamed dumplings - The pork was dense, which wasn't necessarily bad. The dumpling was slightly juicy but wasn't broth-filled. My mom didn't care for this dish. Overall, I would rate this restaurant a 3.5/5 but will round it up. My mom thought the food was quite mid and admitted it as such to the waiter after we paid the bill. I'm honestly not sure if I would return, given all the wonderful other cuisines/choices here in the downtown area - perhaps if I'm craving chive dumplings or crab dumplings again.

Staff was friendly and checked on us occasionally to make sure all was well. We ordered: - Smoked chicken (5/5): Definitely the star of the night, this was a cold dish perfectly smoked and tender. A large portion that seemed like a whole chicken and a steal for only $23 - Green Beans (4.5/5): Another large portion, well charred with perfect texture. Served with ground pork and a hint of spice - Meatball Clay Pot (3.5/5): the server did say it was soupy but it was probably my mistake as I thought it would be more like the Shanghainese lion head braised meatballs. Instead it was a very simple clear broth with Napa cabbage, small meatballs and a few strands of vermicelli noodles. The broth flavor was extremely mild and the meatballs didn't have much flavor and were firmer than expected. Our Cantonese friend liked it as he felt it was homey and comforting but I felt it was too boring - House Special Fried Rice (4/5): another huge portion, a solid egg fried rice with very large shrimp and some beef. - Pan Fried Beef Buns (2/5): In Beijing these are often translated to Doornail Meat Buns due to their round shape. Extremely juicy, almost like a gravy inside, and generously filled but the beef tasted a bit gamey which may be due to the spices used, but were off putting to us.

Homemade Soy Milk - 1/5 I think ordering this at dinnertime when the soy milk has been cooking all day was a mistake. It looked fine, but it tasted burned. When I brought attention to it, the server said it was supposed to be that way, denying it was burned and awkwardly joking about it afterward. Unsweetened, so you need to add sugar yourself. Soft Tofu - 4/5 Soft tofu, wood ear, golden needles (daylily buds) in a thickened soup. Looks a bit like hot & sour soup in appearance and texture, but it's neither spicy nor sour. In a few spoonfuls, the soft tofu did taste burned to me, but I could overlook it mostly. Comforting to eat on a cold day. Chive Pie - 3/5 Impressively huge. However, because they are big, thin, and flimsy, you cannot easily eat this as a handheld. Not crispy or thick enough a pancake to hold the delicious eggs & chives filling. Cumin Lamb - 3/5 My friend seemed to enjoy the lamb, but she didn't eat any of the greens, telling me they were for seasoning purposes. I ate the greens, but this dish came out fast and wasn't warm or heated enough. Beijing Mu Shu Pork - 5/5 I enjoyed the taste and texture of this mix of pork, egg, wood ear, cucumber, and golden needles. We were forewarned that this dish doesn't come with pancakes, like typical mu shu entrees do. We received a complimentary shredded potato chilled appetizer (4/5) and warm sesame balls dessert (3/5). Sesame balls seemed overfried. Restaurant has its own dedicated parking lot, so servers are expecting you to enter from the door closest to that. We entered through the street main entrance, which caught them by surprise. Restaurant appears to be a converted house, so you can dine in various little rooms. Restaurant was cold inside. It seemed that one door would not necessarily stay shut. I also don't think the heat was turned up. I felt like all of us were wearing coats. I chose most of the dishes and let my friend order in Mandarin Chinese. The chef came out a couple times to check on us, but primarily interacted with her in Chinese.

There were various dishes on the menu with appetizers, different proteins, carbs, etc. We had already looked at the menu prior to coming so we were able to place our order fairly quickly. Thick stir fried noodles: The noodles were pretty good! They were a mix of bouncy and chewy with small slices of chicken and bok choy throughout the dish. It was quite oily though. Spicy wontons: I thought these were going to be soaked in a peanut sauce but it was definitely more of szechuan chili oil. Maybe I read the description wrong. The wontons were tiny but plentiful. These were just okay, the pork filling was bland. Pan fried dumpling buns: The buns weren't as crispy as they're supposed to be. They had a small amount of pork filling but good soup inside. Be careful biting into one because it was hot. Sweet and sour chicken: Our favorite dish out of everything! It was the perfect combo of sweet and sour. There was more than enough chicken and gave us leftovers for another meal. I enjoyed the extra textures of the bell peppers, onions and pineapple throughout the dish. Definitely recommend! Service was as usual for a Chinese spot. There's a small private room on the right side if you have a reservation for a larger party. They do have a sign up at the front for a $2.50 credit card fee due to rising inflation so heads up.

Recently I stopped to pick-up dinner with the plan to have leftovers. I called my order in and was quoted 40 minutes for my order to be ready. My order consisted of salted fish and chicken fried rice (this location has the best around SF and the peninsula), bitter melon beef, chicken chow mein, Thai style fried vermicelli (my favorite dish here), salt and pepper chicken wings. We also received a complimentary bbq pork fried rice. Everything was fantastic and we had plenty of leftovers for a few days.

Big won ton filled w pork and shrimp. Bok choy Broth not much flavor, in a separate container since this was a take-home order. Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. So I learned my lesson by not sticking to my usual order, and won't order wonton soup or curry beef stew again.

Needless to say, we were not disappointed with our meal. We ordered the Mongolian beef, stir fry string bean, fish filet with eggplant clay pot and the fried chicken dish. It was plenty for our table of 5.5 (child included). The service was quick and the food was "wok" hot. Each dish was flavorful. The prices were reasonable and definitely worth a try. Note: The parking lot is for the Camille Petite Restaurant next door and not for Royal Feast & I'm unclear if you can park in the lot.

Based on the glowing reviews from the hosts, I decided to visit the restaurant with my family. What I didn't realize was that the episode originally aired in 2020. Though each dish was served piping hot, there was a weird taste to it. The chili chicken was mostly fried dough, as other Yelp reviewers noted. Had I known the episode was outdated, I likely would have reconsidered dining there. The restaurant looked nothing like what was shown on the program. The interior was dark and uninviting, with chipped paint on the walls and an overall lack of cleanliness. Unfortunately, my family and I became sick after eating there.
