Found a great place for roast duck, steamed chicken and barbecue pork. I walked by this place a few times on my way to the barbershop. I had no idea if it was good or not. I had to tried any Chinese restaurants in Millbrae. Finally, after a fresh haircut I decided to give Laka a try. It was a good choice. I order half a roast duck and a pound of barbecue pork. Both were very good and just like in Chinatown in the City. So I now have a go-to place for some of my favorite Chinese dishes to take home. Stopped by Laka and had a solid meal overall. We ordered the 3 item BBQ rice plate with BBQ pork, roast pork, and roast duck, plus the signature beef rib noodle soup, fried cartilage, and chow mein. The BBQ plate was definitely the highlight. The roast duck had nice flavor and was juicy, the BBQ pork was tender with a slightly sweet glaze, and the roast pork had a good balance of meat and crispy skin. The portion was generous and satisfying. The signature beef rib noodle soup was comforting, with tender ribs and a rich broth that tasted like it had been simmered well. The chow mein was simple but tasty and paired well with everything else. The fried cartilage was crispy and fun to snack on, though a little on the salty side for me. First time here. Hidden gem. Place looks very busy, but it's really the lines at the takeout counter and BBQ meats window area. You can actually bypass that line and put your name on waitlist paper or wave down a server in back. The restaurant isn't fancy or new inside, but they sure had plenty of tables and chairs. Breakfast hour is usually very busy and much better during lunch hour. All meal sets looked pretty darn good and prices are considered cheap and affordable for the good food quality offered. Hong Kong style/Cantonese employees. We had the special meal set C $13.99 and meal set F $12.99. Both comes with a beverage, foods were huge in portions, and very good in flavors/ingredients too. Not disappointed here. My C meal came with my favorite chow mein noodles & club sandwich cut in half. I really liked the taste and looks of it. Delicious. I picked the hot cup soybean milk for my meal. Organic and nutritious! Meal F was the chicken and rice wrapped in leaf. The egg yolk and sausage inside it was a bonus/so good. Great spot for Cantonese food. We ordered their chow mein, spicy noodle soup, marinated tofu, and char siu. Everything was delicious, big in portion size, and came quickly. Service was also super friendly and prompt. The char siu in particular was very juicy and tender and not at all tough, overcooked, or dry. This place is okay. For $13 or so you can get a breakfast special. This might not be for me because I thought the breakfast was unsubstantial. I had a breakfast fan tuan which was tiny and some dumplings. This was maybe a 3.5/5 stars for me. Service was quick. I liked that it came with hot milk tea. Their roast pork take out for sale is only belly when I was there last time. It's not like at ranch 99 where they give you whatever part they are at with the pig. It was $16/lb vs $14.50+ at 99ranch. The rice entrees are a great deal though as it could be enough for 2. The other side has the noodle soups and appetizers. Reliable Cantonese roasted meats option here. We stayed in Millbrae for a few weeks and explored all the Chinese joints. Laka was one we returned to multiple times because their cha siu was delicious -- juicy and with just the right amount of fat. The chicken with ginger onion sauce (bak cheet gai) and roast duck (foh ngaap) also were pretty good. Decently priced, too. The inside is modern and clean. Take out is quick and hassle free. I also came back for the Hong Kong breakfasts and, while I was grateful they offered this, I wasn't impressed. The congee was watery and without "liu" (Cantonese for ingredients). For HK style congee, it should be a little thicker, richer, with bits of meat, egg, seafood based on the order. Would I return to Laka for the Cantonese roast meats? Probably. Not very many places in the Bay do it right these days. read more

The first thing that catches your eye when you walk into Laka is the authentic Chinese bbq up front, complete with a woman hacking away at poultry and hanging them up for display. Their prices are fairly reasonable here and the duck and bbq pork looked appealing. We decided to dine in during our last visit and didn't go with the bbq options; instead, we ordered spam musubi, fish fillet congee, signature beef rib noodle soup, and a beef combo noodle soup. All the food we received was fresh and delicious. I especially liked both of the soups - the noodles were soft, soaking up the flavors from the savory broth. There was a relatively good ratio of meat to starch. The signature beef rib soup comes spicy, but not overly so. The beef combo is not spicy, but you have additional chili oil at the table to customize the spice level to your liking. read more

Congee was soft and smooth enough to be on par, although the "boat congee" still doesn't have the right ingredients as in Canton. I have never eaten one with the right ingredients here in Bay Area to be honest. We were there around 11am and had to wait for a good 20 minutes. They have bbq meat in front which has a constant queue at it. The appetizers were quite overpriced - both the soy milk and sticky rice came as a surprised price. read more

Tucked away on a busy Broadway street, this place is our new go-to spot for roasted/bbq meats. It used to be the OG Cheung Hing but I think this place takes the crown. What we got: - 3-meat bbq plate: I believe the meats are preset. Cha Shu (bbq pork) came out fresh, moist, and had a great fat to meat ratio. Chicken was nice and juicy and not a single piece we had was dry (ginger/scallion sauce a bit on the salty side). Roast duck was also not overly greasy and full of flavor - Tofu Skin salad/Cucumber salad: Great palate cleansers. Good texture, good flavor - Rice rolls: The you tiao (chinese donut) wasn't crispy but the overall flavor was decent. Could pass on this next time Would like to try the roast pork next time, as that seemed to be super popular and constantly sold out. A few people from our office recently had lunch here. The insistence was from one person who I work with. Amongst soup choices, Chinese noodles are never at the top of my list. We only received decent service because someone in our group spoke Mandarin and Cantonese. This place is small and the servers are curt. Mala tang is very popular in Singapore, where you fill a large stainless steel bowl with raw ingredients that you select. Here you mark a menu. Their Chinese BBQ is the best in the area. I used to have to drive all the way to Ocean Avenue Ming Kee and stand in line for duck and soy sauce chicken to-go, but no longer! Laka offers fresh, juicy (and not too salty) meats that go so well with rice and porridge.
