There's two Backhaus' situated close to each other, but the Burlingame branch has more seating with an entire second floor and from my own experience, has never been a line in comparison to the San Mateo branch. There are outlets up against wall-seating, but no WiFi and I believe some days are "no laptop" days, so beware. Great breakfast options and delicate pastries. Went around 11/noon, most of the pastries had been sold out. The avocado toast was classic, toasted and seasoned perfectly. The breakfast sandwich was buttery on a brioche bun and a solid option. A sister spot to the Backhaus in San Mateo, that one only does takeout (and often has lines out the door early in the morning!), while this one is just as busy on the weekends but with ample seating upstairs. The only reason it's not five was because of the hiccup in service I experienced 2 times now. The first hiccup is why minuses one. I ordered a bunch of stuff and 2 breakfast sandwiches were among the items. I waited for them patiently, and I got called up that my order was ready. Headed up to counter, the girl gave me one sandwich I asked about the other and if I should keep my number. She proceeds to tell me that I only ordered one sandwich which I know I ordered two and paid for them and tells me that I need to be rung up and pay again. I said no, I paid for it already. I proceeded to look for my receipt. She kept telling me there was only one sandwich on the list. I was looking for my receipt still to prove to her that I bought two, when finally a gentleman came up and said there was two sandwiches on the ticket. I proceeded to wait longer for the second sandwich.... The thing is, I don't remember anyone apologizing for the confusion or the extra wait. I would have just appreciated the acknowledgment!! Other than that I must say the staff is usually friendly and the baked goods alone get 5+ stars!!! It's simple ingredients but done well. It's usually busy and parking can be tricky. Especially if a yoga class is going on in a nearby establishment. My family and I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line out the door. There are so many breakfast choices; pastries (sweet and savory), desserts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee options. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My husband and I shared it and really enjoyed it. The coffee was okay. Wait time: Backhaus is an extremely popular bakery with a long wait time to order. They typically take one order at a time which limits how fast service can be if you do not get there early. It gets pretty busy so they can run out of what you want and it can be challenging to find a table. Make sure to go upstairs! The location is prime, but difficult to find parking as it's on a heavy traffic street. The mini chocolate loaf was the perfect amount of sweetness. It's definitely worth a try, but maybe too sweet to buy a loaf to take home. I did buy a loaf of sourdough for home, though! I also ordered the iced cinnamon coffee which is not on their regular menu. It's on a small list of special drinks posted by the cashier. The raspberry pistachio croissant was prettier than it tasted. I was surprised that there was actual raspberry jam and pistachio inside because no one posted a picture of the inside! LOL! The breakfast sandwich was good, but worth the almost $20 price tag? Naaaa. It wasn't even a full meal, just the sandwich. Do bakeries not toast pastries anymore, is that not a thing? We got scared away by the huge line at the San Mateo location, and arrived here to find a line almost as long. Backhaus is SO popular on Saturdays! Luckily, the weather was perfect and the line moved pretty quickly. The interior had a clean look - minimal decor, lots of natural light. We ordered at the counter and I chose the Lemontado, Labne Egg, and Pistachio Raspberry Croissant. I was handed the croissant right away and went upstairs to the seating area to wait for the rest. Service wasn't the fastest, but still quicker than I expected considering they were slammed. The Lemontado was very interesting, but the combination of citrus and coffee worked here. I didn't see their other seasonal drinks until after I'd ordered, so I wish these were more visibly displayed. The Labne Egg was fantastic! The soft poached egg and labne yogurt went so well with the sourdough toast. But the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant truly rocked my world. The texture of the pastry was perfectly flakey, the raspberry was so jammy, and the pistachio flavor was strong. I can't recommend this enough! It's always nice to visit Backhaus for some yummy pastries and coffee! Parking in the area is mostly meter or you can find some free 2 hour parking along California Drive if you're lucky! Backhaus has so many variety of pastries for you to try. I also love that they have a self operating elevator if you have a stroller or wheelchair for you to enjoy upstairs where it is a little less busy. I usually come here on a weekday and most of the pastries are still available but the popular ones sell out usually closer to noon so come early! Raspberry Pistachio: So good! When we visited it was easy enough to wait a bit and find parking in the lot next door. There are street parking as well. There was a short line out the door, which is to be expected. Service is efficient but still friendly, they take time to explain things should you have questions. They offer cooked breakfast and lunch as well, but as we were there for the bread we ordered a variety, with coffee, and took our tray upstairs, where there is a spacious and inviting dining area. Comfortable and tranquil, it's much better than sitting downstairs where the constant stream of customers makes it noisy and chaotic. The bread - oh the kouign amann is so, so, so good. It's like croissant dough but with some sugar added to the folds, so it has little caramelized bites in it. Yum!!! I ordered the pistachio croissant but was a bit surprised that inside of a filling I got a croissant sliced open with a layer of pistachio spread in between. Nonetheless, delicious. But my absolute favorite is the chocolate sourdough bread. Fluffy soft and with so much chocolate that after I torn it open I got melted chocolate all over my fingers. I've honestly never been to the bakery myself (my bestie picks them up for me) but these pastries are to die for. They are perfectly balanced and have the right amount of sweet/tartness. I loved the passionfruit pastry they currently have and the savory potato focaccia. Their scones are perfectly dense and moist at the same time. Love their country loaf, olive fougasse, and baguettes. Breakfast sandwich with housemade sausage and egg is tops. Definitely try their Marble Rye Sourdough loaf if they have it! Rye is subtle and reinforces natural sourdough flavor; more of a "rye" sourdough then a sourdough "rye bread" if that makes sense. Hope they keep it as a regular everyday (or at least weekly) item. She also rang me up incorrectly at first but points for trying - everything bagel with scallion cream cheese - bagel was toasted but not sliced, and the garlic on it was burnt enough to affect the taste, but the bagel texture itself was lovely. My first time trying the pastries was at a friend's house. I normally do not like scones because they're always dry or rock hard. But the ones at Backhaus. Stopped here on my way to San Jose. This is my old neighborhood and wanted to see what's new and decided to get me a hot drink. This place has a ton of paid parking up front and the back. The line was long at 11am but it did go fast. I rate it at 3.5 stars because 1. At 11am they already don't have the choices I'd like to try. 2. No clear instructions on picking up your order. We sat on the second floor and they gave an opening to where you're supposed to hear them call your name the place is very loud so we had to go back down to pick up our hot drinks. I had never noticed this bakery before but today, stopped in. The breads behind the counter looked amazing but I didn't buy any; I didn't need any bread. The pastries also looked delicious and I spotted one called Kouign Amann, a typical buttery pastry from Brittany, France. I've eaten many Kouign Amann cakes and mini KAs while in France so I decided to buy one to try even though it didn't look quite like the ones I've had in France. I paid $6 for one. It felt a little hard in the paper bag. I just ate it after heating it up. It was okay but far from a real KA. I actually had to smatter some salted butter on it to meet my palate's discerning taste ;). There was too much sticky caramel on it. The ambiance is minimalistic and bright. My favorite items to order would be the avocado toast, country sourdough bread or epi bread. - The avocado toast with an added egg is consistent. I recommend asking for no salt as the brunch items here tend to be over salted. (I've had the Backhaus breakfast sandwich or mushroom sandwich which each had great components but the overall taste was saltiness.) - The sourdough or epi bread here is great with just butter or baked and serves with eggs! - Backhaus often have a changing special sweet treats/desserts in their refrigerated section so check that out! This location is larger than the San Mateo one with seating inside. For pastries I got the almond croissant, pear & chocolate scone and egg & speck croissant. You can expect a line out the door on a Sunday afternoon especially after a class is out at Basecamp next door. The staff does their best to manage the line quickly and you can find seats both upstairs and downstairs. There is only one line for both coffee and pastries, no separate line for any matter hence why the line is long. It did give us a time to figure out what we wanted. I've seen people rave about their mushroom sandwich, but unfortunately that was sold out when we got there so we opted for their regular breakfast sandwich instead which was still good and flavorful. Overall, I like the vibes of this location. It's spacious enough to have a conversation with your group without feeling claustrophobic. The staff also brings you your drinks and sandwiches to your table so you won't need to stand around waiting. Got here after a morning run to sample their brunch menu. Ordered the salmon bagel and labneh plate. Both were well-made, nicely seasoned. Their signature crusty bread stood out in both dishes. But portions were on the SMALLISH side especially for the price point. For instance, I would have preferred a complimentary side salad with the bagel to make it a more complete meal. Maybe two eggs with labneh instead of one. The service was attentive but they forgot to cut our bagel in half, though we had asked them given we were sharing. I did like that the tip is included. We recently discovered they have a new location of Backhaus - Burlingame on California who opened last November 2023. Paid metered street parking and a small lot next to the building. This location offers brunch, in addition to their usual baked breads and pastries. They have a 2nd floor that offers ample seating for their patrons. Large bay windows to let in the natural lighting. Two non-gender restrooms. The decor was simple yet you could see their kitchen area where they prepare, baked, & cook. The service was so nice and friendly. She recommended some of her favorites. We scooped up the last 3 remaining Raspberry Pistachio Croissants and a seasonal Coffeecake with Apple. Come early as they will run out of thing because they are so popular.
