    Almond croissant
    James H.

I wasn't really a fan of the almond croissant. The paste was a little too strong for me and a litttle too much almond taste. The hazelnut chocolate croissant had a lot of dark chocolate pieces that made it a bit strong. I'll be back to try the popular chocolate loafs.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambience: clean, cute, modern coffee shop with a lot of upstairs seating in addition to their downstairs. Great for a little meet up or a nice morning stop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service: always friendly from my experience Coffee: i've only gotten their cappuccino, but it was decent. has sufficient milk for me as someone who usually gets a latte Food: chocolate croissant was mediocre, it did my pet peeve wear. The chocolate was not really aligned well so you don't get chocolate in the majority of the bites, only a few. However, all the other pastries we got were delicious, including the speck and egg croissant bowl, passionfruit meringue, pastry, morning, bun, almond croissant, in that order.

A tried and true bakery to go to and for keepers on my list! A perfect morning is coming here on a nice sunny day, grabbing a yummy iced latte paired perfectly with a yummy pastry on the side. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Yummy pastries, delicious food, great coffee, bright and spacious ambiance, and kind staff. You can't go wrong![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Food, Pastries, Coffee, Service, and Ambiance are all definitely a 10/10 rating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What I ordered: Avocado Toast Almond Croissant Iced Vanilla Latte with Oatmilk FOOD/PASTRIES: 10/10 One of the best Avocado Toast I've truly had from a bakery. A nice thick perfectly toasted yet moist slice of bread, with fresh smear of Avocado that is lightly citrusy, crumbled pieces of Feta cheeseC and perfect ratio of greens to top it off. I honestly could have another slice. The croissant was buttery, flaky, yet moist at the same time. Perfect ratio of almond filling, dusted perfectly with powder sugar. The Iced Vanilla Latte was great. I was skeptical because sometimes bakeries don't execute latte's as well, but Backhaus does! They added enough sweetener but not too much to where I don't taste the espresso shot. SERVICE: 10/10 Friendly staff, efficient system they got going on to get the line going, and quick service despite the line. AMBIANCE: 10/10 [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love how simple, bright and clean the ambiance is. I love that there is a downstairs and upstairs, as well as outdoor seating. I love when a good cafe also has a lot of spacious seating to choose from.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Does anyone go to Backhaus as often as we do? It just seems like whenever there's a celebration. It's the first place we think of to get amazing food wonderful service and the word the food wrapped beautifully to go. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience is always great inside there's always a line and it's totally worth it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place is just the best. I hope they open one in Walnut Creek.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]There's two Backhaus' situated close to each other, but the Burlingame branch has more seating with an entire second floor and from my own experience, has never been a line in comparison to the San Mateo branch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are outlets up against wall-seating, but no WiFi and I believe some days are "no laptop" days, so beware.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great breakfast options and delicate pastries. Went around 11/noon, most of the pastries had been sold out. The avocado toast was classic, toasted and seasoned perfectly. The breakfast sandwich was buttery on a brioche bun and a solid option. Their drinks were alright, nothing entirely special. Great place to stop by especially in the area for some shopping!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Cute cafe off of Burlingame Ave![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]A sister spot to the Backhaus in San Mateo, that one only does takeout (and often has lines out the door early in the morning!), while this one is just as busy on the weekends but with ample seating upstairs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their coffees and pastries/bread/sandwiches are all solid. You order at the counter and the food comes out fairly quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great spot for a quick bite or friends catch-up![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The only reason it's not five was because of the hiccup in service I experienced 2 times now. The first hiccup is why minuses one. I ordered a bunch of stuff and 2 breakfast sandwiches were among the items. I waited for them patiently, and I got called up that my order was ready. Headed up to counter, the girl gave me one sandwich I asked about the other and if I should keep my number. She proceeds to tell me that I only ordered one sandwich which I know I ordered two and paid for them and tells me that I need to be rung up and pay again. I said no, I paid for it already. I proceeded to look for my receipt. She kept telling me there was only one sandwich on the list. I was looking for my receipt still to prove to her that I bought two, when finally a gentleman came up and said there was two sandwiches on the ticket. I proceeded to wait longer for the second sandwich.... The thing is, I don't remember anyone apologizing for the confusion or the extra wait. I would have just appreciated the acknowledgment!! Other than that I must say the staff is usually friendly and the baked goods alone get 5+ stars!!! The breakfast sandwich and the roasted mushroom sandwich are probably two of the best things I've eaten in a long time!!! they are perfection and the perfect breakfast, snack or lunch!!! Hands down the breakfast sandwich is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten and it checks all the boxes. Soft fluffy warm bread, but good enough to hold everything together, perfect yolky egg, generous amount and tasty, warm, breakfast sausage patty, and some arugula and frisee lettuce. I taste a little acidic element, but didn't look at the whole sandwich description. All I know is it's just a great sandwich !!!! We also liked the baguette sandwich a lot. It's simple ingredients but done well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's usually busy and parking can be tricky. Especially if a yoga class is going on in a nearby establishment. It's because twice I've seen people coming out of somewhere with yoga mats and then the parking lot clears.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's seating downstairs and upstairs. I've only been downstairs, but it seems nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I've been going to the San Mateo location awhile, but I drive the extra 7 minutes now to come to this location for the sandwiches. Hoping San Mateo eventually can expand and do the other menu items.

Good place for brunch in Burlingame. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Spacious upstairs for dine in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Pastries and bread seem to sell out earlier in the day; we arrived around 12:30pm Sunday and had limited options. This was fine for us because we mainly came for brunch. Everyone enjoyed their food. We tried the salmon pragel, labne egg, and broccoli rabe grilled cheese. Drinks were okay, I wouldn't really go here for them. We didn't mind our espresso tonic and san mateo fogs. Friendly staff!

My family and I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line out the door. There are so many breakfast choices; pastries (sweet and savory), desserts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee options. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My husband and I shared it and really enjoyed it. The coffee was okay. I wouldn't come here just for coffee but adding the sandwiches is tempting enough to come back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat upstairs and while it was a nice open space, it was really warm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'd recommend sitting outside or downstairs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Does a burger have a fried egg trendy now?! It is nice! I like it! We just see this kind of burger more frequently The burger was good, not big portion. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Indoor seating area in 2nd floor was great, especially good view on the window tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was OK. Picking beverages and table clean were self service - fair enough. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was clean and neat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was good distance between tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would recommend this restaurant for break and work alone, and enjoy their tasty food.

Cute place with fresh and homemade bread/pastries. Would I wait in line for it again? Probably not. The service is fast and friendly. It gets pretty busy so they can run out of what you want and it can be challenging to find a table. Make sure to go upstairs! The location is prime, but difficult to find parking as it's on a heavy traffic street. The mini chocolate loaf was the perfect amount of sweetness. It's definitely worth a try, but maybe too sweet to buy a loaf to take home. I did buy a loaf of sourdough for home, though! I also ordered the iced cinnamon coffee which is not on their regular menu. It's on a small list of special drinks posted by the cashier. The raspberry pistachio croissant was prettier than it tasted. I was surprised that there was actual raspberry jam and pistachio inside because no one posted a picture of the inside! LOL! The breakfast sandwich was good, but worth the almost $20 price tag? Naaaa. It wasn't even a full meal, just the sandwich. Do bakeries not toast pastries anymore, is that not a thing? I always love a warm pastry and I wish the pastries were warmed up a bit before handed over. Also, the coffee and sandwich came at significantly different times so I couldn't enjoy them together. It's so busy that it didn't feel relaxing, esp when you have people crowding around trying to get your table. There are probably more places you can go for better coffee and warm pastries while not feeling crowded.

I've honestly never been to the bakery myself (my bestie picks them up for me) but these pastries are to die for. They are perfectly balanced and have the right amount of sweet/tartness. I loved the passionfruit pastry they currently have and the savory potato focaccia. Their scones are perfectly dense and moist at the same time. The raspberry pistachio croissant had just the right amount of filling, not too much raspberry. I also had a tomato danish from them last year that I can't stop thinking about. Will definitely be back for more!

Labne Egg, Pistachio Raspberry Croissant, Breakfast Sandwich, & Lemontado
    Allie G.

We got scared away by the huge line at the San Mateo location, and arrived here to find a line almost as long. Backhaus is SO popular on Saturdays! Luckily, the weather was perfect and the line moved pretty quickly. The interior had a clean look - minimal decor, lots of natural light. We ordered at the counter and I chose the Lemontado, Labne Egg, and Pistachio Raspberry Croissant. I was handed the croissant right away and went upstairs to the seating area to wait for the rest. Service wasn't the fastest, but still quicker than I expected considering they were slammed. The Lemontado was very interesting, but the combination of citrus and coffee worked here. I didn't see their other seasonal drinks until after I'd ordered, so I wish these were more visibly displayed. The Labne Egg was fantastic! The soft poached egg and labne yogurt went so well with the sourdough toast. But the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant truly rocked my world. The texture of the pastry was perfectly flakey, the raspberry was so jammy, and the pistachio flavor was strong. I can't recommend this enough! My friend also loved his Breakfast Sandwich and Morning Bun. Overall, worth the wait - will be returning!

The San Mateo location runs out of items so early in the day. Is this location the same? If I come around 10-11am on a weekend will there still be a decent selection of items?

I went to San Mateo on a Saturday morning about 0930 and there was some. Went to Burlingame after around 1045 and the selection MUCH thinner, but still about 10 pastry Items to choose from. Still a good stock of fresh breads.

Maison Alyzée is a French fine pastry bakery café located on downtown Burlingame's main strip. Dedicated to providing customers with a Parisian escape through handcrafted elegant pastries and artisanal breads, the bake shoppe doubles as pâtisserie and boulangerie, priding itself on meticulous attention to detail. Upon entry, we were welcomed by a brightly lit and very clean venue. Ray and I were immediately drawn to the beautiful marble-topped white counter that encased a gorgeous variety of exquisite treats. The commitment to the elegance of French culture and modern creativity were evident in every luxurious pastry and cake on display. Maison Alyzée is an order-at-the-counter establishment, so we made our purchase with a friendly staff member at the register. Unfortunately, we were told that espresso drinks were no longer available that night since the staff had already begun cleaning the machines. Ok....I never understand businesses that start shutting down things before closing time. This just shows customers that team convenience of closing shop quickly takes precedence over customer experience, essentially omitting availability of items from the menu while they are still open. For this reason, I am docking a star. Luckily, they still had some cold brew available, so I ordered a Lavender Cold Brew with oat milk. Heads-up: Plant-based milks like almond and oat milk incur a $0.75 surcharge. I wish that the lavender was more like a simple syrup, so that the flavour was sweeter and less sharp. Maison Alyzée also offers a selection of breakfast, lunch, and brunch options. I definitely need to return to try one or two or a few of their ostentatious delights.

I visited Maison Alyzee in Burlingame on a Saturday morning, and while the pastries were good, the service felt cold and dismissive. There was no rush, yet the staff was not warm or welcoming. The response was "It's in the oven" was delivered rudely, as though my simple question was an inconvenience. Even when a café is busy, basic courtesy and communication should not be optional. Good food deserves to be matched by good hospitality.
