I recently had some pastries and bread from Backhaus delivered to me via 4 hour express air mail. Also known as my wife flying some back for me on a recent business trip to Burlingame. I can't really say anything about the atmosphere or service since I didn't physically visit this store. What I can say, though, is that Backhaus serves some stellar baked goods from everything I was able to try. Kouign Amann ($6) - This pastry has a nice tighter brioche-like crumb, clearly constructed without trying to be a croissant like so many other bakeries. There's an excellent thin sugar glaze melted on the bottom. It almost shatters like glass and is not too sweet. Sugar soaks into a pocket on the interior, creating a sweet, soft, almost pudding-like texture. (5/5) Almond Croissant ($7.75) - Really open lamination, airy and chewy. Cut in half and slathered with a dark brown colored almond frangipane. It's by far the darkest rendition I've seen and seems to have higher moisture content than most, so it soaks into the croissant, creating a soggy texture. It's also not strongly almond in flavor for some reason. The sliced almond on top powers the pastry far more than the filling. The croissant is good but definitely not my favorite. (4/5) Croissant Loaf ($22) - At first I thought this croissant loaf was really expensive, but I think it's well worth the price. Firstly, it's quite long. I didn't measure it, but I'd guess it's baked in one of the larger pullman loaf pans, probably at least 16 inches. The interior, while not having as large honeycomb air pockets as a normal croissant, still flake apart easily into layers. The loaf is compressed a bit from being baked in the pan, rather than having the freedom to openly rise. It's deliciously buttery inside, while the exterior is a dark golden brown that flakes apart. Unfortunately they bag the loaf up, so the exterior flakiness softens due to the moisture trapped in the plastic. It's still an excellent croissant loaf and it works wonderfully in sandwiches, as French Toast, and eaten just by itself. (5/5) I wish Backhaus had been open back when I lived in the Bay. I will definitely visit in person next time I fly down. read more

Wow what a find! We arrived and the line was out the door 15 min after they opened (a good sign). All of their pastries looked so good, we asked the woman working which were top sellers and she recommended any croissant or scone. We chose the blueberry oatmeal scone, which was delicious, tasted almost like a cookie. Also got the raspberry coffee cake which was not my favorite as the raspberry was pretty strong and overshadowed the coffee cake. Finally got the breakfast sandwich which was my favorite item. To drink we all got cardamom lattes, hot. For some reason the drinks came out extremely hot, like I couldn't even pick up my mug without burning my fingers. After it cooled down for 10 minutes, it was really good but perhaps the baristas need to adjust their milk frothing temperature? The space is really cool, they have an upstairs section and if you sit by the window you get a nice view of the outside. They do not have outlets, so it's not designed to sit at all day and study. read more

I love carbs and I love how Backhaus creates their carbs. It's rare to find a bakery that excels in both their bread and their pastries!! The pistachio raspberry croissant was amazing! It's twice baked so the flaky croissant layers desiccate and crisp a bit to remind me of baklava phyllo dough, but with buttery goodness. It perfectly sandwiches flavorful, sweet raspberry jam and chunky pistachio butter. There's a small amount of seeds from the raspberry to give a nice texture, but not enough to be distracting. Very aesthetically pleasing with freeze-dried raspberry dust sprinkled on top and pistachio frangipane. The avocado toast is on this wonderfully crusty sourdough that is a joy to munch on, forming a solid foundation to this dish. The avocado is fresh and buttery, with a generous amount of feta punctuating this dish. Finely diced shallots add a layer of mild allium flavor. Microgreens add visual interest. Yum! read more

This is by far my favorite bakery so far. Their pastries are unique, eye catching and delicious. The smell of fresh baking ingredients is in the air and many people doing different roles. I ordered their pistachio raspberry croissant which is my favorite. It has a nice outer crunch texture with a jammy and inside. The texture of crunchy pistachios is amazing too. The speck and the egg pastry is also unique with a boiled egg and bacon inside with tiny mustard seeds on top for a tart bite. It's delicious and makes a pretty hardy pastry. I also enjoyed their coffee from ritual which is a plus because not a lot of cafes or bakeries carry ritual around the area. This place is a gem! I also recommend eating upstairs where you can see pastry chefs in the bottom, cooking and cleaning. It's awesome watching their craft and witnessing a great team work. Very nice space! There's two floors so lots of tables. It's a "computer free space" though in case anyone is looking for a place to work. I got the s'mores chocolate bread and the ham and cheese croissant. I usually like sweet more than savory but the ham and cheese was sooo good! read more

I have to stop reviewing this place because I basically go every weekend! It's just they have new things for me to try so then I wanna say how much I love them! I think this place is ruining me because the food is so good and the service so on top that no other restaurant seems to match them. The newest things we had were the chocolate chip milk bread, which was so good. The pastrami sandwich with the potato chips in it was incredible. Their chocolate chip cookie made me wanna cry. It tasted so delicious. We had a new little savory bread pudding, chive onion--I don't know what it was, but it was like a little muffin and it was really tasty. The ambience and the restaurant is always good but we usually get it to go and they wrap it so nicely for takeout. We got coffee and it was also nice. I honestly could have another slice. The croissant was buttery, flaky, yet moist at the same time. Perfect ratio of almond filling, dusted perfectly with powder sugar. The Iced Vanilla Latte was great. I was skeptical because sometimes bakeries don't execute latte's as well, but Backhaus does! They added enough sweetener but not too much to where I don't taste the espresso shot. Dropped in around 11:00 AM on a Friday and had a great experience overall. The space itself is really bright and roomy, featuring two floors of seating with tons of natural light, plus some outdoor tables if you prefer to sit outside. The staff here was super friendly, efficient, and helpful from start to finish. For our to-go haul, we managed to snag one of our absolute favorites, the Everything Croissant Bowl, which always hits the spot. We also grabbed a couple of new items to try later, including the Sauerkraut Pretzel and the Passionfruit Danish cuz I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. We opted to eat a couple of things there. The breakfast sandwich was super indulgent and enjoyable, featuring a perfectly runny egg. To drink, the Fig Leaf Latte was really nice with a subtle, distinct coco-nutty flavor profile, slightly sweetened and well balanced . There's two Backhaus' situated close to each other, but the Burlingame branch has more seating with an entire second floor and from my own experience, has never been a line in comparison to the San Mateo branch. There are outlets up against wall-seating, but no WiFi and I believe some days are "no laptop" days, so beware. Great breakfast options and delicate pastries. Went around 11/noon, most of the pastries had been sold out. The avocado toast was classic, toasted and seasoned perfectly. The breakfast sandwich was buttery on a brioche bun and a solid option. Their drinks were alright, nothing entirely special. Great place to stop by especially in the area for some shopping! read more

The only reason it's not five was because of the hiccup in service I experienced 2 times now. The first hiccup is why minuses one. I ordered a bunch of stuff and 2 breakfast sandwiches were among the items. I waited for them patiently, and I got called up that my order was ready. Headed up to counter, the girl gave me one sandwich I asked about the other and if I should keep my number. She proceeds to tell me that I only ordered one sandwich which I know I ordered two and paid for them and tells me that I need to be rung up and pay again. I said no, I paid for it already. I proceeded to look for my receipt. She kept telling me there was only one sandwich on the list. I was looking for my receipt still to prove to her that I bought two, when finally a gentleman came up and said there was two sandwiches on the ticket. I proceeded to wait longer for the second sandwich.... The thing is, I don't remember anyone apologizing for the confusion or the extra wait. I would have just appreciated the acknowledgment!! Other than that I must say the staff is usually friendly and the baked goods alone get 5+ stars!!! The breakfast sandwich and the roasted mushroom sandwich are probably two of the best things I've eaten in a long time!!! they are perfection and the perfect breakfast, snack or lunch!!! Hands down the breakfast sandwich is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten and it checks all the boxes. Soft fluffy warm bread, but good enough to hold everything together, perfect yolky egg, generous amount and tasty, warm, breakfast sausage patty, and some arugula and frisee lettuce. I taste a little acidic element, but didn't look at the whole sandwich description. All I know is it's just a great sandwich !!!! We also liked the baguette sandwich a lot. It's simple ingredients but done well. It's usually busy and parking can be tricky. Especially if a yoga class is going on in a nearby establishment. It's because twice I've seen people coming out of somewhere with yoga mats and then the parking lot clears. There's seating downstairs and upstairs. I've only been downstairs, but it seems nice. I've been going to the San Mateo location awhile, but I drive the extra 7 minutes now to come to this location for the sandwiches. Good place for brunch in Burlingame. Spacious upstairs for dine in. Pastries and bread seem to sell out earlier in the day; we arrived around 12:30pm Sunday and had limited options. This was fine for us because we mainly came for brunch. Everyone enjoyed their food. We tried the salmon pragel, labne egg, and broccoli rabe grilled cheese. It's a 2-storey place with inside and outside seating in a busy location. Parking is street-parking and not too easy to find. As you enter, you're treated to a galore of pastries with nice aroma. You place your order up front, look for a table and food is brought to you. The place is crowded but service was quick and friendly. We had the roasted mushroom sandwich, chocolate croissant and others. Everything was good. The crust of the pastries were particularly good. It gets pretty busy so they can run out of what you want and it can be challenging to find a table. Make sure to go upstairs! The location is prime, but difficult to find parking as it's on a heavy traffic street. The mini chocolate loaf was the perfect amount of sweetness. It's definitely worth a try, but maybe too sweet to buy a loaf to take home. I did buy a loaf of sourdough for home, though! I also ordered the iced cinnamon coffee which is not on their regular menu. It's on a small list of special drinks posted by the cashier. The raspberry pistachio croissant was prettier than it tasted. I was surprised that there was actual raspberry jam and pistachio inside because no one posted a picture of the inside! LOL! The breakfast sandwich was good, but worth the almost $20 price tag? Naaaa. It wasn't even a full meal, just the sandwich. Do bakeries not toast pastries anymore, is that not a thing? I always love a warm pastry and I wish the pastries were warmed up a bit before handed over. Also, the coffee and sandwich came at significantly different times so I couldn't enjoy them together. My family and I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line out the door. There are so many breakfast choices; pastries (sweet and savory), desserts, breakfast sandwiches and coffee options. The breakfast sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My husband and I shared it and really enjoyed it. The coffee was okay. I wouldn't come here just for coffee but adding the sandwiches is tempting enough to come back. We sat upstairs and while it was a nice open space, it was really warm. We got scared away by the huge line at the San Mateo location, and arrived here to find a line almost as long. Backhaus is SO popular on Saturdays! Luckily, the weather was perfect and the line moved pretty quickly. The interior had a clean look - minimal decor, lots of natural light. We ordered at the counter and I chose the Lemontado, Labne Egg, and Pistachio Raspberry Croissant. I was handed the croissant right away and went upstairs to the seating area to wait for the rest. Service wasn't the fastest, but still quicker than I expected considering they were slammed. The Lemontado was very interesting, but the combination of citrus and coffee worked here. I didn't see their other seasonal drinks until after I'd ordered, so I wish these were more visibly displayed. The Labne Egg was fantastic! The soft poached egg and labne yogurt went so well with the sourdough toast. But the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant truly rocked my world. The texture of the pastry was perfectly flakey, the raspberry was so jammy, and the pistachio flavor was strong. I can't recommend this enough! Saw this place on a video raving about their plain croissants so had to try it out. Was a little worried because on a Sunday morning at 10:45am, the line was way out the door, but the line moved a lot faster than we expected! Within 10 min, we ordered our food and we're already seated. We tried an array of pastries: -plain croissant: 10/10 one of the best croissants we've had in the bay. it's so flaky on the outside and the inside is fluffy without being too buttery -passionfruit Kouign-amann: wish the bottom was less caramalized (it was a thick layer), but the pastry itself was nice and crispy and went so well with the passionfruit cream -speck and egg breakfast bowl: nice and flaky, but wish the egg were more runny There are a few tables downstairs, but just go upstairs are it is SO spacious. Plenty of seating upstairs even on a weekend which is a nice surprise! Great place to hang out and catch up with friends. Wait time: Backhaus is an extremely popular bakery with a long wait time to order. They typically take one order at a time which limits how fast service can be if you do not get there early. Service: Staff is extremely kind and informative of products as some were not labeled. Food / Drink: Super delicious sourdough, croissants are well laminated and flavorful. The dough is soft and well seasoned without being overly buttery. Mocha tasted pretty standard in terms of coffee without being overly bitter or sweet. I've honestly never been to the bakery myself (my bestie picks them up for me) but these pastries are to die for. They are perfectly balanced and have the right amount of sweet/tartness. I loved the passionfruit pastry they currently have and the savory potato focaccia. Their scones are perfectly dense and moist at the same time. The raspberry pistachio croissant had just the right amount of filling, not too much raspberry. I also had a tomato danish from them last year that I can't stop thinking about. It's always nice to visit Backhaus for some yummy pastries and coffee! Parking in the area is mostly meter or you can find some free 2 hour parking along California Drive if you're lucky! Backhaus has so many variety of pastries for you to try. I also love that they have a self operating elevator if you have a stroller or wheelchair for you to enjoy upstairs where it is a little less busy. I usually come here on a weekday and most of the pastries are still available but the popular ones sell out usually closer to noon so come early! Raspberry Pistachio: So good! When we visited it was easy enough to wait a bit and find parking in the lot next door. There are street parking as well. There was a short line out the door, which is to be expected. Service is efficient but still friendly, they take time to explain things should you have questions. They offer cooked breakfast and lunch as well, but as we were there for the bread we ordered a variety, with coffee, and took our tray upstairs, where there is a spacious and inviting dining area. Comfortable and tranquil, it's much better than sitting downstairs where the constant stream of customers makes it noisy and chaotic. The bread - oh the kouign amann is so, so, so good. It's like croissant dough but with some sugar added to the folds, so it has little caramelized bites in it. Yum!!! I ordered the pistachio croissant but was a bit surprised that inside of a filling I got a croissant sliced open with a layer of pistachio spread in between. Nonetheless, delicious. But my absolute favorite is the chocolate sourdough bread. Fluffy soft and with so much chocolate that after I torn it open I got melted chocolate all over my fingers. The flavor is so crazy good it's something that haunts my dream. This bakery is definitely at the top of its game. Yes it's not cheap, but IMO justified. read more

Are they perfect? NO who is? And who cares? When people make reviews they meticulously explain their reasons... food quality, waiting times, service, cleanliness, atmosphere etc. let me just say this: Backhaus for me feels like a warm happy calm down enjoy your meal place in a perfectly imperfect place. It almost feels like stopping by your friends house to eat something and chill for a little. And, I dont think many places can offer that. You feel local and taken care of. My hot coffee today was not that hot... I didn't care for a new one but I just let the server know the same way I would have wanted to know if I was the one preparing it. I didn't need a new one.... I know I know... it's not the cheapest but I couldn't care less because the coffee was just my excuse to go back there and sit to chill and enjoy the view.
