Ube Mochi Danish & Durian Pull Apart Bread
    Rose T.

Located in downtown San Mateo, this Asian bakery features the typical baked goods as well as fusion pastries and cakes. Grab a tray and tongs, pick from the drawers, and line up to pay. Ask a staff member to purchase cakes. My order: Ube Mochi Danish ($4.65): +This reminded me more of a pineapple bun vs a danish, with its crunchy top & soft bread. +Ube was smooth and mochi was chewy -As someone who orders drinks w/reduced sweetness, I thought the bread was bland and could be a touch sweeter. -Unfortunately, they don't provide you with an actual bag or sleeve to hold your bread. My item was placed in a paper cone. Durian Pull Apart Bread ($6.20): +Even though there was a cloud of powdered sugar, it was surprisingly not too sweet! +The packaging was so cute with the cartoon & Chinese message. -I was expecting something lighter & fluffy, but it was on the denser side. It reminded me more of crumb cake than bread. -Lacked durian filling *My fave for durian buns is in SF Chinatown Side notes: 1.) Self-serve napkins and water 2.) Paper bags are 25 cents 3.) Indoor seating 4.) Walking distance from San Mateo Caltrain station *Verdict: I thought the items I tried looked better than they tasted, but if I was in the area, I wouldn't mind stopping by to try something else.

We love the durian cake of this. They stuff the inside and they made it so fresh. Much yum and I will come Back.

Got a mango mouse cake here and it was the best cake! Their durian crepe was just okay for me. But that mango mousse was not too sweet but definitely not bland. It had great mango flavor and the mouse and whipping cream tasted like cloud and melts in your mouth. Fantastic!!

I cannot rave more about this pastry shop! My friend introduced me to this bakery and it's been my to-go for all things pastries and cakes. The prices are so reasonable and the shop itself is so beautifully designed and has limited seating. Their egg tarts are amazing and one of my favs is the snowy top bun. The taro bun is aesthetically pleasing and delicious and I can't forget their pineapple buns. The cakes are so pretty and it's nice that they have an online system to take orders now. From time to time, they have promotions with their gift cards. Right now for mother's day, they have a buy $50, get $55 or $100, get $115.

    4/4/26 FYI. Todays options.

Quality/Quantity - What a cool discovery. Interesting pastries. We just had dinner at Mala Town Express and came here for dessert. Great selection and fully stocked and CRAZY busy! See all my pictures. I want to try so many things!! Just means I have to keep coming back! Some pastries I have never seen nor tried before. I'm excited. Ambiance - Small local business. Small seating area. One line to pay, not very user friendly, but probably because of this location being so small and you being so busy. Open 6 days a week from 10am to 9pm; closed on Mondays. Limited street parking but we parked blocks away; good thing we like to walk. Service - Self service. Price - Reasonable price, especially for the quality and selection. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2022.

Always a nice variety of pastries and savory treats. Their cakes are delicious and offered by the slice as well. Hygienic because you get tongs and pick your own pastry selections. Haven't had anything I have not liked so far. It's a nice bakery and very clean inside.

My mom took us here . It's a nicely decorated bakery. I tried an egg tart and a matcha roll cake. Egg tart was ok . Would be nice if it's warm. The roll cake was very tasty and flavorful. The matcha had a hint of earl grey to me. The after taste lingered for some time. Restroom was not available at the time we were there. I would love to come back to try their cakes!

Very good cake! They are very flexible and accommodating when i ordered a customized cake. I'm happy with service, responsiveness, taste and design and will be ordering cakes there from now on!

Something for everyone! Sweet and savory items available and you can buy full cakes or slices. The cake was fluffy and perfectly sweetened. The location is perfect for dates in the downtown area, with many parking options near by and other restaurants and entertainment spots near by. Most items are self serve and you pay at the counter. There is seating available to enjoy your treats or snacks.

Wow! We were surprised how good the mango cake that we got. They wrapped it so nicely. Also, they have different pastries that reminds me of 85 degrees. But this place is much better.

I ordered a fruit cake from here Cake was delicious with a lot of fresh fruits. Having mango among the fruit was the stand out thing. Cake was very soft. Cream was light and delicious. Packaging was perfect. They even provided plates, knife, fork and candles. Couldn't have packaged better. Shop had other delicious treats, which all looked excellent. I will have to try all of them.

Got a very cute last minute cake for my niece's 2nd birthday on Super Bowl Sunday. We left it out on the table while we ate (an hour) and the eyes and cheeks started melting off :( The workers were helpful and kind which I always appreciate. They gave me a little kit with candles, small paper plates and tiny plastic forks. Cake itself was a white cake with fruit in the frosting. It was okay. Nothing special. The store is always busy so I definitely plan on trying this place again to see if their other cake flavors/ other pastries in general are more worth it.

    Alice D.

Great selection of baked goods and your typical Asian bakery fare. The line was a little confusing as it was in the middle of the store, but otherwise the process to check out was efficient. The place was pretty busy for a weekday afternoon, but it was clean and well lit which made for a smooth shopping experience. Everything was tasty and reasonably priced as well!

What does "celebration size" mean for cakes?

Great question. Celebration just means birthday cake sizing so think of a standard 6” or 8” round birthday cake. Our Hokkaido and sea salt sponge cakes and taro snowy cake are usually sold in a smaller cute dessert cup form so we use “celebration…

I took off the center - see pic of actual product with the center in tact. That made it taste better. The croissant was my fave part - crispy yet flaky and oh so soft in the middle. Jamon fromage 10/10 Basically, a ham n cheese croissant. This was delish. Unsure if you've eaten at Croissante; but, their jamon fromage isn't that great compared to this. Theirs has mayo, which completely throws off the taste for me. In any case, this was a success. Latte 3/10 Way too milky and not enough flavor.

Order pastries at the counter, they ring you up at the register and provided utensils for dine in which was a nice touch. Water was self serve, bathrooms are available in the bakery. Overall pastries were okay, felt a bit stale and flat in comparison to other bakeries in SF. If you like a slight leaner pastry this might be for you. She was definitely a drive from San Jose to San Mateo but well worth it. When you pull up to her house, it may be difficult to find parking as other customers are picking up-- I ended up waiting for 1 person to pull out of her driveway so that I could park. The street is pretty packed with cars. Can I first say what a pleasure she is in person? Claire is super sweet and she's the reason I love supporting small business. We ordered the Mocha Crunch cake. Current prices are $50 for an 8". It's cash only so be prepared. The cake itself is on the light side (not as light as Asian cakes but I wouldn't call it dense either). Unlike some other reviewers that found it dry-- I highly disagree as it was not the most moist cake I've ever tried-- But it wasn't dry either. It was right in between and good enough for us. The Mocha flavor was lightly infused in the frosting and filling. It wasn't super overpowering but it was definitely there. The crunch topping was perfect and so unique. The only other place I've tried a crunch topping is in a latte from Kamurocho in Pleasanton. They have a "Honeycomb Latte" that is amazing. We served half the cake at one gathering and we ended up bringing the leftovers to another gathering. The cake was devoured. We had a party with 10 people and we couldn't finish the cake! The crunch was really good and special, the cake itself doesn't really present the mocha flavor, as a result, after a few bites, the cake became too sweet. We were all hoping the bitterness from the mocha coffee flavor can balance out the crunch but we were disappointed. Interestingly, we then moved onto eating a chocolate cake from Marvel Cake and the chocolate was able to balance out the sweetness and cleansed our pallet a bit. We all felt that a cup of coffee would be perfect with this cake. The cake inside could also be a bit more moist. So all in all, the crunch got the thumbs up but the overall cake not so much.

I'm also not a huge frosting person, and I believe the cream was buttercream, which was probably the biggest downside for me. It wasn't overly sweet, but the consistency was just too thick for both my husband and me. I even tried leaving it out for over an hour to see if it would soften, but it remained dense. I do wish there were more fruit in the filling. It was mainly cream and a few berries. We sliced the cake on Saturday, and by Monday the exposed part of the cake from where it was cut had become pretty dry. I ended up cutting off the dry outer layer, but thankfully the inside was still moist, so I was able to enjoy the rest of the cake. Ordering through Square was easy. I ordered the 4-inch cake with a marble design, matcha cake, strawberry cream, and strawberries. One thing to note is that if you order the 4-inch cake, there wasn't a section to add custom text. You'll need to email or call them with your order number to let them know what you want written on the cake. Overall, the highlight of the cake was definitely the cake itself. The moisture and strong matcha flavor really stood out and were my favorite parts. If I were to order from this bakery again, I'd probably try a different filling and cream because the buttercream just wasn't for me, but that's more of a personal preference.

Maison Alyzée is a French fine pastry bakery café located on downtown Burlingame's main strip. Dedicated to providing customers with a Parisian escape through handcrafted elegant pastries and artisanal breads, the bake shoppe doubles as pâtisserie and boulangerie, priding itself on meticulous attention to detail. Upon entry, we were welcomed by a brightly lit and very clean venue. Ray and I were immediately drawn to the beautiful marble-topped white counter that encased a gorgeous variety of exquisite treats. The commitment to the elegance of French culture and modern creativity were evident in every luxurious pastry and cake on display. Maison Alyzée is an order-at-the-counter establishment, so we made our purchase with a friendly staff member at the register. Unfortunately, we were told that espresso drinks were no longer available that night since the staff had already begun cleaning the machines. Ok....I never understand businesses that start shutting down things before closing time. This just shows customers that team convenience of closing shop quickly takes precedence over customer experience, essentially omitting availability of items from the menu while they are still open. For this reason, I am docking a star. Luckily, they still had some cold brew available, so I ordered a Lavender Cold Brew with oat milk. Heads-up: Plant-based milks like almond and oat milk incur a $0.75 surcharge. I wish that the lavender was more like a simple syrup, so that the flavour was sweeter and less sharp. Maison Alyzée also offers a selection of breakfast, lunch, and brunch options. I definitely need to return to try one or two or a few of their ostentatious delights.
