A friend shared their birthday cake with us and this was quite scrumptious. It was a delightfully light sweet lemon taste with fresh honeycomb that gave a nice crunch to the cake. We thoroughly enjoyed it and need to try their other crunch cakes in the future!
Was able to try the Mocha Crunch Cake which is hard to find in the Bay Area. I've only been able to find one other place in San Francisco. This cake was very tasty and moist. And of course there was a good crunch to it. I think the only thing about the crunch is that some of the pieces are HUGE but overall...can't complain!
3.5 stars. Ordered a take out cake, 6" mocha flavor. The cake looks bigger than a 6" as it's pretty tall, so don't worry that it will not be enough. We had a party with 10 people and we couldn't finish the cake! The crunch was really good and special, the cake itself doesn't really present the mocha flavor, as a result, after a few bites, the cake became too sweet. We were all hoping the bitterness from the mocha coffee flavor can balance out the crunch but we were disappointed. Interestingly, we then moved onto eating a chocolate cake from Marvel Cake and the chocolate was able to balance out the sweetness and cleansed our pallet a bit. We all felt that a cup of coffee would be perfect with this cake. The cake inside could also be a bit more moist. So all in all, the crunch got the thumbs up but the overall cake not so much.

Super moist- light and the crunch topping is light and crunchy- some crunches can be really hard.. but these were perfect..
I first tried Claire's Crunch Cake at a 2025 Friendsgiving and immediately knew it would be the perfect choice for Christmas dessert. Claire offers four different flavors: lemon, mocha, strawberry, and pineapple. Food 6" Lemon Crunch Cake - $40 A two-layer lemon cake with lemon filling, paired with a bag of lemon-flavored crushed honeycomb to sprinkle over the frosted cake. Light, citrus flavor profiles, and refreshing. 6" Mocha Crunch Cake - $35 A two-layer mocha cake with mocha filling, accompanied by a bag of original honeycomb crunch pieces for topping. A good balance of sweetness and subtle mocha flavor. Between the two, the lemon crunch cake stood out for its citrus-forward icing. Neither cake was overly sweet and packaged in a white cake box with clear windows to easily see the cakes. The recommended approach to sprinkle the crush honeycomb on the cake is the following: Place a sheet of foil or parchment paper underneath the cake, set the cake on top, then pour the crushed honeycomb onto the foil around the base. Gently press the honeycomb against the sides while rotating the cake in a circular motion until the exterior and top are fully coated. Customer Service Although Claire's Crunch Cake is active on Instagram (@clairescrunchcakes), she does not take orders via DM or text. All orders must be placed by calling (650) 344-8690. I called and placed my order which was arranged to be picked up the day before Christmas Eve. When I arrived, several customers were already lined up along the walkway in front of the home. Once I was at the front door, an employee asked what the order name was under and what was ordered. My order was retrieved and I provided the cash. The employee explained the differences between the two cakes. Only cash is accepted as the payment method. Note: During holidays, there may be specific pick-up windows. Ambiance The scheduled pick ups are at a single-family home in San Mateo. A flag banner on the front porch displays the menu with 6" and 8" sizes and cake options. Location / Parking The home is nestled on a narrow residential street with very limited parking. Luckily, I found a spot directly across the street before a wave of holiday customers arrived.
I ordered a mocha crunch cake for birthday. Price was reasonable. They were nice to give a happy birthday ornament and some extra crunch toppings. Overall the cake had a variety taste.

I'll go anywhere for cake. My longtime Yelp bookmark Claire's Crunch Cake bakes & sells out of a house. I called before stopping by & was soon engaged in the deal of the century: $35 cash in exchange for a 6" mocha crunch cake. The yellow cake is a bit dense & not as moist as other crunch cakes I've had, but the mocha flavor is pronounced & the honeycomb bits & pieces really make the cake unique. It's not as good the next day, as the honeycomb flattens out. Just another reason to give into my addiction & finish off the cake the same day I buy it.
I bought the 8in strawberry crunch cake for my fiancés birthday party. Originally ordered for 1pm pick up but Claire was very nice and did her best to accommodate 12 noon pick up instead. It was a bit hard to get a hold of Claire but she called back which I appreciated. The cake looked really appetizing and the honeycomb on top was the star of the cake and cake itself was fine. Personally felt that the strawberries could have been cut smaller since the size made it hard to cut the cake. Later discovered after eating most of the cake that there was a really long hair inside it and that made it not appetizing anymore. A bit disappointed that there was a hair inside it and made me not want to eat the cake anymore so I threw the last portion away.

Picked up a cake for my father's birthday and he absolutely loved it, because it brought back memories of cakes he had growing up in SF. The cake is moist inside and the crunchy bits on the outside are so tasty. As far as cakes go, this one is in a class of it's own.
Claire makes a fantastic crunch cake that is moist, tasty, full of flavor, and given that extra crunch we love. Her cakes rank 5 stars. We are particular about our cakes. Yum - what a delicious cake! I won't lie, it's pretty darn hard to order since she doesn't always pick up and there's no store front. But it's SO WORTH IT. The crunch is almost like a softer, spongier toffee brittle. The inside is just perfect. Fresh, moist, and springy with fresh fruit or cream filling that's the perfect sweetness. I've tried almost every cake in San Mateo and below, and this is one of the best!

After seeing Dion Lim's feature on Claire, I knew immediately I had to try her famous crunch cake...! Omg! It was everything I dreamed of and more! And Claire is such an incredible person-- it was an honor to meet a bay area legend! My partner placed an order over the phone. You may need to try a few times as her VM is full (popular for a reason :P ). But we were DETERMINED and got a hold of her after 3 calls. We scheduled a pickup date for our 7 year anniversary. The day rolls around and we drive to Claire's home bakery. Lots of street parking in this peaceful San Mateo neighborhood. You can easily find her business from the signage on the lawn. And meeting Claire in person was just lovely, she welcomed us as though we were family friends. STRAWBERRY CRUNCH CAKE (6inch): O M G this is the stuff of dreams. I absolutely love honey-flavored desserts and this tastes even better than I imagined... Fluffy yellow cake inside; crispy, airy, malty honeycomb outside-- all wrapped with a luscious whipped frosting. And fresh strawberries throughout. I ordered an 8" strawberry crunch cake for $60 cash. Claire said it serves 12 people. 6" cake is $40 and served 8 people. I asked for crunch on the side, which I definitely recommend if you aren't going to eat the cake all in one sitting or right away. The crunch stays crispy and you can add as much or as little as you like. The strawberry cake itself was not too sweet. The cake is a little dense, and the whipped cream is light and also not overly sweet. The crunch is very sweet, so between the cake and the crunch you can adjust the sweetness to your liking! It was delicious, however I think i prefer my cakes a little lighter. I love that Claire uses fresh strawberries in the middle. I wish there were a few more. I didn't have any trouble getting through on the phone to order the cake and even had to adjust the pick up time the next day, which they were able to accommodate. Pick up was easy and they provided a happy birthday sign to place on the cake. read more

My friend posted a Strawberry Crunch Cake from Claire and I just had to try it. It was a little difficult to get my order in. She only takes orders on a landline and her voicemail is always full. I called every day for a week before I was able to get a hold of Claire. It was worth the effort. Everyone loved the cake, even my mom who is tough to please. She had 3 slices so that tells you how good Claire's cakes are. Be aware that you need to eat it within the same day because the honeycomb gets mushy the next day. My sister went through great lengths to get this cake for me for my birthday. This is the cake you never knew you needed! Actually, I've had this cake before from a bakery in Japantown, SF. I remember it being good... but not "finish the entire cake by yourself good". That may or may not have happened. Either way, I'm told the woman who bakes these cakes is in her 80s! Kudos to her! I've had a small cake business in the past, and I know how hard it is to churn out cake after cake! The cake was super soft and crumbly (in a good way), the frosting was almost like a light whipped frosting, with whole strawberries!she gives you specific instructions on how to cut the cake. If there are left overs, it won't hold up well... so do yourself a favor and make sure you're getting the right size cake! We got a 6inch and it was more than enough for 4 adults and 2 children. Thanks for making my bday cake Ms. Claire! I'll be ordering cakes from you exclusively! P.S. this is not a bakery, it's run out of this sweet old woman's house. Since the "crunch" part of the cake is honey comb, it doesn't hold up well for very long... so don't be late picking up your cake! read more

Ordered Claire's crunch cake and got the strawberry one. These cakes are quite hefty and very dense. The crunch part of itself is pretty sweet however, it balance as well with the rest of the cake that is not as sweet. The strawberry frosting inside did not really taste as much strawberries as I would've liked, but that's fine. I also really like the giant full strawberries inside of the cake. The cake was moist and delicious. It is definitely a good idea to try to eat as much as the cake as you can because the next day the crunch pot melts. I would recommend people to try this and would like to try the mocha flavor next time. read more

Thank you for the AMAZING cake!!! I have had Claire's Crunch Cakes in my bookmarks for a long time and just hadn't had a chance to try it. I wasn't sure how to order so on a previous birthday celebration, I tried calling but I couldn't get a hold of anyone and their VM was full (must be very high demand)! I didn't want to just show up since I had no idea how it worked and whether they would have any cakes without ordering ahead. The next time someone's birthday was coming up I decided I wanted to surprise them with this cake but wanted to be sure I could get my hands on one so I called in about a month ahead, this time a gentleman answered and we got all the details down. On the day of pick up, I arrived and you can immediately smell the goodness from outside! Sadly, they said they didn't have my name down for an order? The gentleman said no problem, they have people show up without an order all the time, although his advice is calling in about a week ahead to ensure everything is set for time of pick up. They asked me if I was okay with waiting about 10 minutes so I did. I am glad that it worked out because the cake was really good! The crunchy pieced are perfectly sweet and salty, they compliment the buttercream and the very rich cake very well! I'm not sure how long they keep that texture as the gentleman did advise to eat the cake as soon as possible, as the crunchy pieces likely won't stay fresh overnight. I did try some right away and then had some more a few hours later and the texture remained great even after a few hours! I will definitely return again-also now I know the whole shpiel with how to order, so I am excited to celebrate future birthdays with Claire's cakes! read more

WOW! We found out about Claire's Crunch Cake thanks to Grub with Mike on TikTok and this at home cake shop is something I truly wish everyone can experience. We had the strawberry crunch cake for a family birthday and it was so much better than I could have imagined. The crunch from the homemade honeycomb is something I have never experienced before. Mixed with the fluffy cake with the fresh strawberries, Claire has truly baked up a piece of art work. This has to be eaten day of pick up as the crunch will not last overnight in the fridge due to the exposure to moisture. I will ALWAYS support a spot like Claire's as it is literally ran out of her kitchen, and you can tell how much love is put into each order. This is what supporting small businesses mean. For those who may be debating between the 6'' and the 8'', I had heard from someone that the 6'' has a better honeycomb to cake ratio since it's a smaller cake. Wishing Claire the BEST success, and maybe even opening a store front one day so more people can experience her magic touch. For those who are lucky enough to be in the area and get a cake, you are in for the best treat! read more

Called 2 days ahead to place an order for a 6" strawberry crunch cake. The homemade cake lived up to the hype! Moist texture of the sponge cake, strawberries were sweet and fresh, good ratio of cream to cake, and the perfect crunch on top. It wasn't too sweet which was great. It was the perfect size for our small group. Feeds about 8 slices. The man who handed me the cake was so nice and gave me great care instructions to refrigerate and how to best serve :) The place is in a residential area with street parking only.
