My favorite place to get bread. Either here or in SSF they are wonderful. When I had a catering business they were my main supplier and people LOVED the bread. From hot, fresh sourdough or Dutch crunch to half cooked (fresh) bread from the fridge, it is all damn good!! Also I enjoy their pizza from time to time and of course the beautiful ladies behind the counter are fantastic and sweet! Be nice to them! One lady makes the sweets and when you get them fresh they are addictive! I have to be careful and control myself around those cookies! The owners (two brothers) are fantastic people who deserve support from the community. They are honest and respectable yet humble folks. I discovered Raymond's Sourdough Bread when a friend noticed their building on the El Camino and told me to check it out. Parking is not easy so plan on parking up the street just past Charles Schwab and walk a bit. As to the bread, WOW yes its delicious! I just enjoyed a big loaf of Raymond's Ciabatta with my home-made soup. They have a nice large show room where you can see what's available and check out the breakfast goodies! Decent store, there's a lot of room but not much for seating. They bake a lot so it's almost certain you will get something fresh. I got a fresh sourdough and the crust was pretty good but the inner filing left more sourness to be desired. Service was stand order at the counter. Nothing amazing but nothing bad either. read more

The sour in sour dough doesn't mean we should get sour puss service! I came in with joy in my heart as a lover of sour dough bread. There were so many to choose from. I asked the lady what's the best seller and she quickly had attitude that all they sell are sour dough bread in different shapes and sizes. Okkkaaaayyy... I let her little attitude slide. I picked up a small round bread that was already sliced up and additionally, I added a cherry Danish bun. She rang me up and I left. I wanted to sink my teeth into that Danish immediately when I got to the car. I opened and was surprised that it was a chocolate chip cookie. No way. I went back in to let her know the error. The way she looked at me and the way she said 'sure' had an attitude of me lying to her about my selection. I instantly felt it and came back and asked her if she thinks im lying to her and that her attitude was not appreciated. I didnt make the mistake, she did. She gave me the cookie and grabed the corrected product for me. I left feeling that I never want to come back again. Bad attitude. Bad customer service. Lack of energy for your own products. Delicious fresh fresh bread rolls and coffee cakes. We picked up some croutons for our salad crunchy flavorful as they should be. We also tried some rolls with fresh butter on top. How exciting to have a fresh sourdough shop in the Peninsula. Prices range from $4-7. We were too late for the day olds, so I can't tell you those prices. The building is large and full of empty space, I hope over time they figure out how to fill it. We picked up some cookies and a chocolate croissant ($3), sliced bread ($7) and a mini sourdough ($4). Yes the pastry wasn't amazing, but for the price is hit the spot. We dug into our mini sourdough bread once we got home. Ate it with olive oil, cheese and butter. Parking is located on the street only. No parking lot. No public bathrooms. Just go in and pick your items and leave. Very simple. I found out the baking locating is in South San Francisco, this is their second shop to sell their product. We are so lucky to have this and not have to hunt local farmers markets. read more

We bought a loaf of their sourdough round loaf (sliced) and made avocado toast with it. The interior was very soft with a very good sourdough flavor. We prefer the crust with a bit more crunchiness. Otherwise I give it a solid 4 stars. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Review of sourdough only: My girlfriend and I got a small sourdough baguette with two servings of butter around 1pm on a Sunday. We were in search of good sourdough after being disappointed at Boudin lol. The place was mostly empty at this hour. The bread was room temperature, but we were pleasantly surprised how tasty it was even at room temperature. We scarfed it down in the car before even making it home! When Raymonds initially opened their bread was high quality. Recently Raymonds bread is spongy and lower quality. Now Raymonds only accepts bank cards which is an inconvenience. On top of that they ask for a tip for the bread. Not going back. Safeway bread is better and less expensive. The woman at the counter was rude to say the least. I love the sourdough here, but my experience with the front desk staff on 11/26 was awful. I accidentally dropped a piece of bread, immediately apologized, and was still planning to buy five or six items (asked her toreplace that one). Instead, the woman at the counter started speaking in Spanish to other customers about how I should pay for what fell on the floor, which was embarrassing and felt very disrespectful. What concerned me most is that the bread that fell on the floor was resold instead of discarded. In any shop, food that hits the floor should be tossed for hygiene and safety reasons. This was an unintentional accident, I apologized, and I was ready to buy more items to help with sales, yet I was treated like I was at fault instead of the victim of rude customer service. In the end, I left and did not buy anything. She spread rumors of me to other customers in Spanish. Not professional and this will impact their store revenue. At the end no sales. read more

Stopped here during errands as one son loves sourdough - grabbed one and a loaf of Dutch crunch - also ordered an almond croissant and some macarons - the women behind the counter didn't even stop talking during my transaction - maybe it was work related I don't know but usually you stop and acknowledge a customer and say thank you - the place was empty and they weren't rushed - a disappointing interaction for sure - but the breads were great, the croissant was fine (forced into a tart shape, kind of hard, but it was 11am), and the macarons were pretty good. Raymond's Sourdough is hands down my favorite spot for sourdough bread. Most times I stop by, the bread is still warm, which makes it even better. **Update since the owner's comments re: Costco bought and resold** The way the danishes, muffins, pastries are displayed (on baking trays, with hand-written labels) made me presume they were house baked so I was surprised to learn they are from Costco. Sorry for misunderstanding what I felt was suggestive visual merchandising! The employee also told me they were indeed homemade. Per the owner, ONLY the danishes and muffins are Costco - does that mean the Streudl I saw wasn't? In any case, minus the slightly strange non-bread-items situation, the actual breads are nice and warm. **Previously** I love that Raymond's opened nearby. I usually have to drive to Backhouse and was pleased to have a closer and much more economically priced fresh bakery option. That said, my husband noticed while the bread might be fresh, the danishes, muffins, and pastries are Costco Biz Center-bought and resold to appear as though baked on site. Probably why the other reviewer ended up with dry bear claws and why the store owner couldn't keep consistent items on the shelf! I occasionally stop by their South San Francisco store, so am very happy to see them open a second store in San Mateo. This store is much bigger. There is a shelf for yesterday's breads and one for today's breads. The selections vary from day to day, but generally include fresh sourdough rounds and baguettes, and Dutch crunch loaves. There are also some cookies and pastries, as well as half-baked bread for you to finish baking at home. I usually cannot wait until I get home to rip into the crusty bread. It's very crumbly, so do not eat this in the car! read more

Whoa! Until yesterday, I didn't know this bakery existed! We weee whizzing by and literally I jumped in my seat, we skidded to the curb, because how we we not check it out? We were the only ones in there on an early Sat afternoon and I hope they stay in business, which likely they will if they're supplying as a wholesale distributor. The place is spartan (in a good way), with freshly baked breads (multiple types), and a clearly marked shelf for yesterdays breads, which I'd bet money is as delicious as the ones you buy in the grocery store. They have a mini cofffee station and other freshly baked goods, e.g. sweets, muffins, cookies, croissants, chocolatey stuff ... many sizes of breads as well. They have a refrigerated section selling breads you can finish baking at home. Service was friendly, prices terrific, parking on pavement easy and free. Don't get better than this! read more

5 stars for the friendly staff, very reasonable prices, freshly baked warm sourdough bread and our past experiences with the round almond Danish. 2 stars for the most recent almond Danishes. We're not sure what happened to the round almond Danish we love, but in our latest visit, they were missing from the display case and replaced with what looked like bear claws. When I asked about it, the employee seemed certain that they were the same almond Danishes. So, we gave them a try and were very disappointed (much drier, more flaky, much less almond paste compared to the round almond Danishes in the past). I was super excited when I found out Raymond is opening a store in San Mateo as it's been a very long time when I had their sourdough and cinnamon raisin bread! Last weekend, I finally got the time to visit the shop. It's a very big and bright store front. Much nicer than their original store. We bought a sourdough baguette (it's fresh out of the oven. It's so hot that my hubby could hardly hold it. ) and the cinnamon raisin bread. Both are not as good as I remember. Will try the round loaf next time. Hope it's better than the baguette. read more

Apparently, you can get their bread at Piazza's, but might as well cut out the middle man! I came around 10 AM, and the bread was still warm! I got a four serving small sourdough and ate 1/3 on the walk back to my car, 1/3 for brunch, and 1/3 for snack. The bread was baked perfectly with a crunchy top, chewy bread inside with the perfect amount of tang and crunchy bottom. I also got an almond Danish. I'm not usually a fan of the gloppy cherry jammy stuff in danishes, but this almond Danish just hit. The texture was almost more like a croissant, and the filling was a marzipan-sort. They had plenty of bread, three types of danishes, and four types of muffins. It's going to be hard not to be a weekly visitor! PSA (parking service announcement): There did happen to be parking directly in front, but it can be stressful to park on El Camino. Super spacious bakery that just opened two weeks ago! It is so clean and bright inside. Parking is easy and the staff is super friendly. Prices are super affordable especially considering the area (see pictures!). I tried a loaf of sourdough and it was perfectly moist, crusty, and sour. The most impressive thing was how hot the bread was. The smell of continuously freshly baked bread was amazing :) I also bought some par baked loaves to bring home and bake. This bakery and bread have been long-standing favorites here in the Bay Area. I am excited about the fact that they're on Madison and El Camino in San Mateo. I love their sliced sourdough, cinnamon bread, dinner rolls bake in a pinch for a weekday meal. The Dutch crunch along with sweet and sourdough baguettes are amazing! You won't get home before taking a bite! Because they don't use preservatives, the baguettes tend to get dry unless you put them in a brown bag and/or a freezer bag. They're perfect for the days event or meal. You can't go wrong with the product that Raymond's bakery provides. Extremely disappointing I was hoping to get good fresh bread but as i walked in i realized Raymonds was the same brand I see in the grocery stores it's not real sourdough either real sourdough contains only a few ingredients like sourdough starter flour and water but if you look at the bag you see the the bread has none of those ingredients an uses cheaper ingredients like enriched wheat flour read more

In addition to our bread, we ordered 3 danish, 2 almond, 1 cheese. Sadly, the woman serving us either couldn't understand English (she seemed to have some difficulty communicating) or, she just didn't pay attention, since I didn't get the cheese one and got all almond. That wouldn't have been bad if they were good, but they lacked almond flavor. Considering they were $4 each, it was way overpriced.
