I recently tried a chocolate cupcake from The Cake Shop in San Mateo at a friend's birthday, and unfortunately I was really disappointed. The cupcake itself was quite dry, and the buttercream had an overwhelming buttery taste rather than the smooth, creamy, silky texture I expected from a professional bakery. There was also very little frosting on top, which made the presentation look unfinished. I'm honestly relieved this wasn't for my son's birthday, because I would have been extremely disappointed. I really wanted to love it, but it just didn't meet the quality I hoped for.
Prompt communication by email made it easy to get this cake ordered while dealing with other things (at work!) It was well packed in a sturdy box for transport. This tall cake served twenty easily (I sliced it in two layers), and was an enormous hit with the newly four year old. The adults loved the chocolate cookie "hole" construction site, everyone wanted to know where it was from. The flavor and texture of the chocolate cake was excellent, much much better than a store cake. I had low expectations for the frosting flavor given the decorations and past experience with kid birthday cakes but this was outstanding. Overall a huge hit and well worth the price for what was also the perfect centerpiece for the table. I will happily reorder from this bakery whenever we need an event cake, it was just so easy and so rewarding.
Paola and Miguel are amazing! I provided a few inspirational photos for some donuts for a bridal shower and they knocked it out of the park! They were the most beautiful (and delicious donuts) I have ever seen! And the level of customer service throughout the complete process was fantastic. Would HIGHLY recommend.
I sent some reference photos that were mostly made of fondant but requested them to not be fondant - and they did an amazing job creating the design with cardstock. My husband said he was impressed with the detail on the Hulk fist! We also got lots of compliments on how light and airy the cake was and how it wasn't overly sweet. My son loved it!
Couldn't have been more happy with our experience with this wonderful bakery and the owners! We used them for our winter themed "baby, it's cold outside" baby shower. Literally every person raved about how beautiful our cake was on the outside and also how delicious it was on the inside! You know the ultimate compliment from an Asian is "not too sweet!" It was perfect!!! We also did a mini dessert bar and the treats were just as beautiful and delicious! Super responsive via email and phone, always accommodating and flexible. Wonderfully creative! Recommend them for any upcoming event!!
Overall I had a great experience ordering from the Cake Shop. I had submitted a quote inquiry on their website and they emailed me with a response within a week. We requested a butter cream cake with a Hello Kitty design (providing inspo pics directly from their Yelp) and 24 cupcakes. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality and effort that is put into the designs. We asked for specific frosting flavors but unfortunately received vanilla frosting for all of the cupcakes, which was not that big of a deal because the cake and cupcakes overall were a big hit with our guests. Would definitely recommend this shop for creative designs and great service!

I've ordered many cakes for special occasions from this shop when I've wanted an extraordinary focal point cake. They never disappoint and the artistry is masterful. The cakes not only look wonderful but they taste good too. With so many cake flavor and filling combinations, you are bound to find something you like. My personal favorite is vanilla or vanilla/chocolate cake with mocha or salted caramel filling. The fondant is thick but that is needed for all the elaborate and detailed decorations I request. This time I wanted a tall cake so I ordered a 2 tier cake with 5" tall layers. The cake was stunning but it was so hard to cut! That was a mistake on my end. Overall, the cakes are excellent in design and taste. You can describe your vision with a few pictures and drawings and they will bring that vision to life. read more

My wife and wanted to support a local business instead of just go to the local grocery. She wanted to do a global or travel theme and sent the above pictures for inspiration for her birthday cake. What we received was very underwhelming sad to say with a bare minimum to no effort in design or to make her vision come true. They were not at all what we wanted. We could've used these exact toppers from Amazon and put them on for ourselves. We would've been better off buying from Costco or Safeway. There was also no preview of the final product which could have been my fault not following up but we trusted them and that was a huge mistake on our end. I also prepaid as I didn't want to deal with that upon pickups big mistake as well as what we received was definitely not worth the premium. They were expensive. On top of that, the cupcakes were very dry, bland and the frosting was oily and runny. At least if the cupcakes tasked good it would've saved this rant. The communication overall was ok minus the no preview of final product. I understand they are a smaller shop but this is not acceptable and we will never come here again. I wouldn't recommend this place to my friend, family, Or enemies. read more

I have ordered more than 10 cakes from Cake Shop in the last few years. Every cake is better than the last. They make stunningly beautiful cakes that are also delicious! Their cakes actually taste amazing. What a wonderful business with wonderful people and amazing cakes. read more

This is our favorite bakery for beautiful birthday cakes. We always get our kiddos cakes here and everyone compliments the cakes appearance. We also order the party platter and it is so delicious. Miguel is great, replies quickly and makes the process easy. Highly recommend! read more

Went to a 2 year olds bday party and they had the cutest cake and I found out it was made From here. It is a really cute cake and was so delicious. Everyone at the party (mostly adults) enjoyed the cake it was gone as quick as it was cut. Defiantly the place to go for your cakes read more

What can I say about cake shop that hasn't been said before! They make your ideas become a reality! We found them on Yelp and ordered their cakes for my baby's first and second birthday! The first birthday was woodland theme and the cake was masterful! Got soooo many compliments on it! For the second birthday this year, we went with baby shark theme since she's been so obsessed and she was so delighted to see her cake. Her eyes lit up and she had the biggest smile! These rice cereal treats were delivered as a part of a birthday, so I can't give a review based on anything else aside from them. The rice cereal treats were for a class birthday, so half of the treats were made for boys and the other half for girls. Being such a simple treat, I thought they were beautifully decorated. They turned something simple into something amazing for the kids. Half of the treats were decorated as Minecraft characters. This worked perfectly for the square/rectangular shapes. The other half of the treats were mermaid themed. I was surprised how much detail could fit on such a small treat. The decorations/details of all the treats stayed on well until they were devoured by the kids. I didn't hear a single complaint about the flavor. Personally, I do not like sweets or chocolate. These treats were not too sweet at all and I could still taste the rice cereal treat well. read more

Make sure you know this location is not open! They do not sell treats in store and are open for 3 hours one day a week. Not sure if this is how it is and yelp and Google never updated or if this is new. Bummer, would have liked to try them. Just wanted to make people aware to not waste their time driving to location or expect to pick up single treats. Website stuff only, large quantity only it seems. Sorry to give it one star but I wasted my drive when it says it's open and pictures suggest you can purchase items there. read more

We have been ordering custom cakes from here since my son was 2 yrs old! The cakes not only look good but taste good, which is important. If you email them a picture of what type of design you would like, they are great about getting back to you with a price! We now started to order my daughters birthday cakes from here, in fact her 3rd birthday cake was a big hit at her party! Must try this place if you haven't already! read more
