I reached out about three weeks prior to my son's first bday after finding The Cake Shop on Yelp. Miguel was responsive by email. The whole transaction was seamless. I wanted a very simple baked cake, and they delivered. I sent Pinterest pictures of my theme and color scheme, and Miguel and his team met every expectation. Was really disappointed with the communication and overall first experience with The Cake Shop. A week ago, I submitted an inquiry on their site for a custom cake. Followed all their prompts and requests per their UI, and submitted with no word. Days later after calling to no avail earlier, I got a text message from the shop asking for all the same information already sent/submitted via their own website to a different email. Fine, I did as instructed, no follow-up for another day. Finally, after one more additional day, I get told that they're all booked up. Made no sense to either not to say that in the first place, or not respond to your own website's submission form. Lame, because their cakes are pretty from what's shown - but terrible execution in terms of customer service/communication. read more

I ordered a cake for my daughter's fourth birthday party. She wanted a Peppa Pig themed cake. After scouring Pinterest, I found a couple of sample pictures and emailed them over to Paola and Miguel. They told me that they could make a similar design and I was just BLOWN AWAY when I saw the final product. I literally squealed in excitement when I picked it up. Not only was the cake beautiful, but it was also very tasty as well. We ordered a chocolate cake with cookies and cream filling. Ordered my son's custom cake from here. Miguel was very responsive via email. We had multiple back and forth regarding cake design and date of pick up but he was very flexible and professional. What can I say about cake shop that hasn't been said before! They make your ideas become a reality! We found them on Yelp and ordered their cakes for my baby's first and second birthday! The first birthday was woodland theme and the cake was masterful! Got soooo many compliments on it! For the second birthday this year, we went with baby shark theme since she's been so obsessed and she was so delighted to see her cake. Her eyes lit up and she had the biggest smile! These rice cereal treats were delivered as a part of a birthday, so I can't give a review based on anything else aside from them. The rice cereal treats were for a class birthday, so half of the treats were made for boys and the other half for girls. Being such a simple treat, I thought they were beautifully decorated. They turned something simple into something amazing for the kids. Half of the treats were decorated as Minecraft characters. This worked perfectly for the square/rectangular shapes. The other half of the treats were mermaid themed. I was surprised how much detail could fit on such a small treat. The decorations/details of all the treats stayed on well until they were devoured by the kids. I didn't hear a single complaint about the flavor. Personally, I do not like sweets or chocolate. These treats were not too sweet at all and I could still taste the rice cereal treat well. read more

Make sure you know this location is not open! They do not sell treats in store and are open for 3 hours one day a week. Not sure if this is how it is and yelp and Google never updated or if this is new. Bummer, would have liked to try them. Just wanted to make people aware to not waste their time driving to location or expect to pick up single treats. Website stuff only, large quantity only it seems. Sorry to give it one star but I wasted my drive when it says it's open and pictures suggest you can purchase items there. read more

I had ordered a cake for my son's first birthday. I had inquired about pricing online and Paola and Miguel were very prompt to reply within 24 hours. Pricing was very reasonable for their cakes and treats. We ended up ordering a Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood themed 2-tiered cake along with 2 dozen rice krispy treats and chocolate covered pretzels in the same theme. Communication was great and on the day of our event, pickup was a breeze. Our cake turned out great and was exactly what we requested. Excellent artistic skills. I chose to provide my own toppers so they provided the cake with the Pocoyo colors and letterings. The cake served as a beautiful centerpiece AND tasted very good. I'm not sure how it managed to happen, given how long they've been around and how many times I've…read moreeaten around 3rd Ave, but I had no idea Dessert Republic even existed, let alone been here. Presumably, never walking down their block of the Main St. alley had a lot to do with it, but who knows how much longer it would've taken if not for my friends suggesting we come here for dinner. Which is kind of ironic, considering the name of this place! While nothing about the outside of Dessert Republic really stands out, the decor inside is great. It may not be all that flashy nor have much of an IG aesthetic, but I like how it has a Hong Kong/Chinatown alley sort of look to it. As for the menu, true to their name, there's no shortage of desserts to choose from, whether it be hot desserts, like glutinous rice balls, sweet tofu, or egg pudding, cold desserts, like mixed fruits, sago, or ice cream sundaes, egg puffs, and crepes. In addition, they also have a bunch of regular food options, from snacks and dim sum items, to rice plates, noodle soups, and even lomo saltado. -- (#A03) POPCORN CHICKEN Not terrible, but not popcorn chicken either. Rather, this felt more like the salt & pepper porkchop dishes I've had in the past - the batter was thick, the chicken was unmarinated, it was seasoned with just salt and pepper, and it was topped with cut peppers instead of crispy basil. -- (#S01) BRAISED BRISKET & WONTON NOODLE SOUP Overall, this was a mixed bag. On the plus side, the bowl was decently loaded, the wontons were plump, and it had chunks of beef tendon, which were tender. On the other, while the noodles were fine, the veggies were way overcooked and the beef was chewy. -- (#M08) SUPER STRAWBERRY - Strawberry Freeze, Aloe Jelly, and Strawberries Topped with Strawberry Ice Cream Undoubtedly, this had a lot of strawberry flavor to it. Even though the strawberry freeze didn't do a ton for me, especially as it melted, I liked how well the aloe jelly, strawberries, and ice cream complemented each other. As far as service goes, I've seen some folks mention running into issues, but I've actually found it to be entirely unremarkable, for better or worse. Each time I've been here, the workers haven't really gone beyond the basics (take orders, bring out dishes, take care of checks, etc.), but I never really expect anything more than that either. Still, they do seem to be relatively friendly and get orders out decently fast, which certainly counts for something. Since I've clearly only had a small handful of what their menu has to offer, there's the distinct possibility (probability?) that I haven't had the best of what Dessert Republic has to offer. However, based on what I've ordered and my friends' egg puffs and sweet tofu that I've tried (both were fine), the desserts here definitely seem to be the safer bet overall. Which is handy since they stay open so late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights (until 1am).

Granted, my friends probably hyped it up a bit too much while we were waiting in line (I think it was already their second or third time going), but, regardless, I thought it was just okay. Fast forward all of these years later and I have to say - whether it's because my tastes have changed or because I found a flavor that I really liked, this place is so much better than I remember! With so many boba joints and dessert shops nearby, it's pretty easy to overlook Beard Papa's. Being located on the edge of downtown/3rd Ave certainly doesn't help, but, for something quick and convenient (and different), they're a decent option. While the menu may not look all that extensive, it has a fair amount to offer when you consider how you can mix and match your choice from their near dozen cream puffs/eclairs and handful of cream fillings. Add to that the occasional seasonal/featured flavors they'll have and their assortment of lava cakes and cheesecakes and there's plenty to choose from! -- ST. VALENTINE'S RASPBERRY ECLAIR - Raspberry Cream Custard-filled Eclair with White Chocolate Coating and Raspberry Frosting This was a seasonal offering (admittedly, an older one), but if they ever added this to their regular menu, I'd easily get this again. However the location is right next to a freeway so accessing the place often you may have to wait for a long line of cars trying to get onto the freeway.

If I could give The Cake Shop 10 stars I would. The were very accommodating and were able to complete a wonderful creative last minute birthday cake in even though they were swamped. Everybody loved the themed capoeira themed cake nt only because of the creativity but because the vanilla cake was so light and fluffy and the blueberry filling was not overwhelming but perfect. It wasn't overly sweet, but the consistency was just too thick for both my husband and me. I even tried leaving it out for over an hour to see if it would soften, but it remained dense. I do wish there were more fruit in the filling. It was mainly cream and a few berries. We sliced the cake on Saturday, and by Monday the exposed part of the cake from where it was cut had become pretty dry. I ended up cutting off the dry outer layer, but thankfully the inside was still moist, so I was able to enjoy the rest of the cake. Ordering through Square was easy. I ordered the 4-inch cake with a marble design, matcha cake, strawberry cream, and strawberries. One thing to note is that if you order the 4-inch cake, there wasn't a section to add custom text. You'll need to email or call them with your order number to let them know what you want written on the cake. Overall, the highlight of the cake was definitely the cake itself. The moisture and strong matcha flavor really stood out and were my favorite parts. If I were to order from this bakery again, I'd probably try a different filling and cream because the buttercream just wasn't for me, but that's more of a personal preference.
