French toast latte, bee happy matcha
    Neha N.

Cute new coffee shop near hillsdale mall in San Mateo. Parking lot has a decent number of spots thankfully, but I could see it being hard to find it spot during peak times. The shop is actually pretty big and open, and it's well maintained inside. Staff are very friendly and even came and handed us our drinks/food which we didn't expect! I got the french toast latte and my partner got the bee happy matcha latte. We both really enjoyed them :) the cups they came in were pretty big too.

I found this place on tiktok from their post about their soft opening. I wanted to try this place and it didn't disappoint at all! We went on a Saturday afternoon and there was plenty of parking out front. It is a pretty spacious place and I love how it has natural light that makes the place stand out! As soon as we came in we were greeted with a friendly place. With it being our first time here we asked the barista what they would recommend. We tried the Toasted Saddle. The toasted marshmallow cold foam was to absolutely die for! I love how the cold foam gave the cold brew just enough balance between bitter and sweet. I can't wait to come back and try their matcha and use my punch card!

I work nearby and was so touched when the owner personally dropped off loyalty cards at our office, such a sweet gesture! On my first visit, the barista recommended the New Year's Bliss Vanilla Matcha with Strawberry Cold Foam, and it is incredible. If you're like me and love a sweeter matcha, this is the drink for you. The 'Western Chic' interior is adorable, and I'm so excited they offer Reviver Red Bulls, the Peninsula definitely needed a spot like this! I'll be back soon to work my way through the rest of the menu.

If you're getting your car washed next door then fine, it makes sense. Otherwise, the coffee was just ok, my latte tasted water down to be honest. Parking is hard to find or you have to park across the street and cross el Camino. The interior is adorable and the workers are also really nice!

Cute little coffee shop next to Jacks Car wash. Love the pink and cow print interior. I had the toasted saddle which is a vanilla cold brew with a toasted marshmallow cold foam and a muffin. The muffin was delicious! I loved the marshmallow cold foam on the drink. The coffee itself was ok it tasted a little watered down for my taste. It is fairly new and they might be perfecting their drinks still, so I will return in the future during my next car wash.

Saw this place on a Instagram reel and it looked so cute!! The place was decorated very cute and on theme. Was welcomed by staff as soon as I walked in. The drinks were also super delicious. They have your regular coffee drinks but also some specialty drinks. It was great! I would come back for sure!

So good! The decor in the shop is so cute! I went for their soft opening week and it's really great coffee! I want to work my way through the rest of the menu they look like they know what they're doing ! Excited to try the energy drinks next! The girl was super friendly. They definitely need a bigger sign on the door or building before their grand opening though! Blink and you miss it, I thought it was part of the car wash next door. Super clean and def will be back!

New coffee shop in San Mateo that took over the previous Jill's coffee next to Jack's car wash. Owner was very nice and the place is spacious! New Years Bliss was yummy, not too sweet and can taste the matcha. Will come back to try other drinks :)

I got an iced HK style coffee + milk tea which I've never had before but was so delicious. I'd definitely come back to try the other fruity drinks too! we ordered the tom yum noodles, preserved vegetables & pork noodle soup, salt & pepper fries, and the HK style french toast with peanut butter. the french toast was our favorite- it was fluffy and chewy and was just like the HK classic. the noodle dishes were both so hearty and flavorful too, and the portions were a good size. it did take a bit long for everything to come out, but it did seem like there was only one person working and she was very kind and accommodating when we had questions about our order. we didn't mind at all, especially sitting outside and enjoying the view! overall, I'll for sure be back for the drinks and to try some other HK style street food.

We were initially going to just stop by to grab drinks, but decided to sit down and order a few snacks as well. The location is right behind Foster City's Central lake and the weather was nice, so we decided to sit outside. We ordered the HK style milk tea, OG lemon tea, french fries, and the siu mai. If I just ordered the drinks, it might have been a better experience. The fries were okay, nothing special - they were a bit softer than I like. The siu mai was just bad. I'm not sure where it comes from, but it was gummy in texture and tasted like frozen food. There were only 5 small pieces and we still couldn't finish it. The drinks were priced fairly, but the snacks were overpriced for what it is. You order at a kiosk so there isn't much service to talk about, but we did have to ask for a ketchup a few times before they remembered to bring it to us. Maybe I'll go back to try the actual food dishes.

I came in around 9am and they were already sold out of some items, but I did manage to get my hands on one of their famous croissants! I ended up getting the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant and Chocolate Chip Cookie. Both pastries are PHENOMENAL. The Bay Area truly does have a fantastic pastry (especially croissant) scene, but Backhaus is definitely up there. I loved how well the flavors came through in both, and the textures were great. They were also baked perfectly. I definitely want to try more of their offerings in the future! In general, this place well deserves the hype.

The chocolate croissant was just as good, featuring the perfect balance of sweet and slightly bitter chocolate wrapped in layers of buttery, flaky pastry. The café offers plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, with additional space upstairs and downstairs. There's a self-ordering kiosk at the front that takes place instead of a real person taking your order. There's 3 tables to sit and do work or just chat with friends. We got our drinks pretty quickly after ordering. Drink: Strawberry Matcha Einspanner (8.2/10): Super creamy matcha latte! The default is 50% sweetness and it was honestly perfect. I got this drink with whole milk and the matcha combined very well into the drink with no clumps or separating after initial mix. The strawberries tasted very fresh and added a nice tartness and sweetness to the drink! Would definitely get again when I'm in town.

TL;DR: expensive drink but worth every penny…read more I popped by on a random weekday afternoon after a client meeting and was looking for a sweet treat. There was no line at all, so my drink came out really quickly. Service was efficient, and basically non existent since you order on your phone, and pick it up from the counter. They have some seats indoors and a few benches outside, it's pretty spare and basic inside which is all you really need in a cafe. I saw a lot of people getting takeout, and some small groups around tables chatting. I was debating between the matcha and houjicha, then got intrigued by the black sesame, and finally after much internal debate, decided that black sesame + houjicha would work best together and wanted the einspanner. They honestly have so many intriguing options like Earl grey matcha einspanner??? Banana pudding?? I have to come back. My only complaint is the price but I guess everything is expensive these days. $8/9 for one of these drinks hurt my heart though. On the flavors: while I wish there was more black sesame (I always do), this was one of the most satisfyingly black sesame items I've had from a cafe. It went really well with the toasty roasty notes from the houjicha and I think they added enough of both amidst the milk to make it a very satisfying drink. This can be rare because a lot of places drown out all the flavors with too much milk. The best part though, was the einspanner - the sweetened whipped cream on top really brought the whole drink together and was so delicious. It made it just that little bit more decadent. I got it at minimal sweetness and at first though it wasn't enough, but I was glad I did as I worked my way through the cup, it was perfect.
