I had the soup dumplings, steamed bbq pork bao buns, and fried rice, all of which were big portions and only paid $40. Great bang for your buck and tasted phenomenal.

Dough zone closed for a day and it led us to find a new local gem! Har gow was excellent. HK bestie approved. Multiple chunks of shrimp in there. Fish roe on top was a great touch. Beef noodle was a surprise hit. Not salty, not oily, just pure strong broth of beef. Loved the ramen-esque noodles that were chewy and curly. HK bestie says meat was tender and soft. Jellyfish seaweed salad was very refreshing!! Sesame, vinegary flavor with a bit of spice. Super good. On the saltier side so we took it home to add kelp noodles for a next day meal. Super glad we found this place. The staff was kind and we got free hot tea. Definitely coming back to try their signature items like XLBs.

Upon Yelp notifying me about this new restaurant that had recently opened, my curiosity was piqued and I decided to dine here 1.5 months ago for Saturday 5:30pm dinner and took some notes throughout my meal: Street parking wasn't too hard to find, and the city has nearby parking garages as well; I had to walk a few blocks. When I arrived, I passed by their soft opening sign at the entrance. Most of the restaurant was full but we didn't have to wait. Green onion pancake - very thin but not oily. Unfortunately had barely any green onion and was not very flavorful. It was served with a mildly spicy curry. My parents and I thought this mediocre and would not order again. Shrimp & chive dumpling - steamed without sauce. Fresh, naturally sweet shrimp, flavorful. Pork Shanghai soup dumpling - plenty of broth, flavorful Pan-fried pork buns - crispy at the bottom, petite sized, but flavorful. Served on a cute tiered stand. Braised beef noodle soup - reasonably tender beef. Noodles were al dente and springy. Mom thought the broth was a little bland. The service was excellent; the waitress was super friendly and let us know they pride themselves on not using any MSG. She also relayed that the chef makes the dumplings fresh and it takes 10 Chinese yellow-hair chickens to make the broth. Tea was complimentary. Overall, this place was reasonably good but if we were to compare this to a SF Chinatown restaurant I had previously reviewed, my mom and I both agree the Chinatown one is better in terms of portion size, flavor, and price. I wouldn't be opposed to returning here, though!

We love this place! Came back 2x in a week. Food was really good and service was good too. We ordered the same food and they all taste delicious. We will definitely be back because their baked buns was aold out again. :(

Overall, the quality and taste of the dumplings here are good, but not great. Visited in early April during their soft opening, and got seated right away around 5 PM on a Wednesday. My friend and I had the following: -Kurobuta Pork Shanghai XLB (4/5) -Shanghai Pan Fried Buns (4/5 , mostly for the eye-catching presentation) -Beijing Scallion Beef Dumplings (3.5/5) -Shrimp Dumplings (3.5/5) We finished everything, but didn't find anything particularly noteworthy or memorable. Service was good and the food came out quickly. Restaurant was clean and casual.

I've been wanting to try Shang Dumpling since it's new. Sharing the space with HiroNori ramen the left side and Shang is on the right side. There was a little wait on a Sunday night at 7:15. Service was nice and quick. All the food came out in timely order. Faves were all the xlb and dumplings. The skin isn't too thick and good amount of soup/filling inside. The chicken wings were good too. Crispy and good flavor. Small portion for the green beans and stir fried noodles though. Prices are reasonable for xlb and dumplings. Street parking and public garage around

Shang Dumpling opened in downtown san Mateo and I have been meaning to try this place. I wished I went with more people but next time have to come try different dishes. We were seated right away on a Friday night at 6:30 but this place was packed. The server told us we had the option to order through him or the QR code. I opted to order through the QR code and submitted my order but it somewhat didn't go through since I saw a later table sat down and had a printed receipt of what they ordered. I checked in with a different waitress and asked if my order went through and she said she will check. She gave me a thumbs up so I thought my order went through but we were sitting there for like 10-15 mins and she came back that my order didn't go through and asked if I actually submit it. I didn't screenshot so didn't have a way of proving it so we ended up re ordering. The pork XLB was very juicy and was had a lot of filling but was lacking a bit of salt. The pan fried bun were good but felt the filling was lacking. The last dish ordered was the thick noodles which I would personally skip. It came last and was very oily. For 3 dishes it was roughly $50 before tip which was quite expensive. I saw other tables ordering jelly fish and the mini pan fried dumpling bun which I wanna try next time.

Pretty solid new dumpling restaurant entry for downtown San Mateo The xlb was definitely a stand out being juicy, flavorful and noticeably fresh. Following nearby table trends I tried the pan fried pork buns - although I've never favored them as much as xlb they were good. Portions felt a little light for the price - particularly the fried rice and olive green bean (fyi very olive forward flavor). I'm not sure what makes their food Shanghai cuisine- perhaps I ordered the wrong dishes but everything tasted pretty typical for a dumpling restaurant. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and from what I've seen tends to crowd fast.

I'm a bit confused on the style/region of Chinese cuisine here. There's a huge Shanghai photo on the wall (like floor to ceiling sized), though the staff speak Cantonese. Friendly and fast service btw. One thing for certain is that the XLB are solid - prob the most soup and least skin ratio on an xlb I've had in the Bay Area. Good texture. The beef noodle soup was good and didn't have a lot of msg (I wasn't sleepy or thirsty after) but idk what kind of beef noodle soup it was. No sauerkraut. Noodles were thinner and almost ramen esque? Beef super tender tho. Would come back and try the dumplings.

We came on a Sunday night and waited a little bit to get seated. They were pretty busy. We were asked right away if we wanted hot tea or water. Food came relatively quickly. We decided to do family style and tried a few dishes. Everything was pretty good. If I had to rank, I like the pan- fried pork buns the most, then the soup dumplings, then dumplings. They did a good job locking the broth in for pan fried pork buns and soup dumplings. Make sure you bite into it carefully so you don't burn your mouth. Chicken wings were crispy. Stir fried thick noodles were chewy. We would like to come back and try other dishes.

New chinese restaurant at San Mate Downtown. This is the third restaurant that occupy this space as far as I remember. The layou doesn't change from previous restaurant as I recall. It is nice and clean decoration.wit kind of open kitchecn but separated by glass screen. We got seating right away. The menu is not overwhelming. It has appetizer, dumpling, XLB, fried bun, meat, dimsum, seafood, veggie, fried rice. We ordered pork XLB, Sichuan spicy wonton, and beef and mushroom fried rice. Food was ready pretty quickly. Both xlb and beef mushroom fried rice are yummy. The xlb skin is thin and the liquid and meat are good. The beef mushroom fried rice is very unique. I cannot stop eating it. This is the first time I have this combination. The sichuan spicy wonton is also yummy. It is not too numbing. Overall it was a nice lunch and for sure will be back next time to try other stuff.

Shang Dumpling's dim sum dishes are as described to me - delightful and delicious. (Like that alliteration?) Service is friendly but brisk as it must be given the restaurant's popularity during a lunch or dinner rush. There are around 11 tables in a small space that also includes the kitchen and prep area. Bonus! A diner can watch the dumpling preparation behind glass as you wait to be seated. I ate here for lunch sitting alone but truthfully the dumplings here are best shared with a group and eaten family style for variety and ease of sampling multiple dishes. My Shanghai pork soup dumplings had that thin soft dough wrapper found in the freshest dumplings with a tasty and piping hot soup and meat filling when they arrived at the table. My pork and shrimp sue mai was also juicy and excellent. Yum! A suggestion for the owner-it might be good to offer a lunch sampler plate of your freshest and fastest moving dumplings for those lunch time loners (like me today!). But given the obvious priority on fresh preparation I understand if "samplers" don't fit this model. A well deserved five stars!

    Vivien L.

Got 4 items to share with a friend. Everything tasted like typical dim sum and the star of the show was the pork XLB. One of the best I've had. It's bigger than others + generous soup inside. Returning just for that in the future

I went on a Saturday at noon and there was just one couple dining; when I left, there were 4-5 more groups. The inside of the restaurant looked aesthetically pleasing. The bathroom was quite old but clean. One of the 2 dispensers was out of soap, which I had hoped they would check as part of the restaurant opening and closing procedures. Our waiter was very friendly throughout the meal and offered food suggestions for us to consider. Beef pancake roll - unique seasoning. I liked how they included shredded lettuce for that crunchy texture. It was wrapped in green onion pancake, so it was a bit oily and required some chewing. My dad didn't care for this. I initially thought this isn't bad but by the end of eating my half, I was ok not ordering this again. I think it's worth trying once. Beef stew noodle soup - beef was flavorful but I needed to chew it a bit, so if you have elderly loved ones with dentures, keep that in mind! Noodles were al dente. My mom didn't like how the portion is very small. Pork & crab meat XLB (Xiaolongbao, soup filled dumplings) - First thing I thought when the server placed the bamboo steamer down on the table was, 'wow, these are SO small'. But regardless, I could definitely taste the crab, and the broth was flavorful and plenty. If I were to dine here again, I would order this. Chicken & vegetable boiled wontons in chicken soup - The skin of the wontons was springy and unique. The broth had sesame oil but otherwise was pretty mild/bland. My mother liked the broth from the beef stew noodle soup more. Pan fried chive dumpling - contained egg, glass noodles, and a lot of garlic and chives. Very yummy and would get this again. Pork & shrimp potsticker - was juicy. The skin a little thick. They came with a tiny side of sweet, sour, spicy pickled veggies. I thought this dish was mediocre. High tail shrimp & pork steamed dumplings - The pork was dense, which wasn't necessarily bad. The dumpling was slightly juicy but wasn't broth-filled. My mom didn't care for this dish. Overall, I would rate this restaurant a 3.5/5 but will round it up. My mom thought the food was quite mid and admitted it as such to the waiter after we paid the bill. I'm honestly not sure if I would return, given all the wonderful other cuisines/choices here in the downtown area - perhaps if I'm craving chive dumplings or crab dumplings again.

Constantly trying to wave down someone to get an update on our food. Ugh. Now we just want to leave. We want to cancel the other 2 entree and ask for the check. Walked up to speak to the manager (?) and he comped the one dish for us and we left. I noticed a review that said if you're not Chinese, they won't serve you. Lol, we are Chinese and we ordered in Cantonese. Still bad service

Decor is contemporary Chinese with high ceilings and large TV screens. Yan is very popular so expect their small parking lot to be full and difficulty finding street spaces, especially on weekends. Instead of dim sum carts, the table places orders on paper, marking the quantities of selected dim sum. Despite the capacity crowd, food came quickly. While every dim sum was delicious based on our 9-person table consumption that had almost no take-home boxes, the Chicken Feet was my favorite, with extra large claws and unique, delicious marinade sauce (I don't recall this with chicken feet elsewhere). Unlike most Chinese restaurants, the service staff were surprisingly cordial. While very busy, they still managed to be quick and smile. Waitresses were accommodating and helped us take group photos as we celebrated Dad's 94th birthday with three tables of 25 people. They also provided plates and forks and helped serve a sheet cake we brought. It's obvious there are many regular customers, and we were very pleased and will be back too.

We ordered six dishes and two dishes ran out, with one never being communicated to us that they were out until the end of the meal. Food came out incredibly slow and the portions seemed smaller than our other dinner visits. All the while the owner is having servers rush to her table next to us with seafood and alcohol. The experience felt slow and terrible. It's almost excusable if it was busy, but it was not. Even with less people in the restaurant, the service remained slow for us. To wrap it all up, we decided to pay in the front due to slower service and was met with attitude and being questioned about the legitimacy of our receipt to pay. ??? The only good thing I would say is that the food tasted great, but pairing it with how slow the food came out and the negative attitude we met, I would not recommend nor patron this place again. I don't wish to take the chance to be met with this experience again.

UNREAL. they're literally bite-sized, super crispy on the bottom, and just explode with flavor. hands down the best pan-fried buns in downtown San Mateo period. also can we talk about how clean this place is?? usually traditional Chinese spots can be kinda sticky and chaotic, but this place is literally spotless. they have an open kitchen so you can literally watch the aunties wrapping dumplings right in front of you. super cool vibe, and the little house-shaped lights on the wall are cute as hell. Def coming back, go check em out!

SMACKED ORGANIC CUCUMBER SALAD - a fav and will always order this big in menu. Love the fresh, Garlicky flavor! 28. MINI PAN FRIED PORK BUN (12) - enjoyed this but saw later on the menu there was a regular size PAN FRIED PORK BUN, meant to get #27 (6). 38. MARINATED BEEF ROLL PANCAKE - this was hot, flakey, good beefy flavors. I'd order again. 40. GARLIC STRING BEANS - while this was good I got the impression this was already par-cooked and re-wok fried on order. Wrinkly string beans is usually an indication of NOT fresh cooked. I'd return to MY DUMPLING to try the other menu items except definitely NOT the string beans.
