When I saw the sign I thought "another dumpling place?!?" I'm eating my words. I had lunch this week and I need to go back as soon as possible. XLB are so full of soup with nuance in each bite. The chive, shrimp, and pork dumplings taste so fresh and flavorful. Even their table chili oil is not just hot and salty, but umami and clean. Shang Dumpling's dim sum dishes are as described to me - delightful and delicious. (Like that alliteration?) Service is friendly but brisk as it must be given the restaurant's popularity during a lunch or dinner rush. There are around 11 tables in a small space that also includes the kitchen and prep area. Bonus! A diner can watch the dumpling preparation behind glass as you wait to be seated. I ate here for lunch sitting alone but truthfully the dumplings here are best shared with a group and eaten family style for variety and ease of sampling multiple dishes. My Shanghai pork soup dumplings had that thin soft dough wrapper found in the freshest dumplings with a tasty and piping hot soup and meat filling when they arrived at the table. My pork and shrimp sue mai was also juicy and excellent. Yum! A suggestion for the owner-it might be good to offer a lunch sampler plate of your freshest and fastest moving dumplings for those lunch time loners (like me today!). Wow, yet another dumpling place popped up, but this one is pretty good! Xiao long bao are filled to the brim with soup. It came out piping hot. We got the truffle flavor and it had good truffle taste. Green beans were delicious. I thought the wontons in chili sauce was mid. I would try the fried chicken next time. read more

I'm a bit confused on the style/region of Chinese cuisine here. There's a huge Shanghai photo on the wall (like floor to ceiling sized), though the staff speak Cantonese. Friendly and fast service btw. One thing for certain is that the XLB are solid - prob the most soup and least skin ratio on an xlb I've had in the Bay Area. Good texture. The beef noodle soup was good and didn't have a lot of msg (I wasn't sleepy or thirsty after) but idk what kind of beef noodle soup it was. No sauerkraut. Noodles were thinner and almost ramen esque? New chinese restaurant at San Mate Downtown. This is the third restaurant that occupy this space as far as I remember. The layou doesn't change from previous restaurant as I recall. It is nice and clean decoration.wit kind of open kitchecn but separated by glass screen. We got seating right away. The menu is not overwhelming. It has appetizer, dumpling, XLB, fried bun, meat, dimsum, seafood, veggie, fried rice. We ordered pork XLB, Sichuan spicy wonton, and beef and mushroom fried rice. Food was ready pretty quickly. Both xlb and beef mushroom fried rice are yummy. The xlb skin is thin and the liquid and meat are good. The beef mushroom fried rice is very unique. I cannot stop eating it. This is the first time I have this combination. The sichuan spicy wonton is also yummy. It is not too numbing. Great new spot! Their soft opening is busy, so be prepared to wait if you go during peak hours. Interior is modern, clean, spacious. There's a glass window so you can see the kitchen cooking. We had a lovely weekday lunch at Shang Dumpling, a welcomed new addition to the downtown San Mateo food scene. They had opened 3/18/26 and are currently in soft opening. The restaurant's interior is brightly lit and features a good number of tables. A large photograph of Shanghai adorns the main wall. We truly appreciated the helpful tips and the overall positive atmosphere provided by the service. The Shanghai soup dumplings (aka xlb) were impressive! There's 6 to an order, but bigger than what we've seen at other places. What's particularly impressive is the amount of tasty soup in each dumpling; the dumpling held together well too. We learned from our wait staff that each xlb is made-to-order, which could mean longer wait times when they are busy. We came during late lunch on a weekday so it wasn't a problem. The other stand-out was the baked char siu bao; it had come out of the oven not long ago and was recommended to us. They were good: great balance of fillings and bun, and warm buns are always good! I wish they had kept it a bit warmer though. Other dishes were good too but it's the xlb we will be returning for. We were told the beef noodle soup and laksa are also popular so we might try one of those next time. read more

Stopped in and the Xiao long bao was s the stand out of the meal. Thin skin, tons of soup, and they held together like pros. Easily the thing I'd come back for. Baked pork buns were great as well -- crisp snow crust top, soft bun, solid filling. Pan‑fried buns were good too, just not on the same level as the XLB. Garlic cucumber was basic and did its job, nothing more to say here. The din tai fung ones are still the standard. Service was friendly, staff had good recs, and the space is bright and clean with an open kitchen. Great addition to the downtown dining scene! My coworker and I stopped in for lunch during their soft opening. It was pretty busy and we were seated quickly. You can see the kitchen behind glass when you walk in. We were so hungry we ordered so many dumplings. The mala beef shank was nice and spicy. The garlic cucumber was good, but we liked the spicy mala sauce that we soon put the cucumbers in with the shanks. The mini pan fried pork buns were tasty, though not a lot of soup, as expected. The shrimp, chicken and chive dumplings were well seasoned and were my favorite out of all the dishes. Siu mai was good with a big shrimp on top. The Shanghai pan-fried pork buns came last and were perfectly prepared. Right amount of soup inside, well fried bottom without being overcooked, and very tasty. I did wish they had a little more ginger for us, but I'll just ask for more next time. This is a great dumpling option on 3rd. I did see other reviews with maybe better then ding tai fung #2 Green bean w/ salted olive it's very favorful no green (grassy favor) but the beans are not super soft, not super salty even with the olive. #3 sichuan spicy wontons. The wonton is more like Hong Kong style wonton, it has shrimp and pork inside kind of big it is favors, first bite not spicy but the Sichuan pepper will attack you after. I think I prefer smaller wonton We also ordered pan fried pork buns it's good too is soft bottom is crispy but the dough a little thick it is very juicy and pork favorful. Hor Goe Shrimp Dumpings, it's average but it's more expensive then most dim sum restaurant. Braised beef noodle soup is very bland not as much favor as everything else, noodle thin type. The newest dumpling kid on the block, Shang dumpling fills the old space occupied by Nick the Greek but with a very well done interior space. San Mateo is not lacking in dumpling spots, but Shang dumpling sets itself apart with their VERY generous Xiao Long Baos. You know it's going to be good when the skin is so thin that you can see the puddle of delicious soup inside each bao. On my trip on Sunday his sleepy Sunday morning, I ordered the crab and pork XLB (authentic, with visible and tasty delicious chunks of crab meat), shrimp har gow (good, but probably not as much bang for your buck), and eggplant tofu (perfect texture and taste, not too salty). As someone who frequents the downtown area, I can definitely see Shang dumpling falling into my rotation of options as the XLB favorite. Definitely worth a trip! read more

First time trying out this restaurant downtown. Everything was delicious, especially the Shrimp Eggrolls (which I forgot to take a picture of lol). The service was very good as well, and it was a nice and calm atmosphere while I was eating. The Fried Chicken actually made me wanna try more chicken that remains on the bone, instead of the boneless version. SUPER flavored and savory! The Pork Buns were delicious as well, but be careful when you bite into them. They're filled with yummy but VERY HOT soup, and I learned that the hard way when I scaled the side of my mouth and got juice on my shirt a bit. To be fair to the restaurant, they warn you on the menu that the Pork buns have soup in them, and to take small bites to start. Finally, the Shrimp Eggrolls were the absolute BEST part of the meal. Discovered this new xlb place in San Mateo. I arrived when they first opened and was seated right the way. Ordered the fried tofu and XLB. Loved the fried soft tofu - lightly coated, crispy, fresh and not over seasoned. 6/5 The XLB skin was thin and tender super yummy with a good amount of broth. The filling was good but could use a little bit more flavor. 4/5 I would definitely be back to try other items. We couldn't pinpoint the flavor of the daily milk pudding (maybe chocolate or coffee?) but we were amused it looked like abalone. They're in soft opening phase, so do not dine if you're in a rush. They forgot our sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings) and when it came out, then dumplings weren't fully cooked (probably because they were rushing it). Hopefully we don't get sick They took back the dish and off our bill because I had to leave. Unfortunately, the lady who took our card forgot to return to us before she left for break and it took awhile to flag someone down to get our card back. They did give us the milk pudding on the house tho (but they had also given the table next to us the dessert for free when they were just asking about it too). The pan fried chive dumplings are great with crispy thin skin and juicy inside with pork, chives and shrimp. Sichuan spicy wontons are quite spicy, also large with a whole shrimp inside. Sichuan beef shank was sweet, savory and spicy. Beef itself was nicely marinated and soft. Ordered the vegetables with garlic, didn't realize it would be a mix of vegetables, still quite good. Lets start about how I saw this place on Instagram and thought I should go try a new place over my usual spot (My Dumpling). I came in on a Sunday around 1. There was a bit of a wait since it's around lunch hour. When we finally sat down, there is an ordering QR code on the table. One of the male waiters few minutes later tells us to order the XLBs first because it takes longer to cook. So I did that and then I ordered fried rice afterwards. Let's just say service is the worse here...we were asked what water we wanted by the male waiter, which was never brought by him. Female waiter comes by and I tell her we ordered already, but she asks what we want to drink. At this point, Im seeing communication is lacking. Also, they were very attentive to the tables right of us, which was a friend who brought their family. It's fine to chit chat with them,but show the same service to your customers First dish we get it the XLB. It's ok. I don't think it's the best. It tastes a lil sweet, which isn't my preference. When we first got it, male waiter notices we didn't get any ginger and he said he will bring it. NEVER came...we were already half finished and I see him walking by looking but never asks...Second dish was the fried rice. Just ok too...I thought the taste would be something special, but it just tastes like any regular wok hay fried rice...Third dish is the small pan fried XLB. The crispy edges make it more special. My suggestion is to either order this or the bigger size because the filling taste the same aside from the difference in the crispy edges/texture. FINALLY, the pan fried dumpling took FOREVER to come out...we were sitting there for a while and I see another table get it before us...I tell the waiter we are missing one more dish. He tells me it takes long to cook...I am in disbelief here. Displaying the dish looks "cool" but its can get annoying to grab the dumplings We asked for water refill and guess what? The male waiter comes by and goes to the other tables to give them water even to the table that is about to leave! OMG we asked for water first, why are you serving the people around us...I never felt so disrespected as a customer. The Laksa (yes, odd that this place serves Laksa) is surprisingly good - the broth base is strong and spicy. 3. The highlight is their "Xiao Long Bao" - quite simply, I was blown away! Skin is very thin, soup is light, clear, flavorful, more than 1 Asian soup-spoon's worth of soup... and not merely "liquified fat" that most places pass off as "soup." For context, I worked in Taiwan and I've been to at least 8 Din Tai Fung restaurants (DTF) around the world. The "Xiao Long Bao" at Shang Dumpling rivals DTF's best location (their original location). "Xiao Long Baos" are known as soup-buns for a reason. I came here with a group of friends last night. I was blown away by how fresh and flavorful the food was. The menu is large, but we went for some of the most popular items. The highlight me was the shrimp toast - packed with fresh shrimp inside, perfectly crispy with sesame on the outside, super tasty. Hand down, they have the best XLB I've had in the Bay Area, piping hot and incredibly juicy. Equally delicious were truffle and crab versions. I eat them from an Asian soup spoon and the bowl of the spoon is not big enough to contain all the precious soup inside each one. I like them better than Ding Tai Fung. I came alone, on the recommendation of a Shanghai native, who's an XLB snob, and he's right that these are great. We have here some disrespectful employee that force customers to pay for tips. First of all, they all speak Cantonese and Mandarin. This cashier/server lady Teresa is being highly rude to my friend and have her order all messed up. Teresa is giving us other people order intended to charge my friend extra. I did confront her in Cantonese and she did not like it. In my opinion, this restaurant need a highly redo with all the employee and how they serve their customer. TL;DR: The overall experience at Shang Dumpling was sub-par, however the food was great. Food: 8/10: The pork XLB was one of the best I've had with a ton of soup and good flavor. The pan fried buns had a satisfying pan fried bottom and good amount of soup too. I can't speak for the other dishes though. There was no wait on a Thursday night, so we waltzed right in. An experienced waiter warned us that the XLB and pan-fried pork buns take longer, so we ordered those immediately before settling on green onion pancakes, shrimp toast, spicy wontons, and Mongolian beef. Our dumplings arrived 25 minutes later and were delicious--the XLB was flavorful and packed with soup. However, after another 30 minutes of waiting for the rest, we realized the second waiter never submitted our order. When they finally admitted the mistake, the server offered only a half-hearted apology. What should have been a quick date night turned into a frustrating ordeal. The best soup dumplings I've had in the Bay! As they're in their soft opening, some dishes take extra time but the wait is well worth it. My favorites included: * The classic Shanghai soup dumplings. The wrapper was the perfect not too thin or thick, and doesn't fall apart when you pick it up. Packed full of meat and soup. A must try! * The beef potstickers. Have a unique sweetness I was surprised by. On its own may be a bit too sweet, but comes with a spicy savory sauce that really balances out the sweetness and makes for a complex and delicious flavor * Baked bbq pork buns. These take some time to bake, and come piping hot (careful not to burn your tongue!) crisp on top, not too bready, and filling is on point. To top it all off the wait staff were super kind and welcoming. It's clear they're proud of their food and are thrilled when customers feel the same. Can't wait to visit again! read more
