I have repeatedly eaten at almost all of the popular dim sum restaurants in the city and down the peninsula. HL Peninsula consistently sticks out as being the outright best in terms of quality and authenticity while being well balanced on price. Both the classics and innovative dishes are executed well. Delicate dishes are light and airy and fried dishes just have that right touch of oil. Everything seems to be house-made. Generally, other dim sum restaurants have their peaks and valleys in terms of quality, but the baseline at HL Peninsula is quite high. The service is fast and attentive. Food: (3 star)We ordered the king crab ahead of time and had it prepared three different ways. The legs were steamed with garlic and cooked just right, fresh and flavorful. The body was fried with garlic, with a crispy batter while the crab meat inside remained juicy. The steamed crab head with egg was salty and not very good. The fried pork (咕嚕肉) was soggy and stuck together. The pea shoots were tender but quite oily. The abalone with chives was good, and the steamed fish was fresh and cooked just right. Service: (1 star) We sat down for about 30 minutes and no one came into our room. We eventually went downstairs to let them know that we were waiting, but even after we notified them, they still did not send a server to attend to our room. They simply told us that someone was already upstairs. We waited even longer and still could not find anyone upstairs. There was also a party singing karaoke next door, which was extremely loud. To make things worse, we were told the remote control was broken, so the TV in our room could not be turned on. Overall, it was definitely not the place to host a dinner. I ate here once before and the food was really good. I took my parents (who rarely go out to restaurants) here for a late Father's Day dinner and the experience was awful. We went on a weeknight and just instantly felt unwelcomed. Took awhile for someone to notice my party of 3 to get seated. There were a few of small parties, a few large ones, and a large private room that was full. Seems like the staff and kitchens main priority was the private room. I get it, but why even be open to seat tables if you're not going to care to take our order and serve us in a timely manner?? We ordered 3 dishes and it took almost an hour to get ONE. One of their servers almost bumped into me and just seemed so impatient and didn't even say sorry and just forced herself in front of me after it happened. HL Peninsula is easily my favorite dim sum chain in the Bay, but this location wasn't quite as good as Milpitas. I felt there was definitely less wok hay in the dishes compared to the Milpitas location. We arrived around 11 AM and had to wait about an hour, so I'd recommend either coming right when they open or being prepared for a long wait. I also noticed a few regulars who were friendly with the staff getting priority seating over the waitlist. On the bright side, if you get lucky enough to sit by the window, there are awesome views of the planes landing! Unfortunately, those are mostly larger tables and our group of 4 didn't get one. The reason to come here is the dim sum. Whenever I'm in town, my friend (who is a local and is Chinese) takes me here because she says it's still the best dim sum around. I would agree. The ambiance is consistent - it's open, decorations and decor a bit dated but very on point for what you would think. Plenty of parking. We came on a weekday for lunch straight from the airport and were seated right away. By the time we left it was much more crowded. Food comments: shrimp dumplings excellent, beef balls delicious as exactly they should be, black bean ribs really good and bigger portion than you get at most places, the Chinese broccoli was good, bean curd skin with broth was tasty, beef tripe was what my friend was craving and it was fine (I hadn't had it in a while), and we tried something new - the clams which were very spicy and in a wine sauce which still had very much an alcoholic taste to them (I wouldn't get that again, but all else I would). The salted egg told lava black buns are her favorite for dessert and they were delicious. For all the food we got, we had plenty of leftovers and the bill was very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food. The biggest issue here is the service. It's curt at best and you really have to stay on them to be responsive. My friend is fluent so it was no issue for us, but I would imagine if you weren't your service experience might be a bit more difficult. They do include a 16% service charge (it's a you're served by everyone situation vs. one server) and there is no extra space for tip...we left a little extra to support the business, but do appreciate that no further tip seems to be expected. I have to say the view of the water is astounding. I like the view a lot. I would say this is one of the best dim sum restaurants I had in a long time. I usually stick to the South Bay Area for dim sum and wouldn't go anywhere outside of it. Service is good. I was able to get the jelly pig dessert dish and it was so fun to see it jiggly. I found parking right away and they seated us almost immediately close to the Bay view windows. It was super busy with people waiting outside and inside was loud and lively (just how you want a dim sim place to be)! Inside is pretty nice and the view is honestly worth it. We ordered the dim sum classics: siu mai, ha gow, rice rolls, chicken feet, ma lai go, beef balls, salted egg yolk lava buns. Everything was honestly solid and portions were bigger than I expected. The dim sum menu is also pretty vast, but some classic dishes have different names so always ask the server. We also got some Chinese herb and fermented rice wine soup.....so good and a lot of chicken in it. Total for our party of 4 came out to be $105 (including their 16% service charge). Honestly not bad at all for the food we got (not all pictured), the fast service, and great views. This might be my new dim sum spot on the Peninsula! Came here for dinner. Maybe they are better for dim sum/lunch, but I was not impressed with the food at dinner. The menu was actually quite small - for example, very few rice or noodle dishes which was surprising given these are staples at many Chinese restaurants, and the dishes that were listed were expensive. I also found the menu difficult to navigate since a portion was in Chinese. One fish dish we ordered said $36 but then when the bill came it was almost $80 - the waitress then said it was $36 per pound but I don't think this was clearly explained on the menu, or if it was, it was in Chinese. Anyway, the fish was definitely not worth $80. Overall the dishes were average taste-wise and service was not very attentive. Ive been to other HL locations but have not tried this one yet. The space is decent with large windows and a running path outside, which makes it perfect for a morning run followed by dim sum and tea. I came with family and was not planning to eat much, but ended up trying a few things. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Monday morning. Hostess greeted customers with attitude and was completely unprofessional. The unfair treatment in seating guests was obvious, and they seem totally okay with disregarding guests like that. Unfortunately bad service seems to be a consistent issue at HL locations. We were placed at a table that was far too small for our large group. Even the dim sum lady questioned why we didnt have a bigger table, which made the whole setup feel poorly managed. Some of the cups and plates were dirty and had to be sent back, which is frustrating because clean serveware feels like a very basic priority for a restaurant. Sitting by the window is also quite chilly, but you do get a nice view of the water and planes taking off from sfo. I enjoyed the purple fried shrimp rolls and skip anything with the salted egg yolk batter. The menu had unique items that I havent seen at other places, including wine chicken which is hard to find at home. I enjoyed the variety and seeing new dishes beyond the usual dim sum classics, even though I didnt get to try everything. Kind of disappointed of the food quality that it dropped since my last visit. Came with a group of friends on a Sunday lunch. We decided to come here because we had good experiences previously, but this time was a super disappointed experience for all of us. First of all, food quality. The colored shrimp dumplings were ugly and not appealing at all. Used way too much artificial coloring. See the photo for more details and it was $10, and not tasty. Not worth the price. We also ordered another veggie dumplings and the wrap (outside part) was super bland and mushy. Very disappointed. The cilantro rice roll was lack of flavor, too thick and bland. One of the go-to dim sum spots in the Bay Area with classic Cantonese dishes and great for family meals! Food was plated beautifully and was hot and fresh. My favorite was the oysters - tender flesh, not fishy at all, paired well with the sauce and green onions. I also really liked the dumplings covered with pumpkin puree sauce as it was such a unique combination of sweetness and savory that wasn't too overpowering on either flavor. My family and I went on a Monday afternoon and got seated fairly quickly. They are very efficient with seating. I went to lunch with colleagues hoping HL Peninsula Pearl would fulfill my desire for tasty dim sum and my experience was mixed. The venue is gorgeous (5/5; high ceilings, chandeliers, amazing views of SFO), the service was mediocre (3/5; our order was taken quickly after we completed writing it. We had to keep asking for things such as knives and bowls but we were accommodated and ultimately one of the dishes they brought out was incorrect despite me telling them they put it in their system wrong...now for the food. We went a bit wild and ordered the following (let's just say we had tons left over): -steamed surf clam w/ vermiccelli in galic sauce (3.5/5; clams tasted decent but I didn't love the texture. clams paired well with noodles and sauce -duo egg fried rice (4/5; my group enjoyed this dish. Large portion) -signature fried rice noodles (4.25/5; good portion and lots of seafood/meat. flavor was good but nothing amazing and quite a good value.) Note, we didn't order this dish but it was beside the dish we ordered on the list/menu and they didn't/couldn't change the order despite letting them know within minutes... -chicken feet in herbal broth (3.75/5; the chicken feet were cooked well and the broth was nice but I was expecting pan fried chicken feet, which i would have preferred. First off, don't get confused with peninsula garden next door. Very similar names, but different restaurants. I've come here for dim sum and banquet dinner, the dim sum is a better experience. I like how this place can accommodate large parties. The service is ok and seems used to serving large groups. DIM SUM- all is good. We ordered everything and anything you could think of and all the food was good. I wouldn't say spectacular but definitely good. We ordered lava buns towards the end of our meal and it took an hour to come out. I don't think it was worth waiting for them, but if you want them just order early. BANQUET- we got a set seafood menu, but I think a la carte could have been better. We added on chow mein and fried rice since it only came with e fu noodles. It was strange, the cold cuts came out last. There weren't many standouts- maybe the steamed flounder? The other table we were with ordered a la carte dishes and their food looked great. Over ordering fresh food can break a restaurant's bottom line. I tend to agree with the cook staff that running out of ingredients is better than over buying and not getting enough orders. Since the restaurant is a very large square footage, it probably costs a lot in rent, plus you have to pay the premium for the chefs to keep them on board. I'm from Los Angeles, and restaurants go in and out of business in the 626 area all of the time, so I know how hard it must be to keep up the quality and quantity of food balanced with the total cost of running the restaurant. You need to keep an open perspective on these things. The food quality of our dishes was excellent, we enjoyed the meal thoroughly and didn't have much leftovers to take home. I came here for Tuesday dinner around 6 pm and was able to get seated promptly for my party of 3. I wanted a table by the window, but they were all reserved for large 10 person parties. The standard menu is two pages, and there's also an additional printed menu + receipt with what I assume are the seasonal/daily dishes. It took us forever to decide what to order as some of the dishes we typically order aren't on the menu here. We ordered 4 dishes for the 3 of us as I wanted to try more dishes and have plenty of leftovers for the rest of the week. We tried (* marks my favorites): Dried oyster, roast pork, and seafood clay pot ($28) * House famous abalone, fresh crab meat, and silky tofu ($46) * Sauteed dice beef tenderloin ($24) Custom chicken noodle dish ($24) The abalone and crab meat clay pot felt very luxurious with fish maw, giant scallops, and abalone. I really liked the sauce as well for this clay pot. The other clay pot we ordered with oyster and roast pork felt a bit repetitive with the abalone clay pot as the both flavors were on the lighter side and both seafood based, but it was good. The beef was very flavorful. The leftovers tasted amazing over rice. I only ate a couple bites of the chicken noodle dish, but I thought it was solid as well. We ended dinner with complimentary black sesame paste, which was SO good. I was pleasantly surprised that the restaurant served this instead of the standard sweet red bean soup. We had a feast of cucumber and black fungus appetizers, Maine lobster on a bed of longevity egg noodles (ee mein), sticky rice with chicken (the sticky rice could be stickier), honey walnuts with prawns, steamed copper rock cod in a clay pot, pea sprouts with enoki mushrooms, tofu with tender greens, house soup, a delicious whole suckling pig that had crispy skin and red eyes that lit up! Impressive dish! The dinner was topped off with red bean soup and the longevity buns with red bean paste inside! The presentation was phenomenal. We sat by the windows that overlooked the water. At a distance, we could see the planes lining up and preparing to take off at SF airport. On the other side of the room was a huge TV screen where people could watch the FIFA World Cup. Luckily there was a walking trail by the peninsula that you are able to walk on and kill time. It's not your typical cart dim sum- They provide a menu and you put the quantity of each item you would like. They have a lot of items! We got the typical dim sum choices, Har Gow, Siu Mai, Chinese Broccoli, Beef Chow Fun, Soup Dumplings, and their huge sesame balls! We also tried their tripe and chicken feet which was good. They didn't have the deep fried shrimp ball which is what we usually like to add-on. They also don't put the chili oil on the table so we had to keep asking for more and the servers looked a bit annoyed we kept asking... sorry, we enjoy chili oil lol. And it wasn't even chili oil, it was more of a chili paste that they have. I enjoyed the food. You also get a nice view of the peninsula and you get to see the planes from SFO take off. I came here on a Saturday around 11:30am for a lunch wedding banquet. So my experience will differ from the usual dim sum or dinner patron. Parking was easy enough. If it gets crowded you can drop off people at the entrance and park in a spot farther away. Maybe closer to their HL Peninsula Garden location since the two lots connect. We had a private room with ocean/airplane views. They let you serve your own tea and wine if desired. I really enjoyed the wedding banquet food. (I think we had banquet menu B.) It was a bit slow starting out and the food didn't come out in the exact order listed. There was a bit of a wait between the petite four starters and the rest of the food. Maybe it was intentional to allow time for people arriving late. Standouts were the Chilean sea bass and the suckling pig. There were a lot of dishes with seafood. Me and my family came last Sunday morning during their opening hours. After 30 mins or so, the place started to get packed up! Arrive early to get a seat. I've been to plenty of dim sum restaurants and they each have their own type of way of doing things. I noticed there weren't that many employees on the floor to do refills, calls, orders, etc. There were more of those servers than there were 'Leads' if that's what they call it. It took some time to get some of our requests done. We ordered the typical spread: Siu Mai, pork ribs in black bean sauce, soy sauce chow mein, shrimp and pork chive dumplings, shrimp noodle rolls, and baked bbq buns. Each were all pretty good in taste and portion size. I truly didn't think anything was special or out of the ordinary; they were all pretty simple. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our meal and had a nice time looking at the ocean view and sightseeing around the restaurant. They don't automatically give soy sauce and chili oil so make sure to request these. Their chili oil wasn't my favorite type, but it'll do. They also don't have hot mustard which is a bummer. I would like to say though, their high-chairs for toddlers are awesome! It's literally a mini chair seat with a sturdy buckle; It's comfy and awesome. Overall, this dim sum restaurant is a good one and pretty fancy I should say. It's not my favorite restaurant for dim sum but it's worth coming to especially this particular ocean view location. read more

They were able to accommodate our table of ten relatively quickly. The menu has some pretty solid staples. The location seems a bit run down or perhaps it was more noticeable on a sleepy mid week evening. The service was quick and friendly. They offer plenty of parking in their lot. They views of the bay are amazing and the kids loved to run along side the water after dinner. read more
