Fish With You is a bright, casual eatery specializing in Sichuan-style suancai fish, a soup of sliced snakehead fish flavored with preserved vegetables, whole dried red chilies, and Sichuan peppercorns. The Signature Suancai & Fish also came with tofu, woodear mushrooms, celtuce, and thick, chewy, translucent sweet potato noodles, all in a hot, spicy and sour broth, topped with chili oil and sesame seeds. For an appetizer, we had the Fried Pork Sausage, served with a side of ketchup. The food here was decent though nothing too outstanding. However, everything came at a fair value, and the service was friendly too!

Fish With You gives fulfilling and satisfying portions of their noodles! The service was very excellent and the food came out in no time. The restaurant layout is simple and very clean. Highly recommend for a quick bite while exploring San Mateo!

Cozy, affordable spot in downtown San Mateo for hearty Sichuan-style suancai fish soups with generous portions and fast, no-frills service. Went midweek for lunch and the restaurant was nearly empty, which made for a quiet, relaxed meal. The space is casual and focused on their specialty: Sichuan-style pickled mustard green (suancai) fish soups. We ordered three small-sized soups for a party of three and found the portions very generous for individual servings. Each soup comes with a bowl of rice, making it a very filling and satisfying meal. * Signature suancai & fish with snakehead * Green Sichuan suancai & fish with basa, sweet potato noodle, and fungus * Classic with basa, enoki, and tofu For the price point, it feels like one of the best value suancai fish options in the Bay Area. Service was fast and efficient; our soups came out in a reasonable amount of time and staff checked in enough without hovering. However, if you do not speak Chinese, it may be harder to ask detailed questions about the menu, so it helps to come with an idea of what you want or be ready to point to items. The restaurant is in downtown San Mateo, so plan a bit of extra time for parking before your meal. There is metered street parking nearby as well as a parking structure at the opposite corner of the block, both within easy walking distance. This is a great spot if you are craving sauerkraut-style Sichuan fish soup with generous toppings at a very reasonable price. Would definitely return to try more of their fish soup variations and customize different toppings.

Signature Suancai & Fish, Large (9/10): So tasty, and a good portion for 2 people!

Fish With You has a great combo: it's fun and it's delicious! First, the delicious. Their menu focuses on sūancài yú (酸菜魚), or Sichuan fish soup with picked mustard greens. (They call it sauerkraut on the menu, I think to help explain it to English-speakers, but it's not the German kind of sauerkraut). Their signature soup is a spicy, sour, and hearty dish that has a fantastic mix of fish, tofu, vegetables (fresh and pickled), and glass noodles, and it comes with rice on the side. We get the large, which is a good size for two people to share, and it always has plenty of (good-sized) chunks of the snakehead fish. Besides the soup, we also often get their pork sausage side (from the Yummy Snacks menu). The sausage is thick and snappy, and it has what seem to be pineapple chunks mixed in that counterbalance the meat well. Also, the name is based on a pun in Chinese: 魚你在一起 / 鱼你在一起 (yú nǐ zài yīqǐ, "fish with you") sounds like 與你在一起 / 与你在一起 (yǔ nǐ zài yīqǐ, "together with you"). It's cute, and it matches the shared soup vibes!

Came here for a casual dinner and left with scorched taste buds and a weird craving for Spaghettios. We tried two broths with snakehead fish -- signature and tomato. The signature broth hits hard. Pickled vegetables add a nice tang, but the spice level is no joke. The snakehead fish was tender and flavorful, but if you're sensitive to heat, skip sipping the soup and just eat what's in it. Trust me. The tomato broth was a welcome cooldown. Milder, comforting, but also kind of artificial -- like someone used a can of Spaghettios and called it a day. Not terrible, just oddly familiar. Ordering is efficient -- scan the QR code at your table, punch in your choices, and the food shows up fast.

The signature suan cai yu was absolutely delicious! Perfectly cooked fish with no bones. Appetizing pickled veggies with chewy glass noodles! Addicting comforting broth with a hint of spice and perfect amount of sourness to keep you coming back for more. The small order was perfect to share between 2 people. We ordered via QR code on the table and food came very quickly. Ambiance is clean and bright inside. Pretty busy on a Saturday evening. Definitely will be back again!

Chinese style szechuan fish pot! Was so excited for this to open up as I love this style of fish pot soup. You choose what size / base flavor / fish you want, and also some "side dishes", which are more things added to the soup. We went with the suancai flavor as we love a sour and spicy, and got the large size. The pot that comes out looks large, but the base is actually deceptive and it's a very doable amount for 2. The large also comes with 2 bowls of rice. I think the pot would be good enough to feed 2 people of moderate appetite, but there weren't any leftovers for us and I do wish there was so more fish and side dishes in the broth, but the flavor was excellent! The location is very convenient right in downtown San Mateo, and the space is small but food comes out quickly. Casual vibes, good for friends or family. You order on your phone and service is quick and friendly. Overall, a great spot to hit up if you're craving some good Chinese fish pot!

Tried this spot for the first time and I'm glad I finally did. They've got a huge variety of fish soups, which is such a refreshing change from the usual. We went with the lemon fish -- super unique and honestly, surprisingly delicious. Definitely a standout. If I had one wish, it would be for a bigger space. The front table we sat at was right by the door, which felt a little awkward. Service could've been better too, but it wasn't a dealbreaker. Overall, I'd absolutely come back just for the fish -- ideally at a more comfortable table next time. This is the kind of place you enjoy best with your besties... maybe not a first-date spot.

Great Suan Cai Yu, portion is really big, great for sharing. Service is quick and friendly. The store is new and cozy.

I was so excited when I saw this new restaurant open in downtown San Mateo. If you've ever had really good suancai fish in Asia, you know how addictive it is. It's the kind of dish you find yourself craving again and again. So when I saw a Chinese chain that specializes in suancai fish, I figured this had to be good. My husband and I decided to try it out last night. We arrived around 7pm on a Wednesday, and only three tables were occupied. That raised a small orange flag, but we went ahead and ordered the large signature suancai fish. The dish came out fast and it was very hot, mostly because of the thick layer of oil on top. Unfortunately, that ended up being the only highlight. The broth was extremely watered down, with barely any spice or sourness. I kept hoping the flavor would develop, but it just never did. Hubby also ordered the pork chops. The moment they hit the table, I could tell they weren't fresh. They looked oily, dull, and definitely not crispy. It seemed like they had just re-fried some old pork chops. Don't order it as they were greasy and tasteless. Honestly, I expected more from a place that claims to have over 2,000 locations worldwide. The broth felt like they took one great bowl of suancai fish and stretched it into five bowls of something barely recognizable. Really disappointing. That said, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the service was genuinely good. I'm giving one star for the food and adding another star for the service. I hope they improve the food, especially the broth, because they have great potential to be something special. But for now, we won't be going back and I wouldn't recommend it in its current state. One star for food and one star for the friendly service.

Food portion is huge. I ordered one fish dish and one pork. The fish is tasty and the pork is ok.

Very affordable and authentic Chinese food option in San Mateo. Loved the fish, perfectly feeds 2 people, a lot of ingredients, though it could be better if the fish is more fresh (but can't complain with the price!) The store is clean, service was great.

I guess you can get it without nuts as for example the roasted chili spice mixture was in a separate small pot next to the soup bowl.

Water refills were easy to flag down. The cucumber salad was a huge portion and so refreshing. We wish the cold potato salad was a bit softer (it was crunchy). We didn't find anything too spicy. For the skewers, everything was juicy and well-seasoned. The flavoring was great. My personal favorites were the beef and lamb sticks which were tender. We also tried items like gristle, gizzard, and gluten (yum!) We ended up spending a little over $30 per person after tax and tip. Overall, this was a fun group meal and I'm glad it was a good introduction for my friends who hadn't tried this style of skewers before. I'd recommend it!

From the first visit, it was clear this isn't an "Americanized Chinese restaurant," but a place that truly understands Chinese cooking, technique, and flavor. What impressed me most were the mushroom dishes. Being able to enjoy mushrooms with such depth and complexity in the U.S. is already rare. The aroma isn't built from heavy seasoning, but from the ingredients themselves, fully brought out. The flavors are clean, natural, and incredibly fragrant--the kind that lingers and keeps you wanting more. It immediately brought back memories of authentic Yunnan flavors. Even more impressive were some of the seemingly ordinary stir-fried dishes. At first glance, they look simple, almost unassuming. One bite in, though, and you instantly understand what real wok hei is. That smoky, high-heat flavor can only come from a skilled chef using proper equipment and precise timing.
