Single order comes with one bowl of rice. Two person order comes with 2 bowls of rice. We ordered the two person order of Laotan Suancai & Snakehead Fish. Man this is a huge portion!! I would tell you to order it for a table of 4 and then order a few other dishes like their fried chicken or roast duck along with a couple extra bowls of rice. Super tender thin sliced fish. Sliced cabbage and mushrooms cooked perfectly. Nice amount of spice and peppercorn heat. Definitely you get the numbing flavors. Note this dish is "one pepper chili scale". And it's pretty spicy. We initially thought to try a "two pepper" dish and asked if spice level can be reduced. She said the broth already is prepared and watering down will not taste good or make much difference. All in all an excellent healthy meal with enough leftovers for one more meal. Place was empty when we arrived around 1pm Saturday. I guess lunch seating just left but by the time we were half way thru our meal the place was half full. Staff was quick to take our order but didn't offer a lot of customer greetings or assistance. Delicious and I can't wait to go back! Had the golden with the standard fish and it was like a hot and sour soup with light buttery flakey fish. I was tempted to get the large (it comes with 4 sides instead of 2) but glad I got the she side the portion was big! I took the rest home to add noodles and tofu to make another meal. Fish With You has a great combo: it's fun and it's delicious! First, the delicious. Their menu focuses on sūancài yú (酸菜魚), or Sichuan fish soup with picked mustard greens. (They call it sauerkraut on the menu, I think to help explain it to English-speakers, but it's not the German kind of sauerkraut). Their signature soup is a spicy, sour, and hearty dish that has a fantastic mix of fish, tofu, vegetables (fresh and pickled), and glass noodles, and it comes with rice on the side. We get the large, which is a good size for two people to share, and it always has plenty of (good-sized) chunks of the snakehead fish. Besides the soup, we also often get their pork sausage side (from the Yummy Snacks menu). The sausage is thick and snappy, and it has what seem to be pineapple chunks mixed in that counterbalance the meat well. Also, the name is based on a pun in Chinese: 魚你在一起 / 鱼你在一起 (yú nǐ zài yīqǐ, "fish with you") sounds like 與你在一起 / 与你在一起 (yǔ nǐ zài yīqǐ, "together with you"). I was so excited when I saw this new restaurant open in downtown San Mateo. If you've ever had really good suancai fish in Asia, you know how addictive it is. It's the kind of dish you find yourself craving again and again. So when I saw a Chinese chain that specializes in suancai fish, I figured this had to be good. My husband and I decided to try it out last night. We arrived around 7pm on a Wednesday, and only three tables were occupied. That raised a small orange flag, but we went ahead and ordered the large signature suancai fish. The dish came out fast and it was very hot, mostly because of the thick layer of oil on top. Unfortunately, that ended up being the only highlight. The broth was extremely watered down, with barely any spice or sourness. I kept hoping the flavor would develop, but it just never did. Hubby also ordered the pork chops. The moment they hit the table, I could tell they weren't fresh. They looked oily, dull, and definitely not crispy. It seemed like they had just re-fried some old pork chops. Don't order it as they were greasy and tasteless. Honestly, I expected more from a place that claims to have over 2,000 locations worldwide. The broth felt like they took one great bowl of suancai fish and stretched it into five bowls of something barely recognizable. Really disappointing. That said, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the service was genuinely good. I'm giving one star for the food and adding another star for the service. I hope they improve the food, especially the broth, because they have great potential to be something special. But for now, we won't be going back and I wouldn't recommend it in its current state. We added wood ear mushroom and lotus root. I liked the basa fish but wish there was a bit more in the dish. This is a no frills place, staff is helpful if you need anything.
