Kusan surprised me with some pretty authentic Uyghur food. Very similar flavors and food to where my family is from in the Gansu province in China. We came with a large party of 10+ people. Interior decor and space is nice, service was great. We ordered everything from lamb shank, ribs, catfish, samsa. Food is seasoning wise very accurate, but it's definitely an acquired taste. I enjoy this food, since ive had it before when visiting my family's hometown. But the flavors are very strong and catfish and lamb are mixed flavors for most. Good experience overall. Delicious and high quality food. It's a bit hidden in the back of the shopping center, but a great find. Highly recommended! The only downside was the server charged us a 20% tip/fee for our "party of 6". Which was 2 parents and 4 kids including a 6 year old. Seemed a bit steep to charge a fee for a basic family dinner especially since the service wasn't spectacular read more

My dad suggested going to Kusan for dinner. I remember watching Kusan being featured on Check Please, Bay Area! The cuisine looked appetizing, but I remember it was far away in San Jose so we never tried it. Luckily, there's now a San Mateo location! The restaurant is situated in a quiet strip mall in San Mateo not near downtown, so parking is easy. The space is not large, but sleek and modern looking inside. I was able to make an online reservation no problem through DoorDash. We were seated promptly as our table had reserved sign on it. Initially, the restaurant only had a few tables occupied when we walked in, but was completely full when we left. There was only one server for the entire restaurant, but he was very kind and did a good job in my opinion. We ordered eggplant with mashed garlic, garlic spicy and tangy cucumber salad, Wellington-style roasted lamb, Uyghur chicken wraps, beef with celery dumplings, lamb broth with handcraft mini won tons, and the lamb noodle soup. The eggplant lacked seasoning, but it was a large portion for the price. I dipped the eggplant in the leftover cucumber dressing, which was excellent! The Wellington-style roast lamb had an interesting concept, but it was mediocre in my opinion. The dumplings and noodle dishes were very fresh and tasty. My husband enjoyed his chicken wraps and my kids really liked the mango flavor yogurt beverage. It wasn't too sweet! We are new to Uyghur cuisine, but we will be back! It's a 3.5 stars for me, some dishes are a hit some dishes are a miss. We went on a weeknight and got seated immediately. We ordered: - Lamb kebab: 3/5 the meat was rough but the seasoning was good - Samsa: 5/5 flavorful and delicious! - Golden toasted lamb: 4/5 the first few bites were delicious but it's generally too fatty the more I bite into it - Garlic naan: 2/5 unfortunately it felt like store bought and wasn't that good read more

I am not usually a fan of lamb but everything we ordered was delicious. The golden lamb ribs were so tender and the side sauces and spices worked really well with it. The lamb shank was moist and fell right off of the bone. The pilaf rice had a hint of sweetness to it, reminded me of the taste of those chinese herbal soups with gogi berries. The lamb dumpling soup was my favorite dish of the night. The soup oddly tasted like pico degallo because of the onions, tomatoes, and cilantro, but it WORKED. The lamb broth was hearty but clean tasting at the same time and the dumplings were tasty. The cold eggplant dish was a little too spicy for me but was good over the rice. I didn't see their fish dish on their to-go menu so we'll have to go in-person to try that! read more

Solid Uyghur cuisine in San Mateo hidden in a shopping center beside Fitness 19. Had the crispy lamb ribs and the flavors were excellent. It was a bit of work eating it off the bones. Would probably opt for a rice or noodle dish next time to balance out the heavy fat in the the lamb. It could have been a little more crispy. She had the whole catfish with garlic. We were disappointed they didn't torch it in front of us especially for the $30 price point. The Samsa was probably the best thing we had. Garlic naan was fine but nothing special. Service was prompt and friendly and it had easy parking. This is the 4th location of this restaurant and the only one not in the South Bay. It would be good if they offered some vegetarian entrees. If you don't eat meat your options are very limited. Really nice ambiance inside. I am so pleasantly surprised by both the flavor and hospitality of this restaurant. We were just picking a new place to gather as a group, but the entire dinner turned into a discussion around how much we love the food! All the lamb was melt in your mouth delicious. The dough they use is tender yet textured, extremely satisfying for the palate. The vegetables (and I don't eat vegetables) complement all the meat really well. The yogurt and soup were both delicious sides that we kept going back to between spoons of food. We have decided to come back here very often. This has easily become a top 10 restaurant for us in the entire Bay Area. We can't wait to explore the rest of the menu! read more

The food felt simply special. Deliciousness aside, it was high quality on an exquisite level. The food was served exceptionally quickly, and the service was cooperative and helpful. I do think even with them being busy, I didn't get the sense they were trying to push us out the door when we were done. This is a cute place, lots of close tables though so not where I'd go for a quiet conversation.

There's a lack of consistency in the prep also, there were crab shells in the orange crab dish, there was a bad bitter uni in one of the chawanmushi, etc. I think the ambiance, service, and course doesn't add up to the $150 price tag. There's definitely potential but the lack of effort does affect the overall experience.
