Sad to see Morning Wood closed down in Burlingame shortly after we discovered it - very unique brunch options with a fun Hawaiian flare. Fast forward we stumbled upon Diamond Head General Store -saw the comment that it is related to Morning Wood! Set our GPS and my girls and I were on our way this past Sunday afternoon. SO GLAD WE FOUND THIS PLACE! In a small nondescript building off El Camino Real in San Bruno. Has an authentic vibe as you walk in to the store..the temperature inside also reflected the warmth. 60s outdoors but felt like upper 70s indoors. You walk into a spread of musubi and onigiris on the right side; on the left - shelves of Hawaiian spices, ingredients, snacks, and other specialty items with a row of fridges along the back wall carrying all kinds of Hawaiian and Japanese drinks and other delights. These visual delights lead you right up to the counter. IMPORTANT TO CHECK YOUR HEALTH AT THE DOOR! Not for the faint of heart or those with medical considerations. The dishes are loaded with flavor and that means a generous helping of salt and fried options. What we ordered and shared family style: CRACK fries: we LOOOOVED the CRACK fries - not only the taste but the fries stay uniquely cripsy even after rit cools a bit. 5/5 Moco Loco with Mochiko Chicken: the gravy was requested on the side - glad I opted for this as it was more saltier than I expected; drizzled a fraction of it on the rice for flavor. Generous helping of rice. The HAWAIIAN FIRE WATER (squeez bottle sitting on the table) paired AMAZINGLY with the Mochiko chicken. I enjoyed this pairing more so than the Moco Loco gravy with the rice and eggs. 4/5 CRUNCHY CHILI GARLIC CHICKEN - tasty but boy oh boy is it filling since it's batter held the oil. Comes with a side of MAC salad. A bit too rich for our bellies but no complaints on the taste. 4/5 MEAT JUN - entree available the day we came but don't see it up on the other Yelpers photos. Beef pan fried with a side of soy based dipping sauce. Comes with a side of MAC salad. 4/5 SHAVED ICE - ooh wee! This was a great end to the meal for my girls. They enjoyed the three flavors of mango, guava, ramune - a ring of sweet kazuki beans and a wooden stick of Mochis at the peak of the frozen ice. 5/5 Salmon/Avocado/Eel/Spam Musubi: 10/10 - rice was nicely seasoned and all the flavors just went together so well. Diamond Head is a good lunch spot with big portions. Mostly a to go spot but they do have seating, which is first come first serve. Overall: 4/5 Ordered the kalua pork plate and a side of fries. The fries were thick cut seasoned with furikake. Excellent crunch and good flavor but thicker cut fries are just not my preference. Kalua pork was plate was good. Very large portions with a ton of pork. Pork had good flavor and wasn't dry like kalua pork can get sometimes. Cabbage was fine and Mac salad was good, very mayo heavy. A bit too wet for my personal taste. Will definitely come back to try the other plates, and shave ice. Ok so I was kind of a hater. I didn't love morning wood or the wait. Felt it wasn't worth it so avoided this place like the plague for years. Today I saw it and was like f it, let's give it another go. Man, I was so wrong for so long. This place is legit. When you enter it feels like you're in Hawaii. Not kitschy Hawaii, local Hawaii. Then you get to the food. The garlic shrimp was excellent. Had a ton of garlic and butter. The Kalua pork was tasty and the Michiko chicken was to die for. But you know what was the best? The Poke. Man I haven't had poke this good in the mainland before. Their Hawaiian Ahi Poke had Limu/Ogo, onions, green onions and just tasted as if I was back in Oahu. Super cool spot I wouldn't have found if I wasn't browsing on Yelp. The decor and vibe instantly brought me to Hawaii. Lots of options for food from rice plates to fries to musubi and shaved ice. They even have a little grocery section for Hawaiian food and drink. Everything is on the pricier side tbh. $21 for the bbq chicken plate and a canned coconut water from the fridge for $6. Rice plates were delicious and steaming hot made to order. Mac salad was creamy. Didn't like the tako fries really. Too fried and crunchy and loaded with sauce. Super heavy compared to the light and freshness of the rice plates. Overall I had a wonderful time here, and would likely come again. But be prepared to spend a little more than usual. read more

My daughter and I stopped in as we were in the side of the bay and I'm so glad we did. We were able to share a Hamburger Steak plate and a Shrimp Masubi. We were so full. We couldn't even finish the rice and Mac salad. Everything was delicious. So much I will gladly drive over from Hayward again. My daughter is looking forward to taking her BF as he stays close by. The Serb is was super friendly. Service was fast. The establishment is well kept. Restroom was very clean. Only thing I wish they had was a separate register for those buying grab and go items. Only because the lady behind me was on my neck and looking around me like that was going to speed things up. When pulling up, it's right after the smog shop. Yum! We live just a few blocks away and had never been here because the hours are difficult to make with our jobs, but we finally made it! The menu consists of the typical Hawaiian fare - poke, loco moco, spam masubis, shaved ice, etc. we ordered a loco moco and the ahi tuna poke. FYI the poke is all market price only. This is the first time I've tried this place since it converted from Morning Wood and it was a pleasant experience! When you walk in, there are different types of musubis for grab and go. There was a line of maybe 3-4 people which didn't take too long. I ordered 2 mochiko chicken plates and one furikake mahi. The chicken dishes came out pretty quickly, but for some reason the employee got the right name on 1 plate and put "Stephanie" on the other plate - so I was standing there for maybe 20 minutes before I followed up with them and got it sorted out. The dishes were very generous in portion. I was able to share my single plate with my mom and still feel full. This is definitely more of a take out restaurant. There are a handful of tables but on a weekend, expect the tables to be taken. Their parking lot has also always been small, so I had to park on the street - ECR, but it wasn't difficult at all to find street parking on the weekend I went. I did enjoy the grocery section - I was able to buy some furikake and mirin powder. Maybe a little pricier than groceries but really good for convenience. Overall, I had a pleasant first experience and the food was really tasty. I love this Hawaiian general store/restaurant. My friend and I arrived early so we had a choice of tables but the tables filled up fairly quickly. They have a good menu selection, portions are very generous. Food is served in takeaway containers because there is no way you can eat the whole thing in one sitting unless you are sharing. We ordered her two favorites: two Fried Mochiko Chicken plate and Crunchy Chili Garlic chicken plate (to take home). The mochiko chicken had a super crunchy coating, making for some of the best fried chicken. The chili pepper water condiment (which is also hella ono with kalua pig), adds more flavor than heat. The mac salad was delish but the rice was disappointing, it was super mushy toward the center of the scoops. I shared the crunchy chili garlic chicken plate at home with my hubby. It was still crunchy even after a ferry boat ride home! It was on the spicy side, some bites seemed spicier than others. If you are in a super grab 'n' go mood, they have musubi, onigri and inari with various fillings. Vegetarian or vegan? Forget it, lol, unless all you want is shave ice. The general store side is well curated with items from the Islands, some of which you might find elsewhere, but they have what you need in one spot HERE. There is a cold case with beverages. I was told the owner sometimes has house baked goods. The guava cake is my friend's weakness, unfortunately they did not have any the day we were there. You can tell the chef is from Hawaii his food tastes local.... Yes that's a thing... His poke is traditional, it's simple and tasty, no fancy unique ingredients just old school fresh fish. His Ogo is fresh and his sauce has a balanced umami flavor with a hint of sweet. Reminds me of taniokas shoyu poke. We got the Meat Jun, Kalua Pig and Cabbage, Poke Bowl, and Locco Moco. His plates are HUGE! I can grine and had couldn't finish. You know you getting one big plate when the clam shell struggles to stay closed. Meat Jun was very good, egg cooked perfectly and was tight to the beef, which was fork tender, meat Jun sauce was spot on but even without sauce the Meat Jun stood on its own and Was seasoned well. The Pole Bowl had two layers, the poke is separated from the rice in a two compartment bowl which kept the rice from getting soggy. The poke "level" had more that a half pound of fish alone and the fixings pushed it over one pound easily. Rice was covered with this Ono furikake and was a very generous portion, the hamburger steak on the loco Moco took up most of the clam shell and was a hand made patty that was swinging this silky brown gravy that tied everything together. The Kalua Pig was also Ono and one would struggle to finish it on your own. I had a slam and Pocho Musubi and that combo gave me flash backs to Manapua man days. If you are looking for home kine plate lunch this is the place. I might even try and buy the poke by the pound.. forgot to mention I got some butter mochi for dessert haven't tried it yet because I was too stuffed from my plate lunch. Service was friendly and fast. The spot feels like a small general store back I. Hawaii where you get your goodies up front and order plate lunches from the back. If you're craving for something sweet, they also have shaved ice, you can put whatever toppings you like mochi, condensed milk, flavored syrups, and more. You can take your food togo or dine in since they have about ten tables. They take apple pay or cash which is very convenient for everyone. 5 stars for food -2 for horrible, awful service This one was REALLY hard to review because the food was AMAZING but the service was HORRIBLE!!! DHGS had been on my bucket list forever. Finally decided to go on a mid-week late afternoon (around 3pm-ish). It was small and we had to park on the street, but that was fine. When we walked in, it was a smaller space with tables and lots of Hawaiian goodies to purchase. They make their own bagged goods along with seeking Hawaiian treats and staples. Prices were all moderate to on the higher side. But I immediately thought, this would be a perfect place to buy Hawaiian snacks. They also have house ready to go Musubis (that were delicious)! The menu offers local selections along with shave ice. Prices are on the higher side but I was expecting that the portions were going to be bigger than normal (which ended up being correct). Then I went to order and all of the expectations of this being my new go-to Hawaiian restaurant were dashed. There were three people behind the counter- a middle aged Asian guy and 2 late teen/young adult Asian females. Not one said hello. Not one stopped their conversation to help us. So we stood there kind of shocked- when the cashier girl finally did turn around she just stood there and started at us. That was the queue to tell her what we wanted. I asked her a question about drinks, and she gave me a disgusted look and pointed to the fridge along the wall with canned and bottled drinks. I told her no thanks and she never looked up again. Didn't say another word. Now I usually give anyone in food service a lot of grace, but we were the only ones waiting to order and the restaurant was not busy in ANY sense. But what surprised me was the guy didn't make any effort to say anything either... when we picked up our food again- no words. Just put the food on the counter and walked away. At that point I had already made up my mind that I worked NEVER come here again. But since my daughter and I were starving (hadn't eaten all day) we decided to sit down and eat there before we left. O. M. G. The food was DELICIOUS!!! We had literally just flown in from visiting Hawaii and go often- the Loco Moco is one of the best I've ever had. The portion size was HUGE and the flavors/quality are unmatched with anything I've had on the mainland to date. The Mochiko chicken was also huge portions and so, so good. We also had a spam/eel/avocado mission that was amazing. So it worked have been a a 4.5-5 stars for the food, but became a 3 for the service. Will I be back? Service: workers were friendly and nice Ambiance: It's part mini market with Japanese/Hawaiian goods and sit down restaurant. "Luau" Katsu Curry $23 (4/5): The portions were HUGE. 2 layers of chicken, 2 scoops of rice with tons of topped pickles, and a scoop of mac salad. The chicken was crispy and juicy. Japanese curry was good. Rice however was mushy, and the mac salad lacked texture (-1 star). In terms of value, this could really feed 3 people if you throw in an extra rice and more Mac salad. Waited around 10 minutes to place our order and another 15 minutes for our food, overall pretty good given how busy it was. Everything is wrapped in take out containers which was great since portion sizes are quite large, utensil and napkins we grabbed at the registar. There is a very small private lot with a few spaces for parking, otherwise, street parking only. Inside if you're planning on ordering local kine grindz and dining in there are table seating available to your left. Immediately ahead are shelves stocked with grocery and snack items. To the right would be the order counter and register. They also have a small counter filled with a variety of spam musubi options. Since we had already eaten lunch I just picked up an order of shave ice. It doesn't look appealing in a to go cup but the taste is still amazing and delicious. LoL! They have every tasty Hawaiian thing you could want here - massive portions of hearty favorites like Loco Moco, Mochiko Chicken, Katsu Curry, Garlic Shrimp, etc. But also lots of togo items such as numerous types of Spam Musubi, Onigiri, Inari, Kimbap, and Mochi. And of course as a general store, lots of hard to find Asian and Hawaiian grocery items, including frozen meals from Zippys! Also can't forget their Hawaiian shaved ice with countless flavor options. Finally got a chance to try this place out with a couple of gfs after church. We ordered the mochiko chicken plate and an egg salad sandwich to share. The plate portion was huge and a perfect amount to share. The place was popping and we finally got a table to sit down at. It's a counter service so there isn't too much service. Mochiko chicken 4/5: This was really good and the only reason it didn't get 5/5 is cuz my friend from Hawaii used to make this for us and hers was lightly tossed in teriyaki sauce which made it over the top. This was good stuff though and definitely worth the price! Egg salad sandwich 5/5: Okay, you're wondering why so high for an egg salad sandwich? The sandwich was served on a toasted butter brioche bun. Not too shabby right? The egg salad was good, but the kicker that put it over the top? A perfect soft yolk so when you slice it, it is slightly runny but manages to keep its shape. Amazing! That is so hard to perfect! I was super impressed. I love me some Morning Wood takeout. For those who don't know, this used to be the original dine-in location for Morning Wood, a small Hawaiian brunch joint that did big boi plates of delicious Hawaiian Asian fusion: https://www.yelp.com/biz/morning-wood-san-bruno-7 (owners Chad and Monica Kaneshiro later on moved to a different location in San Mateo, closed again, created an intimate and upscale Japanese comfort food restaurant in Burlingame to close within the year, and have since been operating silently within their OG spot). They've now pivoted into Morning Wood: the Hawaiian grocer and takeout edition. Are they as good as before? Yes, though I think the crack potatoes aren't hitting as well as their previous version. You can still dine-in here, but you're eating in the takeout containers. There's a few tables that are comfortable enough to relax and have a quick bite. There is technically parking out front, but only for a few cars; street or residential parking isn't that bad. Their most popular and consistent plate is the loco moco. Get any protein you like; they're all good, though the meatloaf patty and mochiko chicken are iconic. You'll also need to share a plate between two people, unless you're a big boi. And even then... One thing I probably wouldn't recommend unless you're really into karaage or orange chicken are their special chicken plates (they rotate through various flavors). They're not crunchy and really just taste like overly marinaded orange chicken to me, though they give a lot. The poke bowls are jumbo sized and delicious, but cost an arm and a leg. Their katsu curry is pretty solid (darker, complex, and savory) and one of our go-tos, but we wish there was more curry. They have a section on the side where you can buy fresh musubi, onigiri, inarizushi and the likes. They also make butter mochi, furikake mixes, banchan, and Hawaiian snacks. They do shave ice as well, and though they claim they have fruit puree flavors, they've only had the artificial syrups every time I've gone. The shave ice tastes pretty standard to what you'd get from an old school shave ice place in Hawaii. There is a 15% auto-gratuity on food purchases, and no substitutions or modifications. They sometimes sell out earlier than closing. This is very much a fantastic local spot for Hawaiian food, snacks, and takeout. I think they're worth making the drive from SF or SJ as well; it's a pretty lowkey hidden gem, despite their historical popularity. read more

Came here just after opening with my wife since we were craving Hawaiian plate lunches. Immediately we realized why coming at opening was the smart move because there was a line out the door. Granted, the shop is not very large and the parking is even more limited. Right as you walk in, you'll see an assortment of musubi along the wall and a mini grocery store with all the essentials you could need for a simple Hawaiian meal. Lots of items that are Hawaii based. There's a small dining area to the other side of the store and food counter, with a bar top seating area facing out the windows. My wife ordered a poke bowl and the fish was very fresh. They use chili crisp which adds a little heat and lots of umami but ends up being slightly salty if you're not eating it with rice or greens. The crusted ono was definitely a sleeper! Flakey and crispy exterior with a meaty and dense interior. Their mac salad is refreshing and not too heavy. Been wanting to try this place after seeing it on social media! Parking is limited, but there is street parking available. My husband and I came in and ordered food - loco moco, garlic shrimp and crab mac salad. The portions are huge - we loved that the garlic shrimp was peeled already and the sauce was great. We were able to take it home as leftovers, they have a bunch of items that we would typically get from Hawaii from pancake mix, syrups, sodas, etc. They have a variety of to go snacks to get such as musubis with different add ons like tamago, shrimp or avacado, etc. They have a few tables where you can sit down and they have shave ice for sale that definitely gives the Hawaii vibes. So Ono! This spot is the like being in Hawaii. Everything on the menu delicious. The poutine is made with a generous portion of fries, topped with brown gravy, melty cheese, two eggs, and pickled onions. It's hearty and satisfying. The garlic chicken is a little spicy, sweet, and savory. It's a flavor blast. The chicken has a crunchy batter, dipped in a garlicky. Savory, sweet chili sauce. I feel like I hit the jack pot when I stumbled across this Hawaiian market. It's hard to find places that offer a variety of musubi like you'd get in Hawaii. The plates are also unique compared to what you'd find at a chain Hawaiian spot. I really enjoyed my Japanese katsu curry with Mac salad and furikake rice. You know it's legit when they add pickled ginger on top. So good! I packed the spam and hashbrown musubi for breakfast the next morning before going to the airport! It was delicious and filling! I appreciate the ratio of teriyaki sauce in the rice. They also sell goods from Hawaii and staple japanese drinks to pair with the food. It's a cute spot with great food! They have tables too so you can eat there if you want. I saw a review about pricing and honestly it felt standard for bay area prices. I don't mind spending money on local businesses like this. Great spot to satisfy your Hawaiian grub fix! I forgot to take pictures...but we got the Hamburger Steak and the Fried Mochiko Chicken Plate. Delicious...and huge portions. The Musubis are good too. Personally, I think they're a bit pricey though (at around $9/ea). There are tables if you want to enjoy your food on-site, but every time I've been there all the tables were full. I discovered Diamond Head general store on Tiktok awhile back and had it bookmarked for some time now. We dropped my mom off at SFO and I was going through my bookmarks of places to eat in SF. This was close by, so we decide to check it out! It was 4pm by the time we got there and they close at 5pm on Sunday. They don't have online ordering, as their items are available until sell out. I wanted to try their crunchy chili garlic chicken, but they were sold out for the day. I opted for the Loco Moco with meatloaf, as I see that it's one of the popular items. My bf ordered the fried Mochiko chicken. While waiting for our order, I browsed through the aisles of Hawaiian groceries. I ended up buying lychee sour belts, li hing gummies, shrimp chips, and their dessert special of the day, fresh matcha strawberry mochi lol. Now I probably spent about $70 for my two entree and snacks; a bit pricy lol. The portions were huge!!! The chicken pieces were nice and big, with a crispy panko coating, brushed with a sweet glaze. We've tried mochiko chicken in Maui at Tin Roof, and this was soooo much better; my bf and I both agreed. The loco moco meatloaf was as big as the container they packed it in! The gravy was tasty and I was able to finish the whole thing for lunch and dinner lol. We would definitely come back again to try their other Hawaiian entrees and get the Mochiko Chicken and Moco Loco again! New spot for Hawaiian food for sure! read more

Small market with a handful of tables inside for dining in. More of a take-out vibe so tables were pretty limited on a Sunday afternoon. We got a few spam and tamago musubis which were pretty good, no complaints. We also shared the crunchy chili garlic chicken, which came with 2 scoops of rice and mac salad. Kids wanted to stop here after seeing this shop featured on Check Please and it was worth the visit! Our timing was perfect as there was no line to order and plenty of seating. Kids each got some musubis to go and they both ordered the mochiko chicken plate. I grabbed the crab inari three pack as well. The chicken! A huge portion with the two scoops of rice and Mac salad with star being the tender and juicy chicken. It tastes like it is brined which is so good to do. I had a couple of bites dunked in the chili water in the table. A nice accompanyment! The store has lots of Hawaiian products and even has shave ice with lots of flavor offerings. Next time! One of the kids ate the Spam tempura musubi in the car and liked it. Only suggestion is to not douse it in the sauce versus in the musubi itself because the plastic is covered in it and messy. I also saw a three pack of daifuku at another table and was envious. I saw a fresh strawberry one and will have to get it next time. This is definitely a place to try. I had this spot saved in my bookmarks for a while now and I glad my friend chose this spot as I was too busy driving to decide on where to eat. Parking is very, very limited. I got super lucky and found street parking right in front of the store. Upon entering, it definitely brought me back to Hawaii. The vibes, interior, food, atmosphere! It's like a mini store that had a wide variety of musubis, inari, onigiris, and snacks! I immediately saw a cute Hawaii foodie bag that I had to buy! Loaded up my cart with 6 different types of Li Hing candies (peach rings, Coca Cola gummy, gummy worms, gushers, etc). I shared them with my work team. For food, I had limited time so I opted for the spicy crab inari and unagi/egg/avo/spam musubi. The Li Hing candies were $6/each. Spicy crab inari $10 -- definitely worth it! They were huge and were so yummy! The unagi/egg/avo/spam musubi was $9 and was a thick size. Good flavor. Staff were very friendly. Plenty of seating to dine in. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30p. Seating area was full but we were able to grab a table for 4 by the time our food was ready. The vibe inside was cool. The place is very clean and nicely decorated. They had a wide selection to choose from. I ended up with the Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken for myself and the Nama Chicken Katsu for my wife. We also ordered 2 Unagi, Egg, Spam Masubi and a spicy crab inari. I'll begin with portion size. My one order was easily enough for 2 people. They are very generous with the main dish and rice and macaroni. The Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken was okay. It's definitely something I wouldn't try again. It was crunchy and sweet, but I was expecting a little more; maybe more spicy, maybe more sweet. It was just missing something for me. I had some of the Nama Katsu, which was also just okay for me. I prefer a more crispy, crunchy katsu. This katsu felt a little soggy for me. Not bad, but not my preference. The Masubis were massive. I could barely fit it in my mouth. Again, I applaud the generous portion, but I found it hard to eat. I prefer a smaller form factor. The Spicy Crab inari was pretty good. No complaints. All in all, it's a nice spot to try. It's a much nicer place than an L&L or Hawaiian Drive Inn. I also like the grocery store portion which had tons of cool products. That said, the items I tried didn't wow me. I'll likely go back and try a few other items. I'm sure they have a few items that would be an absolute hit for me. It's all about trial and error.
