Build your own bowl
Jasmine C.

One day I was getting matcha next door and noticed how busy this place was for lunch. It also smelled good. Stopped by here the next time I was in Burlingame Ave. this spot offers build your own bowl or set poke bowls. It's a little pricey but you do get a big serving if you choose most of their toppings. I got the regular bowl. It comes with 2 proteins. I chose salmon. For sauces I got ponzu and yuzu. It was citrusy and bright. I love the combo! Fish was fresh. The white rice was soft and the texture of sushi rice was on point. Customer service was excellent. Staffs were friendly.

Wow! What's a great poke place! Came here for first time and had a pleasant experience. Ordered the yuzu salmon and hamachi bowl and I really enjoyed this dish. The salmon and hamachi were fresh and light! Not fishey or gamey at all. The rice was also made fresh and paired so well with everything else! The service was great! As someone with food allergies, I was really impressed with the service. The staff were incredibly friendly and took my allergies seriously, double-checking everything to ensure my meal was safe. That extra care gave me a real sense of trust. Highly recommend for the fresh food and the peace of mind! I love the location and I'm glad to find a great spot here!

Sake tasting event in collaboration with Sakeman
Raymond N.

Tuna Kahuna had a special sake tasting event in collaboration with Sakeman. Since I was already in the area and early for my dinner plans, I decided to stop by for a quick bit. The inside of the restaurant has a few tables for dining in and quite a few seats at the bar area with TVs directly above the bar, making this a great destination to grab some drinks and food after work. During the sake tasting I tried five different types of sake. Sakeman did a thorough job of describing each sake upon pouring and suggesting what types of food would pair great with each one. Since I am not a regular sake drinker, it was nice to be able to really taste the differences in each. For the fifth and final pour, this bottle was kept in the fridge and was recommended to try both cold and at room temperature (after warming up a bit) and it was surprising to notice the differences in taste. I really enjoyed the sake tasting event at Tuna Kahuna. It was also nice meeting the owner of the restaurant and getting to chat with him a bit. With the exceptional service and overall vibe of Tuna Kahuna, I regret not ordering a poke bowl during this visit since it would've tasted much better than the food I had at my preplanned dinner a block away!

I will definitely come back here again, this is a great poke store in downtown Burlingame that deserves its success. I ordered a bowl with kahuna white rice, salmon, edamame, corn, seaweed salad, shredded nori, sesame seeds, and furikake. Each of these came with a heaping portion and was so delicious! The quality of the fish here is excellent, you could do without sauces and let the flavor profile of the salmon shine on its own. After mixing my bowl up, it tasted so delicious and so fresh! Each bite had its own unique texture.

Tuna Kahuna is a fresh poke spot that totally delivered on a quick, flavorful lunch. I went with the staff's recommendation of the Yuzu Salmon and Hamachi Bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was super fresh, all the ingredients complemented each other beautifully, and both the togarashi nori and yuzu truffle sauce added such a rich, umami punch. I also learned they host special dinners from time to time, so I'm definitely looking forward to returning for more of their lunch options and those events soon. Highly recommend!

Ginger scallion bowl

This might be the best poke I've had in the Bay. It's a bit pricier than other poke spots, but the portions are generous and the fish quality is great. The ginger scallion bowl is fresh and well balanced, and the sauce is there to enhance, not hide anything.

Happen to come here on a rainy day after the lunch rush at the request of my wife and son who were nearby with a poke craving. Before I could have a chance to scan the menu with the various selections I received a Big Kahuna hello from Quan who I later learned was one of the owners of this location which has been on Burlingame Ave for 10 years. Reciting the take out order which at my age would never had remembered due to all the customizations, I decided to dine in and eat my regular size bowl of hamachi and salmon with a glass of their La Crema Chardonnay from Sonoma. My bowl was amazing with the seafood cubes and veggies being fresh along with the wine which paired nicely. I learned that we both knew someone who works at a restaurant that we both frequent. The interior place is small however the restaurant has a lot of heart thanks to Quan and the staff working on the day I was there.

Tuna Kahuna is hole in the wall poke shop in Burlingame. You can easily miss the restaurant if you walk by. There are only a few tables to sit but you can always enjoy your food via takeout or at the bar table. The poke here is very solid. We ordered the Spicy Chili Garlic Bowl and the Salmon Lover Bowl. The Spicy Chili Garlic came with hamachi and tuna and was not super spicy, just a kick. The Salmon Lover bowl came with of course salmon and edamame and more veggies. The fish tasted fresh and the dressings complimented the bowls. Decent serving of fish with each bowl. Definitely worth trying if you are in the area and want to try poke.

Yum!! Stopped by here because I was craving sushi for lunch and I was in the area. There are fish is extremely fresh and I really love how big the portions are. I got the spicy chili crunch and it had good flavor. It is definitely on the pricier side as I paid almost $25 for a signature bowl, but it can easily feed two meals so it felt worth it lol Would definitely come back if I'm in the area!

Stopped by here on our way pass SF and remembered this place a few years back and I remember liking the place. What caught my eye at first is that they actually sell FRESH crab meat and knowing my bf that loves crab.. I had to take him here! He got the fresh crab, salmon, spicy tuna. And I got the spicy tuna and salmon. The salmon chunks were actually THICC. Tasted fresh, seasoned nicely and overall.. our mouths were happy. You're able to order in person with the cashier OR you can sit down on one of their tables and scan the QR code that's linked into the table. We chose to sat down. Overall, we have a great experience and definitely will be back again!

One of my favorite places to eat in Burlingame. We normally let Quan give us his version of omakase and enjoy everything he gives us. Food is fresh and has a great atmosphere. Always fun eating here

We have still been ordering from Tuna Kahuna since they've opened (5 years!) and it's still my favorite 'poke' place. Came here recently, and figured I should update my review (last one 2022). If I could eat this every week, I totally would. Though it would def hurt my wallet. It's not cheap, but it makes sense bc they use fresh ingredients. I don't know if it's "poke;" I still think of it as an elevated sashimi bowl (fresh salmon) with the accoutrements of a poke bowl (radish, imitation crab, etc). For 5 years, I've been ordering the Yuzu Salmon. I don't even know what other options they have because they make this one so well. People working there are super friendly. You can order at your table with QR code or go to register. Parking can be annoying so sometimes we do order take out or delivery. The food travels well. Inside is kind of small, easy for 2 ppl to get table, might be hard for larger parties. They have outdoor seats too.

Tuna Kahuna Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Tuna Kahuna

Do they have table dine in service? I only see pictures of to go bowls...

Yes, they have tables and even a bar that you can eat at! It's just the packaging and ordering process will be the same as the to-go orders.

Do they check for vaccination status? If yes do they still have an outdoor table?

They didn't check ours

How much is the chef box?

Approximately $85/box but price may vary depending on type of sushi and sashimi are included. Get 1 box and try if it's enough to share for 2x people. It's definitely worth it so enjoy it!

Is chef box offer at lunch time for Saturday?

You have to reserve it in advance. When you do, they whip out a huge folder(!) and let you know which remaining time slots are available.

Is dine-in an option or only take-out?

They do have outdoor seatings and Only 1 table for dine in.

Are they still offering their kahuna chef's box?

Yes.. Pre order only.

Is there a kids bowl? If so, do you know how much they would be?

$12. Worth every penny!

What is the nutritional information of your bowls? Particularly carb count?

This meal is rice free so there's an insignificant amount of carbs.

Their sashimi selection is incredibly fresh, beautifully cut, and perfectly packaged to-go. I'm a huge fan of their tuna--especially the otoro, chutoro, and akami--but you honestly can't go wrong with their salmon, uni, or any of their other fresh fish selections. Their hot food section is just as impressive and made fresh daily. Whether it's chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, sushi bowls, nigiri, chicken karaage, or grilled salmon, everything hits the spot and tastes homemade. What really makes this place special is the family behind it. You'll almost always see Ken, Shu, Misako, or their mother Ryuko, and they make the whole experience feel welcoming and authentic. And if you're into whiskey or just a casual drinker, keep an eye out for their selection--they occasionally carry rare bottles like Yamazaki and Hakushu, which are getting harder to find these days. Overall, Suruki is a gem in San Mateo. Quality, freshness, and great people--what more can you ask for?

We got 3 dozen oysters and some poke chips to share! The oysters were fat, and not extremely salty/briny - very creamy! Come early, because it truly becomes a madhouse! I actually came here twice. The first time, we came at 8 PM and they were sold out. The cashier told us they were sold out around 6 PM. We came back again two weeks later at 5 PM, and there were luckily minimal people in line so we got our oysters. We ordered 3 dozen. They said the wait would be around 10 minutes, but we ended up waiting 35 minutes. If it was that long of a wait without many people in the store, I wonder how hectic it would be when people started flooding in. When we left at 6:30, the line was out the door. So again, COME EARLY! The oysters were medium-small and very fresh. Some of the oysters had chunks of ice on it from the ice layer. It came with cocktail sauce, mignonette, and a soy sauce with green onions. You can grab Tapatio and Tabasco on the counter. Personally, I didn't like the soy sauce because it amplified the fishy taste of the oysters. I enjoyed the cocktail sauce with a hint of horseradish, as well as the mignonette with the crunchy onions. Lemon squeezes are a must although I wish they gave us more. I ate a dozen while my friend ate two dozen. I was very satisfied with this happy hour. The cleanliness of the store was good although sometimes trays of oysters would be left out for a long time. The customer service was super friendly. It seems like a decent place for poke as well beyond their oysters. The taro chips looked really good; I almost got one. The decor was quirky and overall, it was a casual vibe inside this shop. I feel like you can't beat $1 oysters (that were fresh and perfectly sized). I'd make the trek here again.

A few notes: * Not everything in the store is labelled with prices * Hot food was pretty average in my opinion * Price vs value wasn't great in terms of quality of food Onto the hot food: * butter mochi - definitely the best thing we ordered here! Chewy buttery and soft in texture. Don't skip this. * garlic shrimp- this was recommended by the cashier but it was quite lacking in depth of flavor with the primary taste just being garlic. No spice, nothing special to stand out. After a while the sauce gets tiring. Mac salad was prominently peppery but bland in both texture and flavor. * Mochiko chicken - Not bad, crunchy battered chicken. Interior of the chicken was juicy but lacking in that distinct strong sweet savory that mochiko chicken is known for. Again, the mac salad was a letdown. Overall, the food was quite average especially for the price point. I can think of two places in SJ with better Hawaiian food for half the price.
