Looking for a nice place to spend the evening during our mountain getaway. Found this nestled in the Lodge, and it did not disappoint. We had a late lunch so we decided to split the 20oz Bone in Ribeye and a lobster tail for our entree. We also split a wedge salad and a "cup" of soup. The salad was very fresh and crisp. A small note was that there was some heavily wilted and browned lettuce in the middle of the wedge. Unfortunately nothing they could have found prior to us eating it. The soup was a corn and potato chowder with bacon. Absolutely awesome! Our steak came undercooked so we sent it back and they finished it nicely. We were warned they tend to undercook but this was even more than we would have thought. Despite that, the prime steak was amazingly marbled and caramelized. Every tasted incredible and the service was attentive. Despite telling staff not to, they comped our salad for the wilted lettuce and the undercooked steak. This is a tough one for me. Our family loves John Elway. My father was a huge fan, and was taken from us after battling cancer. So, I had to go in his honor. Let me say, THE FOOD WAS GREAT. We got a filet, mashed potatoes, and salmon. All of it was perfect! Now, the service. They tried so hard, but came up short. Our servers were so cold and unfriendly. The food sat for a minute before they brought it out, almost like they forgot. Took way too long. We were celebrating our anniversary, and were delighted when they gave us a card at our table. We opened the card and it was signed by the staff, and it said, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" All I could say was, "Awww bless their hearts." At least they tried. We ordered a pretty comprehensive and complete meal, steaks, salad, sides but they forgot our lobster tail. Then we couldn't decide on a wine. The house and the Elways reserve, I believe we almost undrinkable. Perhaps they were open too long. Our waiter sent for the Sommelier, she was pretty horrifying, when she realized we were local, pushed several times asking us "how much do you want to spend" super offensive, no discussion on palette, preferred flavors. Like shit, I could do that job! What an a-hole! We dismissed her then our service fell flat, enquired again about our lobster nothing, so we cancelled that order. Poor experience from the start. The hostesses didn't take our coats but were sure to remind us of our time limit for dining. Our server was terrible. She rushed us through ordering, staff brought food to our table without explaining what they were serving (I still don't know what the yellow sauce was with the tuna tartare). Worst of all was the steak. It was cold and instead of the blue cheese being cooked on top- which our server told us it was- cold sauce was dumped on top of our $90 porterhouse (which was also cold). We were in Vail and wanted to find a good Steakhouse. Elway's came up on both Yelp and Open Table and had great reviews. I decided to make a reservation on Open Table (yes, I like the points!) and we headed there. LOCATION: Located right in Vail Village. It took us a bit to find it... went a roundabout way. Has an outdoor patio with a "fire" pit. There was a private party there so we didn't use the patio at all. SERVICE: We were greeted and seated quickly. Jeff was our server and he came over quickly with water and took our drink order. Our appetizers came out quickly as well as our dinners. FOOD: OMG.... so good! We started with Calamari and roasted Artichokes. The Clamari was done perfectly and seasoned well. They also included breaded olives and carrots. I've never had that before and it was just ok. The Artichokes... simply delish! They were roasted and served with melted butter and Elway's specialty Aioli. Both these dishes were a good size for sharing - 4 people in our party. I had the Elway Burger: Burger with Egg, Bacon, Cheese and potato sticks. It was ok. Cooked perfectly. But then again it was a burger. I wish I had ordered something else. The guys had the 6oz filet and they said it was delicious! I also tried the Elway's #7 Cabernet. I'd highly recommend. Expensive night but definitely worth the trip! read more

This was a good meal but the overall service was a little questionable. We didn't get any silver wear and the bread came and so we couldn't butter it without silverware. We asked the women that brought out wine for silverware. We ordered the calamari app and me and wife split Caesar salad. The calamari was weird no sauce "visible" they said it was in the bottom of the bowl. May have been but still seemed light. Was odd not what we are use to at every other place we ever ordered calamari. The Caesar salad was really good we enjoyed it. We all ordered steaks wife 8 oz filet and me and my son 10 oz filet. So my wife ordered hers medium it was medium plus. I ordered medium plus it was solid medium/ medium rare and same for my sons steak he ordered medium and it was more on the rare side. I know steaks are hard to get right but as a steak Resturant it has to be right or I can't give you top rating. Sides we got the mash potatoes and the corn both were good. Elway's consistently impresses me. The ambiance, the food and service are unparalleled. The lamb chop lollipops are an absolute MUST. I almost always get the ribeye and it's prepared to perfection. This time I tried the burger and was not let down. A few mentionable items that were delicious are the espresso martinis, calamari, lobster tails, and the mushrooms. The server, Sibin, was exemplary. Our waiter mentioned that we would get a "champagne toast on him". Salmon was incredibly blanked and quite fishy. Husbands steak was raw. Gordon Ramsey would say it's "still moo-ing". There are so many fantastic restaurants in Vail, go to them instead. It was just terrible in almost every way, beginning with off-duty staff at the bar who provided the distractions needed to slow service and disregard customers. The menus were covered with old gook. I wouldn't touch it. My filet mignon was like a hunk of stew beef. My potatoes weren't hot, twice. I gave up half-way through and just sent it all back. No one came to the table, no one curious. The check came and I was billed the full amount. It's as though the staff was clueless. I was on a date and paid and left, not how I would have handled it otherwise. My husband and I dined here with pretty high expectations. We've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to enjoy quite a few high end steak houses and are usually very impressed. Let me break down this particular experience at what we categorize as a below average steak house. 1. Location. Very difficult to find in the Village. Signage is terrible. 2. Hostess- meh. 3. Drinks- A+ on quality. Took a bit to get a server to the table. Once he arrived his service was excellent. He was friendly, offered suggestions when asked and moved about as though he had things to get done. 4. Table bread- really good. We're both sourdough fans and this did not disappoint. 5. Appetizer- we enjoyed the spicy spinach dip. We highly recommend the calorie splurge. 6. Soup/Salad- I had the fall special. Butternut squash soup was bland and bore the consistency of baby food. I do not recommend. He had the Caesar salad. How do you go wrong with chopped romaine? Well, if you do you have issues. This one was fine. 7. Entree- I ordered the 6oz filet. It was cooked as expected but was murdered by salt. Reminded me more of a Brazilian style steak house. While the meat was tender, the salt was too much. He ordered the 12oz USDA prime New York Strip. It should have come with a saw. It was a bad cut of meat and a good chef would have tossed it on the trash before it was served to a guest. My husband called over the manager who decided now was a good time to turn on his phone flashlight, shine it on the meat and instruct him to cut through the center. The center was medium rare, as ordered, but the ends were medium well, which is a clear indicator it was improperly cooked, on top of being a bad piece of meat. The manager instructed him to eat it for a few minutes and he would be back to check on him. When he returned my husband had decided he was not going to eat this piece of meat and he would eat mine instead. (I usually only eat about 3oz of my steaks so it was fine and it was too salty for me anyway). The manager offered to bring a different piece of meat or "something else" like a side. He was difficult to understand. My husband politely declined and the manager insisted on brining something. A few minutes later a plate of tempura Brussels were delivered. Neither of us wanted them. My husband politely decided to try one. That was a mistake. It was rushed cooked, overly firm, and just gross. 8- the bill- the one meal was removed from the bill. The manager decided to ADD the Brussels that were NOT requested by either of us. Sure, it was only $13.50 on a bill that neared $200, but it is the principle of the matter. We didn't ask for it. We didn't want it. If you're going to "COMP" something for a guest that was the recipient of a unsatisfactory meal, COMP it. Don't underhand charge them for it as if perhaps they wouldn't notice on the bill. Because when you do, reviews like this happen. We would have been perfectly content taking our less than desirable experience away as a lesson learned. Instead, we decided to share our experience. Overall, we would not go back. I had a horrible experience with the bald male manager. I ordered a filet cooked medium. It came out well done.. So they made me another steak and it came out raw. So I had the manager take it back. And in doing so, he had an attitude with me and mocking me by saying ya ya ya ya to my complaint. Then he forcefully dumped my steak in the trash as so I would notice. Horrible experience last night. Server didn't seem very excited to be our server. He didn't pour our champagne once. He seemed overly irritated that we were asking questions about the menu I ordered the butternut squash soup. Couldn't eat it as it tasty super fishy. All waiter said is "I have never heard that one before". They replaced it with their chicken corn chowder and it was meh. My husband ordered the ceaser which was just a bowl of romaine with weird ceaser taste For our entrees my daughter ordered the kids steak and mashed potatoes, which was overly salty. My husband ordered the rack of lamb He cut into and just couldn't cut at all. The manager came over and asked him to cut it again and agreed it was a bad piece. Service was amazing. When my husband called to make a reservation the hostess asked if it was a special event, he said yes it was our anniversary.... We were welcomed with a happy anniversary card signed by the whole staff and good wishes from everyone who waited on us. The food was excellent, the mashed potatoes are a must! When we protested that we couldn't eat another bite our waiter sent us home with a chocolate dessert. I just opened it to find it was specialty decorated for our 15th Anniversary. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS! MOLDY FOOD! 1) The near empty restaurant had no hostess. We didn't know what to do so we walked in and found her leaning into the kitchen listening to a story the cook was telling her. We even stood over her and the cook even motioned to her that guests were behind her but she wasn't looking up. We went to the bar and the nice bartender apologized and got her attention. What does she do? She said something like she didn't see us walk by (as if she was at the hostess stand the entire time). Her response pissed me off far more than the waiting. I wish the bad times ended there, read on for MOLD: 2) It was a "love" themed restaurant week in Vail. Their appetizer special was appropriately enough Oysters, which they were out of. I had the shrimp cocktail which while far from fresh, were large and tasty enough. The porterhouse steak for two was small but very well prepared which made up for the thinnest porterhouse I've ever seen. But what a dopey presentation- one plate with a big steak filling it, and another completely empty except for some seasonings. It makes such a bad impression, and while a fine steakhouse would ALWAYS slice a porterhouse for two (send my best to Peter Lugar), I was stuck doing it, working around the huge bone. That's simply not romantic, and a lazy decision by the management for sure. 3) We got the chocolate covered strawberry dessert to go. Later that night we were frustrated that no utensils were included (strawberries were in a puddle of nasty looking moose). I'll live so I ate one of the berries. My girl came over to eat the other one and we realized that THE STRAWBERRIES WERE COVERED IN MOLD. -white fuzzy shit! I had just eaten mine w/o looking for fungus first! Gross is a dirty fork, this was downright disgusting and I nearly threw up to purge the mossy mold ASAP. Don't believe me? See the attached pic (if it will upload). 4) The credit card slip showed that we were undercharged by $20. You'd think by now we would have left with the unintended (but deserved) discount. Instead we took the high road and pointed this out to the waiter who said he would re-run the card for the higher amount. We suggested that he only do it for $20 as to not create future problems. As of 3 days later (now), WE ARE STILL BEING CHARGED TWICE!!! Terrible management breeds terrible staff. I don't care if this was off season. On the last night of our honeymoon, Neal served up an excellent meal of lamb fondue, kale salad, and a porterhouse that really put an excellent trip to vail over the top for us. We couldn't be happier with the food and drinks, but the service really made the meal, that on its own, was excellent, into an unforgettable experience that capped the trip off. KNOWN FOR - Steaks I TRIED - House Salad (7/10) - Creamed Corn (8/10) - 22oz Bone In Ribeye (3/10) I was staying at the Marriott Vail Resort and since I was there just a week before ski season started (I was there for work), I was given a list of all the restaurants in the area that have out-of-season discounts. I noticed there was a restaurant called "Elway's" and I was like...whoa, like John Elway? He has a steakhouse?! I'm not sure why I was so mesmerized by this, because so does Mike Ditka and Michael Jordan. Anyway, they were serving some special 3 course meal for $50. I don't remember what it was, but I just couldn't bear to go to a steakhouse and give a review about Filet medallions, that's just criminal! HOUSE SALAD People in Vail really know how to put together a nice House Salad. Even the ones from Marriott's room service was awesome, and about the same as this. The salad is fresh and tossed in a white balsamic vinaigrette dressing. My favorite part, it comes with a few kalamata olives. If they could scratch the yellow peppers and add blue cheese, we'd be golden, but still, a very good salad! CREAMED CORN Had this as a side. Don't think I've ever ordered creamed corn as a side before, so I think the only thing I can compare this to is whatever Del Monte puts out in a can. The cream was thick and had just the perfect amount of seasoning. The corn was perfectly firm and also very sweet to compliment the cream very well. The only weird thing is that the cream (and I don't know if this is normally supposed to be good) sometimes tasted like straight up half and half. The seasoning helped, but didn't fully mask this, so that milk taste was very strong. Not bad, just unique. BONE IN RIBEYE Now, last AND least, the ribeye. It came out looking and smelling heavenly. As I was cutting into it, I heard the beautiful sound of the fine crisp on the surface. I was excited! That first bite, and I was like, WOWwhoa... The texture for the first 1/4 second was everything I wanted it to be. My molars had just broken through crispy char on the outside of the steak, lending not only a beautiful feeling, but a nice char-y/smoky flavor...but then it was immediately halted by by the rest of the steak. :( The inside of the steak, while looking like a very good medium rare was extremely tough. I mean this is tougher than a New York Strip! See, I eat a lot, and eating requires a lot of jaw exercises. My jaw is the equivalent of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime Mr. Olympia days. Only halfway through the steak, my jaws were just screaming mercy. I powered through the rest of it, but that was the longest dinner ever, because every bite took some serious dedicated willpower and, obviously, jaw power. You know when you chew on meat for a long time, flavors gradually go away, and then it feels like you're just chewing on a pencil eraser or something. Even if it had great flavor, that would only last for about 15% of the bite, the rest is just chew chew chew.. NOT a good experience! I would venture out to say....bad quality meat! FUMBLECEPTION Not only did I not enjoy my steak at all, I didn't see John Elway! Unfortunately, through my long list of steakhouses that I've been to, I'm afraid Elway's Vail is toward the bottom, amongst the likes of Outback! I'm sure there are other things on that menu, but I'm severely disappointed by the steak...and the price! That titanium steak cost me $49! That's more than a bone in ribeye at Morton's, and that is one of my top 5 steaks! read more
