We reserved a table for two people on OpenTable right at opening 5pm and we were seated when they opened. The inside is nicely decorated and has a few tables outside near the entrance. We were seated inside in an area towards the back near the kitchen. We appreciated the fast service and large portions. We got the crispy brussel sprouts which were delicious, the Schmaltz fried rice and Orange chicken which are also great. The portions were so large that we had a lot of food to pack. For the bill, they automatically added a 20% tip and 5% for employee benefits. The total for the food and one drink and including the 25% was around $88.
I stopped in to DanDan the other night for dinner and absolutely loved it. I sat at the bar and the two bartenders working that night were incredible at efficiently making drinks for the restaurant while also making the guests at the bar feel taken care of. I had the Singapore noodles for my main, which was outside of what I normally would have tried, but I loved the curry flavor with the char sui pork. I had the Ric's Got Flair to drink, which is their version of a whiskey sour, which was delightful. If I lived in Milwaukee, I would come regularly!
WOW! That food was the best I've had in a really long time. We ordered the pork sichuan dumplings - so flavorful! Then the smashed cucumbers that were light and tasty. They came with peanuts which I had never had before but LOVED the combo. Then we had the Dan Dan noodles which were meaty, and the peppers were spicy! I really liked the flavor, it had more curry in it than I expected. Finally we ended with the beef chow fun. It had these thick, delicious rice noodles YUM in still thinking about it. I think the dumplings and the beef chow fun were easily the best. This place has peanuts in most dishes I would stay away from here if you have an allergy. ALSO, portions are big here - the staff recommends sharing everything and I totally agree. The ambiance is very nice, it's lower lighting and is great for a dinner with your girlfriends or significant other. I loved the decorations! Our server was super nice and the food runners were super helpful! I will definitely be back again.
The vibes inside are incredible & some of the food is great, some is average. We loved the flavors of the Mongolian beef but the pad Thai left something to be desired.
Most of the restaurants we dine at are usually the result of someone else's recommendation, so we typically have high expectations. I don't often give a 2-star rating to these restaurants, so I was sad that our experience here was so disappointing. We had 5:15 reservations on a Wednesday evening. There were not too many people there when we arrived, and we got seated right away. The last time we were at this location, it was the "Tulip" restaurant, which served excellent Mediterranean cuisine. Food: To start, we ordered a couple of specialty cocktails: the Island Magic #815 for me and Murphy's Law for her. Both of these were delicious. For food, we decided on the Dill Dumplings, Pad Thai, and Rice Cakes & Pork Belly. They serve everything tapas-style, so each dish should be at optimum temperature when it comes out. The Dill Dumplings arrived first. They were flavorful, with an excellent mix of flavors. I'm not sure if this is intended, but they are heavily seared on only one side. They need to be eaten whole; otherwise, the halves deconstruct and you end up having to chase the escaped meat around the plate. Is this a serious issue? Only if you want to keep all the flavors together for the most satisfying bite. The Rice Cakes & Pork Belly came next. On the first bite, you are overwhelmed by how salty this dish is. The flavors are excellent with the exception of the salt. The textures are good too, other than how rubbery the rice cakes were. The server noted this when we ordered, but instead of "rubbery," she said "chewy." I like chewy. This was definitely rubbery. This dish was painful to eat because it could have been just so much better. The last dish to arrive was the Pad Thai. It was good, but not remarkable. After our meal, we wanted to end on a high note with dessert. We love crème brûlée, and they had a mango version. Great combination! When it arrived, it was a BIG bowl with a nicely caramelized top. It had a satisfying snap when you pushed your spoon through it. But underneath, there was no firm custard. It was literally a bowl of mango soup. This is not an exaggeration. It was so loose that you couldn't keep it on the small spoons. So disappointing. Service: Everyone we interacted with during the meal was kind and pleasant. We enjoyed the service at our table. The server and the food runners did a nice job with our orders, drinks, and food. They were eager to answer our questions and make suggestions. When we mentioned the issues we had with our food, I wasn't sure they were enthusiastic about relaying our concerns to the kitchen. Both the Rice Cakes & Pork Belly and the crème brûlée were a bit of an embarrassment. Without us asking, they did offer to take the dessert off the bill. We are not in the business of negotiating the price of a bad meal, so the entire situation was uncomfortable. Atmosphere: The interior of the place is really well done. It definitely gives you the vibe of Asian food, but with a twist. I have not been to Asia, but I could imagine this restaurant fitting in. There are plenty of interesting things to look at, with hanging pictures, ceramics, and quirky tchotchkes. We were surprised by how bad our experience was. With the owners (Dan & Dan) being mentioned in many local food articles, I expected much better. With that in mind, we are not planning to go back.
My friends from Madison and I have been dying to grab dinner here so it was a big deal when our many texts about "dinner at Dan Dan" left the group chat and became a Saturday night reality. I'll start with what we liked - the ambiance, the location in the historic Third Ward (although finding street parking close by can be tricky on a weekend), the service. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu which is always appreciated and makes for a better dining experience. When we arrived we had a reservation so it was nice to have zero wait time. We were led back to our table and ordered drinks. The non-alcoholic menu was slim on options but the options were creative. We were told dishes are made to be shared so we ordered a few bigger dishes and the kimchi pancakes. When the kimchi pancakes came out it was nice that they were deconstructed so you could build your own as you like. Kimchi can be an acquired taste so I personally liked being able to control how much I had in each bite. The other dishes were large. These are not shareable dishes- they are legt. main courses. The Mongolian beef was ok. It had a lot of vegetables and color which was nice. The Mapo Tofu dish was a let down. It kills me to say that but it tasted funky. It was a strange flavor and not a good one. On the menu, this dish has three chili peppers next to it which the server told us indicated that it is one of the spiciest dishes on the menu. It had zero heat and zero spice. I asked for some chili crunch to add on top which I also thought fell flat on flavors. The flavors all around just weren't jiving for me. And there was fresh cilantro (maybe?) on top which did not help the situation. In hindsight the Top Chef coverage of Dan Dan and hype in the local media made us think every dish here was going to be amazing and unfortunately we didn't think so. I don't need to return any time soon.
Visited on a Monday night at 6pm and the room was packed. The sichuan pork dumplings ($15) and short rib potstickers ($16) were flavorful, but small in serving. The dough of the potstickers were dry and chewy like they hadn't been cooked enough, but were accompanied by an incredibly tasty sauce. The CUMIN BEEF SLAP NOODLES ($23) were 10/10 - changed my life. The beef was tender, not chewy, and rich in flavor which complimented the soft biang biang noodle. Happy chicken ($22) was spicy, as expected, with a sweet sauce, but not the most captivating dish on the menu. The mango crème brûlée ($13) flavor was too intense for me. It tasted like fake mango flavoring. Would recommend the island magic cocktail ($15) and lucky Buddha beer ($7). They were out of Sapporo which was disappointing for an Asian based restaurant. Our server, Nicholas, was fantastic - attentive and friendly! The ambiance is pleasant and cozy.
When you first walk into DanDan, you're welcomed with an abundance of plants where the host brings you to your table. We made reservations, so we were sitted pretty quick. Upon being sitted we were greeted and helped by our server, Peyton, who was beyond helpful. Gave us suggestions of the best sellers, as well as, his personal favorites. He was friendly and quick to clear our table or help us with anything we needed. My friend and I started dinner with the Sichuan Pork Dumplings and two mocktails; Company Refresher and Puttin' on the Spritz. The Sichuan Pork Dumplings were so good. Can't go wrong with Dumplings and chili oil. The sauce was so good, we ended up saving it to pair with our rice dish. The two mocktails were amazing as well. Of the two, the Company Refresher was my favorite as it, tasted like strawberry soda. For the main course, we got the Happy Chicken, Glass Noodle Stir Fry, and the Beef Chow Fun. All of the dishes were amazing! The Happy Chicken was not too spicy and was nice and crispy, it also came with a side of rice. My favorite was the Glass Noodle Stir Fry. The noodles were chunky and chewy. I loved the mixed of vegetables within the dish. The Beef Chow Fun was also an amazing dish. I felt like we had more beef than noodles mixed in it. Overall, everydish did not disappoint! Definitely will come back to try the other dishes and maybe some of their drinks!
I LOVE DanDan. The restaurant is such a cool concept and the food is amazing. I have been here many of times and have never tried a menu item I disliked. They have the best crab ragoons in the Milwaukee and I love the walnut shrimp. The service is always fast and the drink menu has alcohol options, NA options, and THC options. I also enjoy their Friday lunch buffet for those that want to try many of their food options.
It's my mistake for not doing my homework on a restaurant. In the past it's been mentioned that DanDan was a very good restaurant to patronize. But in my opinion $30 for a Friday lunch buffet is very very expensive and it's my fault for checking the prices before hand. No wonder it was not very busy plus the impression that I got was that you needed a reservation on the OpenTable App upon arrival Service was excellent for this timeframe It's all street parking but a parking lot is available after 5 PM for the dinner service Would I come back to try the dinner menu is probably not unless someone else invites and or treats me to dinner here plus 5% service charge is added to help pay for employees benefits but can be removed if requested Since there is no Asian restaurant close by they can charge the prices they want most likely
The 90 mile trip to Milwaukee for their Peking Duck medley was SO worth it! Maybe the best I've ever had. Just do it and don't look back. Hint: be sure to call a day or two ahead and reserve your duck as they often sell out! Thanks to Maggie for her help and mixology and to Annabelle for outstanding service and a great after-dinner reco!
We have been wanting to try DanDan after seeing Dan on Top Chef Wisconsin this past summer. The service was excellent, and the waitress was a stitch. Kept us smiling and well attended. We started out with potstickers and crab rangoons, the flavors and the sauce were wonderful, we both had a cocktail that were unique and good For dinner, we split a happy chicken, caramelized, spices with signature peppers were delicious. I have to admit I love spice for flavor and the balance of spices were wonderful ....Very flavorful and Not too hot. We opted for a shared dessert of mango crème brûlée ... Yum. Would I go back? Yes, was it overly crowded? No, we were seated quickly. Definitely five out of five.
Wanted to try something new in Milwaukee, and I kept seeing Dandan pop up on social media--so of course, we had to try it. We got there about 20 minutes after opening. The minute we walked in, a man sitting next to the hostess--who appeared to be part of the restaurant, not a customer--just stared at us. No greeting, no smile... just staring. The hostess also seemed a bit confused when we walked in. She asked if we had reservations; we said no. Then she asked if a high-top table was fine, as if the restaurant were packed. We agreed, assuming there would be a long wait for a regular table. But as she led us over, there were plenty of regular tables available. So right off the bat, the vibe wasn't particularly welcoming. As for the service, the waitress did a great job with the welcome and checked on us at a perfect pace. We also liked the decor--plenty of cute design elements that would make for great photos and draw people in. The menu was well done too: not overwhelming, just the right amount of variety in each category. Honestly, this part is why I gave the place more stars than I probably should have. As for the food, it was just okay for us--though that may have been due to what we ordered. There were only two of us, and we got three dishes: shrimp fried rice, beef chow fun, and kung pao chicken. We thought that would give us a good variety. The food had good flavor, but all three dishes tasted very similar. If you try these same dishes elsewhere, the flavors are usually more distinct. I do wish we had tried more of the appetizers and drinks--maybe that would have changed our rating a bit.

Decided to go here on a Sunday evening after a MSO performance and waited until the doors opened. We were seated immediately, which was lucky since it wasn't long before the restaurant was full. Our server was quick and friendly, and the food was truly amazing. Our table of 3 shared 2 appetizers, 2 mains, and 1 dessert and were very satisfied. However, we did order an extra bowl of rice since the one served was rather small for us. The Smashed Cucumbers were served cool with crisp flavors. The black vinegar gave it the perfect tang with a little bit of spice, and the cilantro, well, it's cilantro, so it just makes everything better, in my opinion. The potstickers were good-sized and with well-balanced flavors. The taste of the ribs was evident right away with the foie gras, giving it a nice finish. The Happy Chicken was spicy and so good! If you like spice, I highly recommend it! The DanDan noodles also had a bit of spice, but not overwhelmingly so, and the peanuts (which I'm usually not a fan of in food) added a nice, subtle crunch. I've heard the service here can be hit or miss, but our server was fast and attentive, and our food came out quickly. NOTE: a 20% tip is added to your bill automatically. read more
Stopped by Dandan after a while and we had a great experience again. We got the hot and sour egg drop soup (though I prefer the regular hot and soup soup) it was great to have this back on the menu. We got sichaun dumplings and sesame bao. The dumplings were not spicy at all which was a bummer, the bao were delicious but not traditional bao. It was more of a sandwich, still good though. First time here. Went based off some other reviews. I have to say the Sichuan dumplings were amazing a definite must have. The king pao had no flavor. The Mongolian beef was decent and the fried rice was not original. Why had egg and mayo sauce. You ruined it. The Dandan noodles were just wrong. This place is definitely overrated. We sat at the bar because there were no seats available. The bartender made several jokes when we asked questions about the food. She said: this isn't Panda Express... well it taste like it but more expensive. Next time I'm in town I'll skip this place. read more
We have been wanting to try the house special 3 course Peking Duck, and we finally made it happen. It says it serves 2-3 but it's more like 4 people - it was so much food! We had 3 in our group and all had leftovers to take home. Definitely worth the $85 but you do have to order it a day in advance. It starts with a warm, salty and brothy wonton soup with...you guessed it, Duck, Foie Gras Dumplings, Scallions, and Bok Choy. The dumplings were heavenly. Course two is a beautifully presented Duck breast served with perfectly spongey scallion pancakes, House Pineapple Hoisin Sauce and Cucumbers / Radishes. Lastly...if you have any room left is the Duck leg chow fun noodles. The house-made Rice Noodles were phenomenal, you get to bust open your own Duck Egg, and it's smothered in Foie Gras with Scallion, Bok Choy, Tomato, Celery, and Leeks. We did get the mango crème brûlée which was HUGE, so fresh, so interesting, and a perfect way to round out this incredible dinner. Do this. Loved the vibes. Service was ok, not great, not horrible. Wine pours were on the smaller side. Food was delicious and exceeded expectations! We had general tso cauliflower, happy chicken, and crab rangoon. Perhaps odd to mention, but take a trip to the restroom- cute hallway with the ceiling decorated with parasols and fun DanDan wallpaper on the walls! read more

On a Milwaukee foodie adventure and first stop was DanDan. I loved watching Dan Jacobs cook on Top Chef and really wanted to taste his style of Asian fusion. It did not disappoint. Favorite bites were the smashed cucumber salad with black vinegar, the spicy pork dumplings and the Pad Seuw Shrimp! Service was polite, prompt and helpful. Really loved the front entrance. It's deceiving how many people fit inside, from outside it looks like a tiny little restaurant, not the case. It opens into pods or rooms of people. Well thought out although not comfortable for lingering. read more

We had an amazing dinner at DanDan. It was our first visit. The food was great, service good. We were most impressed with the inventiveness and creativity of the dishes. They were so flavorful and delicious! Definitely look forward to going back again the next time we are visiting Milwaukee! read more

Excellent!!! I admit I came here because I watched Top Chef Wisconsin and was impressed with Dan Jacobs' work. Four of us visited on a Monday night (get a reservation!) and every dish we had was incredible. Egg Rolls with a sweet and sour sauce, Sesame Chicken Bao that knocked our socks off, Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken (a bit high on salty taste, but not bad), General Tso's Cauliflower, and Walnut Shrimp were brought out as they were ready (not necessarily at the same time as we were advised) and everyone had some to take home. All dishes are served with rice and the servings are generous. It was my birthday and a toast (on the house) of Los Monteros was a really nice touch. We finished the meal with Mango Creme Brulee and left feeling fully satisfied and looking forward to our next visit. The location is off the busy area around Third Ward and the parking is on the street, free in areas and ample. The atmosphere is super comfortable, and I think they may offer outdoor dining but the days now are too hot so we just admired the flowers as we entered into the cool vibe inside. The sound level is great even when full, and there is a small bar area that I am sure is regularly busy. Casual and comfortable. All in all we had a great meal. Each dish was just slightly altered from the traditional and it was nice to have a few surprises as our dishes came out. My only downside was the server who really didn't listen well and was not showing any interest in her work. But we got all we needed and more than we expected. DanDan is not to be missed. read more

My friend and I visited DanDan on the heels of Top Chef's spotlight on it. We were surprised to see Cheftestant Dan himself at the reception desk, wrangling diner seating. He was very nice. We were seated at a two top along the wall. The decor is mainly what you'd expect from a Chinese concept place - lots of red and black. It's chic, but a little on the nose. The space is also extremely loud. We couldn't hear each other from across the small table for most of the meal. Service was a team effort, but main server, Cody, was excellent. All the timing was spot on and we really enjoyed the progression of our dishes. Our craft cocktails were both excellent. Crab Rangoon was good with the rare inclusion of actual crab. We enjoyed the crispy Scallion Pancakes. The Veggie Momo were excellent. The sauces were not traditional Tibetan or Himalayan, but they were layered and yummy. The real star was the filling which had far more flavor than almost any veggie dumpling I've ever tasted. We finished with the Pad See Ew; the noodles were super tender. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and were glad to have experienced it. read more

One of our favorite Milwaukee restaurants, even before the Top Chef craze, and a go-to spot for visiting friends and family. Brought my husband's cousin and his wife from New York the other day. As Big Apple foodies, they were thoroughly impressed. We went with the Crab Rangoons, Dan Dan Noodles, and the Orange Chicken. Crab Rangoons were creamy and crabby, and the accompanying sauce was delicious. The Dan Dan Noodles are our favorite menu item, a must order for every visit. Served with tender noodles, ground pork, peanuts and the perfect amount of heat, do not miss this dish! The Orange Chicken is a solid choice, but was the least exciting dish for us this time around. Our wait staff was attentive, and quick to clear our empty plates for more space. The restaurant itself is small, but feels spacious. Love the Harry Potter Funko toys hidden in the decor. One or both of the Dans must be as big of a fan as I am! Overall, a great dinner choice for friends, family or a hot date. Hoping one of these times, Dan Jacobs will be in the kitchen so we can let him know how much we love this spot! As Bay View residents, we're hoping to get to their sister restaurant, Esterev soon as well. I can only imagine it's just as tasty! Thanks to Dan Dan for another fabulous meal out! read more
While DanDan does attempt to offer non-traditional American Chinese dishes (they have more than just Orange Chicken and Walnut Shrimp), I found the taste to be monotonous and repetitive throughout. My assessment is based on my encounters with the Mapo Tofu, Dan Dan Noodles, and Orange Chicken-- all of which exhibited a lack of diversity in seasonings and garnishes. It appears that the chefs have not thoroughly delved into the ingredients and nuances of these dishes. The execution feels superficial, as if the addition of Szechuan peppercorns and garnishes of scallions and cilantro across all their dishes is enough to signify authenticity to the Chinese cuisine. The rice that is served with the entrees came out cold which was really disappointing. This lack of variation left me craving more distinct flavors and a greater sense of culinary exploration. I would recommend dining elsewhere if you are looking for something more refined. read more
A great time at DanDan. The hostess was incredible - we showed up with no reservation on a busy night and they were able to find us a table very quickly and was very communicative and accommodating when we arrived. We ordered three appetizers to share - and those were the winner of the night. the chicken Bao buns - incredible, fluffy and crispy with lots of sauce. The pork peanut egg roll which had great crispy wrapper and the pork dumplings which were very fresh and flavorful. For mains, we shared the orange chicken and the shrimp pad see ew - both were okay. The bar was set very high by the appetizers. Ambiance was modern Asian and very trendy. Because everything is so fresh, they bring it out as it is ready, straight from the kitchen, making for a fun eating experience in courses. Will be back when I'm in Milwaukee again! read more

Just watched Dan win top chef at supper club elimination for his relish. Food was awesome and tasty. Service on point. When in Milwaukee a must stop. (Not exactly sure what the additional 5% for Employee Benefits added to the check is for.) read more

Highlights/Lowlights 1. Super Flavorful Food 2. Fun Ambiance 3. Be Aware of Spice Level We hadn't been to Dan Dan since pre-COVID and I'm not sure why! We made. Reservation about 2 weeks in advance for a party of 4 at 6:45pm on a Friday. I definitely recommend getting a reservation as Dan Dan was pretty packed. We were seated promptly when we arrived (major points!) and given waters right away. We are family style which is highly recommended (there are so many flavorful dishes and it's fun to try a variety!). We tried the cucumber salad, wings, bean pancakes, Kung Pow Chicken, Shrimp. Everything was fantastic. The shrimp (which I'm honestly usually hit or miss on) had this incredible sauce and candied walnuts on it. It was such a unique way to serve shrimp! The only issue we had is that there are some chili pods in the Kung Pow chicken that while flavorful are INSANELY hot. Like kind of ruin your appetite, gulp water for 20 mins hot. Might have been out bad for not reading the menu item closer but WOAH. The vibe of Dan Dan is energetic, kind of loud but FUN. I love places that feel lively! We can't wait to be back and feel like we missed out by waiting so long to come back! read more
I liked Dan Dan. If you're wanting Asian fusion food I'd recommend coming here. It's a great spot for a date night. Id call ahead of time and make reservations. You won't be getting authentic Chinese food but you'll be getting a good fusion of dishes. I'd recommend sharing to really get to taste multiple dishes. read more

Came here with two friends for dinner on a Sunday night. We made a reservation for 3 and were seated were right away by a nice man. We ordered our appetizer- crab Rangoons, which were delicious. Then ordered our entrees and were told they might come out at different times. Which is fine, normal for a little time between. It was 35 minutes between my meal and my friends noodles. When we asked if the food was almost ready the waitress was very rude, shrugging her shoulders and rolling her eyes saying they were REALLY busy. Honestly I wouldn't mind the wait if my food wasn't cold by the time my friends meals came out. They did give us a discount, but truthfully I wouldn't come back to sit down. Atmosphere: HUGE place, lots of seating indoors and out. I still recommend a reservation they are always busy. The bathrooms are always....wet? Water everywhere and toilet paper/paper towel scattering the floor and it's the weirdest paint job they obviously did themselves because there are paint smears and splatters all over the toilets. Food: DELICOUS. Seriously so good but the portions are on the smaller side and the price is definitely on the high side. Two beers, an appetizer, and two entrees set us back $100 and we left hungry. Staff: Knowledgeable and friendly. I've noticed both times a bit of a mix up on where orders are being delivered which is understandable with the amount of tables. Also note to the owners: PLEASE fix your website. The menu is so hard to read online, and its a super easy fix from your web designer that would take less than an hour of billable time to implement. We always ask for paper menus which is less than ideal with the whole covid fiasco. Would love to give this place one more shot and bump this up a few stars the next time I'm in town. read more

First of All- Highly recommend you make a Reservation. It seems to be super popular so that will def help. We got there early and sat at the bar had a drink before we got our table. Community Effort was mine and I loved it! Hubs had the 1971 and be really enjoyed it. As far as food goes, EVERYTHING was awesome. We ordered both styles of dumplings, chichen baos, fried rice with chicken and shrimp. The Mango creme brulee is by far the best creme brulee (with quite a twist) that I have ever had. Portions were great for all and it is like "tapas" so great for sharing and trying multiple things. read more

Does DanDan add MSG to their dishes?
I don't know if they do or not but I didn't have the usual msg feeling if there was.
Will you bring the hot and sour soup back soon? It's by far one of our favorites and all my boyfriend wanted after getting surgery :(
