I went here two days ago. Probably the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Everything tasted bad. We got a bunch of appetizers. The chicken came with some black sauce which was horrible. We just ate the fried chicken alone which had no taste. The Singapore noodles were so bad I couldn't eat it. I had some spicy drink called rise of the phoenix and it was so small and they shouldn't charge that much for a small size drink. Brussel sprouts didn't taste good. Sangria was horrible. They tried to make one but didn't taste good. We got the cookies and crème Brûlée was so bad because the custard had a sour taste. Cookies had some gel on it. Horrible. Mongolian beef didn't taste good either. We spent like 300 dollars and it was the worst tasting food. I want my money back!!!! You figure a server who sees you didn't eat much would be like is there something you didn't like?? But no they didn't say or do anything just brought the full Bill. Decided to go here on a Sunday evening after a MSO performance and waited until the doors opened. We were seated immediately, which was lucky since it wasn't long before the restaurant was full. Our server was quick and friendly, and the food was truly amazing. Our table of 3 shared 2 appetizers, 2 mains, and 1 dessert and were very satisfied. However, we did order an extra bowl of rice since the one served was rather small for us. The Smashed Cucumbers were served cool with crisp flavors. The black vinegar gave it the perfect tang with a little bit of spice, and the cilantro, well, it's cilantro, so it just makes everything better, in my opinion. The potstickers were good-sized and with well-balanced flavors. The taste of the ribs was evident right away with the foie gras, giving it a nice finish. The Happy Chicken was spicy and so good! If you like spice, I highly recommend it! The DanDan noodles also had a bit of spice, but not overwhelmingly so, and the peanuts (which I'm usually not a fan of in food) added a nice, subtle crunch. I've heard the service here can be hit or miss, but our server was fast and attentive, and our food came out quickly. NOTE: a 20% tip is added to your bill automatically. read more

Was very excited to come here after watching Top Chef, but I felt the food and our experience was just mediocre. The egg rolls were good but they were luke warm when we received them. The szechuan dumplings had a good flavor but the filling was a small amount. The walnut shrimp was my favorite dish, but when it said it was served with broccoli I expected more than 2 pieces. We have been wanting to try the house special 3 course Peking Duck, and we finally made it happen. It says it serves 2-3 but it's more like 4 people - it was so much food! We had 3 in our group and all had leftovers to take home. Definitely worth the $85 but you do have to order it a day in advance. It starts with a warm, salty and brothy wonton soup with...you guessed it, Duck, Foie Gras Dumplings, Scallions, and Bok Choy. The dumplings were heavenly. Course two is a beautifully presented Duck breast served with perfectly spongey scallion pancakes, House Pineapple Hoisin Sauce and Cucumbers / Radishes. Lastly...if you have any room left is the Duck leg chow fun noodles. The house-made Rice Noodles were phenomenal, you get to bust open your own Duck Egg, and it's smothered in Foie Gras with Scallion, Bok Choy, Tomato, Celery, and Leeks. We did get the mango crème brûlée which was HUGE, so fresh, so interesting, and a perfect way to round out this incredible dinner. Do this. How disappointing to go to Dan Dan for my birthday and have such a terrible experience. Everyone at our table was served except for me. As my family was already 1/2 way through their meal, I contacted our server Maria and asked her if she forgot to put in my order. She said "No, it's coming" and then walked away from the table without any explanation or apology. I was finally served my meal. I asked to see a manager to talk to them about my experience. They sent the owner over (one of the 'Dans', not the famous one, but the one that nobody likes). He was arrogant, had a smirk on his face, a stain in the middle of his shirt and it looked like he either drank too much or the gummy was just kicking in. He said "that's just how we do things, we bring it out when it's ready". No apology! I said the server didn't tell us that, and he shrugged his shoulders at me. We will never go back. My family and I are already spreading the word not to go to Dan Dan. If I were you, I'd pick a different place to eat. The food isn't that great to put up with their odd service. On a Milwaukee foodie adventure and first stop was DanDan. I loved watching Dan Jacobs cook on Top Chef and really wanted to taste his style of Asian fusion. It did not disappoint. Favorite bites were the smashed cucumber salad with black vinegar, the spicy pork dumplings and the Pad Seuw Shrimp! Service was polite, prompt and helpful. Really loved the front entrance. It's deceiving how many people fit inside, from outside it looks like a tiny little restaurant, not the case. It opens into pods or rooms of people. I had wanted to try DanDan for a bit (pre-Top Chef!) and was so thrilled that it exceeded my expectations! You always get a bit wary after a place gets a lot of hype... Anyhow, the place itself is super cute inside. Felt very warm and cozy on a cold, snowy night. I went with one friend and we opted to basically get one item from each column - Sesame Chicken Bao, Singapore Noodles, and General Tso's Cauliflower. I honestly can't decide what my favorite was! I loved, loved, loved the sauce on the bao buns (which were puffy and delicious and surprisingly huge). The pork in the Singapore Noodles was incredible too. It's Dry January so I got a mocktail and was pleased that it was only $6 when other restaurants charge $15 for NA drinks. It was the Company Refresher - super refreshing (true to name) with good body. Overall, a great experience and I'm excited to go back and try more. read more

Excellent!!! I admit I came here because I watched Top Chef Wisconsin and was impressed with Dan Jacobs' work. Four of us visited on a Monday night (get a reservation!) and every dish we had was incredible. Egg Rolls with a sweet and sour sauce, Sesame Chicken Bao that knocked our socks off, Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken (a bit high on salty taste, but not bad), General Tso's Cauliflower, and Walnut Shrimp were brought out as they were ready (not necessarily at the same time as we were advised) and everyone had some to take home. All dishes are served with rice and the servings are generous. It was my birthday and a toast (on the house) of Los Monteros was a really nice touch. We finished the meal with Mango Creme Brulee and left feeling fully satisfied and looking forward to our next visit. The location is off the busy area around Third Ward and the parking is on the street, free in areas and ample. The atmosphere is super comfortable, and I think they may offer outdoor dining but the days now are too hot so we just admired the flowers as we entered into the cool vibe inside. The sound level is great even when full, and there is a small bar area that I am sure is regularly busy. Casual and comfortable. All in all we had a great meal. Each dish was just slightly altered from the traditional and it was nice to have a few surprises as our dishes came out. My only downside was the server who really didn't listen well and was not showing any interest in her work. But we got all we needed and more than we expected. DanDan is not to be missed. read more

One of our favorite Milwaukee restaurants, even before the Top Chef craze, and a go-to spot for visiting friends and family. Brought my husband's cousin and his wife from New York the other day. As Big Apple foodies, they were thoroughly impressed. We went with the Crab Rangoons, Dan Dan Noodles, and the Orange Chicken. Crab Rangoons were creamy and crabby, and the accompanying sauce was delicious. The Dan Dan Noodles are our favorite menu item, a must order for every visit. Served with tender noodles, ground pork, peanuts and the perfect amount of heat, do not miss this dish! The Orange Chicken is a solid choice, but was the least exciting dish for us this time around. Our wait staff was attentive, and quick to clear our empty plates for more space. The restaurant itself is small, but feels spacious. Love the Harry Potter Funko toys hidden in the decor. One or both of the Dans must be as big of a fan as I am! Overall, a great dinner choice for friends, family or a hot date. Hoping one of these times, Dan Jacobs will be in the kitchen so we can let him know how much we love this spot! My friend and I visited DanDan on the heels of Top Chef's spotlight on it. We were surprised to see Cheftestant Dan himself at the reception desk, wrangling diner seating. He was very nice. We were seated at a two top along the wall. The decor is mainly what you'd expect from a Chinese concept place - lots of red and black. It's chic, but a little on the nose. The space is also extremely loud. We couldn't hear each other from across the small table for most of the meal. Service was a team effort, but main server, Cody, was excellent. All the timing was spot on and we really enjoyed the progression of our dishes. Our craft cocktails were both excellent. Crab Rangoon was good with the rare inclusion of actual crab. We enjoyed the crispy Scallion Pancakes. The Veggie Momo were excellent. The sauces were not traditional Tibetan or Himalayan, but they were layered and yummy. The real star was the filling which had far more flavor than almost any veggie dumpling I've ever tasted. We finished with the Pad See Ew; the noodles were super tender. While DanDan does attempt to offer non-traditional American Chinese dishes (they have more than just Orange Chicken and Walnut Shrimp), I found the taste to be monotonous and repetitive throughout. My assessment is based on my encounters with the Mapo Tofu, Dan Dan Noodles, and Orange Chicken-- all of which exhibited a lack of diversity in seasonings and garnishes. It appears that the chefs have not thoroughly delved into the ingredients and nuances of these dishes. The execution feels superficial, as if the addition of Szechuan peppercorns and garnishes of scallions and cilantro across all their dishes is enough to signify authenticity to the Chinese cuisine. The rice that is served with the entrees came out cold which was really disappointing. This lack of variation left me craving more distinct flavors and a greater sense of culinary exploration. I would recommend dining elsewhere if you are looking for something more refined. read more

A great time at DanDan. The hostess was incredible - we showed up with no reservation on a busy night and they were able to find us a table very quickly and was very communicative and accommodating when we arrived. We ordered three appetizers to share - and those were the winner of the night. the chicken Bao buns - incredible, fluffy and crispy with lots of sauce. The pork peanut egg roll which had great crispy wrapper and the pork dumplings which were very fresh and flavorful. For mains, we shared the orange chicken and the shrimp pad see ew - both were okay. The DanDan noodles were too salty with pork that was overly cooked and dry. The Singapore noodles were coated with gritty curry powder that immediately left me with a headache. We are family style which is highly recommended (there are so many flavorful dishes and it's fun to try a variety!). We tried the cucumber salad, wings, bean pancakes, Kung Pow Chicken, Shrimp. Everything was fantastic. The shrimp (which I'm honestly usually hit or miss on) had this incredible sauce and candied walnuts on it. It was such a unique way to serve shrimp! The only issue we had is that there are some chili pods in the Kung Pow chicken that while flavorful are INSANELY hot. Like kind of ruin your appetite, gulp water for 20 mins hot. Came here with two friends for dinner on a Sunday night. We made a reservation for 3 and were seated were right away by a nice man. We ordered our appetizer- crab Rangoons, which were delicious. Then ordered our entrees and were told they might come out at different times. Which is fine, normal for a little time between. It was 35 minutes between my meal and my friends noodles. When we asked if the food was almost ready the waitress was very rude, shrugging her shoulders and rolling her eyes saying they were REALLY busy. Honestly I wouldn't mind the wait if my food wasn't cold by the time my friends meals came out. They did give us a discount, but truthfully I wouldn't come back to sit down. Atmosphere: HUGE place, lots of seating indoors and out. I still recommend a reservation they are always busy. The bathrooms are always....wet? Water everywhere and toilet paper/paper towel scattering the floor and it's the weirdest paint job they obviously did themselves because there are paint smears and splatters all over the toilets. Food: DELICOUS. Seriously so good but the portions are on the smaller side and the price is definitely on the high side. Two beers, an appetizer, and two entrees set us back $100 and we left hungry. Staff: Knowledgeable and friendly. I've noticed both times a bit of a mix up on where orders are being delivered which is understandable with the amount of tables. Also note to the owners: PLEASE fix your website. The menu is so hard to read online, and its a super easy fix from your web designer that would take less than an hour of billable time to implement. We always ask for paper menus which is less than ideal with the whole covid fiasco. Would love to give this place one more shot and bump this up a few stars the next time I'm in town. read more

Full disclosure: I love me some DanDan. My visit last night did not disappoint in several ways: easy to make reservations, confirmation email, reminder, and prompt, courteous greeting at the door. Our server was attentive but not intrusive. Dumplings and two dinner entrees were delicious, the shrimp especially so. The beef was a little harder to judge because there was so little of it in a sea of onion and red peppers. Still, a solid 4-5 star experience. Then there's the restaurant itself. It needs a cleaning. I'll skip the details about the common areas. The men's room, however, cannot be glossed over. I've been in worse in filling stations on state highways, but I've also been in far cleaner. The walls were dirty; sinks, grimy; mirror and air freshener bottles, caked with oily gunk. I'll avoid graphic details of the rest of it.
