I don't normally re review places but I haven't left a review in 13 years and I have been there many times since but not lately because there is a Chinese place close to work that I have been going to out if convince. I thought today that I would visit my old friend and even though I have been around the world with the menu that dam general Taos chicken dinner combination is my favorite. The general Taos chicken combination comes with chicken fried rice and an egg roll. The chicken is always big moist chunks of tender velveted chicken which I can't tell if it's white or dark meat because of the velveting process but I like it. The egg roll isn't the tiny ones that became the norm over the years and it's super average like 95 % of Asian restaurants now, not like years past when the egg roll was a signature staple in Asian restaurants and they made really good ones. The combination chicken fried rice is that kind you find on most combination menus, not the main dish dark fried rice full of meat and veggies but just enough to accompany the main dish. Overall it's tasty enough and better than the average neighborhood Chinese restaurant and for a dinner combination that was 2 1/2 pounds of food for $13.50, price vs quality vs taste it's a winner. read more

I ordered take out again and the tofu did not taste fresh and one piece had something expired in it not sure what so I had to throw it out. I ordered the home style tofu which was listed as spicy and tasted mild. The veggie lo mein was tasty with lots of veggies but heavy on the sauce and the large size was smaller than the last time I ordered takeout from here. read more

I've been craving dim sum and stumbled upon J.J. Chen's Eatery online! I ordered a few items for takeout: stir fried turnip cakes, chicken feet, and steamed pork ribs with black bean sauce. The stir fried turnip cakes and chicken feet were my favorite! The portion was good for the price and they were both super flavorful. The steamed pork ribs were fine, but I definitely want to try other dishes next time. Aside from dim sum, they also offer other dishes like pan fried noodles and salt and pepper squid! Solid four stars reflect dimsum menu. It has been a while, so I tried their Mongolian beef and mala pork again... but I was not wowed. Mongolian beef is still VERY onion heavy, and not the dark brown dish with green onions anymore. IT's still tasty, but definitely feels more Americanized than authentic. Mala pork lunch special is not the real authentic Mala dish. Not for me. I asked for hot. But wasn't. But we had American friends with us and they loved the dish, more than the Mongolian beef. So up to your palate! Dimsum Pork and shrimp and chive dumplings were yummy! Looked very home made. Turnip cake with xo sauce is still delicious. Hacao is ok, but not fantastic. Date of delivery: April 10, 2025 One of my coworkers is a huge fan of JJ Chen's and often asks if I want anything when she's ordering. If I'm having a moment of weakness I will agree and get the Sesame Chicken. It's a decent Sesame Chicken--not the best (Hong Ahn Palace or Jing's) but also not the worst (Emperor of China) that I've had, squarely in the middle. Also disappointing is that if you pay cash at delivery, the driver not only has no change, but also does not speak English so whatever you have available to give him is what he's going to get! read more

We have not eaten there for quite awhile and decided to try them yesterday, 7/25/26 a bad mistake. Pan fried shrimp, pork and chive dumplings burnt, the chives were even burnt. Three fried sesame balls two of them burnt. Stuffed eggplant was a little overcooked but alright. We've been ordering here for years. And every single time, our order comes with whatever liquid we have in our order in the bottom of the bag. Be a gravy, or whatever it would be. By the time you add up their fees, they've gotten so expensive we have pretty much stopped ordering from them. If I want to pay $50 for takeout food for a few items, I'll go to a good restaurant. While the food is OK, the way that it comes to you is unacceptable. The paper bag is always soaked through. Gross. read more

We ordered food here over the holidays after seeing several positive reviews about their dim sum offerings. The dim sum was excellent, very tasty and flavorful. Which led us to order again on another occasion to try their regular menu items. This time around, we were slightly disappointed. The flavors felt a bit flat, especially with the seafood dishes, which we were hoping would be more bold and well-seasoned. For reference, both orders were takeout. We recently starting getting take out at J.J. Chen's and were very happy with the menu items we ordered. The food was tasty and prices were reasonable. We'd gotten take out 3 or 4 times and it was great. Unfortunately, we can't say the same about our last visit. We ordered a couple of meals from the lunch menu via beyond menu for take out (Chicken with black bean and garlic sauce and Chicken with Szechuan garlic sauce.) Mine had about 8 tiny black beans, not the black bean sauce I expected. Neither had much garlic and neither was particularly hot (spice-wise). We also did not get a spring rolls or crab rangoon which the menu said we would get. The texture of the chicken was off and it didn't even taste like chicken. After a couple of bites, neither of us wanted to continue eating. We were very disappointed with this experience as other meals we had previously were always delicious and flavorful. We ended up tossing both meals. Unfortunately, I'll have a tough time convincing my husband to go back and give it one more try. JJ Chen's is one of the best Chinese spots in the milwuakee area! The owner really prides himself in his food. As my sister and I were the only customers at the time in the shop he came and talked to us. Really friendly guy! The food was high quality and extremely tasty! Of all the places I have tried in Chicago I will say JJ Chens is on my list of places for Chinese I wi good to for food. The service was best I have ever seen at any place. I have been meaning to try this place for quite some time! It is just in a strip mall on the NE corner of Hwy 100 and Oklahoma. It is not very big inside. 8 tables total and it appears most people get takeout or delivery. I just walked in and ordered, but in the future I will order ahead. I did like how they asked what spice level I would like. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken and a chicken egg roll. I ordered spice level 4 and I could go to the 5, but I like spicy. Just got takeout from here last night - 45 minutes before they closed and they were still willing to deliver. And they were so fast! So 10/10 on customer service! I've gotten takeout from here before and it is always exactly what I'm looking for. When you think of Chinese take out, this is it. We got the classics - sesame chicken, general tso's chicken, eggs rolls, and crab Rangoon. Everything was hot upon arrival and seemed freshly made! This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. The ambiance is what you would expect of a small family owned restaurant that often does take out. However, their food and the speed with which you get it is amazing. It is absolutely my go to place for when I am looking for some quick Chinese food. I have loved all of their dishes I have tried so far. They are kind and respectful, so I am pretty happy with the service overall as well. I thought I would try this place instead of my go to for Chinese. I ordered delivery and it came 30 minutes after the expected delivery time and the food was cold. The guy who delivered apologized for it being late and said he's not the driver, he's a server and they asked him to deliver it after someone noticed it had been sitting there. (not sure why he shared all that with me, the tip unfortunately had already been included). The food was ok, definitely not as good as my go to. That's what I get for trying someplace new. read more

A Cantonese here to support the only dim sum restaurant in Milwaukee! I've always liked getting dim sum here. The quality and the variety are not the best that I've had for sure - but still enjoyed their fast service and hot and flavorful dim sums. Definitely satisfy the craving. My favorites are the Steamed Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, Stuffed Tofu Skin with Pork & Shrimp and Stir-Fried Turnip Cake with XO Sauce. The Preserved Egg with Pork Congee is great in texture but sometimes lacks some salt - not a big deal I will just add some to adjust a bit. The classic Shu Mai often lacks some flavors too but they are all so big and meaty and worth the price! Overall, I hope Cantonese restaurants like JJ Chen could stay open on Milwaukee! read more

This small eatery may not look like much when you first enter, but it brought back so many of my own childhood memories of when my mother used to own a restaurant! Definitely your neighborhood family-owned and operated spot, but that is never a bad thing! I was craving dim sum and this place seemed to be one of the few places in the area that served it, so I HAD to stop by. I really only grabbed a few things because I was saving my stomach for the rest of my food adventure, but after getting a taste, I definitely regret not getting more! We ordered some typical dim sum dishes: turnip cake, har gow, siu mai, and tried out the chicken feet as well. Har gow and chicken feet were standard. It definitely was nothing special and felt like I've had to same at other places. However, their siu mais were HUGE. I was so shocked to see these babies so large and juicy. Tasted great and had good amounts of shrimp and pork. The turnip cakes were also incredible! Not your typical style of turnip cakes that are white with brown crispy pieces around the edges. They are addicting bite-sized pieces that are so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I have never had turnip cakes like this and am definitely a fan of this style! Since it was my first time ordering I relied on previous reviews and pictures, and settled on: shrimp crepe rolls, stir fried turnip cakes, Szechuan chicken wings, pork dumplings and satay beef chow fun. I was slightly skeptical after reading the reviews, but to my surprise everything was delicious! Jj chens has always been one of our favorite places to go to. Since the pandemic, we've been ordering take out. Their food is authentic and we love their dimsum and beef noodle soups. However, I hate to place a two star for them and the only reason is because the food quality has gone down quite a bit. Our last order, the beef tasted old and in our take out bag (between the paper bag and plastic bag) came crawling out a baby roach. My husband and I didn't see the roach until we were done eating and were in the process of cleaning up. Jj chens have had our business for more than 5 years and as each year passes by, it's slowly deteriorating. Service seems rushed and the host out cashier lady always seems annoyed with a rude attitude. We miss the old quality and service of this place but unfortunately, our last order has ended our love for this place. The place is in an unassuming strip mall on Oklahoma and walking into here you won't even know of all the yummuness that is about to hit your taste buds. The place gets a lot of online orders so we had the pleasure of being the only people dinning in. The dimsum menu is very well stocked and the owner herself comes out and feeds you with a warm attitude and motherly suggestions. We got the beef congee, stir fried shrimp rice crepe with Xo sauce , steamed pork buns, stuffed eggplant with shrimp and stuffed tofu skin with pork and shrimp. I also got hot tea that was so soothing. All thr food was delicious and the serving size definitely was a lot. This review is all about value for your dollar. If that's what you're looking for, J.J. Chen's is probably not for you. I had a little time to spare on a Saturday so I stopped in for egg rolls (it's my never-ending quest to find the best ones around). While looking at the menu I noticed they had a regular egg roll, which could be gotten as shrimp & pork or just chicken, and crispy shrimp rolls that come as an order of four. It was explained to me that the crispy shrimp rolls have a thinner wrap and contain just shrimp. Feeling adventurous, I ordered both the crispy shrimp rolls and one chicken egg roll. The chicken egg roll was your run of the mill grocery-store-freezer-section-style egg roll that sadly too many Chinese restaurants sell. Absolutely disgusting to taste and certainly not worth $1.45 each when places like China East sell egg rolls with fresh ingredients. The crispy shrimp rolls tasted as you'd expect given that they was just shrimp in a wrap. My issue is that they were no bigger than the size of my finger length AND diameter wise. I'm providing a picture on Yelp for reference. An order of these costs $4.50, which I find to be stupid for how small they are. Other food at J.J. Chen's might be worth ordering, but that's up to you to decide. If you can't do an egg roll right, you're not for me. read more

3.5 Stars I apologize in advance for my lack of photos but we were too hungry after a day of moving to take any. I thought I would order Chinese Take Out to thank my movers and JJ Chens was a first for all of us. We ordered an assortment of chinese fried chicken, crab rangoons, orange beef, general tso chicken, mapo tofu, chicken chow fun, spicy szechuan chicken and clams with black bean sauce. I was disappointed in our appetizer selection. The chinese fried chicken was literally plain chicken nuggets and sweet and sour sauce. It was basically sweet and sour chicken with the sauce on the side. Pass. The crab rangoons had very little filling and were over fried. Another pass. The stand out entrees were the orange beef and clams with black bean sauce. We all loved the orange beef - best orange beef texture we've tried. The clams with black bean sauce was a unique menu item and very flavorful but messy to eat. I would highly recommend these two items. The mapo tofu was a miss. It was not your, "traditional" mapo tofu. It had a light sauce and filled with celery. The general tso chicken was very chewy. The chicken chow fun was fine. Nothing special. The spicy szechuan chicken had a good kick but I felt like the chicken pieces weren't even chicken and more so batter. I was pleasantly surprised that with an order of $35 you get a free chicken fried rice. I also recommend ordering a couple hot pepper oils for .25 if you like to add heat to your meals. I will be back to try their dim sum menu and other menu items I am curious about. I feel like JJ Chens has some amazing menu items that I need to discover. read more

So I ordered this through Door Dash and it took about twenty minutes to get. I ordered the chicken fried rice and an order of Chinese fried chicken. The chicken fried rice was okay, although I thought pretty bland. I think it needed more soy sauce but that is personal preference. The Chinese fried chicken was delicious and it was a pretty good sized portion. The food was better then most Chinese food places in the area and I would eat there again, but I would probably only get the Chinese fried chicken. I would only order the chicken fried rice again if I had more then two packets of soy sauce. The Chinese fried chicken did come with a good sized portion of I think sweet and sour sauce as well. People always mention how delicious the Mongolian beef is that so that was a definite must try. They also offer dim sum, which I am a huge fan! I love eggplant so I had to try the stuffed eggplant along with the stirfried turnip cakes with XO sauce. Holy mackerel was the food absolutely delicious! Some of the better cheap Chinese I have had in Milwaukee along with Lucky Lius. JJ Chen's currently does not allow dine in and online ordering is the preferred method. Contactless pick up is available. Pretty wide range menu offering many good options. General Tso is very high level and only $6.25 for their lunch special. I asked for it extra spicy and got fried rice along with it. Delicious sauce which provided some moderate heat with chicken nice and crispy. Rice was nice and fluffy and the egg roll was solid yet unspectacular. Very good portions and one of the best bangs for your buck in the city. Definitely worth checking out for lunch or if in the suburbs. read more

Pros: Clean, cheap. Owners are nice, so I don't mind giving them money. Cons: Not that tasty. Not bad, but... the food is adequite. This is right by my house and on occasion I'll swing by. I've eaten here a good half dozen to dozen times so it's time for a review. JJ Chen's is very much a midwestern version of Americanized chinese food- it's not too far from Sze Chuan on National and if you want real chinese food go there. If you want american Chinese, this isn't a bad spot to get it and honestly the food is better and the people nicer than a lot of the other little chinese shops in town. It's a bit bland, even the spicy dishes, and a little on the greasy side (I'm thinking of the egg rolls, rangoon, and chow mein in particular). I always add soy sauce because I feel like it's not quite salty enough, which I figure is because the cooks know most people add soy sauce. The food is perfect if you're drunk, hung over, or sick- I've had my wife get me their food when I had a cold, for sure. Or if you just have a craving for fried rice- but as someone who loves real chinese food, it does not scratch that itch for me. Wow we loved JJ's! How have we not discovered you before?! It's not to say we were skeptical going in, but we were very curious how this dim sum place was going to be! It's the only dim sum place in the area and we truly enjoyed it. I'm going to be honest, I have not had much dim sum, so I don't have a ton to compare it to. But what we had, we loved. We ordered the shrimp, pork, siu mai, and the bbq. They give you a sweet and sour sauce and a mustard sauce right off the start, but you have to ask for the dumpling sauce. The sweet and sour is really good. All of the dumplings were good. I don't care for the "bun" dim sum, but that's a personal preference. The service was interesting. The lady who seemed in charge was very nice! Our actual server wasn't the greatest, but she didn't affect our experience in any way. Because we loved the dim sum, we ordered actual Chinese food to take home. The general tso's and lo mein are really good. I did really enjoy the fried rice too. Oh and I loved the shrimp and pork eggroll! I would most definitely order that again. There was plenty of parking as it was in a strip mall. It was easy to find.
