I don't understand how this place has 3.5 stars. The food is always amazing, it comes out hot and fast, the service is always spot on, and it's always full in there. It's perfectly lit, very cozy. It's not super fancy but it's way nicer than your average Chinese restaurant, overall a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere. We came in on a Saturday evening, calling ahead for a reservation. We shared a crab Rangoon, and got Mongolian beef and crispy chili chicken to share, both were excellent. The server suggested that we add bok choy to our order, and that was very delicious as well. I've been missing Jing's, and they were closed fo4 three months, while they visited family in China, so I was happy to get last night! They've been open 15 years! I wanted to order 8 menu items, but I used a little sekf control and ordered 3 and my friend ordered 2, and we shared everything, so that worked out alright. We started with the Scallion Pancakes, and they were amazing! Crisp, soft, chewy, with a buttery flavor from the oil. We LOVED them! The Guotie (pronounced go-TAY) are essentially pork pan-fried dumplings, which are always a good idea. These were on the former secret menu, but dumplings are on the current menu, so order them pan-fried and you should be set. The Shanghai Eggplant is a colorful and delicious dish and served with steamed rice. All the entrees include steamed rice. We ordered 3 entrees, so they served is a larger bowl of rice, rather than 3 separate cups of rice. The steamed fish with scallion and ginger was tender and the sauce was savory with a hint of sweetness. It was cooked perfectly! The Shanghai Duck has crispy skin and is served with some pieces having bone in them, which they told me up front, and I'm telling you now, and a side of sauce that I believe was plum sauce. The duck was good, but the sauce took it to another level of YUM! Hard to pick a favorite entree, but maybe the Shanghai Eggplant only because it was presented differently than I expected and I loved the color contrasts. The Scallion Pancakes are a MUST! I finally found out where this place was when I was looking for something else. There is, in fact, authentic Chinese food in downtown Milwaukee, you just have to look for it a little bit. It's across from Shake Shack and Aloha Poke. There is signage you can see from the street, but if you were just walking up Water you wouldn't know unless you were looking for it. I came to try the buffet but they apparently don't offer it on Saturdays. That's fine because they did have the Chinese menu. The names of the dishes are in English, so it's not intimidating if you don't know Chinese. I got the Ma Po tofu and then an egg drop soup and some jasmine tea. The soup was nothing unexpected but it was good. I kind of wanted to try the hot and sour because of the reviews, but I didn't want something too similar to the Ma Po, flavor-wise. The Ma Po tofu was really good. I didn't detect any meat but the dish wasn't missing any flavor. The sauce soaked into the rice nicely but there wasn't too much of it, and it was pleasantly spicy but not mouth-burning. The space is small. It's not fancy but it's pleasant and the staff are really nice. They're also one of the few places around to offer soup dumplings, so maybe one day I'll get the courage to try those. read more

I think what keeps this restaurant busy its convenient location to those who live in Third Ward. The restaurant has been recently closed for a few month so I was really looking forward to trying it for the first time. I have tried numerous Chinese restaurants in the area and they vary. Some taste like Chinese fast food but overall still a nice garlicky flavor and some with some higher end flavors. Some have lunch specials, some have one size, some of the more carry out focused restaurants sell quart and pint. So which one is Jing's on a Saturday evening? Well, I was extremely disappointed. We had carry out, I ordered the chicken in garlic sauce and the other chicken was sweet and sour. We also ordered spring rolls. Well, the size of my garlic chicken order was smaller than a lunch special in some local Chinese restaurants. The flavor was OK. It is not that I need endless left overs, but not feeling constrained about having seconds should not be a sentiment. Or if they specialize in small portions, great, but the prices should reflect somewhat the portion that you are getting. I was getting roughly $7 worth of food for for $14. Understood that rents are higher in the Third Ward and so on, but this price differential is somewhat absurd. No, the don't need to have the same price and portion as another more outlying area, but again, this was a huge difference. The spring rolls also were not interesting, they tasted as if they were out of a frozen Costco bag. They also forgot to give us the hot mustard. It is a pity that such a great location has to be a disappointment. Did they have an off night and run out of food? I doubt it based on some of the other reviews. read more

A gloomy option for subpar chinese carry out. It used to offer dine in, but doesn't appear to now. Anyway, i couldn't imagine eating in the dark, empty space. First warning sign was that I was apparently the only order at 6 pm on a busy restaurant night. As for the food, yikes. The fried rice with pork included ham chunks. How weird. I know ham is pork, but cmon. The other dishes were 1970s versions of Chinese food. Tasteless, unappealing. We ate a little and tossed the rest. Make it taste better! You're selling food! First things first, I want to say that my review will be reflective of their AUTHENTIC Chinese Menu, which may be the disconnect between my 5/5 and the overall average rating if this place. If you're looking for authentic Chinese options (which is hard to come by in Milwaukee) then this is definitely a good option and I would recommend you trying it out! If you're looking for orange chicken you can read the next review because this one aint it I came here with a friend and the service was friendly, you could tell the food was freshly made to order, and it was delicious! I got the Malaysian Curry Tofu and the Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). Both dishes were really good! The curry sauce was SO good, there's just something so satisfying dunking your rice in good curry y'know? The Xiao long bao I could tell were freshly steamed because they were nice and hot in the steamer basket and took 15-20 mins for it to come out. The broth and filling was good! To my knowledge this is the only place that I've been able to find that has soup dumplings, other than MomoMee, and this place's was MUCH better. Checked with website to verify their hours and then gathered a lunch order for the office. When I called to place the order, the restaurant's voicemail advised that they do not open until 330 p.m. for takeout and delivery orders. That would have been helpful information to have on their website and would have saved me a whole lot of trouble. I had to quickly find another place that could make $75 worth of food as to not have a band of pitchfork-toting co-workers at my office door. Jing's failure is China Gourmet's gain! read more

(Who's abilities failed on the egg rolls) This can't be fresh. Then I get home and open sesame. Why is it so light? Why isn't the container full? It was 15 bucks! Boo. 15 bucks at a Chinese joint should be two meals. Also, it was shrimp and onions and green peppers. That is it for veggies. Onions, the cheapest thing you can buy and the thing I dislike most - bell peppers. You know ... Might not be a "terrible" idea to list out the ingredients in the menu 'cause if I knew this I would not have ordered it or asked for different vegetables. Fresh Chinese? Sounds like an oxymoron but Jing's definitely delivers and physically delivers to Bay View (my neighborhood). Until last week I had only had delivery from Jing's. I went there with a friend to try to the lunch buffet. Typically a Chinese lunch buffet is not fresh and tends to be greasy. The buffet was not huge but had some great quality items. The spicy dishes were actually spicy as stated which is not typical. One of my favorite entrees is their rice noodle with beef. The noodles are made fresh and the beef is done to perfection. I have had other dishes but this is definitely my favorite. The only downside is that the prices are a little bit higher than most places; however, you get what you pay for in freshness. Also, like any good Chinese restaurant they have a Chinese menu which is always the most authentic. read more

Stopped in here for the lunch buffet with some friends at work. This was actually our second attempt. The first time we went we had a group of seven and didn't realize there was such limited seating. This time we planned ahead and made reservations. I'm really glad we went! I generally don't care for buffets. The food is usually not kept hot enough and the food is usually bland. Not the case at Jing's! Everything was properly hot and very flavorful. It was a smaller buffet but everything was delicious! I especially liked the Singapore noodles and the chicken wings. The hot and sour soup, which is my favorite soup, was also quite good. They also had two other soups on the buffet, egg drop and a tofu vegetable, but I didn't try them because the hot and sour was so good! I will definitely be back for lunch and would love to try this place for dinner someday. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with Jing's. I had never had it before, but it came recommend as a good Chinese takeout place in the Third Ward. We ordered it to go, and the food was ready within 20 minutes. I got the vegetable fried rice which was excellent!! Not too salty and a decent amount of vegetables (could've had more, but that's just my personal preference). The size was perfect for a single serving; I was very hungry so was able to finish the entire thing myself. It is reasonably priced (about $10 for this), which is worth it to me for getting good quality food. The location seemed clean which also made it worthwhile. I will defiantly be back! read more

This place recently opened up in Milwaukee and we wanted to try it out! The crab Rangoon's are really really good and the food. I've had the Kung Pao chicken and the sesame chicken. They both were really good. They come with white rice and not fried. The Kung Pao isn't as spicy as I thought it would be. They tax and charge each item when you order here and charge for sweet and sour sauce, so order that ahead of time with your order if you want it. I've picked up food here and I've also had delivery. I've had deliveries multiple times from here and the delivery driver was BEYOND rude and disrespectful. The owner is a good deliverer but the young male employee we had was horrible, other than that it's a good place for Chinese food. Especially the crab ragoons. read more

Came here with a friend because we saw that they had a lunch buffet. Upon entering, the place looked very classy. However, as a vegetarian I would say there aren't the best options. The soups are great, rice is good and the nnoodles are good. But they could whip up some general tso's tofu or some garlic broccoli so there can be something that can be eaten with the rice. It was especially bland when I went back to eating it after the spicy tofu house special. The entire meal was $20+ which seems extremely high for both the portion size and quality of the meal provided. I think you could find better bang for your buck elsewhere. Best Chinese I've had yet in Milwaukee, good enough to quit trying places I haven't yet, this is it for me. Have had delivery to east side near UWM a few times, they've gotten there as quick as 20 min from ordering and never longer than they said it would take. I've tried the beef & broccoli, sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken and everything has been fantastic. We were hungry for Chinese food and staying downtown Milwaukee for a concert and mini-vacation and decided to order in after running around all day. Jings was recommended to us as a good option. They had delivery which was terrific! The person on the phone was friendly and helpful, and very efficient which I always appreciate :) The delivery came pretty fast after we ordered (about 30 minutes) and the food was hot :) We ordered the spring rolls (crunchy but not our favorite item), Crab Rangoon (good), and the Potstickers (excellent!). We also ordered the Cashew Chicken (could have been good but actually had no flavor at all but plenty of sauce...not sure what happened there), and Mongolian beef (which was pretty tasty). Overall, it helped with our craving, but needed a bit of work on flavoring. So this is interesting. I just dined here and I am now reading the reviews. Many people comment that this is standard Chinese food. Before we went to Jing's I looked at the pictures and noticed the soup dumplings and Zah Jiang Noodles so I asked about them. Low and behold, yes they had both and it was not on the menu because they were both on the "Chinese" menu. Yes please. Give me items off the Chinese menu. The Soup Dumplings were made in house and as good as NYC Chinatown. All of our food was fresh, authentic and delicious including the Kung Pao Chicken. We also had the Spring Rolls which were the freshest rolls we've ever had. I suggest the owners print the Chinese menu in English and give it to every table. This is the best choice in Milwaukee for authentic Shanghai style food! The soup dumplings are a delicious appetizer. They are dumplings with soup sealed inside - be patient or you will burn your tongue. My family always gets 2 or 3 entrees to share family style since we can never decide on just one item. The Jing's special with shrimp is our favorite dish. You can't go wrong with the Ma Po tofu dish. Ask for chili sauce if you want to heat things up. I've done carry out for lunch and that turned out ok. Dining for diner was the best experience I've been able get out of Jings. Food was good as was the service. They were really slow that night - maybe that played into things. I am NOT happy with this delivery I just got from them. I asked for vegetable lo mein, not bok choy lo mein. It's overly peppery too!
