The food at the buffet was very tasty but the price is outrageous. Not only that they add a " wellness fee " of 5% to the bill. No mention of it anywhere not any explanation. I asked the server and she said it's to help pay for the employees health insurance. WHAT? Since when do customers pay for employee benefits? Maybe the greedy owners could skim some of the profits to pay for their employees. So the buffet is $ 30 + wellness fee Then you need to add on tip. So we tried Dan Dan Noodles (takeout) on a whim last week while we were at Broken Bat Brewing company (this brewery doesn't have food but they encourage people to bring their own/order food) and let me be the 1000th person to tell you how awesome their Singapore Street noodles are!!! This is the BEST Singapore Street noodles in Milwaukee, prove me wrong! Definitely reminded me of the street noodles from Wee nam kee on Thompson road or Uncle Chicken Rice in the Bedok Marketplace in Singapore. Their dumplings were kinda chewy and dry but full of flavor. The chilli sauce is a firecracker. Liked the Dan Dan noodles with the peanut Dan Dan sauce but definitely make sure you get a mild/medium spice level if you do not have the built-in tolerance. It's like the country club ~ add a 20% fee to your bill and THEN add a tip. Just like the club but no pool, golf, or any other service, other than typical restaurant service. Dang. Maybe I'm just getting old and cheap. Maybe I'm not up to the times, but is this normal? Is it normal now for places to charge you 20% 'service fee' on your bill and THEN you tip your server on top of that? My fault. I should have read the website when we booked tonight. It's front and center so it's not a secret, but I don't get it. I do understand that the nation can't find good help and sometimes paying people more helps (sometimes treating your employees better helps too). But I'm not used to a 20% fee and I won't be returning. Yes, I tipped the server on top of this b/c it's not her fault, but she was SUPER lackluster herself. No smiles, Gave you the feeling you were bothering her. Still tipped her because... you know. That's what you do, but good grief. I paid enough in service and tip tonight. Menu: No menu.. Dumplings, Salad, noodles, chicken, and one more thing. All really good. Bill comes. Now the server has time to talk to us. She starts telling us about the 20% is for 'the house' and anything else goes directly to the server. Thank you for taking the time to hang out at our table and talk AND smile for a minute. Got it. She leaves and we look at the bill. $17 for the house and more for the server. How much do you tip a server when 20% was just given 'to the house?" I did about 13% off the sub total. I hope that was enough. This said, I'm done with this place. Can't do it. Good for Dan Dan if they can continue finding people that will support those fees. I felt like I was at the county club with no club to go with it. Didn't like it. I'm old school Milwaukee. We're thrifty people. So if they can fill their place with these fees and make it work for them, good on them. I will be bowing out and watching see how it works. The staff was friendly, and the environment was nice. However, every dish was too salty or too oversaturated with sauce. The dishes were too complex, which prohibited you from appreciating any one flavor. Overall, way too salty! No one at my table could finish their meal because of the sodium levels. The service and staff here is truly amazing. I came in without a reservation as my other dinner plans fell through. Here they were able to seat me right away in the bar area which was already off to a good start. I was served by Matt (who was seriously the greatest) and I will have to be returning because of how awesome he took care of us. The drinks we had were fabulous and the food was pretty good as well. The crab rangoons were a fan favorite of course! The dandan noodles and happy chicken were also very good. It was a good variety of food to enjoy. I wish I had gotten more to try but the food is a bit pricey for it being shared dishes. We wanted to grab more to share but limited it due to pricing. Overall, you have to try this place. Ordered takeout during my first time in Milwaukee. Around $50 for 3 items. Thai pork bao, dumplings, and kimchi pancakes. Very small portions. Thai pork bao: never had a bao with that much garlic before. Overpowered the whole thing. Dumplings: Were good but a bit cold. Not sure if they were supposed to be cold. Solid Chinese food in a hip, upscale location, serving plates of dim sum, noodles and stir-fry in a warm and inviting space. We sampled a few different apps and main courses. We started with the Sichuan Pork Dumplings. The chili oil gave it a nice spice that wasn't overwhelming and made for a very flavorful dish. We also shared one of the house specialties - General Tso's Cauliflower and boy was that a great choice! Great taste and made for a great app to share before our main dishes. The DanDan noodles was a filling dish full of spaghetti style noodles in a peanut flavored sauce. Was a solid choice. Our favorite dish was the Beef Chow Fun. Flat noodles with chunks of flavorful beef and a medley of other spices that was delicious. They are doing a great job during the pandemic of being safe - all the waitstaff wear masks and they have partitions between tables. Worth a visit but there are other more authentic options that I would try before returning here. read more

I visited recently in restaurant twice over the past 2 months and the food is still just as amazing as always. I always do the General Tsos cauliflower because it's my favorite thing on the menu but I also loved the chicken bao appetizer and the Mongolian beef entree recently. I love that they have N/A options on the menu from Untitled. The only reason I am going 4 stars is because of the awkwardness of the 20% service charge plus ask for extra tip. As a previous service industry worker I tip 20% minimum, always more for good service. But something about the service charge handling here is awkward and makes it feel like they are asking for you to pay the service charge plus tip the server on top of that (double tip). Like the service charge doesn't go to the servers but anything extra you tip will so if you had good service you should tip double... not sure if this is the intention but having been there twice recently that's the impression. read more

Our waitress informed us that they serve family style and the food will come out at no particular order. She warned us that appetizer might come after entrees. We started with the pork dumplings which has the right sauce but the dumpling itself was over cooked. I felt the dough was rather tough. Then we got our Dan dan noodles. For my taste- the noodles were too Al dente but the sauce was great. I loved our last dish the most. The salt and pepper fried rice was well made. I took a friend to DanDan for lunch two Fridays ago. The food was good, but not special; this restaurant has the reputation for being somewhat fusion and experimental, but it did not exceed a typical Chinese restaurant in variety except perhaps for a couple of salads which are not commonly found on an Asian menu. It was expensive. The total for the two of us was about $90 for the lunch buffet and a tea and soda and tip. Plus 5% "employee benefit" which I found on the bill after leaving (I do not scrutinize charges when I'm taking a guest). We were never informed there would be a charge for "employee benefits." I will never got there again, even if someone else offers to pay. The cost plus the surcharge minus the underwhelming variety were together insulting. read more

This is a more refined take on American Chinese. I'm enjoying my meal tremendously. First, we got a drink- the golden pineapple. Delicious, absolutely. For the apps my partner and I had the pork and chicken dumplings, crab Rangoon, and egg rolls. The pork The high point: the pork dumplings are out of this world good. Order them, thank me later. They are incredibly packed with flavor, each layer distinctive and harmonious with the others- from the pastry, the succulent meat ball, the fried garlic to the sauce and the low back heat to balance it out and the fresh herbs on top- in short spectacular. The chicken dumplings are good as well and will be a hit with anyone who isn't as big of a fan of the heat. The crab Rangoon were surprisingly fresh and light with green onion in the filling, that hadn't been over cooked- and the plum sauce is either made in house or so doctored it might as well be, and is delicious. The egg rolls were the only disappointment- still good, but very average. I wouldn't bother with them. For entrees the Singapore noodle is definitely not what I was expecting- but the meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly and the yellow curry was delicious. My dining partner got the mapo tofu far spicier than I could handle but the one bite I tried wasn't just spicy- lots of layering of flavors there too. Service was excellent, especially for a busy Friday night. A wonderful meal. If you're expecting Chinese American favorites or authentic Chinese food, you'll likely be delighted and surprised by Dan Dan. Sometimes things just don't go right when you dine out. Mistakes happen. The mark of a good establishment though is how well they do when wires do get crossed. We had a group of 5, including a 2 and 1/2 year old, and arrived at about 6pm on a Sunday evening. It was nice weather and we were seated outside on the patio, which was perfect for the toddler and for the rest of the diners inside the restaurant. Our server was helpful in suggesting a simple dish of buttered noodles to tide the young guy over until the appetizers and mains arrived, which was brought out quite promptly. I appreciate restaurants like DanDan that bring dishes straight to the table when ready rather than placing items under warming lights. The problem tonight was that the serving staff served one of our dishes to another table and we didn't realize that they had until late in the meal. Everything had been brought out, and we had even placed additional orders, but we were missing a dish. Although the meals are family style, one of our group was waiting for the last dish of DanDan noodles, the house special, which never arrived. It was mentioned that we were missing a dish to our server and she assured us that the kitchen would be making it right away. But that didn't happen. After waiting another 15 minutes or so with no follow up by our server and being annoyed by fruit flies on the patio, we decided that the evening was done and the 2 and 1/2 year old needed to get home. Our server did take a couple items off the bill, which was appreciated. But it would have been better had the restaurant management done a better job letting us know what was going on and telling the kitchen that they needed to make our dish right away. When we left, the manager in charge should have come and spoke to us rather than making the server take responsibility for the restaurant's mistakes. read more

There's been so much hype and buzz about this place that I was very excited to come here to celebrate a friend's retirement after 50 (!) years of work. The service, with Shannon and team was very good. She was attentive and kept drinks, bottles of water, and the entrees coming as we visited and congratulated our dear friend. We were also in the back, semi-private area, which I really appreciated. Yet the menu is pretty limited, especially for those that don't have a high tolerance for spice. The food, though, was a bit underwhelming. My fiancé ordered the chicken fried rice--minus mushrooms-and some of the chicken was undercooked. Once he saw that, he lost all interest in the dish and was very hesitant to try anything else, which I totally understand. I ordered the orange chicken and was thoroughly puzzled--it didn't really have any flavor, orange or otherwise. I never thought I would have longed for the same dish at Panda Express! A surprising treat was the General Tso's cauliflower. At most restaurants, the good General's dish is too spicy for me, but here, there was only a subtle heat with all of the flavor that seemed to be missing from the orange chicken. Lastly, they are charging a 20% service fee to all carryout and dine-in orders (so...everything. Just say "everything.") that goes to the front-of-house and back-of-house (so again...everyone) staff to support a livable wage. Shannon told us that they did this rather than raise their prices to support their staff. This confused me; either you raise the prices 20% or you charge me an additional 20% as a separate line item; either way, it's 20% more expensive. I am totally in favor of the move, but how it was handled was pretty ham-handed and disappointing. It reminded me of hotels that charge resort fees on top of the room rate that you must pay, whether you use the services or not.
