Before I even dive in, I have to give a shoutout to Kaidi, the sweet staff member who greets us with a warm smile and gentle tone every time. She's just so dang sweet! Daji serves Guiyang-style dishes -- and if you're wondering where in the world Guiyang is, it's the capital of Guizhou Province in southwestern China. Now let's get to the food, and why this is my number one noodle house on this rock. The signature soup is simmered for hours using cattle bones and herbs, then topped with cuts of stewed or braised beef. Anything simmered that long is bound for greatness. To top off the mind-blowing broth, the amount of noodles in a large bowl can feed a small village -- or one of me. Meat choices include thinly sliced beef shank, brisket, or tendon, and you're welcome to combine them, like I do. That said, the meat portions are fairly small, so I often order an extra side of meat to satisfy my gluttony. The smoky chili oil has bonito flakes mixed in -- a unique and delicious touch. After marketing in Chinatown, we decided to check out the Lunar New Year Festival activities at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza. As we passed several food vendors whose mouthwatering aromas made our stomachs growl, we headed to our favorite Chinese cake noodle restaurant. Still, we noticed DAJI 黔香阁 (Qianxiang Pavilion) near the cultural plaza's stage. I quickly opened my Yelp app and found its page listing as Daji Spicy Pavilion, which gives potential diners' taste buds a heads-up on the fiery spice levels. After recognizing the Chinese characters for Qianxiang, a town in China's Guizhou province, I assumed that this restaurant served Guizhou cuisine, which is famously noted for its bold, sour, and spicy flavors. I led my husband to the restaurant's window, where their Guizhou food menu and pictures were displayed. While peering into the restaurant, we noticed that only five tables inside could accommodate a total of 20 people. Three of the five tables were occupied, so we snagged one of the last available ones near the entrance. A young female worker greeted us with a smile and provided menus and glasses of iced water. We noticed we could either order through the QRC or wait for the server to return to take our order. As we were deciding on our meals, the server quickly returned to our table and informed us that their juicy, in-house-made dumplings were sold out and that two other menu items had been discontinued. Also, four office workers were eating their lunches. Apparently, they all ordered their food spicy because we could see them dabbing sweat from their faces and necks, guzzling water, and exclaiming how spicy yet delicious it was. Their "suffering" prompted us to order the non-spicy or mild noodle soups. FOOD: -Signature Beef Tendon Soup: My husband ordered this noodle soup with thin noodles and opted to upgrade to a large serving for just a dollar more. The huge bowl of thin, slightly firm, and chewy noodles was generously topped with slightly bouncy, gelatinous, melt-in-your-mouth textured beef tendon chunks. The tender beef tendon chunks weren't as exotically spiced as Cantonese-style, which is heady with star anise, soy sauce, cinnamon, ginger, and more, but still flavorful. The broth was clear, clean-tasting, and refreshing with cilantro, chopped green onions, and pickled Napa cabbage slices. My husband noticed that the thin noodles did not seem to bloat or get soggy even as he took his time eating this large serving. $15.99 + $1 (extra noodles) -Signature Beef Brisket Soup: I ordered the signature beef brisket and swapped several tender brisket chunks with my husband's beef tendon. I prefer thicker noodles, so I ordered them and upgraded to a large serving since we missed out on the dumplings. I expected the Guizhou-style beef brisket to be as clean-tasting and mild-tasting as the tendon. The beefy-tasting brisket was tender and jiggly, while the pickled cabbage slices, cilantro, and green onions further enhanced the clear, non-greasy, and refreshing hot broth. My noodles also didn't bloat even though we took our time eating. $15.99 + $1 (extra noodles) I'm not sure we'd ever try the spicy soup or the dry noodles, since our taste buds can barely handle the numbing Sichuan mala spice anymore. But we'd gladly return to try their other mild Guizhou dishes and look forward to their dumplings. I tired all the noodles to make sure I get the right one and I finally figured it out. I like the ramen noodle. The spice and flavor are good. Came here on a Sunday afternoon, the culture center was deserted. We ordered a Sichuan cold noodles, and a sweet and sour ribs. Wanted cucumber but it was out. The flavor of the noodles was great, the noodles were a bit undercooked and kinda hard to eat. The ribs were sugar laden (literally), and a bit hard and dry. "A taste of China" is all I needed to hear. Let's welcome Daji Spicy Pavilion to the Chinatown Cultural Plaza! Located in the same spot where Seasons used to be, right side from the main stage, near Tak Wah Tong. Daji specializes in Guizhou cuisine! A first for Hawaii and a huge welcome! The province is in between Sichuan and Hunan, so it does bring the spice! Authentic Sichuan is about the numbing and spicy, and Guizhou is about sour and spicy. The inside is very clean, bright, open, and comfortable. It even has its personally lighting spelling out "DAJI". I quite appreciate all the condiments on the table. The vinegar and homemade chili sauce are quite good and tasty. Also love the fact that they have MSG available too! It just adds more authenticity to this place. You order via QR code with the Toast app. First visit we had the Signature Dish Spicy Chicken (soup). This was simple and delicious. The pork bone broth was hearty with good flavor. My first thought after the first spoon was, "this tastes right". The signature chicken was excellent! Tender, solid flavors, and uses all the parts of the chicken. I wish it had more! The chili packs a punch after the first bite and enjoyed it more and more as I continued eating. For the noodles, you can choose between rice vermicelli (thick style), thin or thick noodles, or ramen. Also, add $1 for larger size bowl. The Boiled Dumplings were really good. It looks and feels like homemade. The wrapper had just the right amount of chewiness and thickness. The filling was tasty and flavorful with nice chunks of shrimp and chives. This is the right way! I enjoyed the Guizhou Pickled Radish very much. It was similar to the Japanese pickled radish, but better (and not yellow). The radish had a balance between savory, sour, and sweet. There was one thing I was curious of, Daji offers Fish Mint Root (折耳根). We asked about it, and you need to order in advance. They grow it at their home, and only digs it out of the ground the day before if someone orders it in their WeChat group chat. Cool! My wife says it's very fishy and strong from her experience. The lady who works there was so kind to let us try some! It was a pickled version, and it's just made for themselves to eat and not from the regular preparation. I liked it! They should add it on the menu, or make it available to order! It definitely had the suan-la sour-spicy. Not fishy at all! Second visit, we had the Casserole Sour Soup Beef Shank. The broth was delicious and spot on. This is true to its cuisine: sour and spicy--beef and tomato-y--balanced really well.The beef shank was ultra thin and tender. Just a solid bowl of noodle soup with authentic flavors. Next we tried the wontons. The way it's prepared and presented is authentic that also has a homey feel. The wontons were prepared very well with a thin wrapper that held its shape. The filling was tasty and had a nice amount of pork and shrimp. The soup was spot on! Tasted right and the addition of the dried seaweed, tiny dried shrimp, scallion and cilantro just gave it a homey feel because that's how it's made! Now for what I've been waiting for, the fish mint root (折耳根) prepared Guizhou style - sour and spicy! Oh, the first bite was a hit! It's definitely the chili pepper seeds that packs the punch. I liked the fish mint root and I'm happy to try something new. It wasn't fishy or overly strong for me. Maybe it's more tame with Hawaii's earth and climate? I'll find out in the future! Overall, I enjoyed my experiences at Daji Spicy Pavilion. It's awesome to have a new Chinese cuisine offered here. Hope there's more to come! The food is prepared very well and the flavors and tastes are spot on. You can see and feel the care and devotion into everything to make it as authentic as possible. The lady working there is so nice and friendly too! As you may or may not know, I do not like cilantro in Chinese cuisines (acceptable in other cuisines). I find it strong and overpowering. But for some weird reason, the cilantro prepared at Daji was not just acceptable, but very good! The taste was subtle and added a really nice herbaceous, peppery flavor to the dishes. The tables quite big, could seat 4-5 guest. It takes up a lot of space. When this place gets busy I can see some guests walking away since the wait can be long. Braised beef brisket noodles: Very good mala flavor. This bowl is pretty spicy. I got the rice noodles. It was thick and was very good with the spicy broth. The beef was good. Soft and tender. It would be nice to have tendon as well. Their pickled vegetables in the broth were good. Compliments well with the spiciness. Spicy chicken dry noodles: This dish is also quite spicy. Very good flavor. I got the tricky noodles. It was chewy and good. The spicy chicken comes in boneless or bone-in. I got boneless and it was alright. I was more into the noodles. However it would be nice if they could make this dish with other proteins such as beef instead of chicken. Shrimp and chives dumplings: The dumplings are steamed or boiled. It was very good and flavorful. The meat was juicy. The dumplings were soft and the skin was thin but didn't rip apart easily. This goes well with vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil. Overall, a very good spicy noodle place. I do wish they have more variety of appetizers to go with the noodles. The menu on the Q code and the paper menu have different names which makes it's very confusing. Service can be quite slow. The noodles here are some of the best I've had on the island--light, fresh, and packed with flavor without feeling heavy. I recently noticed they're trying to sell the business, which honestly surprised me. Places like this are hard to find and deserve far more support from the community. We heard about Daji from a friend and thought we try it out! Firstly, I want to say these bowls COME OUT SUPER HOT. If you were to take a sip of the broth once it's served to you, you'd probably burn your tongue. While that sounds bad it's actually a good thing. We were eating for a good 20 minutes and both of our soups were still SUPER HOT. Anyways, the Beef Brisket Soup was an 8/10! The meat is soft and tender, the noodles were nice and bouncy, and the broth is rich but light at the same time. Personally, I gave this an 8 because I wish the beef came braised. I feel so bad for my weak Cantonese stomach because I will be coming to Daji for more spicy noodles from now on! I don't know much about Guizhou cuisine I only know their famous Maotai wine lol. And there were a few items on the menu that we didn't really know what they were even though we could read Chinese. The staff was very helpful and explained everything clearly! So now I know ruan shao is pork belly and cui shao is fried pork belly! So we got the braised beef brisket noodles and crunchy cui shao ramen. Both were so spicy but good! Located in the Chinese cultural plaza is this tiny hole in the wall with about 5 tables. It's a very cozy space but it seems like this is the spot to be. Everyone that came in was very Chinese and spoke hardly any white people. They have a menu on the table that's hand written but our order and pay off the QR code. Service was very nice but because there's only two people working it can take a little bit to get your food. Everything tastes fresh and everything was cooked very well. The braised meats were perfectly tender and absorbed all the braising flavors super well and the noodles were super fresh and bouncy. Portion sizes are huge and the prices are very reasonable. Daji Spicy Pavillion opened up in Seasons old spot in the Chinese Cultural Plaza in the inner courtyard area. They've remodeled the interior and fixed it up with new but still limited seating and AC! (Thank goodness!). The menu boasts a bunch of different options that I'll be honest - half of which I have no idea what it is! Some of the translation is spotty in the menu. But the server is polite and explains it well. My coworker opted to go for the big bowl beef shank noodle soup with ramen noodles. The taste was good. Light, flavorful, and we added a little bit of this and that from the condiment platter at the table. I had the Cui-Shao noodle soup with ramen noodles. And my coworker convinced me to upgrade to a big bowl even though I was worried I wouldn't finish. We both got choy sum which elevated the dish as I felt the greens were helpful to add in texture and flavor. (Maybe to make me feel more healthy about my eating decisions too!) The dumplings were very good and served with cabbage. We used the vinegar which was on the sweet side and some soy sauce to dip. Not sure if that's the proper way to eat these but the taste was great and for a single order you get 12 pieces! My favorite thing about this place though? The Online Toast ordering so I can pre-select all of my adjustments and add-on. The pictures also make it so much easier to place an order and figure out what exactly I want. Daji Spicy Pavillion is the latest establishment in Chinatown, specializing in Guizhou cuisine! This is a rare gem, I belieeve the first of its kind here in Hawaii. The two dishes I had were fresh, a little spicy, and packed with umami. The ordering system can be a little intimidating. Ordering and payment is all online on the app and the Chinese name of the dishes appear first, then the English. However, once you get past that, you're in for bowls of delicious Guizhou food! My favorite dish was their five-spice braised beef brisket noodle soup. The herby broth was phenomenal and SO flavorful with the right amount of spice. The noodles were incredibly bouncy and the brisket was chopstick-tender. We also got one of their dry noodles: the spicy daji chicken noodles. You can have the chicken served on the side if you would like, but I think it's better served right on top. The spice level on this is not for the weak so proceed with caution. They also give little pieces of chicken with some sharp bone. This is what I grew up eating so I'm used to it, but again just proceed with caution. The thin ones, which I guess are supposed to be the highlight, felt a bit underwhelming by comparison, maybe just too subtle for my Western palate The smashed cucumbers on the side were crisp and cold with just enough garlic and vinegar to make you keep reaching for more, but even that didn't push things into "must return soon" territory. First off, I think I've found my husband and my new favorite Chinese noodle place on island. I'm so happy we randomly decided to try this place! I got a spicy beef noodle and it was SO good. I'm Chinese and always looking for ethnic noodles to satisfy my craving. Compared to many other places that do these braised beef noodle soups, you can really taste the individual flavors of the seasoning that the meat was cooked in. The flavor of the broth had a really good mala taste which was right up my alley. It was a level 2 spice, which was already set on the menu, but I thought it was the perfect amount. Just enough numbing without it being an uncomfortable eating experience, haha. We also had questions about what ruan shao and cui shao are, and the server was so kind in giving us a few pieces to sample. Of course, as soon as we tried them, we ordered both sides and I HIGHLY recommend it. So yummy, omg. I like that this place is laid back and hidden. There were quite a bit of local Chinese who came in for takeout orders, so that also told me that the flavors must really be authentic. But if you try the noodles here, the taste will speak for itself. My friend mentioned it to me before so when I passed by it in Chinatown cultural plaza I decided to give it try. And boy was it good, we ordered 2 signature beef noodle soups and 1 dry noodle dish plus their spicy chicken for 2 adults and 2 kids. Oh my god, everything was so delicious, even the kids cleaned their plates. We got medium size bowls and saw other table order large. Both are very generous portion, lots of meat and price is still very reasonable. Service was excellent! I want to gate keep this place but their food is too good to not share with the world. Located inside Chinatown culture Plaza, ground floor, they took over the other old noodle restaurant and open this new place. They have only five tables, we had to wait for at least 25 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. The menu is pretty simple, there is not a whole lot to choose from. 10 noodle dishes and 3 side dishes. There is a QR code on the table, you can scan and placed the order, you can use the same app to pay for your bill at the end of your meal. On the wall, they stated they will have hotpot but not until at a later days. I ordered the signature beef noodle. The soup base is clear, they put some veg, bean spout and green onion in the soup base. The beef is cut in to small pieces, quite fatty. The beef tasted OK and the noodle was just average, nothing out of the world. My wife ordered the five spicy beef noodle, they said it is spicy, but my wife said it is not at all spicy. We also ordered the sweet and sour ribs, it is cold, very small portion. For $10.99, I don't think it worth to order. All and all, good to have another noodle place but we don't see this will become our regular join in the future because of the lack of tables and possible long wait. read more

This place is SO good! I got the casserole sour soup with beef shank & chose thick noodles. Everything was bomb- broth flavor, noodles, garnishing, and tender meat. We were excited to try Daji given we love spicy noodle soup and dumplings. Unfortunately the meal was a let down. It looked far better than it tasted. Their signature spicy noodle soup (we got 1 chicken and 1 brisket) wasn't great-- broth tasted like hot pot broth but didn't have the depth of flavor we were hoping for. First few bites were tasty but quickly got boring. The bits of chicken had tons of bone in it - careful not to break a tooth. The brikset was good and tender- I'd recommend over chicken. They were out of dumplings (2pm) so we couldn't try them. Instead we got sweet and sour spare ribs and they were BAD- cold and mainly bones. Server was friendly and service overall was good. The restaurant is new so I'm going to give it another chance, but this was a 2.5 star experience read more

This noodle tastes below average. The hospitality is worse. Not recommended at all. I came in and saw a waiting list, but there were no pens and no staff around to help. About 10 minutes later, a waiter finally gave me a pen, and I added my name -- I was third on the list. After waiting another 20 minutes, a group of customers came in. They went to put their name down, picked up the same pen, but the waiter told them they didn't need to -- then immediately seated them ahead of me. Clearly, they knew each other. So what's the point of having a waiting list if it's not respected? There were still three names ahead, including mine. There were only 5 tables in the restaurant. It's frustrating when regulars get special treatment while others are left waiting for nothing. Definitely left a bad impression. You can give it a try if you want to waste money on average noodles and waste time on meaningless waiting. read more
