I was lured to this cafe by the beautiful pics on Yelp of its interior. This coffee shop has beautiful aesthetics! It's quite a big space with seating inside and outside. They also have a small retail section selling cute stuff and a small retail store next to it too. You can order at the counter or you can order from your table with the QR code. We didn't realize this until we had ordered at the counter and sat down at a table and noticed the QR code. I had the mint coffee which was very sweet, coffee wasn't strong enough IMO. Always have had a solid drink here--one of the only local coffee shops that offers Hojicha so that's a big plus in my book. They also have a Cherry Blossom syrup that is to die for and a great addition to any drink. Customer service has always been friendly but sub-par in comparison to other shops with a similar vibe. In addition it is usually pretty packed making it not a great place to enjoy your drink--however the ambiance is well thought out & they have a cool selection of home-good to browse whilst you wait. read more

The servers were a bit rude and not attentive. The food was mediocre at best. I did enjoy my bagel, but it was definitely not worth its price. My boyfriend got a sausage sandwich, and it was also pretty average. If you want actual filling food, look elsewhere. I also got a matcha and it did not taste good. It tasted like water and lacked any sort of matcha flavor. I do not recommend the matcha here. All in all, if you're willing to spend a good amount of money for average food, then by all means. First, I'd like to start by saying that I am from Oceanside, CA--born and raised--and I love supporting local businesses. That's exactly why my sisters and I chose to visit Communal instead of going to places like Starbucks or Panera for our morning coffee and brunch. Unfortunately, our experience was far from welcoming. One of the employees, Crystal M, was incredibly snarky and gave us attitude instead of simply explaining how things are done there. Rather than providing helpful service, she made us feel like we were a nuisance. I would also like to note, from the moment we walked in, it was clear we were not welcome. The staff barely acknowledged us, and when we asked about seating, we were told there wasn't enough space for a party of 14. What made this even more frustrating was that when I checked the back patio, There was plenty of seating available and I saw a party of 17+--who happened to have different colored skin--being immediately accommodated with smiles and polite service. They were seated without any issue, the contrast was undeniable and deeply upsetting. The clear disparity in how we were treated versus the other groups in the café was humiliating. No one should experience this kind of discrimination, especially in a public space that claims to be welcoming. It was an incredibly disheartening experience, and I will never return. However, I do want to acknowledge the older gentleman who served us our food--he was incredibly kind and helpful, which gave me hope that not all of the staff share the same poor attitude. That being said, management seriously needs to address this issue because one bad seed can kill a tree. No customer should feel unwelcome or disrespected when choosing to support a local business in their own home town. If you're from Oceanside, then you know we treat one another with respect and lead with love, this business however --- does not. Don't be misled by the other reviews as we were. I truly hope they make the necessary changes before more people have a similar experience. read more

I've been here several times before and have always enjoyed the coffee. I love the aesthetic, open seating, and the consistent quality of the beverages. The food is mid, but up until today, I've had friendly interactions with the staff. I recommended this café to my cousins to grab coffee and exchange Valentine's gifts because the back outdoor seating is usually empty. We were a party of 15, arriving gradually and meeting in the back. We ordered drinks, and several also ordered food. When my cousins arrived before me, the seating was clear, and there was still plenty of additional space for other customers. However, the staff displayed passive-aggressive behavior toward our group. This included snide remarks spoken loud enough for us to hear, rudeness while serving, and placing items forcefully. We were there for a total of two hours, and throughout that time, there was still ample seating available. Our voices never rose above the music playing from next door, and we were mindful of the other customers around us. Before leaving, we cleaned our area, pushed in our chairs, and threw away all of our trash. For many of my cousins, this was their first impression of the café. We are women of color, and the behavior displayed toward our party felt discriminatory. As locals, we love to support small businesses, but after this experience, I will not be returning. I also want to note that we went to another business afterward for a late lunch. Despite being busy, their staff was welcoming and provided excellent service. This makes me doubt that the size of our party was the issue. Additionally, I have personally spent hours studying here in the past and have seen other customers do the same. The pizza was scrumptious - so much better than many pizza spots! Nicely savory, good balance of cheese and prosciutto. Wish there were more tomatoes for more acidity to balance out the salt. The crust was good - could have probably stayed in the oven a touch longer. Nonetheless, a very good pizza. A solid A- in my books. The salad had generous portions of every ingredient. The super thin bacon added an unbelievable amount of texture! And everything was chopped so nicely I simply ate it with a spoon. I would have actually preferred a touch less dressing to better taste the sweetness from the lettuce and the onions. I was really disappointed with Communal. This place touts a lot of gluten free options as a selling point, but they have high cross contact and make no effort to be a place that is safe for celiac or allergies. For a place that pushes the gluten free options I feel they should make an effort to have separate toasters or a clean area. They should down play the gluten free options which are not actually gluten free due to the very high cross contact and no effort from the staff to accommodate. If you want good coffee there is plenty of competition so I'd rather hop over to vigilante down the street. If you want boho crunchy hippie vibes I guess this place is for you. But beware of their food options if you have a legitimate reason to be gluten free. If you are gluten free for the fad I guess you're good to go here. read more

Conflicted. Let's be honest: the best thing about Communal is the vibe of it. It's cute, and it's got a really open, bright environment. Great for coffee dates. It's pretty expensive though. A basic, small portioned avocado toast is $13 and a lavender latte is $6.50 (which I'm honestly more fine with), so you're looking at about $20 on an average spend here. And if that was it, I'd probably have it at a four star normally. It's a cute, every-once-in-a-while coffee shop. But I came in when it opened this morning at 7:00am, and after I sat down at one of the booths and looked down I noticed there was some old avocado and napkins welded to the base of one of the tables which means it was like that when they opened. Kinda gross. After feeling like I overspent on the avocado toast, it just rubbed me the wrong way. Picture is from a good experience I had here a while back. Food- 7 of us went and everyone loved the food. The highlights were Communal Avocado Toast, Oatmeal, Sweet Mint Cold Brew, and the Matcha Latte. I like that you could build orders and add items like an egg or sausage. Their menu is excellently labeled for vegan/vegetarian/gluten/nuts which makes it way easier to order. This place is adorable and everyone we interacted with was polite/friendly. This is a dream spot in my opinion for big groups because they have the space and you can pay for items separately, so no splitting the check convos at the end of the meal. We stayed for quiet a while and never felt rushed to give up the table. I like being able to order from the counter or from the QR code, also the line moved quickly. I will absolutely go back and look forward to trying more menu items. Why not 5 stars? A single glass of champagne took over 15 minutes, two coffee drinks took over 20 minutes. Our food came out with no forks/knives/napkins. It took us a while to find someone to get us cutlery, since at that time the register line was to the door. Yes we were there on a weekend but there were open tables and the staff was active but not slammed. Ordering through the QR code was helpful, however it wasn't clear which items they would carry to your designated table versus which items they would set on the counter for you to pick up. It has lots of natural lighting, plant life, and cute little trinkets to browse around while you're waiting in line. It's also adjacent to a cute flower shop!! They were out of kombucha and kefir soda by 11AM which knocked off a star for me. I had high expectations for the breakfast burrito but it sadly ended up being more tortilla than filling. I still enjoyed the salsa. The ube lemonade was definitely interesting. It tasted like a liquid pastry. The lavender lemonade was nice- not too sweet with a subtle hint of lavender. I was in Oceanside for work and have never explored the area. I browsed yelp to look for a coffee place. I saw Communal and checked out their menu. It sounded delicious and decided to pop in the following morning. I went in on a Friday morning around 9am, there was a few people in line and a few sitting. They had a option to tip but I decided I would tip in cash so I by passed it. After you pay you find seating. This place happens to be pretty popular so seating was limited. There was seating outside but it was sprinkling and kind of a little to cold to sit outside. We found seating at the bar but in order to sit with each other (I had a party of 3) the people at the bar seating saw us and was nice enough to move seats so that we can sit together. People sat at every other seats to give the other party spacing im assuming. I ordered the wild mushroom truffle toast, a latte flight, vanilla latte, pepperoni pizza and burrata tomato toast. The food came out before the coffee and I actually finished my food before my latte came out. The food and coffee were delicious! After we were done we picked up and cleaned up after ourselves to let another party to be able to sit. We placed our plates in a caddy that was marked "plates go here" cute place, good food. #115 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. My family decided to go on a day trip to San Diego, and I was in desperate need of caffeine while we were still en route, so a quick Yelp search led me here. Let me just start by saying that Communal is one of the prettiest coffeeshops I have ever been to. It's an open-air shop where they essentially roll up the glass walls and windows to let in that nice ocean breeze. The coffeeshop has a modern chic interior design with an industrial ceiling, sky lights that add to the bright lighting, concrete floors, and a mix of wooden and white tables and chairs. The shop is spacious with plants everywhere, and they even have a cute little gift shop for customers waiting in line to order. As for my coffee, I ordered the Rose vanilla latte. To be honest, I might as well have just ordered a plain latte because the flavoring was too subtle for me (I could taste a hint of rose but not the vanilla). I would have preferred for the flavor to have been more prominent. That being said, it was good coffee - rich and creamy.
