My husband and I always love coming here from Costa Mesa. Baristas and staff are all kind & respectful to the customers and to one another as well - as a fellow barista, I usually notice the culture behind bar right away as it affects the atmosphere on the floor. Always positive, fun and light in here :) Atmosphere is great for chatting with friends or getting some work done - nice and bright, but not too much to where my blue eyed self is low key tweaking out and blinded lol Drink was BOMB. First, I'd like to start by saying that I am from Oceanside, CA--born and raised--and I love supporting local businesses. That's exactly why my sisters and I chose to visit Communal instead of going to places like Starbucks or Panera for our morning coffee and brunch. Unfortunately, our experience was far from welcoming. One of the employees, Crystal M, was incredibly snarky and gave us attitude instead of simply explaining how things are done there. Rather than providing helpful service, she made us feel like we were a nuisance. I would also like to note, from the moment we walked in, it was clear we were not welcome. The staff barely acknowledged us, and when we asked about seating, we were told there wasn't enough space for a party of 14. What made this even more frustrating was that when I checked the back patio, There was plenty of seating available and I saw a party of 17+--who happened to have different colored skin--being immediately accommodated with smiles and polite service. They were seated without any issue, the contrast was undeniable and deeply upsetting. The clear disparity in how we were treated versus the other groups in the café was humiliating. No one should experience this kind of discrimination, especially in a public space that claims to be welcoming. It was an incredibly disheartening experience, and I will never return. However, I do want to acknowledge the older gentleman who served us our food--he was incredibly kind and helpful, which gave me hope that not all of the staff share the same poor attitude. That being said, management seriously needs to address this issue because one bad seed can kill a tree. No customer should feel unwelcome or disrespected when choosing to support a local business in their own home town. If you're from Oceanside, then you know we treat one another with respect and lead with love, this business however --- does not. Don't be misled by the other reviews as we were. I've been here several times before and have always enjoyed the coffee. I love the aesthetic, open seating, and the consistent quality of the beverages. The food is mid, but up until today, I've had friendly interactions with the staff. I recommended this café to my cousins to grab coffee and exchange Valentine's gifts because the back outdoor seating is usually empty. We were a party of 15, arriving gradually and meeting in the back. We ordered drinks, and several also ordered food. When my cousins arrived before me, the seating was clear, and there was still plenty of additional space for other customers. However, the staff displayed passive-aggressive behavior toward our group. This included snide remarks spoken loud enough for us to hear, rudeness while serving, and placing items forcefully. We were there for a total of two hours, and throughout that time, there was still ample seating available. Our voices never rose above the music playing from next door, and we were mindful of the other customers around us. Before leaving, we cleaned our area, pushed in our chairs, and threw away all of our trash. For many of my cousins, this was their first impression of the café. We are women of color, and the behavior displayed toward our party felt discriminatory. As locals, we love to support small businesses, but after this experience, I will not be returning. I also want to note that we went to another business afterward for a late lunch. Despite being busy, their staff was welcoming and provided excellent service. This makes me doubt that the size of our party was the issue. Additionally, I have personally spent hours studying here in the past and have seen other customers do the same. I was in Oceanside for work and have never explored the area. I browsed yelp to look for a coffee place. I saw Communal and checked out their menu. It sounded delicious and decided to pop in the following morning. I went in on a Friday morning around 9am, there was a few people in line and a few sitting. As I browsed at their cute items for sale, the line started piling up. I got the lavender honey iced latte and got their special sautéed mushroom toast. Cute coffee spot in oceanside. You scan the barcode to bring up the menu and order at the cashier and pay before you get your order. They had a option to tip but I decided I would tip in cash so I by passed it. After you pay you find seating. This place happens to be pretty popular so seating was limited. There was seating outside but it was sprinkling and kind of a little to cold to sit outside. We found seating at the bar but in order to sit with each other (I had a party of 3) the people at the bar seating saw us and was nice enough to move seats so that we can sit together. People sat at every other seats to give the other party spacing im assuming. I ordered the wild mushroom truffle toast, a latte flight, vanilla latte, pepperoni pizza and burrata tomato toast. The food came out before the coffee and I actually finished my food before my latte came out. The food and coffee were delicious! After we were done we picked up and cleaned up after ourselves to let another party to be able to sit. We placed our plates in a caddy that was marked "plates go here" cute place, good food. Ordered a large iced lavender latte & their everything bagel. The QR code worked perfectly & it was super easy to order on my phone. The service was delightful, I had my drink called out from the bar & my bagel served to my table where I was seated. The place itself is absolutely gorgeous! The skylight is beautiful. #115 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. My family decided to go on a day trip to San Diego, and I was in desperate need of caffeine while we were still en route, so a quick Yelp search led me here. Let me just start by saying that Communal is one of the prettiest coffeeshops I have ever been to. It's an open-air shop where they essentially roll up the glass walls and windows to let in that nice ocean breeze. The coffeeshop has a modern chic interior design with an industrial ceiling, sky lights that add to the bright lighting, concrete floors, and a mix of wooden and white tables and chairs. The shop is spacious with plants everywhere, and they even have a cute little gift shop for customers waiting in line to order. As for my coffee, I ordered the Rose vanilla latte. To be honest, I might as well have just ordered a plain latte because the flavoring was too subtle for me (I could taste a hint of rose but not the vanilla). I would have preferred for the flavor to have been more prominent. That being said, it was good coffee - rich and creamy. My wife and I stopped by on a quick trip to Oceanside. As in most beach areas, parking was challenging to find, and a mini cop was also patrolling the area and giving tickets. Aside from that, the service and coffee itself were solid. I ordered a cortado and it was great. Smooth flavor profile and the latte art was a nice touch. A bit pricey, but the quality is worth it. The wait was longer than I would have expected, however, and the pastry options were low at that time of day (around 2 pm). Overall, a good spot! read more

My favourite was latte flight which came with lavender and vanilla latte. Both were delicious. We also ordered salty caramel coffee which was very nice. We ordered pastry to accompany the coffee as well. The pastry was served warm and was very tasty. Next time I definitely want to try their food. The food selection was pretty good and look appetising from reading the ingredients that go into the dishes. The shop itself is spacious and inviting. The decorations were very modern. This place always has a line... that is a very good sign. Great find for a quick breakfast. Their pastries are fresh and delicious. Ours were devoured before I could snap a photo. I don't know how but I have found myself at the Oceanside Communal more often than the two much closer to my home in central SD. But alas the Oceanside location is GREAT. It's near matsu and a few other big players in Oceanside just off the main drag. The best part? The easy parking that the other locations have burned me on make it my fave. The avocado toast never disappoints. I also always grab a baked good. Their selections are always freaking awesome. I will say I had one breakfast sandwich that had no meat and I didn't realize until i bit in. It was still good but could've used some bacon. If you're in the area stop in. 4 months ago when they first opened, this was my go to place. Now that they're a little more established, this place has gotten pretentious and the service has gone downhill. There was no line and I had to wait 10 minutes for 2 lattes. One was made incorrectly and there was no apology. The barista even half assed the latte art when she had to fix my order (but the other one was perfect). I think the manager even asked what happened and she didn't acknowledge she made a mistake. There's also no consistency in the drink. One time the mocha was super chocolate-y and another time it was full of milk and almost no espresso... It's too bad seeing the service go downhill like this.. I really liked the staff when they first opened. There are two bathrooms that are clean (but no paper towels, only hand dryer). They sell some cute and aesthetic items by the register, which would make good gifts. Love the vibes of this place! It is so beautifully decorated and there is plenty of space both inside and outside. Wi-fi is pretty good too but does not extend outside well. There are outlets for laptop working but only in select areas. Got a deliciously gingery chai here. Most of the chai I get at coffeeshops is not strong enough in flavor and too sugary but that wasn't the case here. I was pleasantly surprised. I also got the cheesy potato danish and omg it is so good! I stayed here working almost all day and was happy to see a lot of vegetarian options. I got a mushroom pizzetta and brussel sprouts for lunch. The pizzetta is deceptively named. It's really a full-on pizza and was too much for me to eat on my own but bigger portions always beats getting something smaller than expected. The brussel sprouts were TOO salty though. I would not get that again. Service is great, the people here are so nice, bathrooms are well maintained and there are always cute doggos hanging around. I came to communal yesterday for First Fridays. This business shares a huge outdoor space with lots of tables + chairs + lounge decor. Love the outside space! I ordered a beer from Bottlecraft next door (delicious west coast style IPA) and the communal pizza. I sat outside to wait for my friend and enjoy my beer. The pizza was delivered by a friendly looking older gentleman and it looked DELICIOUS!! And it was! Pizza was so so good I even devoured the crust. My friend really enjoyed the pizza too. This review is only for drinks since when we arrived at 6:30 the kitchen was closed. We were greeted and informed about the kitchen immediately so didn't even think about food which was helpful. We ended up with 3 drinks only: 1) single espresso- fruity notes with green bite at the back of the throat as all good hipster coffees should be according to the driver 2) cucumber, lime, mint cocktail - ok. Not enough mint for my taste and light on the alcohol but cool and refreshing 3) Cab. Franc wine that my brother-in-law said was one of the worst he's ever had. Plus he paid $16 for a glass when the bottle goes for $24 - ok if the wine was drinkable but he said it was horrible. 4) Waters - kids had waters and we had to ask for them since the had nothing in the water pitcher but they politely gave them to us. Cleanliness- there was hardly anyone there and all the empty tables had crumbs, water rings or coffee spots. People bus their own dishes to a cart which was empty, so not understanding why one of the 2 front staff couldn't have wiped them down when they took the dirty dishes to the back. Hubby had to wipe down 2 tables with a stack of napkins for us to have a place to sit with our drinks that came out quickly. Bathrooms were clean and at the end of the night that's impressive.
