TL;DR: Don't eat here
If you like 1) awesome modern/hipster/high overhead decor, 2) expensive bar food, 3) great service 4) dining next to beautiful patrons and 5) Jack-of-all trades, master of none food, then this is the place for you.
If you don't mind 1) hole-in-the-wall decor, 2) good value, 3) medocre-decent service, 4) dining next to average Joe patrons and 5) specialty cuisines, then this place is NOT for you.
I think the phrase "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" applies to me. The last fusion restaurant I went to was a few years ago that was recommended by my wife's co-worker (who I don't know from Adam) was of course a total bust. So whenever I see the word "fusion" in the title, I usually run as fast as I can in the opposite direction. Think about it, if you want good Cantonese style home grown comfort food, do you run over to a Japanese restaurant? If you want authentic Vietnamese food, do you go to a mall food court? And last but not least, if you want great Sushi, do you go to the nearest super buffet? (ok, so maybe some of you do haha)
So my point is, my memory (good and bad) seems to get clouded over time. And they say to never say never. Let me back up the story a little. We had pork belly buns at Momofuku in Las Vegas about a month ago and they were AMAZING. Not because they were $7 a piece and you're forced to say that because you've just dropped the equivalent of 2 gallons of gas (at the time of this writing it's now $4/gallon at costco). These were truly melt-in-your-mouth, take out your dentures and gum it pork belly. So when someone mentioned that they've had similar pork belly buns I figured why drive all the way from Gilbert AZ to LV just to be put in a euphoric food coma when a presumably reasonable facscimile could potentially be 2 miles from home?
*Another mistake being cheap and Chinese, is that we arrived 5 mins before happy hour ended and we had to make a ridiculous quick grab on the 1 thing that was $2 off of $17.50 spicey ramen (what a deal!!!) So, I usually don't like to over order because 1) I like my money, 2) I hate bad food (call me crazy) but in a semi-panic stricken we can't pass up a deal frenzy we ordered 2 of the "bargain" ramen bowls, and my daughters favorite fried calamary that she orders and compares at different restaurants.
*Ok, so there's a reason why I only took English 101-102 in college and never took another writing class again post high school. I can get a little off track and my paragraphs, run-on sentences don't seem to flow as you've probably already demised. Back to the pork buns. +'s: 1) the buns were soft and fluffy (not what you came here for obviously) 2) the sauce and other ingredients (You know how your mind tries to block out unpleasant memories?)
-'): the main reason you order this, drum roll please....THE PORK BELLY: 1) how do you mess up pork belly? 2) you over cook it (is this possible?) 3) you try to make a fake crust by deep frying it(?) 4) you prefer pork belly to have a consistency of beef jerkey or shoe leather (disclaimer: I've never eaten shoe leather) but it's a metaphor right? Ok, so why did I even dream that this place would compare to Momofuko? Yeah, David charges $7 each, this place charges $5 each or $13.50/3 (yay, $.50 off costco bulk pricing). Imagine over cooking a lean pork chop. That's what you'll get. So like an idiot, and I can't blame the restaurant or chef(cook) I ordered 3 of the soft crab buns after choking down the pork bellys! Nobody was twisting my arm or putting a gun to my head to order these. 1) tasteless, 2) dry (you know how it's so dry you get the hiccups?) Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice (thrice) shame on me.
My daughter has a pretty amazing tastebud memory and when she's had something that is the benchmark (sushi, calamary, ramen, poke, beef chow fun, westlake soup, tomato beef chow mein, chicken nuggets, etc) she will take one bite and if it's less than what her memory serves her, she will put it down and leave the table hungry. She didn't finish the pork bun, the crab bun, the ramen or the calamary.
Are you still reading? The ramen: +'s: 1) Al dente noodles 2) visually appealing work of art. -'s: 1) broth was meh, looked awesome but taste trumps aesthetics in our family, 2) poached egg looked over easy? I could be mistaken, my daughter started stiring it before I was able to closely examine the contents. 3) and maybe this is normal, but the 2.5" green onion was raw 4) and the pork (see pork belly buns above) same! Being the raised in a household where you're supposed to finish everything on your plate before you can leave the table. I tried to gnaw on the metaphorically textured shoe leather but since my parents weren't with me, I went against my brainwashing and stopped exercising my tired jaw muscles.
I wrote this verbose review in hopes that it will remind me not to ever eat at a Asian-fusion restaurant unless someone insists and is paying. $90 poorer and I'll take 1/2 the blame. read more
