This hidden gem is a must go if you're in the area! My friend and I shared the queso fundido, tuna ceviche carnitas, barbacoa, El luchador, and the lengua taco. Flavors here are amazing and seasoned so well. The tacos mentioned were great in flavor and I really enjoyed the lengua and fried cod the most. The queso is a must save. Dip a couple of your chip in it and save some to add to your tacos. So creamy and delicious. The tuna ceviche was over a pineapple, guacamole and thick tortilla chip. Omg. This place is amazing. Words cannot describe how good this place is. First: covid test. I went to their location and took advantage of the outdoor seating. There weren't too many people there at the time, and they had hand sanitiser available. You place your order online, and the server comes out and gives you your food in disposable utensils. Now: onto the food. I ordered a borrego quesadilla (lamb) and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The side sauces themselves were flavourful, and the chilli really packs a punch. Clavel is a solid, trendy joint with good drinks, great ceviche, and interesting but subdued tacos. I visited for the third time yesterday for dinner and it was already quite crowded on a Monday early evening (~5:45pm). I ordered a margarita, two tacos, and shared a rock shrimp/white fish ceviche. The margarita was great - refreshing, flavorful, and just strong enough with the alcohol to be worth the money. Not to mention I got a discount because of the happy hour deal (which ran from 5-7pm at least on the Monday). For the ceviche, they are pretty generous with the seafood, and the flavors are strong (in a good way) and quite citrusy. The tacos overall were too subdued for my liking - flavors are on the milder end and there weren't enough spices to cut through the richness of the meat. They were also quite small. Service has been a hit or miss. I remember it being fine on prior visits, but it was quite slow and disorganized during yesterday's visit. Our ceviche was definitely forgotten about and we had to remind them, and my friend never got her second margarita (which we never bothered asking about). I also spent a while perusing the drink menu only to be told when I was ordering that both of my top choices were out - they could've told us that from the start especially since we made it very clear that we were all going to order drinks. Overall a fun visit with decent food/drinks! Definitely gets crowded and they don't take reservations, so be smart about when you decide to visit (or call in to see how busy they are). read more

We are not from Baltimore and when driving through wanting some good food we found this spot in an Eater article. It did not disappoint in flavor. We tried 5 different tacos and 2 different quesadillas. All were delicious. My favorite was probably the carne de res. We also started off with the esquite which was tasty and the queso fundido con rajas. Cocos llorones and a spicy margarita for cocktails. I, as a spicy lover, am happy to say that when they say spicy they mean it. Everything was well made and delicious. Service was meh. We sat outside and our server barely said anything at all to us but perhaps wasn't having a great night. Would definitely visit again. It's a nice vibe. They were very fast to bring out the food and drinks, like super fast. Maybe because it was near closing. But nonetheless the service is always great. I don't even know where to start when it comes to a review for Clavel because there are so many good things to say about this place. I've been here almost a dozen times yet somehow I've only just gotten around to reviewing it. Each time I've been here I've only had great experiences with friends that make me want to come back again. The move when coming to Clavel is to come during their happy hour between 5-7pm on Mondays through Fridays. Nothing, NOTHING, beats the $4 off their margaritas and queso fundido's with chorizo. There isn't a better way to start off a meal in Baltimore. Their margaritas and tasty and strong with a heavily salted rim that I love so much. And the queso fundido comes as a good size portion in a piping hot cast iron skillet with fresh chips, guacamole and frijoles on the side. When it comes to their tacos almost anything you pick will be a solid choice. After trying most of their options I've decided that my two favorites would be the lengua and al gobernador, both of which I got this past visit. Both come with the filling piled high up on their homemade corn tortillas, it's almost impossible to eat it without the filling spilling out because that's just how packed it is. As for dessert (yes you should still try to squeeze in dessert if you can because it's totally worth it) the tres leches cake is so good. I love the texture of the cake and it's so moist from being soaked in the milk you can press your fork against the cake and see the liquid ooze out. I'd say the only downside of this place would be how insanely busy it can get sometimes. You might have to wait for a while if you come during peak hours, but the bar always has the option of open seating if you don't mind sitting there. The first time I came here I remember waiting 90, yes 90 minutes to get seated because I came during the dinner rush. Yet despite that I still liked the experience enough to come back again and again. Clavel is: 5/5 for Food 4/5 for Service (because of wait times) 5/5 for Atmosphere My advice would be to come here early at 5pm when they open and beat the crowd. Order some margaritas and the queso fundido with your friends, relax and have a good time. This place has so much gluten-free food that instead of marking what's GF on their menu, they mark what isn't. They have a dedicated gluten-free fryer so I got to eat the chips/totopos. They have so many non-alcoholic mixed drinks, and for less than ten bucks. I got one with oatmilk (also GF!) that I loved. It's got the hip speakeasy exterior, the dim-lit twinkle lights, the rustic wooden feel that would sweep any hipster off their feet. The chips even come in woven baskets (not THAT'S some authenticity)! In all seriousness, if you've lived in Baltimore for a while, then Clavel needs no introduction. This is THE place to get your taco fix, to bring any friends/family visiting to show that Baltimore can have nice things too. Their chips are thick, crispy, and oh so addicting. They have dips for days to fit any palette whether you're into the spicy stuff, cheesy stuff, or want to be a basic B and stick with the guac. But definitely recommend their cheese fondue of it's your first time as this is one of their most quintessential food items. Their tacos are pretty much the best in the city - close your eyes and pick one and you won't be disappointed (trust me, I've done this and tried them all). The tortilla tastes very authentic and very similar to the Tex-mex tacos I've had in Texas, Colorado, and Arizona. The meat portions are HUGEEE and filling. Their margaritas can really mess you up - they're so strong and sweet - you're body will feel like a happy noodle by the end of the night. Really not sure if Clavel needs any more reviews because everyone who's anyone already knows how great this place is. But only negative is how crowded this place can get at all times of the day. You actually cannot go wrong with Clavel especially between 5pm & 7pm on a weeknight. If you are making a visit though prepare for a wait if you don't get there right at 5pm, anytime after you'll have a wait that might tip an hour for seating. During the happiest hour only $6 stands between you and the best margarita this side of the border. I'm not sure how they do it, but I've legitimately never had a better marg. Admittedly I have usually consume several and generally forget my quest to figure out their "secret sauce" before leaving the restaurant. Not drinking tonight? Don't worry because also on the happy hour menu is a bubbling queso-fundido that is served in a cast iron skillet. If you can avoid burning your tongue on the first bite (guilty) you'll be super pleased with yourself. Secret low key hero of the dish are the phenom fresh chips. Next up: tacos. I like easy parking lots, reservations, and quiet places, and despite having none of that, Clavel is a great experience in my book. It is almost always full and energetic. Even on a Wednesday - there will probably be a wait. But I've found the hosts and servers to be so welcoming, so in-the-know about their menu, and so sincere and nice in general, that it's worth it. Cozy inside with string lights, and the high ceilings make it feel more open. Recently had our first couple visits since before the pandemic, and we're already ready to go back. That's the mark of a good time. Every dish we tried was flavorful, interesting, fresh, and served simply - just as described by our server. Her suggestions were good - nothing over-sold. It feels light-hearted and fun, but the service isn't flippant - we felt valued, taken care of, and welcome. I've never had this type of salsa before coming here - it's warm and blended - loved it. Fresh tortilla chips - love. Guac - love. Tamale - love. The tacos are also very good - love the fresh cucumber and radish on the side, and wish there were a few more! Always hope they'll add 1 new veggie taco to the list. In the winter they have a vegetable soup, but it's off the menu over summer. Loved the drinks, too. After hearing about Clavel and their tacos for so long, I finally got the chance to try! The drinks were on the stronger side. I usually order the sweetest cocktail on the menu. With the waitress's help, I ended up getting Penca. It was a little stronger and bitter than I would like, but it came with a cute lime with caramelized sugar melted on top. For starters, we ordered the famous Queso Fundido. It was a good mix between cheese and chorizo. It also came with guac and this orange bean sauce that I really enjoyed. The Mixto ceviche was also refreshing. I was expecting a bowl of ceviche but it was actually placed on top of a small taco soft shell so I took small bits and ate it with chips. The tacos were great. I ordered the Carne de Res and Rajas Vegetarianas. The sirloin tips on the Carne were a little drier than what I preferred but still good. And the corn in the Rajas was very strong, which I enjoyed. My friends also got the El Luchador. Overall, the atmosphere is nice. I heard it can get very crowded, especially at dinner time. I've been here for dine in and take out and both times the experience was lacking. Wait is often super long here and sadly not worth the hype for the food. The ambiance is nice but is it really worth the 1+ hour wait? Not so sure. If you want good tacos, there are better hole in the wall places around highland town that have amazing tacos with no wait. Whatever you do, DO NOT order the tacos as takeout. We ordered them to go bc the wait was too long and by the time we got home (10 min) the tortilla was soggy and tacos falling apart. Tortillas are also small and with some of the filling that are juicer it just completely soaked it and was essentially inedible if you didn't use a fork. Sure the filling was good, but having to eat tacos that are falling apart just isn't a good experience. Also they charge for tortilla chips so keep that in mind as we guacamole and were not provided chips in our takeout order. If you are lucky enough to get there early (right at opening at 5 pm honestly bc that was the only time we were able to get a table. we were there at 6 the second time and were quoted a 1.5 hour wait), their drinks are good. The aguachile is also delicious when they have it. Clavel, consider taking reservations on weekend nights? Otherwise it is a deterrent to going. Here is a disclaimer, I have been here for brunch before which I would rate a 5/5 on all fronts (except we had to wait almost an hour for our food). They do not take reservations so unless you get there the minute they open the door, there is likely to be a 15-30 min wait. We got a table in 15 mins. 4/5 Food/Drink: I am vegetarian and ordered tostada de frijole, huitlacoche, and rojas vegetariana. TONS OF VEGGIE OPTIONS! The tostada was surprisingly my favorite - it was extremely crispy and did not fall apart with my first bite, like most tostadas do. The rojas vegetariana is a taco and was my second favorite and dish. The huitlacoche translates to "corn fungus" basically and is a fungus that grows on corn, no surprise. Don't google this, your appetite will be ruined. I felt daring so I went ahead and ordered it and the only way to describe it would be "earthy". I would be fine if I never ordered that again, but it was worth a try once. Also, almost every single drink on their menu is unique and delicious - would highly recommend no matter what time of day you're going. I stopped by Clavel for dinner this past Friday, and I really enjoyed the food and drinks. First - the food. I started with three tacos: one cochinita pibil (pork in bitter oranges and achiote), one barbacoa de borrego (house-butchered lamb in Mexican coffee, Negra Modelo, and spices), and one huitlacoche (corn fungus, mushroom, corn, epazote, queso cotija, and pickled squash blossom). I really liked the pork and lamb tacos. The huitlacoche taco was a bit disappointing to me - I LOVE huitlacoche, and this taco felt like it had way more mushroom and corn than huitlacoche. It felt like they were hiding the huitlacoche. Which is too bad because huitlacoche is delicious! This ended up tasting like a pretty basic veggie taco. Loved the tortillas. Then I got the appetizer portion of the flor de atun ceviche (Ahi tuna cured in ginger and oranges, with blackened tres chile pulp, and tomatillo). I loved the flavor of this dish, but i found it a bit hard to eat on the tostada (the tuna was cut into quite long slices, but the tostada broke into much smaller pieces). But a delicious dish that I want to eat again thinking about it now (loved that chile pulp)! Then for dessert I had the cacao and chapulin (I did it without the mezcal pairing): three stone-ground raw chocolate medallions with "guajillo-dusted chapulines." Chapulines are grasshoppers. I thought the chocolate was delicious, but the chapulines were ground so fine that I didn't think I got anything from them at all. Still, dark chocolate is such a good way to end a meal. The drinks? GREAT. To start I had the Amado Nervo (mezcal, raw cilantro honey, natural vermut, lime, sparking cava rose, and red alderwood smoked black salt), which was great. Then I had a shot of sotol (I hadn't had sotol since I was last in Mexico, so it was a treat to see it on the menu). To finish, I had the tepache - house wild fermented pineapple wine, which I'd never had before and which I LOVED. I'd drink all of these again and more. The restaurant is beautiful. I sat at the bar, which I'm fine with usually. I did think that the service was a bit scattered at the bar just because Clavel is so busy. I definitely felt like I had to work pretty hard to catch someone's eye to order something else. And I felt like I didn't have a set person to talk to - I think I ordered from at least three or four different people. Maybe it's just because I'm used to prices in Nashville and Austin, but I thought the meal was well priced, too! I tried a lot of things and the meal didn't break the bank! So my biggest complaint is the seating process. They open for dinner at 5, and they don't take reservations. This is all fine. However, I feel like if you're going to have a policy like that, restaurants also usually have a policy of not seating incomplete parties. Clavel doesn't. I was eating solo, so I was just hoping for a seat at the bar. Something about this system of waiting in a long line before you can speak to a hostess? If it's your first time, you might do things wrong. I waited in line but began to notice that some people were leaving the line to go into the restaurant and they didn't come back. Turns out you don't need to ask to sit at the bar, just walk in and grab a seat. I didn't know that, so I waited in the line as if I wanted a table. By the time I figured this out, the only seats left at the bar were the worst (my area was taken up by a lot of bar accoutrements and I barely had room for my plates). At least I'd know for next time. The other thing I wasn't fond of is that they let people reserve a lot of seats at the bar for incomplete parties. When I got to the bar one woman was holding three additional stools for her friends or family that weren't there yet. This is just kind of annoying? They open at 5 for dinner. I got there at 5:20? And every table was already taken, which meant there was a 1.5 hour wait for a table (because they literally seat the whole restaurant at once). There were a lot of people waiting outside. So definitely expect a wait unless you're there in line BEFORE they open for dinner service. That all being said, I thought the food came out of the kitchen very fast for how busy they were! I really enjoyed the food and drinks, but I wouldn't say I loved the experience overall. It's definitely a restaurant where you need to know the seating options and situations so that you can play things right. If I'm ever at Clavel again, I'll know to ignore the line, walk past all those people, and grab a seat the bar. And save a bunch for other people, too. I love how they have vegetarian options for the queso as well as all of their tacos and other items. They had a couple choices that I wanted to try, and both thee rajas and the mushrooms were great. The service was a lacking overall. We were there at happy hour, so it was very busy. However, the staff seemed a little annoyed and uninterested at times giving off some standoffish vibes. (But the food and drinks are still worth it). It did not take too much time for food and drinks to come to our table even though there were tons of people. What can I say...I love Mezcal and Mexican food and this spot does both of those both interestingly and tastly! There are quite a few Mezcal flights to choose from ranging from $18 to $28 (Mezcal ain't cheap) which all come with a pallet cleanser of pineapple slices. I keep hearing about this place and finally made it here! We went on a Monday and got super lucky and didn't have to wait. We were there on the early side - a bit before 6. The rumors are true - there is a reason there's always a wait for this place! We started off with cheese, guac and black bean dip app which was delicious. The margaritas were excellent as well. The tacos are the best I've had!! There are a ton of options and I don't think you can go wrong. I got the veggie one and a steak. Both were excellent. The ceviche looked really great as well so I'll have to come back. Even my friend from TX liked the tacos. We finished our meal with tres leches which was perfect and not too sweet. I feel pretty strongly that this place is over rated. The service, the tacos, and the drinks were all fine but nothing truly wowed me about any of them. The flavor profile of the tacos were VERY underwhelming and the drinks we got were wildly over priced for the basic margaritas that they were. I could have had a more satisfying meal for about 25 dollars cheaper at a taco truck. The chips and salsa were also not worth the money. While I appreciate that the chips are made in house they were not seasoned nearly enough and the salsa that came with them tasted like straight Cholula to me. Inexplicably this place was also absolutely packed on a Saturday at 5:30 and by the time we left it was no longer pleasant to be there as they allow people to pack themselves like sardines into the only hallway you can exit through.
