For appetizers, I tried their Banh Bot Chien Trung (fried flour cake with egg) and Sui Cao Chien (fried shrimp wontons). I was looking for a good local wonton spot and had seen recommendations from IG. Sadly, this place missed the mark horribly! The service was practically nonexistent. Had to wave our hands more than a few times as staff ignored us. My mom asked for rice noodles in her order and was given egg noodles instead. After taking the bowl back to the kitchen, the waiter came back and argued she didn't. She gave up and ate what she didn't ordered. The restaurant was small and dirty. Felt like a sardine sitting at the table. Ordered #14 small as pictured and was underwhelmed. Hardly any noodles. I had to move them so they could be pictured. The "wonton" was literally just a shrimp in a wonton wrapper. Definitely not authentic. What really was most off putting was that there was MOLD floating in the bottle of vinegar. Each dish was around $12-$15. We over spent around $65 on terrible food, service, and ambience. The beauty of living in Santa Cruz is that I am forced to go to the South Bay to find good food. So finally after a bit of searching and my friend taking me here, China Chen was knocked off the to-try list and WOW... I have been missing out. This visit took place pre-sheltering but I believe they offer take out currently which is great. This Vietnamese-Chinese-Cambodian hybrid noodle house is absolutely delicious. They don't seem like much from the outside. Heck- you might even think it's closed given the corner they're on tends to attract a lot of sunlight, so their blinds are always down. But if they are open, you need to come here quick for their scrumptious wonton noodles and flour cakes. Both dishes have been talked about extensively already but they truly are both some of the best I've had. The Banh Bot Chien "Flour Cake" ($9) with a sweet soy sauce is bomb. Vietnamese omelettes are some of my favorite and this place serves up the best ones in the area. The regular size was filling enough for three people. My Mi Sui Cao ($9) wonton noodles with thin egg noodles came with large shrimp wontons and slices of pork. The broth... 100% FANTASTIC. It's slightly sweeter than other noodle broths I've had but the flavors here are no joke. My friend who wasn't even hungry ended up finishing an entire bowl himself because the broth was just so good. The service it's really good even though their entire staff is full of people that barely speaking English, but the are not rude like most of the Pho and Chinese places around here in San Jose. I have been coming to China Chen since 2008 when I was a freshman at San Jose State University. The place itself it's always packed and loud unless you go after 3:00pm when it's very white and mellow. They're half chicken for $4.95 it's such a a good deal and it's so good and crispy. It's in the corner and is somewhat of a hole in the wall. Inside looks like your general Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant, similar to a TK noodle vibe with those booth tables. It's not the most modern but definitely feels authentic. Definitely recommend it if you come here to try their Mi Sui Cao, Wonton Noodle, or Banh Bo Chien! They are super delicious, very filling, and the broth is light with the right amount of salt. There are some items I wasn't so fond of like their Canh Bo Vien, which had a very heavy sesame oil flavor that overpowered the dish but there are a lot of great items here, and most are under only $10! I like how you can able to customize to your liking. You can get the soup or dry style version with your choice of noodles.
