NGL ITS GASSSS. It's pretty close to SJSU and as a college student with a hangover it's pretty good. The wonton noodle soup combo is solid. The broth was flavorful and had a good portion size. It comes with a small Banh Bot, it's like a small savory egg and flower cake. THE SAUCE IS FIRE for that cake. The service is usually great here too. They're really fast and nice. Hands down some of the coziest noodle soups I've had in San Jose. It's an absolute hole in the wall / corner street pocket with fantastic value. It's not going to win awards for cleanliness or interior design, but they'll get you your food in good time and you're going to love it. This place looks like it came out of the 80s, and going by the history of the place it's entirely probable the decor was from that era. Parking is a bit of a nightmare around downtown, as is expected. Street parking seems to be the way to go (ideally some blocks away if during peak), with a number of more expensive lots dotted around. Service was certainly on the very efficient/curt side of things, but nothing unusually so coming from similar places in the Chinese restaurant scene. You might need to flag down waitstaff for things though, but we didn't have much issue getting their attention. Menu is mostly divided into egg noodles and rice noodle soups, but there's the lovely combination of both (Hu Tieu Mi) that gives you both! Also plenty of appetizers/soups/cafe drinks in-between. Would love to give those flour cakes a try next time... 36. Hu Tieu Mi Trieu Chau - 5/5 Some of the homiest, coziest broth I've had in a long while. Not overpowering, but supremely easy to drink and perfect on the texture. Has a nice combination of fixings, plus two noodle types. Large size upgrades for more noodles is also inexpensive too (+$1). Egg noodles are fantastically chewy and slippery in just the right ways. Rice noodles are velvety smooth and have a nice heft to them. The fixings are all fresh and satisfying; for this bowl they include the shrimp, beef and fish balls, squid, and pork kidney. The lettuce was a bit weird personally, but it worked overall. Highly recommend the spicy sauce on the side though, that stuff had a really nice savory aroma to it. 38. Hu Tieu Mi Ga Quay - 5/5 Basically the same as the above, but replace the meats with a fantastically fried chicken (batter-less). Alot of Vietnamese people were dining in which is a great sign because you know the food has to be authentic. The flavors were good and so was the price. The price was about 10$ which is moderate level for the small. The food was filling and pretty tasty. Came by for lunch the other day and it was a tasty experience, just like pre-Covid days except with a slight increase in price, in line with restaurants around the area. This is not a Chinese restaurant as one normally expects, but a soup noodle place. Thus it's similar to Vietnamese pho, but it's not quite the same, and the difference might be a Chinese influence. (Menu titles are in both Vietnamese and Chinese, and there's one rice plate on the menu, a typical addition in pho places.) There's no sliced meat in the soup (and no side offerings of uncooked bean sprouts etc), as pho places specialize in, but you can get beef meatballs (big, cut up) and slices of pork kidney (which might as well be liver from the taste). I heard about this restaurant from a Steph Ngo video and have been wanting to try it for awhile. My boyfriend and I came on Saturday and we ordered the shrimp wonton rice and egg noodle soup, fried chicken egg noodle soup and the fried flour cake. The food came out quickly and I really appreciated how big the wontons were. I still had some rice noodles left when I was done so they give plenty of food for a good price. So crazy to think that my dad first brought me here over 10 years ago when we first moved to California! I didn't even recognize this place until I was standing right outside of it. Their Shrimp Wonton Rice & Egg Noodle Soup (w/ pork slices) is the best of both worlds, coming with a mix of egg noodles and flat/wide rice noodles! It is served with wonton & BBQ pork. The wonton skin is thin and silky and the shrimp inside is plump and flavorful! The Combination Egg Noodle Soup ordered with thick noodles are my absolute favorite!! I highly recommend getting the thicker noodles if you haven't tried them before. I love that this bowl comes with a variety of meats like shrimp, beef ball, fried fish ball, squid, and pork kidney! I've been going to this place since my early SJSU days back in 2013. So they've been around for at least a decade! I'm glad they made it through the pandemic. They've made many changes throughout. They accept card now. They also shorten their menu and took away the chowfun. I'm so sad. Their combo chowfun used to be my go-to and it seemed popular so not sure why they got rid of it. They still serve rice noodles so I'm sure it could be done. Their fried chicken with tomato rice is also one of my favorites! Chicken is always crispy, sometimes can be too well done but still delicious. Another one of my faves is their wonton noodle soup and rice flour cake. I've tried a good amount from their menu but always stick to the same two items because the taste has stayed consistent throughout the years. I'm not a fan of their egg noodle but to each their own. I've seen the owner about 90% of the time I've gone so I'm glad that he's proactive with his business. It's not the cleanest place but what do you expect? I've found a few tiny bugs in my lettuce but hey, more protein. They did comp my meal when this incident occurred and apologized. Today was the first time I ordered soup for takeout. I honestly think you get more when you eat at the restaurant. My favorite thing about the sriracha shortage is restaurants are forced to get new vendors so it's been fun trying out different brands and I absolutely love the one they have here. It's not really spicy but the flavor is phenomenal! Anyways, when I got my order to-go, I asked if I could get some of the sriracha sauce to-go as welll, I asked for two containers and the lady only filled both halfway. That's not even enough sauce to soup ratio. It really bothered me but I didn't want to keep asking for more cause she looked annoyed. I don't recommend taking it to-go though cause the soup isn't as hot, you'll have to microwave it when you get home and it just doesn't hit the same compared to eating it there. There's also a $1 price difference between a regular and a large and I think you just get more broth because I've gotten both sizes and compared the two, and I get 3 wontons no matter the size. Maybe you get more noodles? I definitely think you get less of everything regardless taking it to-go. Their customer service has not been the best. When it's busy vs. when it's not, you really have to flag them if you want your water refilled. But then again, it's not a fine dining establishment so you can't really expect much from a bunch of young employees. And the place is rather small and employees are constantly walking and taking orders so it's not difficult to flag one of them down. ChinaChen is definitely a secret hole-in-the-wall place in the downtown sj area. We got the egg and rice noodles with shrimp wonton (+1$ extra for a Large upgrade with extra noodles) and two orders of fried chicken. The default is normally thin egg noodles and thick rice noodles, but you can also opt for thin rice noodles (basically bánh pho). The soup broth is super flavorful and their fried chicken is juicy on the inside and crispy outside. If you prefer to dry noodles, you can order the dry version and they'll actually separate the noodles and broth (with extra bones with meat to gnaw on) for you! Restaurant is a bit small, and they haven't remodeled so it's definitely a little run down, but their food prices, service, and hospitality are still great as always. read more

Don't expect top tier cleanliness and service. The street parking and overall area can be rough. Over the years, it seems like the younger generation has taken over. Thank goodness because that means the delicious food can live on! My personal favorite is the hu tieu with wontons. It's so comforting. If I lived downtown, it'd be my go-to hangover spot. The wontons are meaty--they don't skimp on the shrimp. My dad likes the egg noodles but it's up to preference. We like to ask for a side of fried pork fat (tep mo) to put into our soup. I haven't tried much of their menu besides these items but if they're made by the same people, I don't think you can go wrong with anything. Though the food came out in like 5 min the place was filthy. So much so that the edge of the table left a mark on my shirt when I was trying to get out. Also the containers that had the sauces were caked with old sauce and handprints. The kitchen was dirty and the cook came out with dirty clothes and looked like he didn't shower in a week. The food tasted old. I had egg noodle seafood soup and the fish balls were old. Also had wontons and they were super greasy with grease taste like it was in the fryer for a week. It is almost 100% soups. Won't return and don't recommend it. read more
