I was visiting from Chicago when I happened upon Char. I ordered the mushroom / asparagus gratin, wedge salad and ribeye. I ordered my steak medium rare and I should have asked for medium rare plus. The steak was excellent, the asparagus gratin was very good, the wedge salad was excellent. I had a slightly dirty vodka martini with blue cheese olives that was very good. Service was very good. I was very impressed with my meal. I am use to good service and good food being from Chicago and I would put Char up against anything Chicago has to offer. Last week, I decided to try Char for their Monday red beans and rice. A disappointment. Notwithstanding the name "red beans and rice", it is generally understood that the order will almost always include a serving of sausage. This did, but the sausage was tiny pieces of meat and I think it came out of a can. Alternatively, I like the Local 463 red beans and rice--the sausage is a long, sliced piece--and it is far superior than that of Char. read more

One of the last times I dined in, the food was delicious as usual...the waiter on the other hand was a bit lackluster. He wasn't rude but nor was he engaging or attentive of any needs. This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Jackson for the past ten years, sadly the customer service has been on a downward spiral for quite some time. I placed a phone order at 11:20 and then drove 20 minutes to pick my order up. After waiting for 5 minutes someone comes from the kitchen and informs me that they are out of short ribs (the lunch special). He then shrugs his shoulders and says "We tried to call you after you placed your order. Would you like to order something else? Provided that this is a "lunch" special I feel that Char needs to do a better job in having adequate amounts to keep from running out within 20 minutes of opening. We are visiting from Texas and was told this was a good steak house. We expected so much more than the service and quality of food we received for the money we spent. Our waitress was absolutely terrible. Never introduced herself or had any interaction with any of our family members. All of our food was good except for the ribeye which was chewy and full of fat and the baked potato was dry and overcooked. We will not be back next time we come to Jackson. Today, I truly enjoyed my lunch experience here at Char. Upon entering the establishment, I was greeted with a welcome. After letting them know that I would be dining alone, I was lead to my table. As I sat down, my waitress MJ, approached me with the biggest smile and introduced herself to me. Her attitude was very bubbly and genuine. She proceeded to tell me about the specials of the day and asked if I would like some tea to drink. Her timing was prompt. I ordered the Country Fried Chicken with garlic cheddar stone grits with red onion bacon gravy, and collard greens and smashed sweet potatoes and cornbread. My food came out within 20minutes, and the Chicken was so tender and juicy and hot and fresh. The grits were outstanding and the collards were on point in flavor. The sweet potatoes were a little too sweet for my liking, but I ate them all up. My plate didn't have a crumb on it. The noise level was high, but the jazz music made it tolerable. The food, service and drinks are impeccable. We went for brunch, and we were not disappointed at all. First, our server, Victoria, was the best. You definitely want to sit in her section. She was sweet and personable. She is the type of person you would want to be friends with. Service makes a difference. The food! We got the fried green tomatoes. They were full of flavor. You get 5! The main course was the lump crab, crawfish and andouille sausage with stone ground grits. Baby let me tell you this right here! It comes with a personal baguette that was soft and hot. For the life of me I can't understand why a restaurant like this wouldn't have cocktail onions. That's sort of de rigueur for any place that claims to be any sort of fine dining. When I changed my order from a Gibson to a water (a Gibson was all I was interested in) the bartender suddenly became very short and inattentive with me. Not very professional. If you're looking for a nice, slightly upscale dinner in Jackson, I'd highly suggest checking out Char. It's marketed as a "steak" place, and their steaks definitely won't let you down. I've always been impressed, but I'm not a huge steak person. Char always offers excellent seafood dishes. And their black and blue salad is one of my favorite salads in town! But mostly, I just want to talk about their pecan pie. Y'all, it is BY FAR my favorite dessert in town. And that's really saying something because dessert is my favorite meal of the day, and I've had a lot of desserts in this town. Char's pecan pie exists in a realm beyond words. A realm where a rich and gooey chocolatey pecan pie has been designed to melt perfectly in your mouth and leave you wanting more. Of all the times I've been to Char, more than half those times have definitely been just for the pie. (And a glass of wine, or two.) The restaurant, like I said, is slightly upscale. Think white table-cloths, slightly dimmed lights. The menu is a bit on the pricier side, but the lunch prices aren't unreasonable. Their brunch is also reeeeally good and they've always got a live jazz band that travels around the restaurant playing for everyone at their tables! It's very New Orleans-y in that way. The service here is always really nice. It's a very professional staff and you can tell they take the job seriously. I like to sit in the bar area. At night they have a pianist and they'll usually take requests! It's nice to sit and listen to some jazz and enjoy your pie. And other food too, of course! But man... that pie. If you ever wonder why it is hard to find good service, look no further than the cheap customer that decides to save a few $ when they get the bill and tip poorly. Please people, when your waiter or waitress takes care of you tip AT LEAST 15% minimum. If you want them to feel appreciated, tip much higher. The ambiance of the place was nice, I called ahead (maybe 5 minutes before our arrival) and we were seated as soon as we walked through the door. The menu was simple a straight to the point. Shocking right? But let me explain. I came here several weeks ago for an interview candidate dinner, and witnessing the service and the variety of dishes done, it was clear that their focus was on the higher budget items. The real problem with this place appears to be management, they just don't seem to have their act together, from hiring the wrong waiters/waitresses to the wrong cooks, it was clear they don't know what they're doing. The restaurant itself has such potential with a real upscale crowd. Unfortunately it doesn't deliver. The steaks were great, but the salads and side dishes were sloppy, and service inattentive and spotty at best. On a good note however, I've had their catered food several times, and it has always been absolutely top notch, quality food, the best I've had from several restaurants in the area. Char is as good as it gets. It's a great place to have dinner and be able to dress your attire up. Most places have become so chill when it comes to attire, but not at Char. I'm thankful they have maintained that standard. Ladies can easily wear a dress and heels to dinner and would not be overdressed. The food is wonderful! I had the small filet mignon and it was top notch. To top off my meal, I had a chocolate dessert, (can't remember what it was called) but it was delicious! I visited Char for lunch and got a takeout order consisting of a char salad with grilled chicken and a bite size pecan caramel butter crunch. The salad was very underwhelming due to the greens being very bitter and the chicken, although cooked well, was very bland in my opinion. The salad was a waste because i couldn't eat anything except the chicken out of it. The dessert was AMAZING. It paired perfectly with the vanilla bean ice cream. I enjoyed the service and overall ambiance of an old fashioned style steak house. This was my first trip to Jackson, MS . I ordered the gumbo and loved it. The small rib eye was done perfectly as ordered, medium rare, and you can't beat the garlic butter on top. I even enjoyed the asparagus in lieu of the potato. The wines were reasonably priced.
