This was my first time visiting Scrooges for an early dinner. I ordered the cajun fried green tomatoes, and grilled chicken which comes with cornbread and 2 sides. Our waitress was Amanda. Amanda was working with a family reunion on one side of the restaurant and 4-6 tables on our side. She was busy, but she served each table with grace and kindness. The food was amazing-the chicken was moist and seasoned, the black-eye peas was delicious, and the corn bread was nice and fluffy. I enjoyed my meal and my conversation. I was in town for a conference, and I have enjoyed my time here. I look forward to returning. read more

I've enjoyed Scrooge's for many years now! Some staff has come & gone, but one thing seems to remain: Quality! No matter what you choose from bar drinks, to a wide range of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, plates specials and even pizza, it's all good! This is a local joint, so expect lots of local folks, staff included, to converse with, I can't recall a time I've been disappointed with an experience at Scrooges. The bar is a bit dark, but has a nice local flavor with just enough "stuff" to look at, comfortable chairs too! Hmm... after 3 whiskey sours before lunch, I forgot to photo anything else! The wife & I had drinks, a fried pickle appetizer, and we both had one of our favorites: fried boneless skinless chicken breast (it's excellent!) with mashed taters & gravy collard greens & corn bread! Fantastic supper. We found this place on maps just because we were hunting something more than just fast food. Read a few reviews and decided to give it a try. You definitely have to be hunting for it to find it, but once you do, I feel you will enjoy it too. Place is old, but kinda rustic. And bar is completely separated from the dining area (which is nice for us non-drinkers). Service was great and food was fantastic. We shared fried pickles, I had a ribeye, salad, twice baked potato and French bread and my husband had the country fried steak (veal by the way), grilled veggies, fries and cornbread. If you want a great steak, this is the place. I visited them late one evening as I was in town for a conference. The place was fairly empty of customers at the time, but I think it was just a slow day for them. I was seated as soon as I walked in and the service staff was very attentive the entire time. I had the ribeye with mixed veggies and hush puppies. It was all delicious! No need for any steak sauce, either. Their kitchen knows what they are doing. They are worth the visit. The outside of this place is pretty non-descript, and it looks the same inside. One big room with rows of booths, very little decor at all, with some TVs hanging in the corners. The wait staff and host were friendly, though they seemed to be interested in their own discussions more than the patrons. The food was good, but not great--the one stand-out was the French bread toast, which was excellent. Otherwise, the Rueben was below average, crab cakes about average and the gumbo good, but nothing to write home about. read more

When we first walked in, a very old mildew smell overwhelmed us. We sat down and we're handed filthy menus..covered in dirt and food from the previous customers. We ordered the filet (steak) and the beef tips because they were recommended by our waitress. The steak was extremely dry and and had absolutely no flavor. The beef tips had little to no seasoning and tasted as if it had been sitting out for quite some time. I will say this, customer service was great. Our waitress was kind as well as attentive. However, spending $70 plus on food that I could've made at home is not my idea of a good time. read more

The burger was fabulous, just like the waitress said it would be. I think that's their biggest seller. The gumbo was very good. The hush-puppies were cooked well but bland. They had a few extra sides you don't normally run across, though not necessarily the ones I prefer. It was out first time to try Scrooges. We would probably go back if we lived closer. read more

Ok, I'm tired after a long day of travel and really didn't want to review BUT the service here is SO STELLAR, I got to say something. Joel, host/server/extraordinaire, made our selects easy. HUGE serving size on the fried pickles. They're a bit salty, but oh-so-addictive. (Have a beer, that helps) The salads- ALSO HUGE. This place doesn't scrimp. We're taking the pecan cobbler and TWO scoops of ice cream (free check in offer) back home for later. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the good food and service. The last time I ate at Scrooges was when they were located in Highland Village. Relocated to a new state...Yelp to the rescue!!! I have been anticipating a good ole southern meal for weeks. Scrooges was the 1st restaurant on the list when I opened my app this afternoon; and it did not disappoint. TJ was my waiter; he kindly helped with suggestions and provided great service overall. I checked in and earned a free dessert for doing so. I chose the buttermilk pie...delish. I've never tasted anything quite like it. Although I think I saw something similar called a chess pie on Food Network. It was very tasty, but super sweet. My meal was divine! I had a blue plate special (entree, two sides and bread choice). The pork tenderloin medallions were fork-tender. I also had turnip green with the actual turnip root!!! (Only in Mississippi...just like my Granny cooks them.) The other items I ordered were the smashed potatoes and a cheese biscuit. Of course I washed it all down with sweet tea. Trying to talk myself into not going again for lunch tomorrow. :) read more

The Pecan Cobbler was crazy good! Prices are extremely affordable and happy hour was pretty good too! I will definitely be a visitor here on my trips to Jackson. We just did not have a good experience here. Food was very pricey. My granddaughter had a small personal pizza that she barely touched. It looked like a bread bowl full of yellow cheese. It was $16. I got 5 chicken wings that cost 9.95. They were ok. Since the meal was not good I let my granddaughter have the brownie with vanilla ice cream. It wasn't very good either. We only ate half of it between the 2 of us. The check was $54. We left and went to find food elsewhere. read more

Happened upon this quaint establishment while on our way down the Trace. Pot roast and green beans just like grandmas hit the spot. And a bowl of gumbo topped it off. If we lived local, we would be regulars. Just don't choose to sit in a booth if you want a comfortable seat, benches are very shallow. read more
