While traveling from NC to TX, we drove through Jackson, MS, looking for lunch. We checked out Yelp and headed for Rooster's at 2906 N State St. We ordered country fried steak with coleslaw and green beans, and a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings. We also got an unsweetened tea, Diet Coke and homemade banana pudding. Everything was absolutely delicious. The country fried steak was crispy on the outside and hot on the inside and had plenty of gravy on top. Also, the gravy was exactly the right consistency. The coleslaw was excellent and the green beans were hot as well, and both were seasoned well. The unsweetened tea was very tasty and fresh. The burger was cooked to medium as requested. The bacon and cheese were great toppings as was the crisp lettuce and what tasted like local tomatoes. One of the best things about the burger was the homemade white bun--(also served with the country steak). It tasted like buns my mom used to make. The onion rings were hot and crispy, with a wonderful crunchy fried batter. Delicious! We haven't tried the pudding yet, but we'll update our review tonight when we try it out! My go-to in Fondren is always Pig & Pint. That's where we were headed on the way to Oxford, but they didn't have any water that day, so we ended up going up the road to Rooster's instead. What a great accidental find. Rooster's is absolutely awesome. I had the burger and onion rings and both were damn good. The burger was simple, cooked right, and exactly what a burger should be. The onion rings were thin, crispy, and really good. My daughter got the chicken tenders and they were massive. I mean actually massive. More importantly, they were delicious. The fries were hand cut and just as good. Service was friendly, the place had a cool neighborhood feel, and it filled up fast. Parking is definitely at a premium, so get there early if you can or be prepared to wait a little. This is one of those places we probably would not have found if everything had gone according to plan, and now I'm really glad it didn't. So thank you to whoever forgot to pay the water bill at Pig & Pint. Just kidding. Thank you to whatever public works person accidentally broke the main water supply and sent us down the road. Everything about this place was great! The food was delicious - they even bake their own buns fresh every day, and make all sauces in house. Their butter fries are tossed in a butter sauce with garlic and shallots, and are amazing. I went to Rooster's today after not visiting for some time. Imagine my disappointment to find that the food was not good. My friend had a burger. I had the hamburger steak. Both meat patties seemed to have been sitting in a steam tray. Each had no color other than gray and were tasteless. Neither of the patties had seen a grill much less the charring I was used to. The gravy on the hamburger steak tasted stale and over seasoned. The curly fries were stems and pieces and big blobs of cold potatoes. Needless to say we left most of the food on the table and will not be back. Best thing I can say is that the restaurant seemed clean and the staff were friendly. They must marinate and tenderize them. I don't usually prefer white meat as it's often dry. Not the case here! Onion rings were good, Thin, battered, rings. The red beans and rice... meh... ok, but lacking something, perhaps the smokiness of sausage or ham? But maybe they are keeping it vegetarian (I didn't ask.) I liked that the jalapeno slices were right on top so I could easily remove them. My companion had the fried chicken sandwich with curly fries. Enjoyed every bite. Fries were piping hot. The bread was yummy like a fluffy cloud! I had overlooked the Mushroom Swiss Burger on the menu, so I'll have to return to try that. The dining room was spacious and clean, with an open air porch-room on the perimeter. I never order chicken tenders from anywhere, but I will here. I've never had such gigantic tenders. They were juicy, crispy, and hot (temp). Something I'll crave for sure. You get two sides with the 3 piece meal and it's a steal. Basically 2 meals for me. The onion rings were perfectly crunchy while the coleslaw was a little tangy which cut the richness of the mac and cheese. Fries were good, but I recommend the other 3 sides more. Man, I must admit this was some of the best food I've had since I have moved to Mississippi. My wife got the Stoopid Burger, and I got this Chicken strip club sliders plate. Both were great. You could actually taste the burger and chicken. I love Mississippi more than anywhere on the planet, but down in Simpson County where we live there are maybe 2-3 places that are good to eat. They are unfortunately at least 20-30 mins from my house. Rooster is in a nice safe modern area of Jackson that was really nice to see. But Apple Maps took us through the hood heading back to work. It was amazing to me to see the destruction of a community by greedy politicians that only fill their fat pockets and do nothing for their people they represent. Worst road I have ever driven on besides in the oil fields in OK and ND. I literally rolled through that area with my G19x on my lap with hand resting on the grip while sketchy crackheads walked up to my car at the lights telling me to give them this or that. The young lady had a very bad attitude and only gave me one of my orders I had to go back and get the other one. the chicken was so salty and burnt on one side I couldn't eat it. If you have never been to Roosters and/ or Basil's in The Fondren District of Jackson, MS, then you do not know what you are missing. These family owned restaurants are both unique and the food is to die for. They are located in opposite ends of a the coolest building. My husband and I go ALL the time and as often as possible. My husband always goes for Roosters and his poison is the HUGE Country Fried Steak plate with mashed potatoes and Mac & Cheese. This time he got a salad for me, because he didn't know I was getting my own salad across the Hall at Basil's along with my favorite Panini. I always get the Turkey and cream cheese panini and have to them to add olive salad... OMG it's amazing. Roosters' also sales the best cheese burger in town with a jalapeño bun of course. I waited 30 minutes for my food and didn't get several items in the order. The girl who I spoke to about the time and missing items could have cared less. I waited another 10 minutes for the remaining items, which I still did not get before I finally just had to leave to get back to work. I hate that this experience was so bad because I love their food. We were traveling and found this place on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try. When you walk in you order from a counter and then your food is brought to your table. The place was neat and clean. There was an indoor area with glass walls that lead to a place with seats that were open to the outside by way of garage doors that opened. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I got the hamburger steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, and green beans and was well satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food. I left stuffed. My wife had a chicken sandwich and curly fries; she said the sandwich was good but they were some of the best curly fries she had ever had.
