    Salad with Comeback sauce
    Bill J.

I've eaten here several times over the years, and always had a good meal. On this trip, I enjoyed a salad with their comeback sauce, a cool glass of iced tea, and a Captain's platter. Delicious ! I'm very happy that the place is under new management, and they saved this landmark restaurant in Jackson. I'm also very happy that there are first floor bathrooms now. In the past you used to have to walk outside and go to a door that opened to a long flight of steep stairs to go to the second floor These old bathrooms were near the kitchen.

So a few nights ago, my husband and I went to The Mayflower, in downtown Jxn. The experience was amazing! We were greeted by their gracious host/Manager, Roberta, and seated right away with the Phenomenal, Colombia. Every staff member, including LG (the security guard) welcomed us. Colombia greated our table with water and took our drink and app orders. We started with their Half Dzn Oysters-Broiled. They were breaded and broiled in their Mayflower fish sauce. I ended up dipping mine their house made comeback ::chefs kiss:: For dinner, we shared their Captian's Platter. It came with a redfish filet, shrimp, oysters, stuffed crab, soft shell crab, a side and a salad. We added some extra shrimp and oysters, along with an extra side salad and paid an up charge for cream spinach (in lieu of fries or baked potato.) Colo made sure to course our meal out by brining our side salads out first. We ended our meal with their house made Lemon Ice Box Pie. I seriously been dreaming about this pie. EVERYTHING was done right at The Mayflower and we are looking forward to going back soon.

Classic diner with modern menu. Everything was fantastic. Soft shell crab was outstanding.

Fantastic vibe. Just Ike I remembered but better! Clean and fresh but the retro decor still with us. Great bar made from the original counter. Nice dining in the booths and tables. Food was excellent. Highly recommend the fried oysters. And the comeback sauce on the salad of course! A Jackson landmark for sure.

I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating... I realize that the ambiance isn't what most people are looking for now days, but it has so much character! What they lack in decor, they make up for in food quality and staff personality. Tricia was an excellent waitress with good recommendations. My broiled fish lunch special was SO good!! Jackson, please support these older businesses!!!! I want it to be in business so I can come again when I'm in town! They had a newspaper article that said 66 years of service was printed in 2001, so now it's 86 years!!! How awesome is that?

I called in my order of two bowls of steamed white rice, a half a pound of sausage, and 3 corn on the Cobb. The corn on the Cobb is currently advertised at $3.00 on the website. However the agent informed me that the price has changed and it was now $3.50 and she said this was an incredible amount of anger and attitude. I informed her that the restaurant was suppose to sell at the advertised price but that I would speak to someone about it later and as soon as I said that it sounded like she slammed down the phone. I heard nothing. I ended up calling back and she answered and before I could say anything she said someone else 'would deal with me'. When the other woman came to the phone I started to give my order and I mentioned the advertised price showed $3.00 and she cut me off and said 'no one would be honoring the price on the website'. As I was speaking to her the other female was in the background yelling and insulting me. I could hear her very well. I mentioned to the woman that I could hear her and she cut me off again and told me in so many words she 'didnt have time to address that and for me to continue with the order". I finished my order and she said one of the part owners was inside the restaurant but that the owners 'never spoke with customers' and "he's not going to discount anything for you'. WOW... Talk about being incredibly rude. I like the food here but the way they handled the price being different on the website was just to ignore it and go off on the customer who brought it to their attention.

We were greeted shortly by our waiter Caden. Our waiter was extremely polite and very attentive. I can only speak in the items I personally tried the watermelon jalapeño margarita was a 7.5/10. There wasn't a strong watermelon flavor and there really wasn't a kick from the jalapeño. The bartender wasn't definitely not shy with the liquor but it wasn't over powering. The shrimp and crab ceviche was probably a 8/10 ( could've been a 9/10 but it had cucumbers in it). It had a tad bit too much lime juice or lime taste. The shrimp and crab dip was delicious! 9/10. Fresh chips as well. I really enjoyed the pickled red onion addition was really good. Overall Saltine has a great menu selection, warm and welcoming vibe.

That was delicious. Also got the lobster and crawfish dip ok and one can never go wrong with calamari which was also good. For dinner, I had the salmon and grits and kale. It was ok because not quite what I was expecting - I was expecting spicy and it was too sweet for me but might be my fault for not fully reading the description and being focused on the Cajun seared aspect of it. It was still good though. Nothing superb but filling and loved the crunchy kale on top. Really liked that they were open on a Monday and they were fast. At one point, too fast because one of my co- diner's dinner came too soon while still eating their salad. For dessert, we got the cinnamon roll cheesecake and shared it. I only had one bite because it was too rich for me but it was very tasty and good. Unfortunately, we didn't get the oysters which is THE item to get here but it was otherwise a good visit.

I've had the dinner buffet before and it is really good as well!! Everything was seasoned well. I didn't eat anything that I didn't enjoy. I love how my drink was still cold because of the cup to they serve the drinks in. The ambiance is very family style and it is good for big groups. We had a group of 20 and we were accommodated well. Now here's for the breakdown of the buffet that I can remember. Meats: catfish, pork chops, chicken, blackened catfish, fried liver, bbq chicken, fried shrimp, and pot roast Sides and veggies: greens, black eyed peas, fried okra corn, fried green tomatoes, rice (sorta like a dirty rice), mashed potatoes, yams, hush puppies, mac &cheese, Mexican corn bread, regular corn bread, corn salad, salad bar, pasta salad, etc Desserts: plenty were available. I got the banana pudding and it was tasty Listen, check out Berry's seafood the next time you are in this part of Mississippi!!! They have crab legs during dinner hoursp

Food: Crab cakes are amazing! Turnip greens, mac n cheese, fried okra, and bang bang shrimp, all were delish! Fried catfish was pretty ok. Could have been a little more crisp - and seasoned. There were so many choices. Saturday night is seafood night. They also had flounder Parmesean, seafood pasta, crawfish etouffee, stuffed crab, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, and crab legs. There was also steak and chicken tenders on the bar. Steak was good. There were quite a few salads to choose from and dessert as well. Note: You can order from the menu if you don't want the buffet. Service: Good - no issues. Price: About $40 per person for the standard dinner buffet. More if you add the unlimited crab leg option. Atmosphere: Country style buffet. Very southern themed. Waitresses are in overalls, religious decor, and worship music playing over the speaker and on the tvs. I actually appreciated the Maverick City playlist today. It was packed so if you go in the weekend for dinner, be prepared for a wait. There's a lady with a jewelry stand near the waiting area. Parking: If you can't find a spot in the main lot there's an additional parking lot behind the building. Overall: I really enjoyed it - particularly the crab cakes.
