While in Jackson for a long weekend, I wanted something from a small restaurant or from a hole in the wall. Sugar's Place was as close as I was going to get on my first pass Google search. The chicken and waffle was just what I needed. Get the wings if you order this dish. I took the recommendation from the cashier and I am glad that I did. Waffle wasn't sugary. The wings were proper crispy and seasoned just right, not heavy-handed on the salt and not underwhelming either. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. Food is cooked to order, so nothing came to the table as if it had been quickly reheated or microwaved. Next time I come home to visit, this will be my destination for breakfast one of the days I'm home. It is, by far, the cutest spot in downtown Jackson, with the colorful outdoor seating. There are two menus, one on the wall and the other on the counter. The one on the wall confused me just a bit. It had an ending time for breakfast, but the guy behind the counter explained that breakfast is served all day, and the second time is when lunch starts. So, I ordered the waffle and wings, which didn't disappoint. I like a fluffy waffle, and that's what I got: easy to cut with your fork. Yes, I could have used a knife, but I know when I'm able to use my fork, the waffle is cooked at the right temperature. Now, let's get to the wings. I don't know what recipe they are using, and the staff is sure not telling. But I can tell you that the wings have the right amount of tenderness and crispness at the same time. You don't have to pull or tug. They are well-seasoned inside and out, meaning the skin. Like I mentioned before, they're tender and crispy. Now, it's a small place with plenty of individual and shared tables. Also, there's an outdoor seating area. It's a popular place, but the line moves pretty quickly. I actually found Sugar's Place on social media. It made headlines with one of the food bloggers, but from what I gathered, it was already very popular. Tried to support a black owned business while in town for a volleyball tournament but was very disappointed. I ordered a three piece fish dinner with two sides and a wing dinner with two sides. Also, I placed an order for an additional side but didn't receive anything that I asked and paid for. I only received one side which was collar greens. Yesterday I was so determined to try the Chicken & Waffles, I woke up did what I had to do for the day & headed over there. It's located in a small building right across from the law school so if you drive too quick you'll miss it. I ordered two orders of the chicken and waffle plate with fried wings. It took about 12-15 minutes for it to be ready. It was still very warm by the time I drove all the way home. The waffle is one of those large waffles that remind you of the waffles at Waffle House, but of course fluffier. It was good but it's the chicken that steals the show!! So flavorful and crispy I had to eat them by themselves with the good ole' Louisiana hot sauce. The staff was super friendly as well and the waiting area was vibrant & clean. Great lunch spot! I ordered the Grilled Shrimp Salad with the Come Back Sauce for dressing. The food was ready quickly and the staff checked in to see if we liked our food. This is a fun spot in a out of the way location. If you're at the school of law, you probably pass by Sugar's daily. If you're not at the school of law, though, I doubt you've noticed this place. I came with 3 of my kids, so we all got to sample different meals. Actually, the menu is pretty limited, so we had a lot. I went with fried fish and it was fine, but not notable. The best thing (no surprise) was the chicken and waffles. My #3 kid had that and we all sampled it. I had potato salad or maybe it was slaw. The fact that I'm not sure which tells you a bit about how it wasn't too memorable. Y'all, this place was fantastic!! Let's start with the customer service. We Texans we're passing through after a trip to Atlanta. We wanted some soul food and stumbled across this little place. The guys behind the counter were so very sweet, helpful, and patient waiting for three moms and four kids to decide on the perfect dish. I ordered shrimp, fries and macaroni and cheese, my 14 year old ordered chicken and waffles and my 11 year old ordered chicken tenders. Every single bite was amazing. We were all picking off each others plates to taste what we didn't order. I got to taste some fried okra off a friends plate and it was perfect as well. Three of the staff came out to check on us to make sure our food was the way we liked it. I was driving across country and figured that Jackson was a perfect stopping point roughly 9 hours into my journey for a breakfast. This place popped up as a local favorite so I had to give them a shot. The chicken and waffles was highly recommended and I usually don't jump for this dish because I love waffles but they've got to have some umph to them. I made it to the restaurant which is only take out. It's in the midst of a downtown area that's a little difficult to find street parking in especially on a workday. A guard let me Park in a surface lot that was likely for a government building after I told him I was just stopping in to grab food from Sugar's. He understood it would only be for about 15 minutes so he ushered me in and showed me a shortcut through an alley back over to restaurant. I ordered the chicken and waffles and it was ready in about 10 minutes or so. I got back in my car and I took it over to the old city hall building turned museum and ate it in an outdoor seating area. They gave me a fork but no napkins and an abundance of syrup one a little leaky so you can imagine the slight mess of me trying to eat it. Nevertheless, the waffle was thick but just ok in taste. The chicken was good but quite salty so it was slightly off putting. Everything is served to-go, you can eat on the patio out front which has table and chairs with umbrellas or take it away. I thought the fish was tasty, I like mine a little harder fried. So, I'll accept blame for my bad experience here since everyone seems to love it. My energy was off and I was also ticked off that the broken meter outside ate my coins, only to have another patron tell me that the City pays no mind to the meters. I went in and ordered. There were maybe two parties of two in front of me and approximately two individuals and one duo behind me. I ordered chicken strips & waffles. As I sat there for 35 minutes, I watched everyone receive and nearly finish their orders. Halfway through the wait, a man behind the counter - who didn't take my order, by the way, asked me, as if he was thinking, "darn, you still here?", "What did you order???". Finally, when it was ready, the same guy beckoned me via hand gesture to receive my order. He didn't bother to apologize or explain the wait, so I mentioned it. That's when I really became insulted, although the long wait and the beckoning was enough to make me think twice about returning. My displeasure barely parted my lips when he and the owner started in that the wait was long because of the orders ahead of me. (Guess I wasn't suppose to notice those after me). I would have been fine if they would've asked me to pardon the wait, etc. but they seemed adamant that I was tripping, so I told them I didn't want the food and was leaving. When they suggested that I take the food for free, I felt even more belittled. I paid for my food and ate a few bites in the car, I no longer wanted to be in there. After touring the Governor's mansion, we wanted to get a taste of some local food at a place that locals would typically eat. Sugar's is just a few blocks away, on a relatively quiet street. The young guy running the counter was friendly and helpful, and the service was really quick. We figured the portions would be generous (they were) so we decided to split an order of catfish with french fries and cabbage greens for the side orders. The catfish was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside and, though it was fried, was not the least bit greasy. Fries are pretty tough to mess up, but Sugar's are fantastic - nice and thick and seasoned just perfectly. The cabbage greens seemed like a home recipe and were out of this world! For dessert, we had the honeybun cake, which was excellent - moist and sweet with just the right amount of spice. The only part of the meal that wasn't perfect was the cornbread...a little dry. If you are in the vicinity of the Governor's mansion or the capital building, I highly recommend checking out Sugar's! read more

I was leaving town, and wanted some good down-home breakfast before I hit the road. When I conducted a search for breakfast restaurants, this was on the list. Because of the consistently great reviews, I chose this one. When I arrived, I was surprised to find a little storefront restaurant. To my initial dismay, they told me they had stopped serving breakfast at 10 AM, and the only served catfish, and not whiting, which is my favorite. I took a chance and ordered the catfish and shrimp combo... I forgot about the breakfast that I missed, whiting is NOT my only favorite fish, because of THIS place, and I will definitely leave town earlier the next time to see if breakfast is as amazing as lunch was! To top it off, the staff has great attitudes, and appeared to be happy in the family-owned restaurant, and the homemade Kool-Aid and tea are perfectly Southern Sweet!
