The young man at the car rental station said I needed to try this place. He said they were closed on Monday so I didn't even try to go (I don't think they were closed). I wanted to go Tuesday but coworkers didn't want to go out. Tried to go Wednesday but they were closed for dinner. My flight was leaving later in the day on Thursday and I had to try to go. Online it said they were open at 10 am. I checked out of the hotel and headed to the restaurant. There were already a lot of people waiting for them to open. To my surprise they opened at 10:30. When the doors opened people were "fighting" to get inside. This is a buffet setting. You pay before eating. To go plates are available for purchase. There is an upstairs eating area. I think there were 3 hot stations, a cold station, and a desert station and an ice cream machine. All the food looked so good. I had to get a little taste of everything. The fried chicken and fried chicken livers were Hands down my favorite things. I like greens that are tangy with a little spicy - these were not that. The cornbread was hard couldn't eat it. Everything else was ok. Nothing that I had that "gotta go back for more" feeling (except the chicken). There were so many offerings, and they have Pepsi products. I tried Mama Hamil's for the first time today and I get the hype! The food was so good. It's a good place to go if you want Southern cooking or bbq. I appreciated the many vegetables to choose from and the fried fish was delicious. They open at 4pm for dinner. We got there within 5 minutes and it was already a lot of people. There is plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs. However, for the amount of people, I do wish the buffet was spread out a bit more; it was a bit tight. Hand sanitizer at the beginning/end buffet would be nice too. I enjoyed just about everything. I thought the Mac n cheese was just okay, but I did appreciate that it was more of a homestyle baked mac. Atmosphere is very casual. The building has an old farmhouse or barn feel from the outside. I really didn't enjoy my food here and found EVERYTHING to be VERY bland. My mother and aunt love this place and when I looked at the menu I could tell I was probably not going to like the food here but I would still give it a chance. So I don't eat pork and based on the menu I assumed most of the vegetables would be full of pork and that assumption was 100% correct. I had two plates of food which probably wasn't worth the price of admission here. The two plates of food I ate here were just very bland to me and nothing I would want to eat again. My mother mentioned she thought the food was far less flavorful than it had been on her past visits. So things have change since the last time I been here. Price is up and quality is down. Still have a lot customers as before. My complaints are all the sides like mash potatoes, green beans taste like it is from a can or made from a packet. Chicken and dumplings had no meat. Ribs are salty and dry Fried chicken and bake chicken is still good. Service is still quick and nice. They have AC on the top floor now which is more comfortable than before. I recently scheduled a field trip to Mama Hamil's for a group of students aged 6-10. The price listed on the website was $11.55 plus tax for children. Just days before our visit, I called to confirm our reservation. During that call, I was informed that our students would be charged the adult price. Surprised, I asked to speak with the manager and was directed to Bailey. When I asked if she was the manager, she stated that she was the secretary but could handle my concerns. I explained that the website clearly lists a children's price and asked why my students were being charged the adult rate. She informed me that when groups come in--regardless of age--they are charged the adult price. I expressed that this policy is not stated on the website and that letters had already been sent home to parents reflecting the posted children's price. At that point, changing the cost was not feasible for our families. While Bailey apologized and said they would update the website, I shared that an apology did not resolve the issue for my students or their parents. I asked if an exception could be made given the circumstances, but she declined. I was also told that if we did not wish to pay the adult price, we could find somewhere else to eat. When I asked to speak with a manager or the owner, I was told there was no manager available and that she could not provide the owner's name. The call ended abruptly. As an educator organizing experiences for young children, clear communication and respectful customer service are extremely important. It was disappointing to encounter both a pricing discrepancy and what felt like dismissive treatment when trying to resolve the issue. I believe businesses thrive on transparency and kindness, especially when serving families and schools. I hope this feedback encourages improvements in communication and customer service practices moving forward. I have fond memories of dining at the old restaurant which was much smaller than this one but served the same great food. Fast forward to the present and the only thing that has changed is that Mama Hamil's is in a much larger building. I had lunch here earlier this week and can say this food is just as great as it ever was. Because this restaurant serves such good food it had to expand to serve its customers. Let me give an example. When I arrived last Wednesday at 11:09 am they were already slammed. The parking lot looked like a football game was being played with the number of cars there. Inside, my wait in line to pay was only about 6-7 minutes so that made me happy. The line moves fairly quickly. For lunch my price for the buffet with a drink and tax was.......$14! Yeah, that's not a typo. Then I got a plate and started visiting the various food stations for salads and other appetizers, veggies, meats, bread and desserts. I filled my plate to the hilt and then tried to find a place to sit. Most of the 2 & 4 person tables were being used so that left sitting at one of the two very long benches communal style where there were a few spaces open. It's a great way to meet people and I sat among several people all remarking how great the food here is. EVERYTHING that I ate was delicious. The meats and veggies were made just like your grandmother did and just made me smile while gorging on them. Not only is the food delicious and all you can eat but to only pay $14 total including drink and tax is a steal. For dinner the price only increases about $2 and I think they offer even more food items then. How can they do this? Mama Hamil's is a Mississippi institution and one of the best in the South. I ate here on a very busy President's Day for lunch but still had an outstanding meal to kick off a business trip in the Jackson area. The selection of food at this buffet was outstanding and pretty much everything was above average to amazing. Standouts were the fried chicken and the chicken and waffles. The creamed corn, corn slaw, ribs, and potato salad were also good. Finishing it off with some peach cobbler and vanilla soft serve was the perfect touch. The service was excellent as well, as someone came by asking what I wanted to drink almost as soon as I sat down. All this excellence for $13 for lunch(!!) which is crazy good value in this economy. I haven't been to Mama Hamil's in over three years but met a friend for lunch today. It's buffet only, which worries me some since it's a pandemic going on. But they have a sanitizer station at the beginning of the line and someone there handing out gloves, which you must where while fixing your food. This is one of the best and most comprehensive buffers around. Plenty of salad options (and yes the salads are worth getting), veggies and desserts. It's a two story building and they place is packed so you may be upstairs trying to come back down to get another plate. But the food is so worth it. The meats rotate out daily but choices range from fried or smoked chicken, ribs, pulled pork, fried gizzards and livers and sometimes dressing. Veggies options are very flavorful and you could easily do only a veggie plate and be happy. read more

I am the toughest critic of home cooked food because I ate it every day as a child. I am serious- my father is one of the best chefs that I know when it comes to southern cuisine! With that being said, I rarely enjoy any southern restaurants. They just don't compare to what I am accustomed to. However, I will say that I was impressed with this spot! First off let's start off with the ample parking they have. It is clear that this place is supported by the locals . t's my understanding that they typically have a line. When we walked in we were not necessarily greeted or given a warm welcome. I guess I was expecting that good southern hospitality At the front and to your left is where you start your dinning experience by paying! Yep they need that money up front! We opted for dinner so it was $15 per person. Dinner is from 4-8pm. Lunch is currently $12 and is served from 10:30am until 2pm. After paying, the indulgence immediately begins. Every customer is asked to wear gloves as they fix their pate from the buffet line, as well as obtain a new plate upon re-entry. There were so many food options to choose from. The items that remain the same every day are as follows Salads: Cole Slaw Potato Salad Fruit Salad Cucumber Tomato Salad Broccoli Crunch Salad Basic Tossed Salad Homemade Ranch Dressing Homemade Comeback Dressing Sides and Vegetables: Turnip Greens Cabbage Greens Black Eyed Peas Butter Beans Pole Beans Creamed Corn Rutabagas Mashed Potatoes Rice Brown Gravy (on side) Macaroni & Cheese BBQ Beans Desserts: Bread Pudding Banana Pudding Peach Cobbler Cinnamon Rolls Assorted Cakes The meat options that were available during my visit included BBQ Ribs, Fried Chicken, Smoked Chicken, Fried Livers, Fried Fish, Chicken & Dumplings. I'm sure she watching us enjoy her food. The legacy she left behind with the recipes. Where can you find Chicken and Dumpling? Here, it's here along with bbq, fish, chicken, pizza, the freshness of vegetables, and the best peach cobbler! I love the look of the two tractors out front! One was a Big Daddy tractor alongside a much smaller tractor. Pieces of farm equipment were nicely placed throughout the restaurant. In little corners, and against the walls.
