I am the toughest critic of home cooked food because I ate it every day as a child. I am serious- my father is one of the best chefs that I know when it comes to southern cuisine! With that being said, I rarely enjoy any southern restaurants. They just don't compare to what I am accustomed to. However, I will say that I was impressed with this spot! First off let's start off with the ample parking they have. It is clear that this place is supported by the locals . t's my understanding that they typically have a line. When we walked in we were not necessarily greeted or given a warm welcome. I guess I was expecting that good southern hospitality At the front and to your left is where you start your dinning experience by paying! Yep they need that money up front! We opted for dinner so it was $15 per person. Dinner is from 4-8pm. Lunch is currently $12 and is served from 10:30am until 2pm. After paying, the indulgence immediately begins. Every customer is asked to wear gloves as they fix their pate from the buffet line, as well as obtain a new plate upon re-entry. There were so many food options to choose from. The items that remain the same every day are as follows Salads: Cole Slaw Potato Salad Fruit Salad Cucumber Tomato Salad Broccoli Crunch Salad Basic Tossed Salad Homemade Ranch Dressing Homemade Comeback Dressing Sides and Vegetables: Turnip Greens Cabbage Greens Black Eyed Peas Butter Beans Pole Beans Creamed Corn Rutabagas Mashed Potatoes Rice Brown Gravy (on side) Macaroni & Cheese BBQ Beans Desserts: Bread Pudding Banana Pudding Peach Cobbler Cinnamon Rolls Assorted Cakes The meat options that were available during my visit included BBQ Ribs, Fried Chicken, Smoked Chicken, Fried Livers, Fried Fish, Chicken & Dumplings. I honestly enjoyed most of the food I tried. However, I will admit that I was not a fan of the Mac and cheese, or the black eyed peas. The peas tasted like canned peas and the Mac and cheese was not cooked the way I like it. Overall though this place was solid. Some of my favorites were the smoked chicken, potato salad ( the best I have ever had), and the fried fish. The theme at this wonderful restaurant is family, it's the perfect place for a down-home cooked meal by your Big Momma! There's a big picture of Mama Hamil's smiling. I'm sure she watching us enjoy her food. The legacy she left behind with the recipes. Where can you find Chicken and Dumpling? Here, it's here along with bbq, fish, chicken, pizza, the freshness of vegetables, and the best peach cobbler! I love the look of the two tractors out front! One was a Big Daddy tractor alongside a much smaller tractor. Pieces of farm equipment were nicely placed throughout the restaurant. In little corners, and against the walls. A drug rep brought some of Mama Hamil's food and dessert to the clinic where I was working at. Although I didn't get to try the food straight from the kitchen, it still tasted fresh and gave me the true southern comfort experience. And that pudding... is literally to die for. Mama Hamil's is a nice southern buffet. A few things change daily, but otherwise must things stay the same. I rally liked the fried chicken and barbecue. As for sides, I enjoyed the turkey dressing and the okra. My least favorite item that I tried I thought were sweet potatoes and ended up being rutabagas. They had no flavor whatsoever. Otherwise, most of the veggies were pretty good. For desert, you need to try the banana pudding or get some peach cobbler with a little ice cream on top. The buffet does come with the drink of your choice so that's nice for the tea and soft drink people. We went on a Saturday for lunch and they were at capacity when we arrived. Mama Hamil's is so good for southern comfort food!! I loved the turnip greens and chicken and dumplings! The servers were swift to assist when need be and the atmosphere of the restaurant felt like a celebration! Like after a wedding, everyone is happy and hungry! Crowded during week for lunch, serve yourself with wait staff to get drinks and extras. Slightly pricey for a buffet but generally worth the price. I like it and recommend it for a change at lunch. A very cute Buffett in Madison that appears to be located inside an old church. The ribs & chicken were very flavorful & it was nice to see such a variety of traditional southern sides. I tried a small taste of everything & my favorites were the Lima beans (I've never tasted them that way & now im craving them!) their green beans & a broccoli slaw. The pizza was also good as was the fried fish. The only down side is that it did get dry from being under the heat lamp HOWEVER the flavor was nothing short of delicious. All the food is hot and fresh and so extremely tasty!!! It had great ratings and we can see why!!!!! Our two "servers" handling out section were phenomenal. Just wonderful attention to all of our needs and all the others in the area. I haven't seen such a hard working staff and just such friendly attitudes. (We sat in the upper section on 6/18 for dinner I wish I could remember names but they deserve a shout out!!!!) I give this place a 10 out of 5 stars!!!!! You must stop in!!!!! I took a group of 50 to eat lunch today. I tried calling 3 times that morning to give them a heads up but, they never answered the phone. When we pulled up in our motor coach a gentleman came out to meet us. He seemed less than excited for us to be there. After a few minutes of standing in line to pay, he had us go with him to an overflow dining room. After we were seated there he seemed to relax and was a little more welcoming. But the lady who came in to help him was never welcoming. She didn't appear to be having a good day. I'm not sure if she is always like that. I tried to reassure her that we were not in a hurry but she never lightened up. After everyone had been taken to the register a few at a time to pay, she asked two or three more times if everyone had paid. I finally asked if she knew that the gentleman who helped us at first had told me that the driver and the tour leader received a complimentary meal. She didn't seem very happy about that. Seems she should have been more hospitable to those who brought in 50 people to eat at your restaurant. The food was good. My favorite was the mashed potatoes and gravy with the fried gizzards and the ribs. The banana pudding was delicious. read more

I dined inside (two trips to the buffet) and took home a to-go container for the same dine-in price. Be sure to get dessert with your to-go order. Place is delicious every time I go frankly. Although, I have never been that huge of a fan of country food, especially if it isn't from in town, but this place is great especially if you stick with the foods you know are good like the Mac and cheese, and lentils. Fried chicken here is real good as well, and so is the deserts. My only complaint about this place would be the crowd is always too big. If there was a way to decrease the amount of people that seem to be consistently packed into this place that would be ideal. Maybe open a new location. read more

Oh my heavens to Betsy! Best.Southern.Buffet.Ever. Just about every great southern comfort food you can think of is offered here and all for one great price. It's only about $9 per person for the buffet and that includes your drink (either tea or soda). The chicken, ribs, and chicken & dumplings are amazing. Juicy chicken, fall off the bone ribs, and chicken & dumplings that aren't quite as awesome as my mimi's, but then again, no one can make them like her. Still no complaints from me! Then there's all the fixins like mashed potatoes & gravy, mac & cheese, baked beans, butter beans, blackeyed peas, okra, creamed corn, etc. etc. etc. The creamed corn is so amazing I could seriously sit down and eat a plate of just that! I always go back for 2nds and 3rds of the creamed corn. That stuff is seriously like crack! Not that I've ever tried crack... I'm just sayin'! LOL :P Then there's the dessert. I am a huge, huge fan of bread pudding. I've tried a lot of bread pudding in my lifetime. If I were to give a blue ribbon award for the best bread pudding I've ever tasted, Mama Hamil would win hands down! Yes, it's *that* good. I am not kidding! They have quite a selection of desserts, but since I'm all about the bread pudding, I've never paid attention to any of the others. This place is always packed no matter what day of the week it is. They do have some booths, but they also have long picnic style tables inside. So don't be shy about sitting down with strangers to eat. Everyone will be too busy digging into their food to talk. The servers that come around to bring clean plates, remove dirty plates, and refill your drinks are just the sweetest and have that true southern hospitality just oozing out of them and there's not one single thing fake about it. You don't have to worry about your drink being empty either.... they stay on top of that! If you ever find yourself in the Jackson, MS area, do yourself and those you are with a favour and have a meal (or two or three) at Mama Hamil's! It's in Madison (just north of Jackson), so you may have to drive a bit to get there, but you'll thank me in the end and say it was well worth the effort! If you're looking for some downright Southern comfort food, this is your best bet! I've been to two other Southern buffets in MS and this was my favorite. Compared to Two Sister's Kitchen, Mama Hamil's selection can't be beat and it was cheaper too. If I was going to compare the fried chicken by itself, Two Sister's wins just by a hair. The flavors are really great but unfortunately the chicken wasn't hot at Mama Hamil's. Even though I got there right when it opened! All the side dishes were really great: bbq beans, creamed corn, mac n cheese, lima beans, fried okra, cucumber and tomato salad, and black eyed peas. The baked beans were my favorite. The only disappointment in side dishes was the mashed potatoes! It tasted like it came straight out of a box. That was a big no no! The desserts I tried were the red velvet cake and banana pudding. They weren't the best but it was still pretty good. If you liked sweet tea, there's is pretty darned good here too. Overall, the value and selection at Mama Hamil's were the best. The service was very friendly and there was plenty of seating and room to move around. Just make sure you get here before 11:30, even on a weekday. read more
