First impression was negative because the gentleman taking our order was rude. When he brought our food, my mom explained to him that she would not be coming back simply based on his attitude. He apologized for his rudeness and even smiled. She decided that she'd go back. The food was ok. My mom said the chicken on her chicken and waffles wasn't seasoned well. The cheese grits were really cheesy, almost too cheesy and lacked salt. My breakfast toaster was good, but nothing special. Maybe breakfast isn't their thing. We'll go back for lunch one day and see if that's better. Definitely won't be going back for breakfast. read more

I never write yelp reviews but felt compelled to write about Sugar's because not a lot of people know about this place but everyone should eat here! I am business traveler to Jackson and am constantly on the hunt for good fried catfish, meaning, I go to a lot of places! The catfish here is among the best! The green beans were divine, great seasoning and flavor. I liked my meal so much I came back the next day for breakfast and had some awesome grits. The service is great. It's a family owned business where the folks there are super friendly and will chat you up as your food is prepared. The only bummer is that they are only open until 2 pm, but was pleased to hear they are going to open from 6pm to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. I hope more people support so that this place can stay around forever! read more

The staff is very friendly and helpful. However, the food I've found only "ok". I've eaten here a handful of times. If you go in for breakfast and get a toaster sandwich it's pretty good but order from the lunch menu and beware of the frozen food. I don't mind the prepackaged frozen food if the prices are adjusted appropriately but when I pay $7 for a burger alone, I expect more than a tasteless frozen patty from Sysco. The fries were crinkle cut from a bag as well. I have also had a plate lunch that included frozen prepackaged fried okra and flavorless canned green beans. The chicken pasta was ok but once again, felt over charged. I've heard that the catfish is good and would love to know if it's seasoned or breaded in house. I'll have to ask if I ever decide to try it. So in conclusion, Sugar's is an ok place to eat if you're nearby and need a quick bite. Just be prepared to pay more than you'd like for prepackaged frozen food. read more

When I tell y'all I got my soul at Sugars I'm only speaking from experience. Went with my sister so of course we tried each other's food so I'm going to tell you about each item I tried. Chicken wings: so so so good. I automatically asked for a dipping sauce but babbbbby it was not needed! They were seasoned to perfection! Yams: I haven't had my grandmothers yams for a long time but if this wasn't as close to hers I don't know what is life! They were beyond yummy. Catfish: booooooooyyyyyy I don't know what kind of magic they put in that fried catfish but just know it is fit for the gods. The fries where hot and fresh. And the koolaid! Ooooh yes perfect. I was beyond full when I left but I made sure I grabbed a slice of honey bun cake that will go very well with my dinner tonight. If you haven't been to Sugar's Place yet then you are missing out! The waitstaff and cooks and just everyone that worked there were the sweetest and nicest! I am a sucker for great customer service and they have it in spades. I'm responding today because the rude employees rubbed me the wrong way and the feedback is much needed. Initially I called to find out if breakfast was still being served because I'm from out of town and did not know their standard. So I called and a gentleman answered the phone sounded demotivated but I disregarded that since it is morning, so I proceeded to ask were they still serving breakfast and the gentleman replied "why" and that struck a nerve but I remained calm and expressed why. Then I went to the establishment and when I got there and proceeded to give my order the employee tells me "we're out of that it's lunch now". But he told me over the phone otherwise. I didn't even waste my time with the gentleman because they were ignorant and not professional at all. The employees need to be trained on proper customer service and etiquette because dealing with the type of employees on payroll now, they're gonna lose a lot of money. I wanted to spend my money with them but the rude employees deterred me from doing so. It's extremely disappointing that I even had to write this because I'm not a fan of talking down on any business or organization; totally disappointed!!!! read more

Two words: Honeybun Cake. I know, you might think the two are not meant to be combined together in a pan of divine loveliness. But, I am here to tell you- you, my friend, are wrong. It is the best thing ever. I am unsure why these two confectionate creation have never popped into my mind to be placed together. Yes, confectionate is the word/non-word that is necessary to describe this mix of gooey goodness. A fresh batch is made daily and they sell out quickly. The place reminds you of real home cooking. The catfish is always tasty, the chincken is as Southern as you could imagine and their yams are something that would make your own grandmother do a double take. The atmosphere is like a true neighborhood lunch spot. You never know who you will run into and chances are you will know them. It is a family owned business and the family can be found throughout the restaurant including behind the scenes, at the register, and often a part of the customers having a quick lunch bite. I truly enjoy every time I pass through to eat inside or pick up a plate to go. If you have not ventured into this soulful place, you are truly missing out of a classic Jackson gem. read more

Place is quiet and cute. The man at the restore had a lot of personality! Loved his enthusiasm. I ordered the Belgian waffle before heading into work and really enjoyed the packaging. The waffle itself was slightly soggy but was packed with flavor. The syrup tasted like actual maple syrup instead of imitation corn syrup. Will I be back to try more? Definitely read more

This is the best kept secret in Jackson. Open for breakfast and lunch. I was never a grit fan until I tried Sugar's. I don't know what they do differently, but OMG. Now I love grits, but only theirs! Same thing applies to their mac and cheese. Their greens are cleaned beautifully and every single thing they serve is cooked with love and that comes through when you taste it. They have daily specials - the chicken and dumplings dinner is to die for. LOVE the grilled catfish and fried pork chop. Excellent black eyes peas and fried okra. Shrimp poboy is stuffed full of shrimp and delicious. All sandwiches I have ordered have the bread grilled until crunchy but not saturated in butter so stays crisp and doesn't get soggy. This jewel in the heart of Jackson makes my day. I have never had something from Sugar's that I did not enjoy. I am particularly fond of their burgers, but their soul food is spectacular, too. It's convenient for people who work downtown and frequented by the students of MC Law, just across the street. On a warm, sunny day, you can sit outside at the umbrella covered tables. The best part is that you can get a quality meal for under $10. I highly recommend Sugar's, and I go there every time I'm in Jackson. Keep up the good work, guys! read more

I was in Jackson, MS for our 49th Biennial Convention at the Marriott Downtown and had the pleasure of dining at Sugar's Place. I have to give the food a 4-Star rating. I am from Mississippi and did not realize how much I missed being at home. The food was delicious. The fried okra and turnip greens was something I had missed since leaving Mississippi. All I can say is if anyone is in Jackson, MS, please go by and taste the food there. You will not be disappointed. Although she is only open from 7-3pm, Monday-Friday, it is still the place to go.
