I enjoyed the ambiance, food, and service. They also have an extensive wine selection. The pianoist was a great addition that set a nice mood. I love the diverse crowd, and when I've come here its neither too crowded or too empty. You have some great seating options whether it's at the bar, tables near the bar close to the pianist, or on the other side of the restaurant. You also have a nice selection of appetizers and food selections. You can't go wrong with anything you try. Sat at the bar and got the ahi tuna salad. The bartender wasn't very attentive, but I wasn't drinking, so it didn't really matter. The bread came to the table warm, but it looked undercooked. It didn't really have much of a crust--the outside of the loaf was white. What bothered me the most though was that the tuna salad was just drenched in dressing. It was really unfortunate because I think I would have enjoyed it. But it was really not edible. I assumed the dressing would come on the side, so I didn't even think to specify that. I recently went to a mystery night event at Char. They hold them once a month. I had a great time with my wife. We found the food to be very good (options of steak, fish or chicken). The appetizer seafood gumbo was excellent. I actually want to go back just to have the gumbo which I am told is a regular item on the menu. The performance was funny and very entertaining. The service was great. If you go be prepared to spend approximately $200, particularly if you order wine. The meals for the show are about $50 per person. A $50 bottle of wine and the gratuity will put you at about $180. That said, I would definitely do it again and if you have never done it...it is worth it. read more

Reservations were made online. We arrived early and were immediately seated which is a major plus. The front house staff is friendly and our server was very attentive. We ordered drinks and the bar couldn't make mine (Black Orchid) due to lack of ingredients, and I replaced it with the Wheatley Berry Mary and it was okay. Last weekend we were in Jackson for an event again and stopped back into Char for the second time. First time I had a filet, this time the blackfish. Again I was impressed and delighted with the food but more so with the spectacular, warm service-- Kathryn is a picture of grace and charm. She will provide you with insightful recommendations and the feeling of being the most important guest in the place. Hubby and I were in Jackson for his business and we chose Char from the reviews on Yelp...and they are open on Sunday nights. We split a wedge salad with a delicious dressing made in house. So good that we saved a little for the bread. Their bread is bit tough, chewy, and a little tasteless. I know some like that kind of bread, but it's hard on my TMJ. For our meal we shared the Surf and Turf special of a filet mignon, crab cake and grilled shrimp. Our choice of side was the Asparagus and Mushroom Au Gratin. The restaurant apparently got its name from how it cooks it meat. Our steak was "blackened" and I had a few bites of nasty tasting burnt meat. I'm glad we chose the Asparagus and Mushroom Au Gratin. It was delicious. We like to split meals in order to save room for dessert. We decided on the Blue Berry Bread Pudding. We often choose bread puddings or creme brûlée if it's available. Every time I've ordered bread pudding it was served warm (or hot) so I was disappointed that theirs was served cool. It does have a pleasant taste but I missed the warmth of one of my favorite comfort foods. But I do want to compliment our waitress, Lauren, who gave us excellent service. Food is very good, waitstaff is friendly and checks on you a good bit. We got the redfish with a crab cake with a lemony sauce. Quite tasty. Drinks are STOUT and it was worth the $17 each for us. We drive by Char everyday on the way home, and last night we finally broke down and tried it for dinner. Everything was perfectly seasoned, prepared correctly, and down eight delicious. Don't miss the sautéed crab claws and the creamed spinach! It's a dressy atmosphere (which I love is followed and enforced). We started with drinks and the crab claws. I went for the "Mississippi mule" which has cathead honeysuckle vodka, strawberry simple syrup, and ginger beer. My husband is an old fashioned connoisseur, so he opted for that. It's made with Knob Creek if you don't specify differently, and it's a very large glass, but has some soda water in it which mellowed it out. ($11-$12). I asked the waiter if he had a preference on crab claw preference, and he recommended half fried, half sautéed. DO THIS! I've only ever had them fried, and the sautéed ones blew us away. They're in a delicious garlic butter and so full of flavor. For our entrees, we each got a special. I got the triple tail fish special (served w lump crab meat, fried green tomatoes, arugula salad, and a sriracha aioli) and my husband got the filet special (8oz with a no-filler crab cake, shrimp topper, and a side). The specials were really great deals considering all of the toppings. We split each entree so we could each enjoy the two specials. There wasn't one thing I would have changed. Perfect dinner! Oh, and the creamed spinach is the best I've ever had so definitely get that as your side! Ordered 2 cowboy steaks, fried green tomatoes, and a lemonade. Our steaks were burnt to a crisp. One of our steaks was sitting in a pool of grease. The steaks didn't taste like anything. They were bland and BURNT. Our total was $131 for 2 meals we couldn't enjoy. The mashed potatoes tasted like box potatoes. For that to be an upscale restaurant it was TERRIBLE. Worst place in Jackson. I come here twice a week for a group dinner. Always a mess, always confusions with the order, never a clean service. I'm vegetarian, and since they don't even offer a single vegetarian option in the menu, I have to ask, almost beg for a vegetarian dinner, a simple meal made from the vegetables used on the sides.....but they served me the left overs from other clients plates, with meat debrisess. Disgusting. This place is just a money collector, they don't serve food, they just throw stuff out of the kitchen. The food is poor and not reliable. Char added their own tip to my single-meal takeout order. After waiting almost an hour for my takeout order, I look at the ticket to see that Char has added their own full tip to my takeout ticket. I thought tipping was supposed to be an option that I decided on---Especially for takeout orders. I'm not ever sure if it is legal to add a tip to a single meal like this without permission. Either way, I don't appreciate this practice and don't plan on returning. read more
