Amazing steak house. Yes, it's pricy, but everything was just great. They were very accommodating of us being a party of 10, there's plenty of space and multiple rooms so to speak so it doesn't feel crowded, and our tables were very spacious which I appreciated. The server we got was very knowledgeable about the menu and accommodated our request to be on separate checks which was great. I ended up getting an 8oz filet cooked medium rare which was cooked to perfection. The steak was absolutely delicious. Mushrooms were great with dusting wine and pepper taste which I enjoyed. Scalloped potatoes were so good as well. I don't think there was anyone in our party who thought the experience was not 5/5! Since I'm not big on beef, I've never been to Koestler Prime but this is my mom's favorite place, this is where we took her for her birthday dinner. The ambiance is what you would expect. Low lighting, white tablecloths and excellent service. I hate I can't remember my server's name because he should teach a master class on providing service. I ordered the salmon, cooked medium, with a side of asaparus. My mom and sister both got the 8oz filet. Mom got her's cooked medium with mushrooms, while my sister did medium rare with a side of housecut fries. All entrees come with a salad, and we all three picked the vinaigrette dressing. Salad and dressing needed salt. I hate I didn't go with another dressing because I would have really enjoyed my salad more. My salmon and asparagus were very tasty. My mom said her steak melted in her mouth. The side of fries were huge so we all ate some. They were really good! Momma and my sister got the bread pudding and I went with the chocolate chess pie for dessert. You can tell they make the desserts as they were soooo good! Wait. You just gave Koestler Prime 3 stars? Yep. Would have given 3.5 but it doesn't allow that. Let's start with the service. Jake was our server and he gets a 10/10. Very personable. Did not hover, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We're going to cut straight to the food because that is our issue. For appetizers we had the hot tamales, bacon, and crabcake. The hot tamales were fabulous. I'm not a fan of that type of thick, sliced bacon, but everyone else at the table loved it. The crab cake was a huge disappointment. Entirely too much filler and while the sauce was nice and sweet due to the sweetcorn and vanilla, it overpowered the crabcake. We all agreed that we felt they were trying to offset the fact that the crabcake was mostly filler. My husband decided he wanted several appetizers. Why he would do that he would do that at a nice steakhouse is still a mystery, but it gave us an idea of what various items on their menu were like. He ordered crawfish tails, crawfish bisque, and barbecue shrimp. he also ordered a side of onion rings. One of our friends ordered the fried shrimp with french fries, his wife ordered the fillet cooked, medium with the gratin potatoes and the pasta with cream sauce, I ordered the tenderloin tips with the peas and carrots. The sides are pretty much large enough to share with 2 to 3 people. Starting with the good, the fillet was wonderful. It was cooked great; super tender and flavorful. This was no fault of Jake, but my tender tips came out, medium well to well done. As you can imagine, they tasted like powder so he got me the appropriate medium, rare cook. Flavorful and had lots of onions and mushrooms. The shrimp were delicious, the pasta with cream sauce was very bland. The best side that we had were the gratin potatoes. The onion rings were good, but they were not even warm when they came out, and the french fries appeared to be house cut, but were overcooked. Honestly, the french fries were dark brown, like the oil was old. This is what seemed to be the greatest atrocity of the whole night. There was no flavor to this crawfish bisque. It was literally like sipping warm cream from a bowl. Frankly, the bisque was disgusting. Mike said the barbecue shrimp were good, but it was interesting that you have a skillet full of a wonderfully flavored liquid with onions and mushrooms that you were not quite sure what to do with once you eat the three shrimp. We all enjoyed some of his fried crawfish and they were good. I ate two of the snap peas on my side and left the rest on the plate. They were so stringy that you could not eat them. I would imagine a restaurant of this caliber would know that you need to remove the string from sugar snap peas, but the flavor was delicous if you like eating thread. We were too full for dessert so we can not speak to that. So our thoughts are that this level of restaurant should not have hit miss items in the menu. Honestly, Ely's is better. Of all the times we have eaten at Ely's, we have never felt that anything was less than amazing. Interesting that the families are related. Def not using family recipes. Started with cocktails. All were great. We even ordered a second due to them being delicious. Will we give this place another try? Absolutely not. I like a steak that is first a quality cut, seasoned only with salt and cooked medium rare with a deep caramel colored sear not burned black and with a clear beef taste, not butter. At Koestler's the steak quality varies, they are seared until there is a lot of black char and they are drenched in butter. Probably the best thing on the menu is the fried shrimp. I have been to this restaurant several times and I usually have a great experience. Tonight was a mixed bag... There were three in our party. To start with, it felt like a hot sauna in the restaurant. We ordered the crab cake, crab claws and escargot for appetizers. The sauce on the crab cake was down right horrible... think chalk, mustard, and perfume mixed together...yuck.... I wanted to tell our waiter but the other two in my party told me to keep my mouth shut... I ordered a medium rare filet... In my opinion the steak was rare.. One of us ordered a ribeye with crab meat. I have to say there was an abundance of crab meat. We had spinach au gratin and French fries for sides. The French fries are fabulous. My other gripe is that my I used my knife to further cut my salad. When the salad plate was cleared my knife went with it so I was left with out a knife when my steak was served. I had to ask for a knife. Speaking of knives.... I love when a steakhouse uses substantial steak knife. Unfortunately Koestler does not have substantial knives. I love a meal on white table clothes. There are white table clothes but the table has glass over the top.... In my opinion having the glass top means the staff should be extra diligent in clearing plates and glasses. We came just before the closed, and we were not dressed nearly appropriately because we are from hundreds of miles away and had no idea there was a dress code. The hostess and manager graciously allowed us to dine regardless of my t-shirt and ratty jeans (I travel from work and hadn't changed before we -arrived.) I much wanted to enjoy Koestlers. For 20 years I have dined all over Jackson (and the nation) with clients, colleagues, and friends....4-7 days a month for 20+ years in Jackson. There are so many wonderful, local options....in Jackson area. Took a friend to Koestlers about 7 pm yesterday...this place is where Ruth's Chris was, and they were not fabulous, but we'e consisten. Walked in to see if there were 2 seats at bar....completely ignored by 3 hostesses to which I said, "Good evening, we'll head to the bar"...silence. 2 seats just opened. After 8 hour drive we were thirsty and hungry.....promptly approached by a bartender with "you know what you want to drink?"....no hello, welcome, zero. 2 dirty, dry, blue cheese olive martinis and crawfish tails, please. Martinis weren't dirty (crystal clear) and were heavy on vermouth - opposite of order. Crawfish were tiny (more batter than tail), no garnish at all, small.portion, small container of what tasted like ketsup. Another bartender who was refreshingly polite with a bright smile....kindly added bit of olive juice and shook the drinks. Dinner was ribeye, scalloped potatoes, and Brussel sprouts. $68 ribeye (came w salad) was inferior to any fine restaurant in town....and, sadly, any local.hotel I have dined in. Salad was a single type of lettuce, a lone (sad), small slice of tomato, less onion that on a McDonald's burger, and a dollop of dressing on top. Brussel sprouts were baked, puffy, tastless. Potatoes were fine....just fine. We left half of our food....no, didn't want a box. It was an expensive, tasteless, dinner and poor a start to a few enjoyable days with friends before doctor's appointment Monday. As we left, I said, "Thank you....good evening" to the same 3 hostess.....they were busy chatting with themselves and said nothing...same as when we entered. Fellow.patrons in Jackson, as always, friendly, engaging, and polite....great people here. My rating would.have been 1 star if not for the kind bartender that for an unknown reason stepped.in to assist on a complete fail... I worked in restaurants and bars growing up. Then, I had a very gracious expense account throughout a career as a corporate executive. But this was to be a night w a friend and a delicious dinner close to our hotel. We went for our anniversary dinner before going to see a movie. We were immediately sat and ordered our drinks and appetizer (lobster roll- meh) that took a while to get to the table. Our waitress told us she was a little off that night but we rolled with it. Ordered our dinner- salmon, halibut both topped with crabmeat and side of scalloped potatoes with the amaretto cheesecake and bread pudding- then that took forever, so finally after being there for a little over an hour we asked them to just box it up because we had to go. We get home and don't have the scalloped potatoes we ordered and don't have the crabmeat toppings on our fish. The manager berated my 80 year old dad for not liking his steak Which was all the steaks were over cooked or either undercooked, but he berated him and told him he was going to take the steak home with him have to pay for it, which didn't matter cause we didn't ask him to take it off the ticket but he felt like he needed to be an asshole today and came back twice to make sure we understood how angry he was. Rude and uncalled for !!!! Now I understand why they had no wait and the restaurant I wanted to go to had a 45 minute wait (Caet). We had a great dining experience here on Monday. Six of us came in at 6 p.m. for a private work dinner in the Boardroom. Pace was our server and did a fantastic job taking care of us. He was attentive, good humored and made some great recommendations on wine and bourbon, and again when it came time to order entrees. He checked in on us regularly, but never interrupted our shop-talk conversations -- a great quality you only find in experienced professionals. At the end of our meal, he was courteous to point out that we hadn't reached the private room's minimum and made sure we left with our money's worth. The food was delicious. We started with the Escargot, Carpaccio and a bacon appetizer that was on rotation. My entree was the smaller (yet massive) NY Strip with mushrooms added.
