This place is an absolute treasure. The interior and exterior of this place couldn't have changed much since the 1800s and it's amazing for that. The food is worth the drive too. You can taste it's very high quality and the chef knows what he's doing. If you're in the area it's worth the drive read more

Had dinner at Gibbes on Saturday nite, Aug 29. First the good news: I had lamb chops that were EXCELLENT. Now the bad news: the atmosphere/ambiance is TERRIBLE! Very crowded and very noisy and had to share a table with strangers. Food is served on paper plates yet prices are high ($55 for filet, $45 for lamb). My wife's filet mignon was marinated, which is an odd way to serve a premium cut. After dinner, had to stand in a long line to pay the tab by cash or check since they don't take credit cards. Overall, I'm glad we tried it but it's not worth the drive and the hassle read more

We arrived at 5pm and it was already crowded. We were seated immediately and waited for a server. The lamb chops were small, dry and my wife's steak had no flavor. Very disappointed in the service and quality of the food. Definitely not worth the drive or cost. read more

Service was great and always is, we got seated (7) and took drink orders at the same time. when they brought the drinks in just a few minutes and everyone was read to order. 6 of us got steaks a couple of filets and the rest ribeye's all cooked just as ordered. read more

What a unique place. Fine dining served on paper plates. The food is incredible. I ordered a pork chop, sweet potato and green beans. It was cooked perfectly. The only thing you need to be prepared for is they take cash only. read more

Wow a very nice place , staff were quick and friendly the food was excellent!!!! Great atmosphere, would love to live near here so I could go back more often!!! It is definitely worth the drive off the beaten path, if your close you should definitely visit its with it read more

Delicious steak and large side portions. Food is wonderful. Atmosphere is cluttered and grubby but I get that is their shtick. We ate here in August which I would not recommend due to the lack of air conditioning. I had sweat dripping down my back before our food arrived. I'd go back for the food in the cooler months. Cash only. Grab your beer on the honor system and turn in your caps when you go up to the old timey register to pay. read more

CASH or CHECK only. No CC. As long as you pass along the CC fees to the customer, why not CC? It may be that they have almost no Internet or cellular service to validate transactions. Advice: Find out their hours of operation and get there WHEN THEY OPEN otherwise you're in for a LONG wait. We arrived 10 min after they opened and were there two hours. When we left there were 50 peoole outside waiting. Steak was "OK". Tasted like it was Select grade. Definitely not Choice or Prime. Shrimp was not good. The winner at our table...the pork chop. You'll eat on paper plates for about $50-$75 per person. read more

This might be in the top 5 best meals I've had in my life. It is so unassuming when you walk up, and even inside it looks more like an old time store than a 5 star restaurant. It's BYO for whiskey and wine, but they have beers and seltzers for purchase. We started with the spinach dip, which was served with bagel chips and it was okay but I'd skip the appetizer for the main dishes (and desserts). I can't say enough about the ribeye - it was cooked to perfection, and the fat caps were so juicy my mouth is watering thinking about it. All the desserts were made by a relative/friend of the business and the buttermilk pie and bread pudding were favorites among my group. Lastly, service was great and attentive and my favorite part was the kitty that strolls around the dining area. The night combined all my favorite things: good food, wine, and CATS. We will definitely be back. read more

I highly recommend Gibbs steakhouse in Lena, MS. It's a long drive from everywhere but it's so worth it. The steaks, lamb, redfish and sides are out of this world. The meat is cooked on an open flame giving it incredible taste and texture. The service is friendly and fast. The building is "vintage" and a cat runs the place. Beer is on the honor system. Come with cash or a check, they don't take cards. They have live music most nights which is a nice touch. You owe it to yourself to try Gibbs steakhouse at least once. You tastebuds will thank you read more

Nice drive out tonight for a special occasion. Has been a few years since our last visit. Steaks were excellent. Paper plates just are not ideal for serving steak...they do not hold the heat so steaks go cold very quickly . For the price the bread should be a better choice served. Pleasant drive and good food but not better than Shapleys, Katherine's or Koestler. read more

Another trip to Learned and another amazing rack of lamb. The staff is so attentive and pleasant that the wait was more manageable. Two filets and a strip were also ordered at my table and all were very pleased. Until next time Gibbes.. read more

This 1890s old general store in the middle of nowhere down atmospheric narrow roads in the haunted night woods is the quintessential country Mississippi dinner experience. It ain't cheap. Bring cash. Paper plates. Expect it very busy. Maybe go late. Local young beautiful farm kids on dates to the old dad's birthday party. Superb ribeye and pound cake to sea food. Paper menu. Get your own beer from the several coolers at door and save the bottle caps to take to cashier after. Honor system. Pickup trucks. Beyond wonderful. One of the better steaks in Central Mississippi. The rustic charm of the place, to the only take cash , no credit cards, take you back in time . The service is excellent, the only downside is they do not take reservations. Nether the less the wait is pleasant , sitting out on a true country porch. BYOB, and they serve beer also. read more

First, you cannot beat the location and vibe of an old country store in a town long lost. It also serves up delicious steaks and fish too. Don't forget the sides and apps. Most of my group had steaks and they were tasty and cooked as ordered. A few of us had the fish and I highly recommend it too. The service is excellent. It's such a laid back atmosphere focused on food and fun so be sure to take a group and don't be in a hurry. Enjoy your time out in the country. Cheers! read more

You will never have a better rack of lamb served on a paper plate! Such an amazing atmosphere and the people are incredible.

The food was excellent, friendly servers, beautiful old country store . A lot of different food options.

This place might not be for everyone. As one of our party stated: "$40 steaks on paper plates". It's not some fancy big city steakhouse with fine China, leather seats and linen tablecloths. It can get a little chaotic on a busy weekend, and you may have to wait a few minutes for your table to open up. It's worth a wait, especially if you treat the wait as part of the party. H D Gibbes is not "faux country" a la Cracker Barrel, it's the real thing. It's an ancient general store, it may be drafty but it's comfortable and infinitely fascinating to see the details around the store. Live music completes the experience. It's a fun, high energy, casual place. The steaks are quality and are a reasonable value for the price. The real star here might be the lambchops, either as an appetizer or an entree. My wife went with the shrimp, it was fresh, well-seasoned, and a generous portion. I went with the Rib-eye. It came cooked perfectly to the medium I ordered. The rest of our big party were also happy with their dinners. The side orders were solid, and all was served promptly and hot. Our two waitresses hustled and kept us supplied with iced tea and topped waters but were never intrusive. You may be seated on a long table near complete strangers on a busy night but enjoy the atmosphere. Just remember to bring cash. read more

Steaks had no flavor. Several other tables were served before we were even though we ordered before them. The salad was delicious.

Drove 45 miles and paid $25 for the Gulf Shrimp...ended up as 9 small shrimp with little flavor. Took an hour to get here and an hour to get home. Not worth it. Over rated and over priced. read more

They take cash and checks only! On a regular basis, we drive 45 minutes and wait another 30 to snag a table on a Friday or Saturday night - it's THAT good! The steaks are excellent and the sides homemade. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered but if there is a special "off the menu" side, order it - you won't be sorry! You'll be stuffed at the end of the meal but DO NOT MISS DESSERT! We always get ours packaged to go and eat it at home because we're too full right after dinner. Desserts are also homemade! They have ice cold long necks throughout the restaurant - just grab what you're looking for. If you want wine (or something stronger), bring your own and they provide the glasses. The current state of the economy has hit them hard and they are extremely understaffed. So much that 1/2 the dining room was empty with a long waitlist. Their staff is hustling but there's only so much 3 people can do on a Friday night with 20 tables. Bottom line: Go hungry, but patient. Enjoy a cold beverage on the porch while you wait for a table. Enjoy sports on the tv and the live music while waiting for your food. Enjoy an amazing meal, JUST like grandma made (if your grandma grilled excellent steaks!) Our favorites: Filet & Ribeye Salad with blue cheese crumbles & Comeback Baked potato loaded, spinach casserole, potato casserole, squash casserole Buttermilk Pie & Funeral Brownie read more

As for the FOOD! 5 stars!!! Let me state my only complaint 1st! There serve you on paper plates! I diss like this because Chinet paper plates absorb everything!!! So the plates soaks up everything running out or off the the steak! They should switch to plastic disposables or something else. Plus they put the food on 2/3 plates so I don't know if it's really cost saving even though it may be more effective for cleaning and maintenance. Now on to the food! Great! This steak is most definitely grilled! We ordered three ribeyes, one New York strip, and a plate of lamb chops for the table! We had the green beans, potato casserole, baked potatoes and salads as our sides. Everything was great! The char on the steaks was superior! I ordered the Lamb chops medium well because my 6 year old was eating with us so they were more done than I like but still Great!!! And they cut the rack up for us! Even better! I recommend the food when you want a real grilled steak done right! And all the cuts were tender! There's no way they don't sell Prime cuts! Two things! They don't take credit/debit cards! But they still accept checks and cash! And it's an old country store so you will be seated where ever they can seat you. That may be a table or it may be a picnic style high top table shared with most other patrons! It's an experience EVERYONES super nice! When you arrive go to the cashier and put your name on the list and just wait. They open at 4:30 and if you don't want to wait long be there at 4:00! We got there at 5:18 and probably waited till almost 6. And everything's fresh and cooked to order so... it's not coming out in 10minutes like a chain restaurant! Just relax and enjoy! P.S. there is a big Black lab that sits under the end of the table! I'm afraid of dogs and I think he sensed that and he moved away from my leg and I forgot he was there! I can say that's the 1st dog I've ever liked!!! I usually have to beg people to move their dog away from me! read more

The atmosphere was fun. The love music was really good. Our steaks were perfectly cooked. The sides were delicious. We couldn't decide on which dessert, so we got all 4! They were all equally good in their own way, but enjoyed the buttermilk pie the best. My husband's favorite was the bread pudding. I definitely recommend this place, and I will be coming back. read more

The scallops were the worst I've had at any restaurant inside and outside the US. Don't get the scallops.

We have been here several times! Each time deliciously perfect! Husband always with filet, squash casserole & the sinful sweet potato with butter, brown sugar & cane syrupI mean you just NEED to have it! I always get the same thing Rack of Lamb! Restaurant etiquette out the window! Get those hands dirty, pick those bad boys up and clean those bones good! spinach casserole-yummy!! A friend first time there had a rib eye, the cant say no sinful sweet potato lol & spinach casserole! We each had dessert. Husband same as always Buttermilk Pie. All their desserts made in house and different. I had the Lemon cheesecake-tasted like lemon meringue on top of a perfect cream cheesecake with graham crust & friend had carrot cake cupcake! Sorry forgot to take pictures of desserts Bring cash!! no cards!! Absolutely a MUST eat in Mississippi!! read more

So I know a lot of people love this location but I am not in to paying these prices and having to eat on paper plates with plastic forks and knives. The steaks were good, the sides were great, but I was just over it all at the end. I broke 4 forks and 2 knives and cut through my plate, not because the food was tough or bad but because the plasticware and paper plates were so cheap. It did have a live band, and a nice rustic feel. The service was fair. I will say we all left with full a belly . If your in to this great and I wish them all the best but until I know they have silverware and real plates I will not be back. read more

This place is quintessential Mississippi. The menu is simple: Steaks, chops, and sides. You can get water, tea or beer. You can bring in your own wine or hard alcohol. Seating is picnic style, with long tables running the length of the shop. Best steaks in Mississippi. Period. The end. Any other superlatives would only tarnish just how good a steak this place puts out. My wife got the lamb chops. I don't even like lamb, and I was about to steal them off her plate, that's how good they were. Wait times can be between half an hour to a full hour, depending on when you get there. It's worth it. They've got live entertainment singing and playing. The staff runs their tails off. The sides are excellent. The desserts are pretty good too, but if you have room for dessert, well, that's your own fault. I don't care where you are from. Drive down here and get a steak. You won't be disappointed. read more

The food an atmosphere were fantastic. The live music was also very enjoyable. The desserts were also delicious.

The food is fantastic. The spinach dip was a huge success as an appetizer. The steaks and redfish were delicious. The steaks come out blackened, crisp and unbelievably good. We had the $35 lamb chop appetizer - very tasty but too expensive. The desserts are excellent - the bread pudding was good but the pound cake with the ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries was fantastic. Very attentive service. Total bill for 3 was $150 (not including tip). They don't take credit cards, only cash. At 6:30 pm, the line waiting to get in was much longer. Get there early. My wife and I were with a large group and my wife and I split the ribeye while the steak had a great flavor it was a bit tough. The string beans were barely edible. We both had tea to drink and bread pudding for dessert. The bread pudding was not good. I had extremely high hopes. I have been told for the last 5 or so years of how amazing their food is and how I have HAD to try it. Steak is good. That isn't the disappointment. The disappointment was when I called a week in advance to get preferred seating. We arrived at 6:30 and told them that our party of 7 was there and we didn't get sat down until almost 9:00 pm. I requested at 7:30. I understand that we weren't going to sit at 7:30 and it may take longer. I UNDERSTAND. What I don't understand why it took 3 times for us to go up to the counter to ask why it was taking so long for at least 3 other large parties were sat down who arrived much later than us. Our name was the only name on the list not marked off Every single name above and blow was seated. A party arrived that was a party of 6 was seated less than 10 minutes after arriving from an Uber. This is the disappointment. Please make sure they know you arrived and to be vigilant about it. It is now 10:30 and we just left. We have been here for 4 hours. Please tell me how that is okay? read more

A true hidden MS gem! Located smack in the middle of the cutest little town, this place was everything we'd heard plus more. Bad business..... me and my husband came from Chicago to celebrate a birthday dinner our bill was a $547 we paid the bill in cash only for her to come back 10 minutes late and said we gave her a bad $100 bill. So here's the deal. We arrived with 4 people on Sat. Night at 6:30. We were seated 2 hours later at 8:30. Served at 9:00. Why? They seat all large groups--6 or more first. No matter what. They actually keep two lists. Even if seats are available, too bad for you. So not until everyone else leaves do the "small groups" get seated. Plus the food was unremarkable. Thin overcooked steaks. Wilted salad. read more

Got there at 530, didn't get seated for nearly an hour, waited nearly 20 minutes before flagging down a waitress to get sodas. Asked if they had fountain drinks she said yes and proceeds to bring bottles. They have a very limited menu yet it still was 7:45 before we got our meal. Waitresses were few and far between. The steak was okay nothing to knock your socks off. Just okay. Bread pudding was rum soaked egg custard. No bread to be found. Would not return. They give off an old time vibe but has 2021 customer service. Cash only is weird especially for out of town guest and no banks nearby. read more
