Ate there recently and my steak salad was undercooked - bloody on my salad. Gross. I did say medium rare but blood - ew. Anywho - I remember long ago this was a great place to eat. Now it's a great place to get a plate lunch. The menu does not fit the atmosphere. I remember when there was duck on the menu. It could use some sprucing up. The staff tho r incredible as is the environment. The food tho... Also, I was wanting something light like a potato soup to eat but couldn't find anything like that. First time here. Very nice place. Higher priced but worth it. We had fried crab claws as an appetizer. No pic. Ate it before I temFilet was phenomenal. Pecan pie for dessert. Highly recommend the food. Server was very helpful. Gave us just enough attention to not make us feel like she was hovering. Okay I like Char, we eat there very regularly. But sometimes they do some ridiculous stuff! Like about weeks ago on a Saturday you had to have a reservation. Now Char is not a reservation only restaurant. So make up your mind either be reservation only restaurant or seat who comes thur your door. Today they have suspended to go orders! You can't even come into the restaurant and place an order to go. I understand staffing is an issue but really! It hard to support a Char with this ridiculousness!! read more

I had seen this restaurant a few times whenever I was driving through Jackson. The exterior made it seem like a generic Southern pseudofancy locale, so I never really considered visiting. But my sister was really wanting to go for her birthday, and as a result, my family and I decided to give it a shot. It definitely turned out to be far different than what I expected and has ultimately shot up to becoming one of my favorite restaurants in the whole state. The dining area was filled with a variety of seating that was chock-full of patrons, although we were given a nice, cozy booth. We ordered a couple appetizers which were delicious, both of them being crab-based. I had a steak and a baked potato, and while the meat was quite good, the spud was a little too cheesy for me. We also ordered two cake desserts which blew me away and became the most memorable part of the restaurant for me. Unfortunately, the only downside was the service. The waiting staff was pretty slow and forgot what drinks we ordered when we did, but they were very friendly and accommodating to whatever we asked for. Overall, I really enjoyed Char, and wish I had checked it out earlier. All I can really say now is the saying never judge a book by its cover really holds here. read more

Came into town for one night and found this place!!!! Best decision ever! To start Daniel, our waiter was phenomenal!!! His attention to detail was great. We never once had to even ask for water or bread. We ordered fried crab claws for an appetizer and they were delicious! The lamb-chops were greatly seasoned and delicious. This was an absolute disappointment. We were so excited to dine here as it's considered one of the finer restaurants in town. But the service we received initially was to the point of insulting. We decided to sit in the bar as it's a weekend evening and after sitting there for 15-minutes, the two women servers servicing the area did not acknowledge us or make any eye contact. One came to take an order at a round top next to us and still ignored us. The three of us looked around, waited patiently, and even waved at them. Not even a gesture to let us know they see us and will attend to us soon. We went to the hostess and asked to be reseated in the main dining and informed the new server what had happened. A manager showed up and apologized, which is part of the reason why this rating isn't a 1 star. I don't think I've ever experienced such horrible lack of service. And it's even more surprising coming from a business that positions itself as a fine dining establishment. Putting that aside, they have an expansive menu and of the dishes we ordered, the crab cakes we ordered were tasty and filled with lump crab instead of a lot of fillers. Had it not been for the horrible service, my rating would have been a 3 based on the comparison of my dining experiences at similar fine dining restaurants in town. read more

My entire extended family and I have been eating here for at least the last decade of my life. Consistently good food, consistently good service, beautiful ambience, wonderful piano bar, patio and dining area... zero complaints. I think the pricing is very fair for fine dining too- especially for the amount of food you get. We continued to order out from here during COVID, but I heard they took this option away recently which we were saddened to hear so hopefully it comes back soon. We've ordered extensively off the brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert menu- I could list some faves but then this review would be a novel lol. We've also ordered catering from here numerous times for family gatherings and holidays, and it's fast, easy and reliable. To share a quick anecdote about how stellar this place really is, once a long time ago I was served blackfish that was raw in the middle. I just ate my sides instead and when the sweet and attentive waitress came to check how our food was, I calmly informed her. She was far more alarmed than I was even! I just asked her if the kitchen could make me another piece of fish- instead she brought me out a whole new entree and comped our entire meal because she recognized us as a regulars. We were so stunned and grateful. I've never forgotten that level of service- bar none the best I've ever had anywhere. We will continue to be lifelong customers. read more

Instead it was served in a short glass. Spouse ordered a Scotch, neat. (The barman served a measured shot.) We each ordered the half Wedge Salad, which was served with just the right amount of bacon and blue cheese. (Kudos to the lettuce supplier - the Wedge was crisp.) I ordered the Ribeye; my spouse ordered the Filet. The Filet was tender and very flavorful. The Ribeye, while well marbled and tender had no flavor. Not at all worth $45! The sides were loaded baked potato (stingy on the "loaded" part) and creamed spinach with cheese (nothing exceptional.) The food was great and the atmosphere was even better they had a guy playing piano the whole time while we were there and a couple of the customers came up and sang along with the guy playing. My boyfriend and I came to eat for our anniversary. We had a reservation for 6:30 and got there ten minutes early and only waited 5-10 minutes to be taken to our table. I bookmarked it and had to give it a try! Char was a good time, although nothing really blew me away (aside from my salad... More on that later). Kevin, our server, was very attentive, helpful, and basically chose my meal for me! He suggested the Char salad topped in friend onion straws and I added salmon--THE BOMB DIGGITY! Hubs had the baked chicken breast and my mother-in-law had the duckling entree. No food complaints whatsoever, and all meats were cooked to perfection. Only thing to note was that the table bread was kinda rubbery (like undercooked) so we didn't eat it. But, we didn't need it either! As for the atmosphere and ambiance, Char is a bustling spot and seems very popular on Friday nights as it was quite loud. The food was fine but the service was horrendous. Probably the worst I have ever experienced. We had to flag our waiter to order. He disappeared practically all evening. The manager noticed we were waiting for the bill and our waiter was. no where to be found. He came over got us the check no apologies, nothing. He obviously did not want to engage with us which made our experience even worse. Shame on him. As we were leaving our waiter magically appeared and said to us I hope you enjoyed your evening. His filet mignon and mashed potatoes was also very good. The blueberry bread pudding was good, but for someone who makes fresh blueberry sauce for cakes, this was not a homemade sauce, was a bit dry, but not bad. Negative. Chili fried oysters..very little oyster for so much breading and no chili flavor at all. Veal Oscar with lump crabmeat. Veal was awful--very tough. took 3 bites of each piece thinking one piece would be better, but they were not. Lump crabmeat..more like pieces of crabmeat, sauce was ok, left more than half the meal. Awful experience, just awful at Char's Jackson location. We had a reservation for 7pm for dinner January 2,2023 to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary. The hostess walked us all the way back and placed us in the back corner in front of the BAR passing many open booths and tables. (Not a pleasant location for an anniversary dinner.) We told her that we were not happy with the table and it's location and wanted one of the booths that we just passed in the main dining room. She said that no servers were available for those booths; however, noticed that moments after that she sat a couple (that did not have a reservations) in those booths. What? Does a reservation not count for priority sitting? And what was her story of no waiters? To make matters worse, this back table was surrounded by people standing around us. They apparently were actors for a "show"being played in the very back room. Also, we were told that our waiter (Kevin) would be right with us. After waiting 15 minutes, no waiter. But actors still standing around. We got up and left. When passing by the hostess, we tore up the reservation card and explained. No member of your staff seemed concerned, no apologies, no offers to move us to a different table or booth. Very unprofessional. We most probably will not return to this Char which is disappointing because it has been a favorite restaurant especially for special occasions. We did notify the restaurant management separately.
