You know what, contrary to my initial thoughts on what my experience might be at a Cattle Baron's, I actually like this place a lot. It's great for a lunch since they have an all-you-can-eat soup and salad buffet and the food meets my expectations. I don't know why Cattle Baron's was never on my radar, but it is now. It really has the look of a large-scale chain, but I assure you it's local. The dining areas have smart breaks that leave you with an intimate feel even though you're surrounded by people. The design is good 'ol Texas from the use of wood, right down to the hospitality. I was extremely impressed by the salad bar with every topping I could possibly want (cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, cubes of cheddar cheese, bacon, Parmesan, sunflower seeds, broccoli, and more) and a good variety of dressings (although I didn't see anything oil based like a balsamic vingerrette). The soup options were limited to menudo made with shredded beef and a french onion soup. I opted for a salad with French dressing and the mostly posole menudo. The salad was great and I thought the menudo was flavorful. As we were waiting for our meals we were brought the complimentary bread and garlic butter. The bread is a small French bread, nice and flacky and softer on the inside. I loved the garlic butter and was tempted to ask for some to go. CB was packed to the brim for lunch on a Monday, but our food arrived in a very reasonable time. My catfish covered in corn meal was good. I did feel it lacked a tad in seasoning, salt mostly, but dipping it in the sauce basically rectified any flavor issues I had. I stole a bite (or three) of Charles' steak and while I did find it juicy, again it was lacking in the salt department. Originally when the steak arrived he was asked to cut into the steak to make sure it was cooked to his liking. All was well. But as he progressed into the steak we both noticed the steak was getting more and more done, well passed medium-well until it was well-done. He did bring this up to a manager at the end of our trip who was more than happy to have a new steak made (which we opted not to do because overall the steak was fine) so major points for having fantastic managerial staff. I'm definitely a fan of Cattle Baron's and I could see myself eating lunch here pretty often. I'm pretty excited to check out the other locations too, to see if the do anything different. read more

We wanted to try something other than Texas Roadhouse so we chose Cattle Barron. What a mistake that was. My wife got the French Dip and Salad Bar and the sandwich was dry and tasteless. I ordered a Sirloin cooked medium and it came to the table rare. I sent it back and the replacement was so full of pepper and gristle that I couldn't eat half of it. There were four of us and by the time my food was brought out everyone had already finished or should I say given up on their meal. No apology from the manager who brought my steak out just the "cut into it and see if it's cooked right." Shouldn't your cooks be able to cook steaks to order and have them right before leaving the kitchen? Honestly, we will continue to go to Texas Roadhouse. We could have gotten a better meal at Sizzler and at a better priced than the overpriced meals we received from Cattle Barron. In my opinion, don't waste your time and go somewhere else. read more

Last night we had a family dinner here for six. Four of us had the trout special and it was really good. We also tried the appetizer plate and the green chile cheese chicken wontons were a hit. The best part was our server, Deja. She was so friendly and attentive. A manager (?) also stopped by to check on us. She was a former teacher and super kind to my son. BEST salad bar EVER!! I loved it so so much. I went there for the first time today. I've heard good things about their salad bar so I wanted to give it a try. I'm so happy I did. It was the biggest salad bar I've seen with many many different kind of salads, beans, soup, and deserts. Before coming in, I was so hungry and wasn't sure if some salads gonna fill me up but I came out sooo full. It's not the kinda salad bar you'd imagine. This place was surprisingly on point! Easy to get to, right off airway nestled in between the airport and Montana. Service was friendly and fast. Food was well prepared, menu selection was pretty large, and pricing was fair. Establishment was clean and large. The salad bar was actually impressive. Now understand, I don't like salads really. So what I'm saying is, they have MORE than just salad at said bar. And with most entrees, it comes with the meal. That's a no brainer there. I enjoyed it. Best steak house in town? Nope. Dear Cattle Baron, why do you hate old people? This doesn't seem like good business to me. You are part of this community and should be working to make it better. It makes good business sense to offer ALL of your customers something that caters to their specific needs. So, what's your beef with old folks? My mother's retirement group celebrates the birthdays of their members by going to lunch at your establishment. About 20 individuals regularly showed up for these occasions and they spent plenty of money on the food they ordered and the service they got. Why? Because they liked your restaurant and needed a place that offered them security and a little class. Boy, were they wrong. Instead of good food, they were told there is no menu for those 65 and over. Instead of security, they were given pretention, and... the service was...as ever (and I'm pretty sure through no effort on your part) very good. I certainly hope that you are giving the surcharge you charge for groups to your wait staff as they are the only redeeming things in your rather overrated restaurant. My mother's group has been going to this restaurant for at least 10 years now. They have established themselves as regulars and have never made any special demands and are not confrontational in the least. This is why I'm stepping in the write this review. Your salad bar was once truly tremendous. It is now...okay. Your food quality was once extraordinarily high. It is now...hit or miss. Your portions were once generous. They are now a joke. Your prices were once high. They are now laughably exorbitant. You refuse to let anyone (and yes, this includes folks have have dietary restrictions) to order from the children's menu if they are over 12. And you offer NOTHING for seniors. They don't matter to you, right? You are not acting as part of the community, you are simply out to bleed your customers dry. And, what's worse, you are losing customers for it and don't seem to care. This restaurant does not get a recommendation from me, my family, or my friends. In, fact, I'll be making sure my mother's retirement group moves their festivities to a restaurant that cares about their dining experience and doesn't seek to take every last cent they have to enjoy a meal. I have dinner here every time I visit El Paso, and I have the same meal every time. This salad bar is fab, and the soup never disappoints, which was tortilla his visit. Spicy broth with chicken and chiles...of course it demands to be topped with some cheddar-jack and tortilla strips....I went back for seconds! To wrap it all up I always have the mud pie. Coffee ice cream on a Oreo crust, topped with whipped cream, hot fudge, and roasted almonds....pick your tongue up off your phone! I always leave stuffed, but the salad burns down quick. Wow! Just wow! The food was amazing from beginning to end! The salad bar is AMAZING!!! The filet mignon is so tender. The catfish, some of the best I ever had! The sweet potatoes were so good! This is my favorite steakhouse in El Paso. Salad bar has lots of choices with soup and jello and fruit for dessert. The bread for the table is the best, so fluffy and buttery. I ordered the fillet mignon medium rare with sweet potato fries. The first bite of the steak was super tender and delicious. My friends who ordered the same thing was perfectly cooked. Mine was a little under cooked because I had parts that were super raw (minus 1 star), but other than that this place is my favorite. I compared the same fillet mignon steak at another restaurant and this place was definitely better. I will come back every time I stay at the hotel across the street. read more

If you're a fan of salad bars, this is the place. A group of us went in for dinner tonight. My first visit as I live out of town. It was fantastic mostly because of the salad bar. Fresh toppings and great dressings plus macaroni, potato and pea salads. All delicious. I also had the steak and rice soup. So good. By far one of the best bang for your buck salad to go orders in El Paso. $10 Will buy you a 3 pound salad and a side salad of Italian pasta or macaroni salad or sweet potato casserole or five other options. I'm in El Paso for work...one of my coworkers picked this place. Good choice! The salad bar goes on for days. To be honest, I think we all would have been satisfied with just that. But, that's only because we wouldn't have know what we were missing. The prime rib is excellent and 8 oz is more than enough. Two of my coworkers and I ordered that. Another ordered the orange glazed salmon and loved it. Another ordered a steak, I don't remember which one though, and was more than satisfied. It was a 10 oz cut and he barely finished it. The veggie medley was cooked just right and the rice is almost like a pilaf, it has vegetables in it. The baked potato is big enough for two people. Oh...the bread is really good, too. It better to order unsweetened and then fix it yourself, trust me on that. The salad bar they are so proud of I found to be very -meh. One thing I found interesting is the E-Verify posting in the front main lobby. I can understand if you disclose that to people when they are applying for employment or if you have it displayed in a break room for employees. Came here in the evening around 3:30pm. I was waiting for a doctors office to complete a bunch of physicals and I didn't have my rental car so I just walked down here and I am glad I did. The food was fresh... even in the salad bar, and I had ordered a small steak with a loaded baked potato and asparagus! The food itself made the trip worth it but mainly the bartender "Nacho" pronounced Nassio was what made the visit stand out. Super nice, tells you whats good n the menu, immediately asks if you want a drink or if yours is low will ask to refill. Told me some great places around El Paso to visit because I'm not from the area. Also told me some hacks on the menu so I can get the salad bar included at no additional cost. I was skeptical about it at first because you know...COVID. Have no fear, they require & provide gloves while you're fixing your plate at the bar! We've been dining here every now and then and I am a fan. The food was always fresh and that salad bar is really worth the $10 or so they charge. It seems that over time, they reduced the size of the menu, but, did I mention the salad and soup bar? Last night my husband took me out on a date here. I had the Rio Pollo and he had the Filet Mignon. I, of course, had the salad bar too. Can you tell I like it yet? The chicken was good, and the Mr. enjoyed his steak. We went to eat dinner on 12/26. Charly was our server and she told us that she is recommending a special steak (16 oz prime angus beef that comes with a free salad bar). We said we'd take that and a spaghetti for our daughter from the kid's menu. Charly came back and told us that she couldn't give us the free salad bar, so we told her that it's fine, that we will take a salad bar anyway and she can charge us for it. She was friendly, and gave us all the food as we wanted but before we got the bill, she came with a unprofessional sob story and it was just astonishing and we were very upset over her treatment of us. She added a soup with salad bar bill when we didn't ask for it, she did add the salad bar we wanted, but we are not sure why she added an extra $9.95 on our bill, and while 10 bucks isn't a big deal, it is a big deal that she was not transparent and she was dishonest. She said that she "HAD" to add it because her boss and her boss's boss were walking around, and that she was going to get FIRED if she didn't add the salad bar. Really? The only other servers in our section we saw were JP and Marty. We are extremely disappointed by this, and did not expect such dishonesty from this establishment. We implore the management to speak to their employees about not recommending things they cannot give and be transparent about how they bill customers. Our bill was over $70 but that isn't a problem, our biggest problem was her professionalism and her lack of transparent communication. We went to Cattle Baron to enjoy a nice dinner, not worry about cost, but she left a very bitter after taste for us due to her theatrics. I thought this place was delicious and the service fantastic. Came here two times in one day. The first was during happy hour, where my workmates and I shared the appetizer sampler. The green chile wontons were my favorite. We sat in the lounge area, and the server was friendly and checked in on us as needed. I came back by myself for dinner and sat in a booth in the dining area, where I had a different server who was just as friendly and accommodating. For dinner, I had the prime rib which...holy cow (no pun intended), it was good. And the au jus that came with it? Divine. The complimentary fresh-baked bread was tasty, too, and my meal included access to the salad bar. Try the green chile corn chowder. It's got a kick, but it's delicious. For dessert, I ordered a cappuccino brownie, and...everything really is bigger in Texas. That thing was bigger than my hand! I appreciated getting such a generous portion for such a reasonable price. So on a whim (might as well say "self inflicted dare"), my wife and I decided to try this restaurant at another location (the one on Joe Battle) in the same city...just to see if the dining experience would be different from last time. I'll keep this short...as the experience pretty much confirmed that Cattle Baron cannot cook steak to save their own reputation. This time around, I decided to play it safe and order the lobster tail; because I knew that even though it would most likely be served bland with bland, unsalted butter, I could easily rectify that with a touch of salt on both. The tail itself was cooked nice and tender, so I have little complaints about that. My wife, however, decided to play the lotto by ordering a filet mignon; and lost big time. She practically had to drown the steak in A1 sauce and yet it still tasted like tangy rubber. The fact that I could visually SEE there was no seasoning on the steak was already a bad sign. I suspect the chef spends more time worrying about how good the grill marks look on the steak rather than bothering to season it. Needless to say, she left half the steak on her plate and proceeded to eat the rest of her shrimp scampi...which was actually quite decent, btw. One addition we made was to order the crab cake appetizer. Now, when I think of crab cakes, I picture them having tons of crab meat in them. However, these crab cakes were about...50% bread crumbs. WAY too much bread to even be considered a crab cake. As for the mixture overall, it was bland (of course)...not to mention the fact that they don't even serve it with any remoulade sauce. What a disappointment! Overall, this confirmed that the recipes for Cattle Baron are locked in. In other words, it's literally in their practice of craft to serve bland, unseasoned steaks with barely seasoned seafood that you more or less have to season yourself. It doesn't matter which location you go to; they both produce the same mediocre product. This will be our last time going. I didn't really see anything else on the menu I'd be curious enough to try. Not that it would matter, since this establishment is evidently afraid of seasoning. I guess they assume that A1 sauce is the way to go. read more

I've been to Cattle Baron a few times since 2007 and I've been happy with it every time. Service has been fantastic each time I've been. I never had to wait for a refill on my drink, and they bring complimentary bread with a great garlic butter that really compliments the bread. I usually get the salad bar which is well stocked and full of choices. They have enough of everything to make a salad you'll enjoy. Lettuce, spinach, corn salad, spiced tomatoes and cumbers as well as the usual vegetables are all there. There also have fresh pasta salad as well. They always have two flavorful soups that add to the already plentiful choices. For dessert, you can enjoy fresh fruit, banana pudding, or mousse that's right next to all the great choices on the salad bar. I've also ordered their catfish at lunch at it was very tasty. Fried and breaded in cornmeal, it reminded me of the catfish I used to eat in the South. That was a pleasant surprise as well. I think the salad bar is a steal at $7.95 and I haven't ever had a problem with food quality or anything like that. If you want a nice family restaurant where you can enjoy steak, salad or seafood, this is a good place to go. read more

I've eaten here about 10 times and it's a pretty good steakhouse. The main reason for 3 stars is the prices. It's not a fancy restaurant and although the steaks are good they're not great. The first time I had the chicken fried steak it was awesome. So I ordered it the next time and it wasn't as good. I've had it 2 more times and it's good but not great. $21+ for an 8oz prime rib and 8 French fries is a lot. If it wasn't for the ample salad bar it would be a bad deal. Stopped by for lunch today and had the salad bar. I don't typically enjoy buffet style places because most of the produce is already going bad. That was not the case here.
