It's not what is was, but what is? You might expect to be served a classic shrimp cocktail at a steak house with a few jumbo shrimp cascading over the rim of a parfait glass. No. Four tiny, amost microsccopic shrimp, were fanned out on a dessert plate with a stainless steel ramiken of cocktail sauce as accompaniment. Not impressive to say the least. The twice baked baked potato was nothing more than bland mashed potatoes piped back into the skin. The butterscotch pie was meh and the key lime pie barely tasted of lime. Okay, so if i had to be honest there were some MAJOR concerns when pulling up to this restaurant on a Saturday Thanksgiving weekend! The lot was COMPLETELY EMPTY! Also from first glance of the reviews I was really getting concerned but this is where my FIL wanted to take us as a family. Fast forward, we walk in, there's one table seated in this ginormous restaurant. We were seated in the banquet area. We were then greeted by Ryan and Raul. These guys were amazing! There was 9 of us and they never missed a beat in helping us. They made sure beverages were fill, took our orders, received our food in a timely manner. Everything was great! The food was REALLY DELICIOUS AS WELL! Our meals ranged from the night special of Sea Bass, NY strip, filet mignon, prime rib and rib eye. Everything was cooked to perfection! I think it is completely FALSE advertising to call this place "fine dining". Although the wait staff are very accommodating and polite, the omniance was not there. My first red flag should have been when I called and there wasn't a dress code. Then when we showed up and the outside of the place was very run down. Then when we got there and they had both mozzarella sticks AND escargot as appetizers, we knew we were not going to be having the fine dining experience we intended. The daytime menu here is different from the dinner menu and is served in the backside of the restaurant in what looks like a lounge - note that once the dinner portion of the restaurant is open the lounge side closes and the lounge menu is no longer available. The food here for lunch was decent, but if it is any indication of what the expensive dinner menu is to be like then I don't know if I'd be able to justify the exponential cost increase. I had an iced tea - delicious, fried shrimp po'boy, and the chocolate mousse dessert. My colleagues had the blt sandwich with fries, soup, key lime pie, mango raspberry cheesecake, and fruit torte. My favorite dish was the mousse by far, but that was not made in house. The fruit torte was good but a little dry. The mango raspberry cheesecake was pretty standard, though the drizzle was good - I tasted cherry flavor but my colleague said it was berry. The only two items on the dessert menu that were made in house were the two fruit pies, one of which they were out of when we were there. We recently celebrated at Billy Crews and for the most part we were pleasantly pleased with everything. It is a relaxing drive with great views. Our entire party decided to get the ribeye plate, which ended up into a lovely dinner meal deal. This included shrimp cocktail, soup or salad and your main entree with one side. Everything came out hot and cooked as ordered, orchestrated one after the other. The meat was mouthwatering and very tender. The size of the steak was enough to fill you up not wanting more. The only thing I was disheartened by was the old outdated facilities emphasized by the restrooms. I finish a lovely fancy meal and then immediately transported back to 1960 when entering the lavatory. This establishment has great outdoor views, but the decor and small upgrades would make a huge difference in the end. read more

For what it is, it's actually okay. I kind of built Billy Crews up to this nice steakhouse in my head (and it may very well be, that's still to be determined) so I was a little let down when a bent paper taped to the Billy Crews front door informed me that lunch is now served in the lounge. The lounge isn't all that appealing to me for what I was hoping for, but it did make me feel like this would be the kind of bar that Lone Star Golf Club would have if they had one. Forest green beams separating the mirrors on the ceiling, a small stage for live music, and large windows looking out to a pretty lush patio. It has a slight "traditional expensive" feel. You could also categorize it as a sports bar since they did have an ample amount of televisions, but all of them were tuned to the same horse race so it's kind of luck of the draw. Although lunch is served in the lounge, they didn't have any waitresses, just the loan bartender. She was great, but service suffered. They could probably use at least one waitress during lunch... their dilemma is that it doesn't appear to get packed during lunch, there were maybe three other tables occupied and a few seats at the bar taken. We started with the chips and salsa. This was actually the highlight of my meal. Both appear to be made in house and the chips were salty heaven. The salsa was really spicy, but super addicting. I'm assuming they use the same chefs for lunch and dinner so what I was able to establish is the following: Steaks, yes. Mexican, yes. Anything else, no. Charles got the sliced ribeye sandwich and for once I didn't take a bite, but it did look absolutely magnificent and he raved about it afterwards. I ordered the shrimp po' boy with a side of coleslaw and while these weren't awful, I don't see myself ordering them again anytime soon. The coleslaw was just cabbage and carrots. You're probably thinking... isn't that all coleslaw is? No, it was missing the mayonnaise based sauce that marries these two ingredients together. I really like cabbage and so I still ate at least half of it sans sauce, but I ordered coleslaw, not cabbage so that was pretty disappointing. The shrimp po' boy was an okay sandwich overall. The bread was toasted, but not too hard. There was a nice Cajun mayo mix on the bottom. Lettuce, tomatoes, and onions were all in attendance. The breading on the shrimp was pretty good. But the breading was also overpowering because they used tiny (not small... tiny) shrimp so each bite tended to have more breading than shrimp. I would order this sandwich again if they used larger shrimp. The sandwich had at least ten battered pieces on it if not more, but I'd be more than happy with four if they were three times the size. Just a note: thinking about the coleslaw and the sandwich... the "coleslaw" would've served a better purpose had I put it on the sandwich. I still want to check out the actual restaurant at Bill Crews and I'm not opposed to the lounge. Next time we go to the lounge, I'll stick to the Mexican food and anything steak related. I'm not sure how the prices differ inside the restaurant, but the lounge had really great prices. My meal was right under $10 and I think Charles' was too. The best piece of advice I can give is adjust your expectations between the lounge and the restaurant. read more

We got a gift card for here so we gave it a try. The steak was awesome. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was very small, but good. They brought out a carrot soup that was weird, definitely not our kind of thing. The bread was good. The service was good, our waiter was very nice. They did stick us in the corner of a pretty empty restaurant, a little odd but we didn't mind too much. The place is fancy and very expensive. Wish it had a little more lighting. I sit here wondering what "bernie" the manager and "Billy" (not the original Billy")!actually does... I've never Been asked how my food was or how the service was. Bernie doesn't seem to actually work for a living. It's pathetic! The food is good when and if you happen to have a good cook and a good bartender to take care of you, which is rare... today we were left with out a cook. To start, I'll make clear this review is for the lounge area not the fine dining area. That being said, I can only describe my experience as mediocre, average and disappointing. Anyone who follows my reviews knows I truly enjoy wings and calamari. If it's on the menu I'm ordering it. I know a quality product when I eat it. This was not it. Myself and my lady friend decided to stop in, have a couple cocktails and order a few appetizers ( shareable). We went with the calamari, sausage plate, wings and escargot. Escargot was actually pretty good. Good garlic butter, tender and not chewy with a couple garlic toast sticks to dip. All in all enjoyable. Anyone who enjoys good calamari knows the difference between a wonderfully house made and breaded squid and a frozen food service product. This was definitely the latter. Surprising considering the fancy side should really have all house made product. The calamari came with a small cup of bland tasteless marinara. Again. You would expect better. Sausage plate. Hmm. Heat up a $2 dollar sausage link you get at your local market, cut it up and put some mustard on the side. Boom! You just saved $6. Wings? Oh boy. Where do I start? First off, no flavor choice. No sauce choice. Just wings. That's it. Now these wings are also food service wings. Tasted like they might have been frozen, thawed, frozen and thawed again. A bit mushy. They seem to be breaded, but instead of deep frying the grill them?!? Huh? No heat, no flavor and an off putting texture. Skip these. Prob won't give this place another try. Not much hope. When we arrived we checked in with the hostess and we were on their reservation list. We waited for the rest of our party and once there we checked in. We were quite surprised when the other hostess told us we were not on the list and too bad. No nothing, not even a complementary glass of wine or anything. I enjoy going to Billy crews. We have gone for over 25 years. I had my wedding reception here and my daughter was married on the patio and had her dinner reception here as well. The owner and general manager worked with us on both events and were very accommodating. I am planing my upcoming 50th birthday celebration and I know Billy Crews is where I will have it. Billy Crews has a dining room, lounge and a package store. In the dinning room you are served everything in courses. In the lounge is a more relaxed environment and the special we get is the steak platter, that includes a sirloin steak, twice baked potato and a salad all on one plate. You can upgrade to a ribeye steak (which is my favorite) for a buck or two. The drinks are never weak, and they have live music Wednesday - Saturday. The package store has an extensive wine, beer and liquor selection. I recommend Billy Crews to all my friends and family, they have been in business for a very long time and they are not a chain restaurant. I would definitely try it out! Let me start off here and say I might of been here on an off night. My service was so so and my steak was like eating shoe leather. I ordered a medium rare steak like everyone else at my table but their first attempt came out done and cut like shoe leather and on the second attempt the steak still cut like shoe leather but was rare as hell. It was like they had a pair of tongs and just barely let it sit for one second on both sides of the steak to get the grill marks and that was it. There was zero flavor or seasoning on the steak which basically just made the meat inedible. I will say the my waiter saw in both instances that the steak just was not good at all and suggest that he try for the third time but by that time my friends at the table were done eating and waiting on the desert menus. I will say that there was an event that night going on on the main dining area but still if you are going back for a second steak it should be on the priority list on coming out. Not twenty minutes later. As for the Desserts, we ordered a slice of Keylime pie and the chocolate tort. The chocolate tort came out pretty damn good actually. But the Keylime pie was a little off by any standards. The crust seem like it might've had like Rob a consonant that should've been toasted before it was made into a crossed. The crust was really soggy and just blah. The filling was OK but seem to be off as well. Now let me add that the wine menu is pretty off the chart. I don't know how many of the wines they really do have if they really do have in their wine menu but it was impressive if they really do have everything they say they have in the menu. We had the Ehlers 2010 Merlot which just sung to everyone at the table. Surprised all the cab drinkers at the table with that one as everyone loved it. Their wine prices by the bottle are spectacular. Maybe one day I will make it there again and try another steak. read more

I haven't had the food but I've been to their lounge and outside patio. Wait, I take that back...I had a burger and their popcorn one time and it was nothing to really write about. I'm not interested in trying their other foods or coming back. Like me, the lady I brought here during work was bored out of her mind. It was a Monday night so maybe that's why (but I seriously doubt it). The only time Billy Crews was bearable was when they had live music on a Thursday night. It wasn't even that great sounding but it was ok. They usually have country music. At least the night wasn't dragging on as much. Some patrons get up and dance. They have free popcorn in the lounge. Beware, it's sometimes burned or you can crack a tooth if you bite into a kernel. It's also dark in there. You can also go out to their patio. It's dark too. I would be scared to trip especially if I was drinking. One time I went in the summer when the hot sun was out and it was gross. There was tons of flies swarming around. I couldn't stand it any longer and left. FYI, at least the women's restroom is clean. It has a sofa in there. I wouldn't mind sitting on it while using my phone instead of being out there. The owner has been there a few times when we've gone. He never comes up to us to say hello. He will just say goodnight to us. He goes and talks to other patrons but not us. He also sits down and drinks wine. I mean really, what kind of hospitality is that? He was also bragging that his steak comes from Marfa, Texas to another patron. Ok then... The waiters/waitresses we've had have been pretty good. This is why I'm giving Billy Crews 2 stars instead of 1. Like I said before, their women's restroom is clean so another reason why it's two stars. Maybe the rest of their food is good? They have steaks and I'm not sure what else. Big deal, I can make one at home or go to another steakhouse. Steakhouse restaurants are plentiful in Texas. I don't think this place serves anything special or instead maybe I should say...This place is nothing special. They are famous for their wine selection. There are other places in town that have aged and foreign wines. I'd skip Billy Crews altogether, especially if you're a tourist in El Paso or New Mexico. You might be misled on what good quality in this area is. Try State Line or Great American Land and Cattle instead. Mmm State Line's bread! I would say those two places are a bit closer to Austin quality barbecue and steaks. The service over there is better too most times. The way the owner acts is what sets me off the most. He's acted like this on more than one occasion. I definitely have a bad taste in my mouth from this so called iconic establishment. Iconic for what exactly? I don't get it and I don't care. Supposedly I had heard Billy Crews was one of the best restaurants El Paso had to offer. If that's so, then I must say El Paso doesn't offer much. We came in two hours before their closing time and there were only two other tables seated (one of which was already finishing up). We chose our seats and then five minutes later we were told to move because they were getting ready to close and they wanted to keep the customers in one area (ok.... I suppose..). We were attended by another server who was very respectful and nice and he took our drink order and the appetizer. For the appetizer we order escargot which only took about fifteen minutes to arrive and was very delicious. Perfectly seasoned and bathed in a fatty sauce it set up the stage for what I thought would be a spectacular dinner. I was wrong. My party ordered two steaks and I ordered the lamb chops. I was then informed that there were no lamb chops. Feeling extremely saddened by this, considering lamb is one of my favorite dishes, I asked the waiter to recommend the restaurant's best dish. He told me it was their special-cut steaks and so I ordered their "special" filet mignon. All seemed well until thirty minutes passed and the food was no where to be found. The server offered us more drinks and bread and told us the food was coming out soon. Yet another thirty minutes and once again we asked but the food was still not ready. However, that was not the worst part. Once we actually got our food I was immediately turned off by the lackluster presentation. It was a slab of meat, my side of sweet potato, and a piece of watermelon which did not really belong there. Before getting into the meat I'd just like to mention that the sweet potato was just a big piece of boiled potato which was then cut at its ends. No flavor, no seasoning, no marshmallows (as is common in many other restaurants), nothing. Nada. I expected something better but alas that was all I got. No worries, right? The special-cut meat is probably amazing! Nope. I cut into it and it was completely rare even though I ordered it medium well. I was extremely hungry at that point after waiting one hour so I decided to just eat it as it was and took two bites. After that I decided I just couldn't stomach it and asked the server to please have it cooked a bit more until it was medium rare. They took about another fifteen minutes to bring it and it came back charred and well done. Absolutely dry and the seasoning was also quite lacking. I internalized a tear and decided it was just too bad to eat so we asked if we could have it removed. In the end the manager came over and had it removed from the check. He also gave a free dessert (some sort of blueberry cobbler that wasn't very good ) which was nice but didn't make up for the overpriced food and badly cooked steaks (the steaks ordered by my other party members were a bit rare and the other well done and hard). I only go here to hit up the bar so I am not sure how the main restaurant is. The bar is tucked in the back and has it's own entrance. They have live music during the weekend and a few lunch specials during the week. The crowd tends to be older adults (read 40 plus) but the bartenders are great and really know their stuff and are fast. They have a bar menu and I always get the 1/2 lb cheeseburger w/ steak fries. At $7.50 it's hard to beat the price. Usually just drinking beer when I go here but my tab has never been high. A great place to just go and have a few beers and the end of the day and unwind and relax especially if you are looking to just hang out with a few friends. read more
