It's a steak house and a good one according to my dinner mates. There were many compliments on the meat cuts. I opted for the salad bar which had so many choices that I could not try everything that I wanted to try. I filled my plate all sorts of fresh vegetables, cheeses, and veggie side items. It ranks as one of the best salad bars that I have ever had the pleasure of grazing. My baked potato was a little overdone, but no worries due to the fantastic salad. The service was so-so as the waiter seemed to forget about us from time to time. We sat for a long while waiting on our check. The Cattle Baron is an El Paso 4...that's an Austin 1, a Santa Fe 1/2, or a San Francisco 0. Kind of like a North Dakota 10 is a Montana 4 with a six-pack, ok? Everything is relative. The Cattle Baron is located at 1700 Airway, right by the entrance to the El Paso Airport. Parking is crowded, but wait a minute. A survivor will be coming out soon. Inside, you'll be warmly greeted by the nicest folks ever, and I give them and the waitstaff a solid 10. The inside appointments get 5 stars. The atmosphere and clientele are right out of The Golden Corral, which is to say "The All You Can Eat" Folks with very large families, aka numerous toddler terrorists and infants. This is El Paso, where folks dress down instead of up to dine out. Ok? Everything is relative. Now the food....in a few words, OVERPRICED, BLAND, WATERED DOWN, and either BURNT or COLD. Your objective at an establishment that is too expensive with poor food quality is to emerge with most of your wallet intact by ordering inexpensive old reliables that they can't screw up. At The Cattle Baron, that means skipping beverages and steaks and, indeed, most entrees and sticking to water, and skipping that overhyped Salad Bar( a whole lot of nothin'...watery ho-hum dressings and soggy lettuce, the usual pasta sides, etc, etc). instead, order a 10.50 burger with FRIES ( baked potatoes at the Cattle Baron are served with margarine, not butter, and no sour cream), and one of their desserts, which are good. $4.95-$5.50) Make sure they don't burn your dessert. There! You made it outta there for just under $20. You can be sure that others were not nearly so fortunate as you. This is The City. El Paso, Texas. I had their rib and kielbasa special and it was pretty good. A little too much sauce on the kielbasa but the ribs were tender and flavorful. Probably the best thing about this place was the salad bar. It's huge and has a variety of items from spinach to egg and a variety of dressings. I love hitting this place for lunch. The salad bar is alway fresh and they offer two different soups. This last visit I chose to try the hot pastrami sandwich on sour dough bread. I loved it. It is a must try and I was able to get the endless salad bar with my meal for $3-4 more. I also like the fact that it is a place for lunch where you can sit and have a conversation. I went there for dinner on 09/15/16. I ordered the salad bar before dinner. While I was finishing my salad I bite into something very hard. After spitting out the object I noticed that it was a rock the size of a kidney bean. After getting over the initial pain in my jaw I asked for the manager. The manager came and took a report of the incident. She took off a small discount off of my and my wife's bill. I still have pain to that area of my jaw. Family Dinner. We ordered kids burger, chicken fingers both with sweet potato fries, Rio Pollo and I had the salad bar. The establishment is set up for family or business encounters. The salad bar has the traditional items for a salad set up. It also has pasta salads,fruit bar and sweets. The soups of the day were egg drop and green pozole. Out of all the items, the pozole stood out. The burger and chicken fingers traditional no biggy. The Rio chicken was spicy hot and juicy in some areas. I used to frequent this restaurant about 10 years ago, and the quality was great. I was in town in business on a recent Tuesday night, and decided to revisit. I was very disappointed. I ordered the sirloin kabob medium with a baked sweet potato, which I would argue is the best value on the menu. It includes either a Caesar salad or the salad bar. I chose the salad bar, and it is one of the best out there. The servers seem to steer you toward it when you order. The sirloin kabob. Yuck. First of all, I ordered it medium. I'm pretty sure it was still alive on my plate when it arrived. I tried to stomach some of it, but decided to have it sent back for a bit more time on the grill. When it came back 10 minutes later, it was only slightly more done. I could have looked past this if it taste good, but it didn't. The meat was gristly and hard to cut and chew. It had very little flavor, if any. Almost as if it was Grade F meat, which it may have been. The vegetables attached were equally bad, in that they were undercooked and had bad texture. The savior here was the sweet potato, the salad bar, which are the only reasons this is not a "zero star" review. The service was good, but there was a bit of apathy. She knew I was not pleased with it, and acknowledged it. However, no attempt was made to solve the issue after the first time I sent it back. I would probably have had a manager visit my table, or comped a portion. To their defense, the manager did drop the plate at the table the second time and apologized. I did, however, leave the table with 2/3 of my meal still on the plate. I will probably not return here, except for maybe a happy hour special or to have a salad bar meal. read more

Customer service from waiter Eugene sucked!!! He told our entire table how much of a professional he was then forgot my shrimp scampi. Not once did he admit he failed to put it in the system. Once I reminded him about it he said "don't worry about it". Not apologetic at all. One of my coworkers ordered a beer and had to wait 10 mins because it was left at the bar. The first thing I noticed about this place when I came with my family was that a lot of the tables were empty even though it was dinner time on a Saturday. Now I know why. The waiter was friendly, but he messed up my order. I got the catfish pontratrain (it's topped with shrimp and crab) despite ordering the plain blackened catfish. The topping was inedible because of how salty it was. The fish was ok - nothing special. My brother also complained that his tilapia was on the salty side. The best part about this place is the salad bar. Everything is fresh and there's a large selection. Avoid the soups though - they're also salt bombs. read more

2nd week it has been open. My office frequents the one on Airway but this one is much better. Bread was super fresh and soft, Lunch special was great (prime rib sandwich), service was good, and decor is nice and updated. I've never been so underwhelmed by a steak and seafood joint. Went in on a Monday night and was greeted promptly by a very enthusiastic manager ( which is nice) and sat at a table immediately. Our server came to us in a timely fashion and was very polite, the niceness stops there however. My boyfriend wanted to come here for their chili, which he said was really good last time he came here a few months ago. We tried to order it but the server informed us that the chili has never been made at that location. Odd. So we decided on the green chili beef stew and salad bar combo. Wow. What a greasy, bland stew. You could literally see the oil sitting on top and very fatty pieces of brisket ( although tender) didn't have much seasoning or flavor. Came with a wrapped warm tortilla, seriously odd. But never fear, they have a large salad bar! I tried a little bit of everything. Everything was either way to sweet when it shouldn't be sweet or had NO flavor. I had to salt and pepper the EFF out of everything to make it taste like anything. The only good thing was a plain salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, and other veggies with some dressing. Sweet potato casserole? Blah. I can't say anything about their steak or cuts of meat but I am seriously disappointed, will probably never returned to the place. Honestly from what I had and saw, don't waste your time. As we walked in the General Manager trust a trash can in my husbands face demanding he dispose of his monster. There were no signs posted saying, no drinks allowed and the manager made a seen about it. We only stayed because my husband wanted prime rib so badly. After my husband took his drink outside, I told the manager how unacceptable his behavior was and he apologized to me. The server we had was wonder and they have an impressive salad bar. The prime ribs came out wrong and I had a tough end piece so they got me a new one. The prime ribs were tough compared to others I've had but the flavor was good. I had to call the GM to our table and have him apologize to my husband because he avoided us the whole time. The GM apologized but made some BS excuse that he thought my husband wanted to throw it away. We were not offered a discount for all of the trouble, which was a bit surprising. read more

First the good: David, behind the bar, knows his cocktails and beers. The cosmo was perfect. Even David's fantastic bartending and electric personality couldn't make up for the lackluster experience we had. We see from other reviews now that most people go for the salad bar. We should have stuck with that. Now the bad: we ordered the appetizer sampler. My wife took one bite of the shrimp and spit it out, it was raw. We alerted David and he notified the manager. The manager apologized and said he would "remake it". It is obvious he took it in the back and put everything back into the fryer and re-plated the same food. How was it obvious you ask? Well let me explain. The shrimp returned in under 5min and now it appeared burnt. Manager says: "we left it in longer to make sure they were done". The shrimp were now cooked, but still cold. They put the mozz sticks back in (to warm them up likely) as they were now scoping with oil and weeping from the second fryer dip. We ate one cheese stick and simply didn't eat the rest. David informed us the appi was taken care of and we paid for our drinks, tipped David nicely and left. We won't be back. Also, the gnats at the bar are a complete nuisance. read more

My kids and I came here after being unexpectedly stranded at the airport. We were tired and had a ton of luggage.. The hostess was so nice! She showed us where we could put our bags, and sat us in the lounge area. The kids had chicken and the steak off the kids menu. They were both delicious!! Like seriously sooo good. My first time at this location and I loved it compared to the older location. This was also my first time having the salad bar and there was a huge selection and everything was fresh. I will never go to another salad bar or salad buffet place again, CattleBaron did an excellent job and won me over. The price for the salad bar was affordable as well. My partner had the New Mexico steak with green chiles on top, had a sample and it was delicious and perfectly cooked. When I end my diet, I'll be sure to try something off their menu! read more

I'm a little biased towards this restaurant as I used to work here and met my wife here as well. We have gone back from time to time, I know the food and the way it should be prepared. I love the large salad bar, their chicken posole us great. I always enjoyed the ribs and the lobster. Service has always been a crap shoot, but knowing how they prepare things and the recipes keeps us going back. read more
