Great service and great coffee! I was eating next door for brunch and I was craving coffee and the aesthetic at this place looked super cool and appealing so I had to try it. There's a little window to order a small space to sit and drink your coffee if you wanted to but it looks more like a grab and go place. I did not sit indoors so I'm not sure if it's connected or not but I did see people sit inside. The cashier was super helpful in guiding me to the right choice of coffee and I ended up choose the iced latte and it was super yummy. The coffee isn't super overwhelming and with the latte it is a little on the sweet side but not too sweet which is just up my alley. Service is also fast as well and I got my coffee within minutes. Prices are higher then Starbucks and Panera, but what you get is a high level of knowledge, single origin coffee, and skills. They have a large selection of coffee beans, sandwiches, yogurt, hot tea, espresso drinks, coffee, cold brew, and merchandise. The service is top notch. Deciding to forgo the long Disneyland-esqe lines at the convention center's coffee shop, I made the short walk to Cartel since I had enjoyed their coffees at other locations. The shop is small but has seating off to the side that is pleasant and spacious. I had an iced almond milk latte. It was made in a short amount of time and I was out the door in just a few minutes. It tasted weirdly sour though. It's quite honestly one of the grossest lattes I've had in a while. While service from the barista to the cashier was friendly, for the prices they charge I wasn't very happy with my drink. The total was a little less than $6. It's centrally located and they have an impressive array of different washes and methods of extraction. Definitely NOT complaining that this spot was so close to my hotel. I had some of their nitro cold brew, one of their honey-wash pour overs. The nitro wasn't as rich and viscous as I would like it to be. The flavor was good. A little too bright for me which even sounds weird as I type it...but that's how I feel. The pour over was actually really smooth but actually lacked some of the brightness and fruit-forward-ness you might expect from a honey-wash which was a little disappointing. The simple fact that they have both and friendly service is more than enough to at least get a 4 star from me. 4 stars seems fair. read more

Wow! I've experienced poor service at other Cartel locations and today was no different. The young guy working seemed zoned out and bothered to help us. I made some small talk but he would hardly respond and when he did it was a whisper. I guess because Cartel makes good coffee they feel the customer isn't important. I just had my first downtown cartel experience and it did not disappoint. At 7:30pm, my husband went for his fourth cup of coffee today... Being that it's Cartel coffee, he will likely be up until 4am. I went for a hot chocolate. We recognized Jules, the barista, from the old town location. He was friendly and super knowledgeable about the coffee and the variety of other drinks and eats that they offer. Who knew that cartel even brews their own beer now (at the Tempe location)? They make all of their baked goods in house now too... I had to use major will power not to order any of their delicious looking treats. As we were leaving we noticed a group coming in to perform... Am I the only person who finds this place just OK? I mean, having gone to ASU I know a ton of people who were raving about it for years. I finally came in and was sort of disappointed. First good thing: coffee quality was good! Nothing amazing, but definitely met my expectations. Also, the people working there were super nice! I was actually turned off by the decor. I am not a taxidermy fan at all, and they have a bunch of stag heads on the wall near the kitchen that are the main focus of the coffee shop. The random, red chandelier made no sense. It's like they're just trying TOO hard to achieve something PHX hipsters will like! That's basically the best way I could describe it. I had coffee cake and we sat and waited a good 10 minutes before we were brought anything. My coffee cake was lackluster, to be honest. Tasted like something I could get at Safeway and was a little bit stale. Also, if you're main selling point for your brews is iced coffee: don't run out of straws. I wore a nice, white shirt and couldn't enjoy my coffee because I was I concerned drinking it meant spilling it all down the front of my blouse. Coffee is mediocre at best. I got a black coffee to really taste the underlying notes. It was good but not great and didn't strike as being fresh. The coffee at other local and independent shops are better IMO. Also my coworker got a green tea and she said it was okay. It's also very expensive. For a large coffee and tea we paid $10. Walking through downtown Phoenix this morning it felt like a big city, but with less people on their way somewhere. With the construction you know it's on the verge, but not quite there yet. The meeting I am heading to requires caffeine, so to the closest place I went. That was Cartel Coffee Lab. It has a funky little spot in a high rise in the center of downtown. Some hypnotizing jazzy electronic music was playing. I almost was lulled into a trance, so it was good I was ordering caffeine. The guy who helped me was professional and very nice. He had a really cool and interesting earring that was a series of silver hoops. More importantly for me, he was right on my order of a hot tea. He probably realized the music was lulling me to sleep. I ordered a green tea with a funky name that I can't remember five minutes later and included funky ingredients, which fit the hipster vibe. The tea had a smooth green tea kind of taste. It was like the corners were rounded off, if you know what I mean. It was good, but needed at least one more funky ingredient to put it over the top. That being said, it was what I needed in the moment and provided the energy for this review. read more
