We stopped here twice in our short time in Phoenix. Both the vanilla latte and pumpkin drink I got were delicious. My husband got the espresso tonic with grapefruit tonic and he loved it. It was easy to pop by while walking down the street because they have a convenient window access point. What I appreciated most about the business is when we went the second time and I asked for the pumpkin drink the barista informed me it would take a few minutes to make the syrup and wanted to make sure I had time for that. Tldr: coffee over matcha. Poblano burrito over egg+cheese burrito. Great service, sometimes(?) no indoor seating. Ambiance: there was only outdoor seating, maybe a few tables. It seemed like it was more of a grab and go vibe. If u want indoor seating.. They may not have it available. Service: great friendly service. They were helpful when you asked questions. I also went back to ask for a knif to cut my burrito. Food: they had fresh pastries, and buritos, was looking more savory so I ordered a egg+cheese burrito. My friend ordered the poblano burrito, and we exchanged halves and I must say the poblano with the hot sauce is wayyyy better than egg+cheese burrito. Also, as a matcha snob, the matcha latte was not it sadly. If ur not too particular about matcha you'll be fine, but I was disappointed and should have just stuck to the coffee. Stopped by Cartel Roasting twicr to get some coffee before my conference. I got a latte which was solid. Espresso and milk ratios were appropriate. I also tried the CCL! The coconut milk and caramel flavors came through and I liked how it was sweetened nicely as advertised. The seasonal pumpkin spice donut was better than expected. The donut was less heavy and more airy/chewy. The maple glaze with pumpkin spice was a nice addition. Staff were polite and nice. Visiting from out of state and always like finding new coffee spots to try. Ordered a Cortado which is my go to and tried a hot honey scone which sounded interesting. Personally, the scone wasn't for me and seemed more like something that would pair well with a bowl of chili rather than a coffee drink. Their coffee is more on bitter side so again, just my preference but not a fan of that style of roast. I liked the location and overall vibe of place so it warrants a 4 review. Such a cute walk up spot downtown!!! I stumbled across this place by accident- and ended up getting myself an iced vanilla latte (delicious and well balanced, not overly sweet), and my husband some beans (which he ended up loving). The service was great- for a seemingly popular walk up spot in a poppin area, the line moved fast and they were friendly and knowledgable about their menu and beans. Although I took mine to go, I thought the seating area/ambiance was super cute and would be a great place to relax for a little bit. 100% give this place a try! read more

I was in Arizona over the weekend and came to Yelp looking for coffee so I wouldn't have to drink another Starbucks drink in my hotel lobby. So happy Yelp recommended Cartel Roasting. I walked up to the window and the cashier was so friendly and patient with me because I was unsure what to order. I asked for her recommendation and she found the perfect drink for me - the CCL. I sat on the patio and noticed a sign they had on their window that stated they were collecting non perishable goods for those in need in their community. Absolutely loved this! I was really disappointed with the coffee. It was incredibly watery, very weak, and tasted more like warm milk than coffee. If you're looking for a rich, strong cup of coffee, this isn't the place. As a customer, I also don't think coffee and politics belong together. I'd rather see the focus on making a great cup of coffee than on political messaging. Maybe if more attention were given to the coffee, it would actually be worth coming back for. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place based on my experience. read more

I love popping in here after early morning appointments downtown. The staff is always friendly, though it does seem to be a revolving door of employees. Frilly drinks are not their wheelhouse but they do have an experimental section on the menu with a fun seasonal item or two. They have housemade non-dairy milks, which I find richer and more flavorful than mainstream store-bought brands. This small Cartel location makes for a good spot to grab a coffee on the go. The window service is simple and fast. I walked up and had a coffee in my hand in under a minute. The barista was very nice and made the whole process very easy. This Cartel location has a small outdoor seating area with bar seating and a few small tables with seats. Living downtown I have rarely seen people sit here but it could make a good spot to sit for a second. I got here just before they closed as the barista was about to pick up the chairs. They were nice enough to let me sit there for a little longer and were very patient. I ordered a standard cold brew but something was just slightly off about the taste. It is hard to identify just what was off but the taste just wasn't what I have come to expect from a cold brew. Still, I bet it's just a bad batch or something. read more

The barista said the coffee bases were premade when I asked about getting my drink half sweet so my drink was too sweet and we also got a hot drink that they couldn't make iced, when I asked why she didn't know, and it was even worse than mine (mine is pictured). I started drinking coffee 10 years ago after visiting a coffee farm in Costa Rica, and since then, I've learned there's a lot of bad coffee out there. Cartel Roasting is not one of them! Their vanilla latte was fantastic--everything was perfectly balanced to enhance the coffee's natural flavor rather than cover it up with sugar and syrup. 11-24-22 Thanksgiving morning We are staying in Downtown Phoenix and this is literally the only place open this Thanksgiving morning. There is a decent sized crowd outside and we place our order at the window. Next you wait until they call you when your order is ready. Oh did I forget to tell you it's freezing outside and that is where everyone is waiting. Hubby got a large coffee and myself a cappuccino. Not cheap but what is these days. Was it memorable enough to come next trip to Phoenix? Not really for me I am a bit of a bean snob so I prefer Illy and hubby is a Dunkin man and yes they have a location in Downtown but was closed. Walked there this morning asking for a simple drip refill in my travel mug. I was ignored. When I said I'd pay full price but just wanted it in the travel mug vs paper cup, I was totally ignored & they proceeded to fill the paper cup. I had to transfer the coffee myself. Rude & unprofessional. I was trying to avoid Starbucks but I'd rather go there after the horrible service I received at cartel. Shame. read more

Came here for lattes one morning and left a bit disappointed. Ordered a hot and iced vanilla latte and both drinks really did not taste like there was any vanilla in them. For a $7 small/medium cup (before tipping) I'd expect to get what I ordered. And also when I opened up my hot cup there was an inch of empty space on top! Latte tasted good but nothing like vanilla, overall I don't think I'd come back here due to the lack of vanilla taste and small portion size. Workers were friendly though. read more
