A great "anything-you-could-really-want" eatery on the SFSU campus. They have coffee, espresso drinks, and pastries then sandwiches, rice bowls, and burgers for the lunch crowd. For breakfast they also have a great selection of bagel sandwiches and scrambles. Prices are definitely affordable. Sandwiches hover around $5-6. I ordered the veggie scramble and it came out to about $6 with tax for a full plate of eggs, veggies, and rosemary potatoes (comes with toast too but I opted out.) The scramble tasted great and a better deal than the Market Grill in the Student Center where a scramble is $8+ I will definitely be ordering it again from Cafe Rosso. Lattes are decent. Not the best I've ever had but not the worst. About $3 for a small. They serve Peet's coffee so all sizes come with two shots. I haven't tried enough of the options here to give it a "As good as it gets" rating but as far as cheap, good food on campus, you can't really do better than Cafe Rosso. read more

I got a cheesy chicken pesto. I got it on dutch crunch bread which was sweet and buttery and I could eat it by itself! On my sandwich there was sliced chicken breast, pesto aioli, avocado, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes, swiss and provolone. The sandwich was BOMB! Never had avocado in a sandwich before and it was yummy and blended with the other flavors well. I also got a iced vanilla latte and it was just the right amount of sweet. I like this place! Solid spot on campus for reasonably priced food and drink items. In terms of options, they have pretty much anything your heart desires. But, the line can get really long, making this an inconvenient choice for grabbing something on the go. This can be pretty frustrating. In the mornings, I just want to be able to get a drip coffee and be on my way. My suggestion is that there should be an express lane for grab and go (cash only) to keep things moving! read more

Cafe Rosso, Village Market and Taza Smoothies are managed by the same owners. This explains the inconsistency of food quality. I hope they read these reviews and understand that SFSU customers, whether students or employees, are on a very fixed income and have to maximize their dollar. It is not a value if what is ordered is inedible. I have tried all three places in the last week and have come away feeling cheated. Mac n cheese is supposed to be savory, not sweet. The cooks should be tasting the food they serve. It is obvious they are not. I have a feeling the reason they came up with the bacon mac n cheese is to cover up the fact that it's not that good. If I wanted watery, bland mac n cheese, I'd buy Kraft and make it myself. As it is, I got halfway through and could save the rest for later. The sandwich specials are the real reason to go here. The pastries are good, the pizza is fine and it has chips and soda that are handy to grab for when you are on the go. But as far as sit-down lunch locations on campus, Cafe Rosso is definitely my favorite. There are always new sandwiches to try like a pulled pork one covered in Korean BBQ sauce. Am I just unlucky? They seem to have a policy of if they forget an order, they will just give you anything similar in the back, knowing most people don't complain. They've forgotten/misplaced my order a few times now and I've had similar experiences nearly every time. Today I waited nearly 20mins for a turkey croissant. The person who took my order said it'd be a while. When I noticed other folks getting similar hot foods with numbers way behind me, I inquired about my food. The person went to the kitchen and immediately brought back an order and apologized. The sandwich was cold and had ham. In context, I hate ham. I'm also struggling with mobility as my ankle is recently sprained. I didn't want to go back just to complain, I'm sure they would've accommodated, but I also didn't have the time to take a chance again today. Zero stars. The guy making the bagels was wearing gloves, sure, but after making a lox bagel before mine, proceeded to make my sandwich without changing his gloves. While making my sandwich he changed the receipt roll and fiddled with the machine, still wearing the gloves, also went into the back of the kitchen. He then put his hand in the bucket of spinach with dirty gloves . I started to puke out the raveoli along with the basin! EWWW.. I thought everything was fine after I puke it out but I was wrong. The next morning, I woke up and went to the toilet to pee. While I was peeing, liquid and remains of the ravioli came out of my butt hole..OMG. ew...That wasn't it. I started to puke right after that and it was all yellow acid.. throughtout the whole day I continue to poo out liquidy nasty raveoli remains. I would not go back here. Nothing too impressive about it, other than it's on the way from one class to another. Okay, so they're slow sometimes. But if there's a huge line around noonish, it's understandable! I love my mocha, but Cafe Rosso's mocha tastes kinda funky to me, but I can't really explain it. It's a bit watery, but that's okay. I go to Cafe 101 for my mocha needs anyway. But Cafe Rosso's Creamy Tomato soup is amazingly delish, and it should be a staple item instead of "soup of the day". The girl with the short and curly hair always keeps the lines moving and she's super efficient so the wait is never long. Waiting for hot items after you pay is usually what creates a waiting time. I'm also a fan of their bagels...and lately I've gotten hooked on their SUN DRIED TOMATO CREAM CHEESE. This is a must-try at the places on campus that serve bagels! Cafe Rosso slaps on a pretty good portion of the cream cheese...perfect while I was in finals mode. They also have different snacks if you want something quick, like muffins, cookies, chips, and prepackaged salads and pastas. Also, convenient location right outside of the HUM building! There are also a lot of umbrella tables so you can sit and chat with friends while eating. ;) Located on a campus but the food options here are not cafeteria-like, if that makes sense. read more

They suck. First, I ordered a Barbecue Bacon Cheeseburger, I asked if fries came with it I was told no. I ordered a side of fries, and a can of coke. $13.50 total. I waited 10 minutes for the order. My bad for not checking it right there at the counter. 50 other people waiting for food. I bite into the burger, no bacon or Barbecue sauce. It came with fries 2.25 plus 1.25 for missing bacon, total overcharge, $3.50 it was too fucked up a day to take it out on the kids, but without supervision, this place sucks. read more

So I recently found out that if you bring your own cup and ask for hot water, it's free, not $0.50. One of the longer-working cashiers informed me of this because in the past I've always payed for water even though I bring my own cup. According to him, the $0.50 was actually the cost of the paper cup they have to use, which was a surprise to me. Since then, I've always tried to go there to get hot water for my tea; sometimes getting charged, sometimes for free, I won't be stingy about having to pay or not because I've always expected to pay to begin with but if I get hooked up with the cashiers that know it's suppose to be free, then hey! I'll take it! I come here quite often in the past because I always had a class in the Humanities building and got myself a small bag of chips as lunch (yes that's horrible). Occasionally I'd grab a bagel sandwich for lunch or a deli sandwich. They are your typical bagel, similar to station cafe and Cafe 101 and their deli sandwiches are just like the other places as well so I don't really have much of a critique. Luckily they have 3-4 cash registers so when it gets busy, they can get to everyone in a timely manner, unlike a lot of the other places, which only have 2 cash registers. As for wait time for the food, it's not super speedy. This one time I think it took about 10 minutes before I got my sandwich and it was only after I asked them after they skipped my number did they go check on it. But then again, the person serving drinks going to the back to check for you, I thought that was nice (some may say that even though serving drinks, they had to tend to customers anyway, I thought it was still nice that they promptly went to check for you and not just ignore you). In the past I've also had their "dishes" but they were okay. I've had their Korean dish I think, but I forgot it's name. It wasn't really that tasty and was a rip off because it was $6 for a ton of rice and the chicken and sauce or whatever was really mushy, like stew...which it wasn't suppose to be. Their ravioli is pretty decent but overpriced as well; yes you get filled but I think I'd rather pay $5 for a sandwich rather than $7 for ravioli. read more

Wow, I only typed "Cafe Rosso" into the search box on a lark-- didn't think a campus food stand would be on Yelp! Well, so long as I'm here, coffee here is cheap and starts at eighty five cents for a small. While I like the selection here, including organic and fair trade blends, the filters they use apparently don't keep all the coffee grounds out of the finished brew. Tea's cheap at a $1.00. I haven't really tried any of the food, but the menu's long and covers breakfast and lunch foods. read more

Line is always long and food takes forever. Lattes taste horrible and food is VERY overpriced. The employees are all nice but it doesn't make up for their manager's patronizing, entitled behavior. How a manager treats his/her employees is usually a good indicator of how the service will be, and this place is no exception. I will not be returning here. Some of their employees are very attentive to their customers, but most of them can annoy you. This review is about two features of Cafe Rosso - the food, and the workers, one in particular: 1. The food: here has mostly gotten better in the past year, at least the stuff I order: Thai Yellow Curry (yum, but fattening) Grilled Eggplant Pesto sandwich on focaccia (yum, but fattening) and the not-very "Chinese" Chicken Salad (yum, not really very fattening!). And those damn Chocolate Chip Cookies, warm out of the oven on lucky afternoons, are SO yum (and I'm damn picky about my desserts), and SO fattening. (The coffee, both the drip but especially the espresso drinks, ain't yum at all, which is probably good, because if the coffee was good, I'd be addicted to having it with a fattening, warm-out-of-the-oven Chocolate Chip Cookie all the time!) 2. The employees, one in particular: I take issue with the cranky folks who complain about rude service at Cafe Rosso. Yes, I have encountered the occasional rude twit (and it's especially appalling when they screw up your order and THEN are rude to you when you calmly point it out!) However, most of the people who work there, the manager included, are at least reasonably personable and helpful in my VAST experience. And I have met a truly great employee at Cafe Rosso, who certainly makes up for any of the less-than-fabulous employee encounters I've had there: Alia F. Alia F. is always alert, attentive, professional, quick with a smile, and has never gotten any of my million orders wrong. In fact, at times she has kindly offered helpful tips on what to order, (Chinese Chicken Salad is a new staple, thanks to her) and what NOT to order, when I'm so underslept and over-homeworked that I can't think "straight:" when she witnessed me wrestling with my conscience about ordering the afore-mentioned w.o.o.t.o Chocolate Chip Cookie, she rallied to the defense of my better judgment and saved me a couple of hours on the treadmill by gently encouraging me to Stay Strong Against the Cookie! She is humorous and quick to laugh, and she also seems to always keep her feet firmly planted on the ground, no matter how crazy it sometimes gets behind that counter. So thanks and praises to Alia F., and may she move on to bigger and better jobs, (but I secretly hope she doesn't!) and I'm grateful she's been a refreshing beacon of light to this often exhausted and stressed-out grad student, who counts on Cafe Rosso to sustain her. read more
