Oh, Cafe Rosso. This is really too bad. I've been pleasantly satisfied by your affordable and varied sandwiches, soups, and delicious cookies over the past couple of years as a student at SFSU. But today, you really disappointed me. Please brush up on your customer service skills, because they are very, very lacking. I ordered a sandwich and for some reason it took you 20 minutes to make it -- all the while at least 10 other people after me were already served. Every sandwich but mine was churning out of the kitchen like clockwork. I finally had to ask about it only to discover it hadn't yet been started (and by this point my slightly hypoglycemic self was blurry-eyed and literally shaking with hunger). When it was finally up, you tried giving it to me on the wrong type of bread with nary a mention (let alone eye-contact). Yes, it may seem petty, but seriously. Did you think I would not notice? So, of course when I approached you about it, I was told that "Oh, weranoutofyourbreadsowejustputitonsourdoughandthatswhyittooksolong." You offered this lame excuse this without a sorry or a smile. Sad, sad, sad. Why couldn't you have told me once you realized you ran out of rye? What if I absolutely hated sourdough? No, I didn't want a refund, I just wanted to eat and I really, really didn't want to wait anymore. I know you tried to cover for your sloppy mistake. I'm truly one of the last people who would ever complain at a restaurant/cafe/place-where-food-is-served-to-me. Those in food service work very hard and have to put up with a lot of sh*t. I know. I've done it myself. But really....Cafe Rosso...please put a little more care in to your work. read more

This place has a versatile menu and they're open when I get to campus around 8:30am, and still open when I leave around 9pm. Sheesh, I hate Wednesdays because I have the schedule from Hell from sun up to sun down, but this place keeps me going! I pass it in the morning coming from the garage, then I pass it midday going to Humanities, then pass it leaving Humanities, then back to Humanities for a night class. Good paninis and warm sandwiches. Their terriyaki sauce was a little too sugary for me, but the curry dishes don't look bad, so I'm going to try those next. This is one of the better places to get food at SFSU. PROS: Their Chinese chicken salad (although from a box) is really light and flavorful, but filling. Their soups are usually good, ESPECIALLY their Minestrone, which I love! Their sandwiches are edible, and the turkey's pretty good. Their bagel specials are really yummy (especially #2). The line moves quickly. Credit cards accepted. Lots of good breakfast options. CONS: Although the ordering line moves fast, the food comes out REALLY slowly, and sometimes they run out of things after you've ordered. Then they just don't ever bring your food out until you ask WTF is going on. They constantly deceive me and raise my hopes. Their minestrone is great, but it's like they never have it. And sometimes they put up the sign saying it's one of their daily soups...and I get that rush of excitement, because I've waited so long...I get up to the register to order a glorious cup and BAM. The girl at the register tells me they don't have it. This has happened like 3 TIMES now! Don't toy with my emotions this way, Cafe Rosso! I made the mistake of coming here once again. The tall white dude clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed, because since the beginning of his service he was rude. Handed me my pastry like if he was handing me a dirty diaper. I asked him if he could heat up my pastry, and he said no because it gets the oven dirty. WTF?! Basic, OK burgers and pizza at an OK price. They sometimes have these big choco chip cookies that are better than the ones elsewhere on campus too. Basically mandatory eating if you're stuck in the Humanities building. Cafe Rosso is SO convenient (yes, all my classes are in the Humanities building), the food is good and super cheap! There's even a pretty good selection for such a little place. The workers are mostly students but they're all quick and keep the line moving. And the music is awesome - 90s dance music makes me so nostalgic :) The thai peanut chicken rice plate is awesome!! I usually just pick up a bagel or fruit salad, but the bagel specials are good too - esp fallafel and humus, mmm! The hot chocolate is decent, but not great... Cafe Rosso is your friend! They serve Peet's, they take credit cards, and the food is cheap and decent. Yes, you have to be patient and wait ~5 minutes for your food, but this would be standard at any other busy take-out restaurant off of campus. So who can complain? I love that you can make a version of the thai peanut and indian curry vegetarian. They add strips of fried tofu for no additional charge and they don't look at you funny for asking. They have quite a few vegan options on their menu as well. Not too shabby. read more

I would give them 0 stars if I could, and reading other reviews, I'd say that this place is just terrible with their customer NONservice. The owners are rude, lazy, and shady. I have had multiple incidents in which i have received nothing but terrible customer service from them. 1: I had a 15 min break between class and figured i had enough time to get a quick snack since I'm in the Hum building. Wrong! I waited 15 min before i finally asked them if they forgot about my order. The employee simply said "oh it takes a long time." And she didnt tell me this in the beginning because..? I ran back to class then had to come back to get my food. Total time =20 min for cold fries. 2: I ordered a plain bagel, but the woman owner told me after 7 min that they were out, and if i wanted to wait 5 min she would get a bagel from village market. Hell no was I going to wait 12 min total for a freakin plain bagel! 3: At Village Market (ps they own that too) the man owner took my order. I wanted 2 sandwiches with one as a combo. The paper specifically says to pick out a bread for the sandwiches, so I proceed to say "chicken avocado pesto sandwich on a wheat roll" when he cuts me off mid"wheat" and starts yelling and complaining at me that he still needs to put in the sandwich order. After waiting a good 1-2 min, I'm assuming he's done so I proceed with my next sandwich "village club" but of course he cuts me off mid "village" and starts bitching about how he is stil putting in an order. These people do not deserve business for their consistently rude customer service. Great place to get a quick lunch/snack before class. For a college cafe it has a lot of decent good options. I recommend the salmon bagel or the mac n cheeses with a basil lemonade! The only thing I completely cant stand and makes resent coming here are the 2 rude, older Spanish speaking women that work there. Always afraid to ask for anything/correct them due to the fact they'll give you the most horrendous attitude. One time I ordered a triple shot iced espresso with their white mocha syrup. I usually add a "splash" of soy milk when I order this because I don't prefer the amount of milk that comes in a regular white mocha or a latte. The great thing Cafe Rosso does compares to other cafes/big coffee companies is use their soy milk carton to make your drink. Well I politely asked one of these barista women to borrow their soy milk just to make my drink the way I wanted and not only did I get my carton but I got my ear bitten off by her. She lectured me on how I should've just ordered a latte for what I'm doing. I tried to explain to her that I did not want the amount of milk a latte gives but she just continued to scold me. Idk if it's because I'm a Starbucks barista and didn't appreciate the lecture or I'm just a picky customer or what, I just don't think you need to read ppl on their preferences lol. I don't know if they're the owners or supervisors, but I even witnessed them give attitude to another worker who was genuinely trying to correct the mistake that he made with a customer. This is one of my favorite places to eat on campus (other than the little cafe on 19th ave)...not because the food is stellar, it's just better than most restaurants at SFSU. I'm a loyal fan of their rice plates while others mostly come here for a coffee, quick sandwich, bagel or slice of pizza. I'd say you'd be safe with any of their rice plates but my favorites are Thai Peanut Chicken and Yellow Curry. Korean BBQ is good too if you can handle the kick (I'm a spicy food noob). Their pastas are decent but unsatisfying. None of that comforting fullness that authentic pastas give, but it's a campus cafe...so no shockers there. All of their pastas come with garlic bread on the side. Their coffee, I've never had (simply not a coffee person) so I can't pass any judgment on that. I usually get the Cinnamon Apple Spice instead. At least I think that's what it's called...you'll know it when you see it on the menu. It's pretty tasty and a great caffeine boost for you other coffee haters. An added bonus is it's right across from the Humanities building. I'm an English major, so I always come here on breaks from class for a little caffeine boost to get me through my late night lectures (ugh, those are the worst). It's a convenient place to get something warm to get you through those rainy winter nights as well. Most of their ready-made food is identical to other cafes on campus...yogurt, cookies, pasta salads and traditional salads. All of these remain fresh before 6pm (I wouldn't recommend getting these items after that) and are pretty tasty. The cafe closes at 9pm and they stop making made-to-order food around 8. After that, you'll have to stick to buying what's available in front of you. The wait is pretty long throughout the day but it's not so bad during non-rush hours. However, it's made me late to class several times and you might find yourself still waiting for your food after the designated 10 minutes for your break is up. The tables surrounding the cafe also fill up very quickly during lunch times, you'll just have to get creative on where to sit. read more

I have a confession to make, I kind of love this place. Since I practically live in Burk Hall I am so thankful for this cool little cafe. No, I wouldn't go here if I wasn't forced to be on the SFSU campus 3+ times a week. Since I'm here anyways, Cafe Rosso provides me with muuuch needed sustenance. The staff has always been pretty agreeable. No one really goes out of their way to be nice (except the girl with the blonde curly hair who works in the afternoons--she needs a raise) but no one has been rude either. The peanut chicken is pretty awesome and could totally feed someone for 2 meals. The sushi is small but pretty tasty (and cheap!). I love any of the bagels--especially the one with the cucumbers and sun-dried tomatoes. The only thing to avoid is the tuna sandwich-- NASTY. Whoever thought tuna with sauerkraut was a good idea is kiddin' themselves. Mmmm I can't wait 'til Tuesday so I can get an iced chai.... read more

This place is awesome. It's right there on SF State campus on the way to my evening class. I usually go the cafeteria but I figured I'd give this place a shot and at least walk by. When I got there it's got a huge selection on their menu and a medium sized line that was moving quickly. You order, get your number, then head to the side where you pick it up. The prices were super reasonable! The meatball sandwich with jalapeño poppers (!!) caught my eye. I also saw this huge double chocolate cookie in the display case and ordered a coffee to stay away for my class. She said $8.50. For all that. I was like, sweeet. The Price is Right BOB. I sat down and ate at the tables near the pickup window and it was delicious. Not too big, not too small and hot off the grill. The wheat bread had these nice big grains on it. If and when I am going to eat on campus, I am going to come here. read more

Large cup of coffee + a pastry for $2.15?! Their Sesame Whole Wheat Sun Dried Tomato Cream Cheese Bagels = todaifor. I'm such a fan girl, it's ridic. I can see that if you're always on the run and you're stuck between the HUM and Creative arts building...Rosso does take awhile with most of their orders but the product is ALWAYS worth it. From their sandwiches to their pastas, Rosso always makes the best of the best "fast", fresh food. I have to say, one of the best on campus. I love the fact that you can sit there, with your $2 (pls tax) Coffee and pastry deal and people watch the F out of life. I love that even on the coldest of days, you don't even mind because your nestled under one of those big maroon table umbrellas, under the gloomy gray skies of SF. I love the trees that engulf that area and the down right busy cluster f*ck it can sometimes be. I love this place so much and I can't rave on anymore about it or else I'd get a, "If you love it so much, why don't you marry it?" response. My daily cup of coffee spot is now my favorite sandwich spot. I'm a huge fan of their pastrami sandwich ever since my first year at SFSU. I always get it on wheat bread cause not only is it healthier but it tastes better than other breads they offer. Other sandwiches I've tried were turkey and roast beef which were ok but not as good as pastrami. The line can get pretty long during passing period, but it goes quickly with 3 cashiers working. Waiting for your meal can take pretty long. I say about 15-20 mins but it's worth the wait for a good sandwich. I come to Cafe Rosso for 1 reason and 1 reason only. CHICKEN PESTO AVOCADO SANDWICH. $5.50 +About the size of a brick. +A lot of Avocado spread onto the bun +Fresh strips of hot chicken +Fresh and warm dutch crunch +Excellent melding of flavors from the pesto, chicken, and avocado. Cons -They try to do Asian Rice/Pasta & Italian Pasta dishes. Previously I've ordered a Curry Chicken and when i opened the box, i found a hair (belonging to a women i persume, cuz i only have a crew cut haircut). Once over that, there are decent size amounts of chicken chunks. But the Curry lacked any real kick or spice to it.. -Can't cook rice. As an Asian, I know my rice. The rice i got with my Chicken Curry was aweful. It had random hard (near to the point of choking) bits to it. I don't know weather my order used the very bottom of the rice cooker's rice, and they were just scraping what's left for the next batch, but boy did it suck... Mind you this was ordered at 2pm, so they must have a small rice cooker then to scrape bottom so quickly. In summary from my experiences here, Order a Pesto Chicken Sandwich and Avoid their rice & pasta dish. (Also avoid the $4 Grilled cheese. heard from somebody that was a ripoff.) read more

Thanks to my dentist and some errands both being near Stonestone, I've been marking some Park Merced spots off the list this week. The latest is Cafe Rosso, and I've come to appreciate the low prices I've found at this place along with some of SFSU's other fine dining establishments. The time is takes to get here and thirty degree temperature variance between here and the Mission? Not so much. Anyway, not a lot of good reviews for Rosso, likely because their students who have yet to experience the underwhelming feeling (both in taste and wallet) when you spend $10 downtown on a subpar sandwich. Perhaps my expectations are low, but Rosso vastly exceeded them with a delicious BBQ chicken sandwich on a whole wheat roll (love them!), granola heavy parfait and a much needed caffeine jolt via a latte. And make that a no extra charge for syrup flavor latte. Yet another little bonus you won't find anywhere near downtown. Enjoy it while you can students, real life awaits. read more

Nice little cafe on campus in a great location by the student services building. The prices are right for food items (especially if you are on a budget). I did not have any food items, but seeing other peoples sandwiches/salads the portions look large. I had an iced latte which was very tasty. There is also ample seating around the cafe. My inner 5 year old was overjoyed... my teacher, not so much.. Thought this place was awesome at first..mainly because it's conveniently located near all my classes in the humanities building. It's chaos. I waited over 10 minutes for a cup of corn chowder. Why? It wasn't even that good. A thick, pudding-ish sort of concoction that tasted like a hint of canned corn juice and flour, or corn starch..whatever they used to thicken it. Stay away from the corn chowder, it's not worth the $3.20. The last 3 times I ordered a mocha it was awful. 75% cream, 22% chocolate, and 3% coffee--maybe. If I wanted chocolate milk I would have ordered it. I thought the third time would be the charm but I guess I was wrong. And so far none of the people working there have left a good impression on me. This place is really popular at SFSU. Lines start to form first thing in the morning, when everyone's getting breakfast. And, as long as it's open during the day, you will alway see a line. Most times I've been here in the morning to get some coffee. Some facts: * It's located in front of Burk Hall, diagonal from the humanities building and the Village C building. * There is no indoor seating. Everything is ordered to-go, although there are a number of chairs and tables around and next to Rosso, for you to sit and eat/drink/whatever. Pros: + Most employees here, at least from what I've observed, are students and are very friendly. I've yet to come across any employee who's been less than friendly in any way. + Variety: there are plenty of food and drink items to choose from for breakfast and lunch. You can get coffee, tea, juice, pastries, sandwiches, bagels,soups, pasta and more. There are also regular specials to choose from, as well. + I can't speak for everybody, but whenever I've been here, I've always received my coffee relatively quickly. Cons: - Lines can be long. Very long. Sometimes they get so long that it can begin to block the pathway that runs perpendicular to Rosso and parallel to the humanities building. - Most of the time when I come here, I get coffee (usually a Latte). As for the coffee itself, it's just average. I've had better tasting coffee from other places, but the coffee is definitely not bad though. - When you order an item that needs to be prepared, they give you a receipt with a number on it. Half the time, though, the employees don't call out the number when your item(s) is/are ready. Sometimes they'll call the number, but other times they'll call out the item itself. Just be careful, in case someone has ordered the same item(s) as you. It's just an average cafe. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about either. 3 stars read more

Sorry guys, nothing special here. It's just the same monotonous on-campus food. But what do you expect? This place is no UCLA, what with there amazing dining cafeterias and wide array of campus restaurants and all. At our school, we get stuck with a small handful of really great dishes, and the rest is edible garbage. Harsh, i know, but what can you do? If you're on the run and haven't had any food, cafe rosso will be there to fill you up. The bagels aren't so bad and some of the sandwiches are ok. My favorite used to be the chicken avocado pesto sandwich. I used to get it all the time back when i was a freshman but now it's just not the same. They definitely changed something and i don't like that something. My vast memories of good eats from that one sandwich has now disappeared. On the upside some of their employees are nice enough to boost up the mediocre food. One of my favorites is the asian girl with glasses and highlights. She always has a smile on her face whenever i stop by and i must say her barista skills are on top. She recommended a chai tea latte with a shot of espresso one time and now it's one of my favorite drinks. I've never met the owner but i sure have seen him around...like everywhere. Man a lot of you guys are really haters, but this place is actually not that bad. I must say, that when it comes to waiting for the food, the place really is hit and miss, but that hit and miss comes down to when you go here. If it's busy, you probably might want to keep that in mind when you order and plan out how long you got to eat before you head to lunch. If it's not that busy, you probably have a higher success rate. As for the food, I can't be the best reviewer on the dishes since I don't really order everything, but I will vouch for the BLTA and the Veggie Deluxe, which are both great sandwiches (I get mine on sourdough and sliced). The Parfait's have changed a bit, I think they are much more healthier compared to before, but that's always good. Oh, and the fruit salad is pretty good, I have one gripe though, can we get more pineapple and less honeydew; or can we get both equal amounts. Cafe Rosso is good if you have more than a little time to kill between classes. The lines are usually long but move relatively quickly. Plus, they take cards, unlike most of the other food vendors on campus. My favorite item on the menu is the Philly Veggie. Sauteed veggies, a proportionate amount of mayo, heaping amounts of melted provolone. I get it on sliced sourdough, because I'm not an idiot. This sandwich is super tasty, but will probably be forgotten once Ike's SFSU is open for business. Chocolate chip cookies are gooooooooood. I'm at school for almost 8 hrs every tuesday and thursday, and when i'm hungry nothing else calls my name except Cafe Rosso. Their food is probably the best on campus. They have a different type of menu then all the other food stands at school, serving all types of asian foods, really REALLY good sandwiches, and their chicken noodle soup is SO GOOD! The prices are cheap for what they offer, and i've never had a single bad experience. Unlike other food spots at the San Francisco State campus that are usually packed during eating hours, Cafe Rosso seems to take your order and deliver your food fast. I always enjoy getting the half sandwich/soup special for under $5. The meatball sandwich is one of my favorites and the chicken noodle soup is a classic! School food is maybe not all that bad. Great place to stop at while on a break, in between classes, or even for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have a big selection of breakfast and lunch and coffee of course. Their baked goods aren't bad either. I like to get their sandwiches. The chicken avocado one is great, pretty big for the price. I like this place! Well I've only tried a few items, but everything I got was pretty good. I've had the B.L.T.A my first time and basically fell in love with this combination. I never had bacon and avocado together in a sandwich so this was an unexpected surprise! I'm definitely re-ordering this. I also tried their chicken curry, which was alright. Dear Cafe Roso. Thanks for being the sole reason for why I am having a sucky day. I understand that it takes a while to make French Fries. That is acceptable. I had a 15 min break and it took 10 to make the fries. Not a problem. I was able to keep myself busy while i waited. The thing that disappoints me about you is that you entirely screwed up my order. I ordered Garlic Fries and a Redbull. I know, not a very conventional mixture but that is what I was in the mood for at the time. I ordered, got my RedBull (you managed to get that part of the order correct) and went to wait for 10 mins. Upon receiving my order. I was given French Fries. Not the gormet, wonderfully flavored goodness that are Garlic Fries, just plain old, garden variety, soggy, French Fries. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I did not dare bring it up as I am sure that I would have to wait another 15 minutes for my food which would have made me late for work and driven me even further into my downward hunger spiral. SUCKS. SUCKS. and btw, did I mention SUCKS? They are insanely slow. I may as well go back in time, grow the fucking dough myself and back whatever the hell I wanted b/c apparently, they can't move more than two inches a second. Seriously. Initially I thought that it was a cute little place to get food whenever Im near HUM (which is all the time) but no, they take forever. And theyre really expensive too. There is something seriously wrong with their espresso. Don't get it. If you need the caffeine, go for their solid drip coffee or make the trek up to Cafe 101 for good espresso. Sometimes their lines are too slow and I don't have time to to get coffee during lecture breaks! This ruins my life. They're cheapish and near Humanities. That earns them the stars. read more

I've tried going here a couple of times but EVERY single time I end up waiting for 30 minutes. Yes, I say something but am told, "it's on the way" only to find out later that my ticket is lost or to be told they already brought it out and asked why I didn't pick it up. Gee, I've been standing here but I just didn't feel like picking it up. What kind of a question is that? Heads up if you're vegetarian or vegan or have a diet restriction regarding meat, be a little wary of this place. I found a piece of bacon in the marinara sauce of my veggie pasta. Whether it was from another sauce or for some reason they use bacon in marinara, it's no bueno. Otherwise, pasta was tasty and fresh for the price you pay. No other complaints. read more
