I haven't been on Ocean Avenue since our son was in middle school nearly 8 years ago. Always found interesting local coffee shops, poke, sushi and burgers places near by. Today I dropped our recently senior rescued dog for his first grooming for us. I came upon an "Old Friend" Java on Ocean Coffee. The café is at the corner or Ocean Avenue and Faxon across the street from the former Walgreens which means amble parking! Java On Ocean Coffee is a classic San Francisco coffee place which has much more than coffee to order. There is a selection of savory breakfast items, sandwiches and smoothie! Given it was after 3 pm I ordered a Mexican Mocha and an oatmeal cookie. The café was fairly packed with nearby Riodan High School students studying about American history "New Deal" with great enthusiasm and laughter! There are 15 tables and plenty of seating including several outside but given the May gray day I cozyed under a poster of famous Mexican artist Frieda to drink my Mexican Mocha today. I look forward to future exploring Ocean Avenue including getting a smoothie or sandwich at the café! read more

I was in need of a study space and came across this place - many of the smaller ones wobble a lot but its only a minor inconvenience - outlets: plenty of outlets along the walls - WIFI works - food: Way to pricey. You cant go wrong with their house special chicken sandwich and sweet mexican mocha. Save your money and dont get the Chicken quesadilla (expensive and just plain). -hours: usually close 30 mins before time stated they close. Still too early to actually study read more

Finally she said "I don't have a button for that on the register" and again just BLANK stare at me as if this was my fault. The quality of the pastries are terrible considering the exorbitant prices; I ordered an almond croissant that must have been days old--I had never tasted a croissant so hard and stale. I bought it to go, and by the time I tried it and realized the issue, I was already too far away to go back and return it. I also ordered a latte; it wasn't the best, but at least it was drinkable. As a resident of Ingleside, I've been to Java on Ocean quite a few times and have brought friends along on multiple occasions. I usually enjoy myself there. The ambience is great, bright, welcoming windows, plenty of seating, and lots of beautiful art and plants that make the space feel cozy and inviting. The food and drinks are good as well. My favorites are the veggie falafel and the feta tomato bagel. However, if you're on a budget, this may not be the best spot. The prices for both food and drinks are fairly high, which makes it hard to be a regular, especially for students like me and my friends. While the atmosphere and seating are nice, studying there can be a bit of a gamble if you need Wi-Fi. Even though there are plenty of outlets, which is a big plus, I personally haven't experienced reliable Wi-Fi during my visits. If you're looking for a dependable place to study or work, you may want to consider another location. Overall, Java on Ocean is a great local spot for a first visit or for meeting up and having a good conversation. That said, it doesn't feel like a place most people would return to regularly unless they live within walking distance. read more

My family and I have been coming here for YEARS! It's a spacious cafe that has a great selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch options. They have amazing drinks and smoothies as well. Super spotty wifi but lots of seatings and food options! They have a forest-y theme going on with plants and green walls. The drinks are pretty mid; I got a White Chocolate Raspberry Oatmilk Mocha and it was too sweet/artificial tasting. The quaint neighborhood coffee shop I dreamed of since moving away from Bernie's in Noe Valley in 2023 and finally found. My only issue is the entrance is not entirely disabled friendly, there is a very steep incline into to the entrance, as it is not flush with the sidewalk, and the door is very narrow. 10+ years ago I gave this place 4 stars because it was the go to place on ocean for coffee and lunch. Fast forward to 2025, Java on ocean has fallen off quite a bit. Prices have gone up while the quality of their food have gone down and drinks have stayed stagnant. I came by for a garlic bagel and it just wasn't what it use to be. It was once a delicious garlicky cream cheese bagel and now it just tastes like a cream cheese they sprinkle garlic seasoning on and called it a day. That for $8 is wild. I hope they spend some time to revamp a little and make some improvements as they sure need it. read more

They charged me $1.50 as custom line item for less ice on my coffee. The old guy in back was very rude and told me that I have to stand at the back as he didn't like me at the front side. I have been coming to Java on Ocean for years! This establishment is so cozy, and comfortable. This place has always been the perfect place for me to study. I used to always study here during my undergrad years, and even after completing my masters program, I still come here to study for my upcoming licensing exam. Java on Ocean has a wonderful feeling of belonging, and a warm sense of community. It's a feeling of what it's like to truly enjoy the simple pleasures of classic San Francisco. One of my favorite cafe's to study and lock in SF!! I usually get their chicken hummus wrap!! Its so flavorful! The cafe's aesthetic is just so cute to study too! Also, I usually don't drink coffee or any lattes like that but I did try their rose lattee a couple times and I like it!! i come here everytime i visit san francisco since my sister lives here, and the food is great, but what ruins my time here everytime is the horrible staff, they are actually some of the rudest staff i've ever encountered (and i work in the food service industry too!!) coffee is mid, definitely NOT worth the $9 (which is crazy). everytime i come here i have one of the ladies (or the older man) here give me the most insane attitude. they assume the customer is always wrong whenever they make a mistake with the order, the lack of accountability or understanding comes off like they are not welcoming to anyone (unless ur an old white man) . Now, i will give it to them, the bagels are incredible, its the ONLY reason i keep coming back because this staff is pretentious, obnoxious, and rude, and the coffee is the most mid coffee you'll ever drink, save your $9. they accidentally made our coffee hot when we wanted it iced, and my boyfriend told the gentlemen "I'm so sorry could I actually get this iced" and older guy turned around and shouted at me "We're going to give you a cup of ice and YOU'RE gonna deal with it!" with an angry, aggressive tone. we were actually shocked, trying to be understanding and say he had a bad day, but he's like this with us everytime we're here. also the girls were being ridiculously kind and flirty with my boyfriend but when it was my turn to order, the switch was insane, i could not believe the difference, i got the worst mean girl vibe, they were sassing me, looking at me in a judgemental manner, and spoke to me with such a prentious and rude attitude, despite me genuinely trying to be kind with them (cause they're making me food! i don't want them to mess it up), and then finally my coffee came out, and mine alone came out tasting absolutely off... like i don't even think they made the one i ordered. anyways, if you want my advice, come in, just get the food, and don't tip until after you get your food, let the service speak for itself. read more

Java on Ocean is a Cute coffee house with great vibe. The Lavender Latte was tasty. But the Croissant could have been better. Croissant seemed old. And the baker quality seemed less than stellar even if it has been new. When asked, the person at the register could not provide the name of the company supplying their pastries That said, I would come back again to try out some of their other eats that are not a part of their pastry case. The people running the place were nice. And kept on top of everything. Music playing was great. Chill. And just the right volume to enjoy without being intruding. Clean tables inside and outside. Doggos seemed welcomed enough. At least for an order pickup. Certainly at an outside table. A many cool local cats at the table were talking, as were on any devices. Always a nice thing to see and experience. Location could hardly be better for the neighborhood coffee place. I like you Java on Ocean! This cafe is very reliable. Sandwiches are consistently good, so are the pastries. My partner is a huge fan of the fresh juices/smoothies. It's also noteworthy that besides juice and coffee offerings, they are stocked with lots of tasty beverages and chips. It's a nice place to people watch and the cafe has a pleasant wood interior. Also, there are birds (!), which make me happy. Right now, there is a green budgie that mostly sits and chills. The service is fine. I've seen a few comments that the owner is gruff- which is true- but so am I. Honestly, I don't need an overly friendly server if I am grabbing lunch. I'm not in this neighborhood a lot but when I am I always like to come here, usually if I'm hiking at nearby Mt. Davidson. I love the chocolate cream cheese muffins and the rose lattes. Java on Ocean (not affiliated with the other Javas at the Beach and Zoo) is very homey and cozy with lots of seating. Since it has windows on two sides of the store when it's sunny out it's lit up very well which is good for people that don't like dark coffeeshops.
